How do you go to safe mode in mac? I created a new user and tried to instal but it still doesn't work. Anyone encountered such a problem?

Your Mac must be on Lion (10.7) to run iCloud. Apple had to change the operating system to fully support it. Nevertheless, it is possible to get emails from iCloud without having Lion. Please tell me if this interests you.
Anyways, here is the link to buy Lion (30 dollars, totally worth the upgrade ): http://itunes.apple.com/be/app/os-x-lion/id444303913?mt=12

  • Mac mini server: Hardware test error on Hard Drive

Mac mini server: Hardware test error on Hard Drive
'checking for slow read failures': ERROR - Target device access failure - Test failed.
CAN I ACCESS HD (which is our data server) EVER AGAIN? IF SO, HOW?
Meanwhile we wonder if this is really a hardware error. It all happened during writing a time machine backup.
Probably while writing it, some data was relocated by accident, but we can not 100%-sure remember the sequence of actions :/
    This is our trauma history:
    - time machine got increasingly slower in writing a backup
    - we quit the backup
    - we switched off the mac mini (on power button)
    - we switched on the mac mini
    - we stopped time machine to the rules
    - we shut down mac mini via command
    - we booted the mac mini in save mode
    - we see a loading bar
    - no progress after 10th of loading bar
    - switched off (power button)
    - when we now switch on the loading bar below the apple-logo is all we see + the little wheel
    - we started with cmd+alt+p+r pressed
    - mac mini restarted but showed the loading bar scenario without progress again
    - we started with 'd' pressed and did the hardware test (see above)
    - we started with 'alt' pressed but it does not give us the recoverydrive to run the last backup
    ANY IDEAS?
IS IT A SOFTWARE- OR HARDWARE ERROR?
    THX IN ADVANCE!

I'd get Temprature Monitor & see what temps they're running.
Is Temperature Monitor an app or a device?  If it's a temperature problem then that is essentially a design problem.  Two drive failures in the same Mac mini server in four months combined with the fact that they're not really user serviceable already has me 90% on the way back to more pragmatically designed Linux servers.  I think it would be foolish to waste any more money on these minis for my business hosting.

Hi, try disconnecting any USB devices.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac Mini Server Hangs, Gets Sluggish

New 2012 Mac Mini Server (2Gig i7 with 8GB memory). Server App is off, and I'm using it as a standalone unit. Running iTunes on an external Thunderbolt RAID. Running Safari with several tabs open. The iMac generally gets irratic within an hour or so: iTunes may be sluggish, Safari slows or stalls, then eventually the whole system hangs with the fan running at full speed. I have re-set the contoller by removing power for a while and then re-initializing. No help. Seems for a loaded iMac something is very wrong. Any guesses.

    1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets (see below.)
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
    3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been another layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't actually been tested by Apple (unless it comes from the Mac App Store), but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe.
Gatekeeper has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could find some other way to evade Apple's controls.
For more information about Gatekeeper, see this Apple Support article.
    4. Beyond XProtect and Gatekeeper, there’s no benefit, in most cases, from any other automated protection against malware. The first and best line of defense is always your own intelligence. All known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore reduces to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source. How do you know whether a source is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn users who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
    5. Java on the network (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related) is a weak point in the security of any operating system. If a Java web plugin is not installed, don't install one unless you really need it. If it is installed, you should disable it (not JavaScript) in your web browsers. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those obsolete versions has known security flaws that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. The flaws will never be fixed. Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java can never be fully trusted, even if no vulnerabilities are publicly known at the moment.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
    6. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    7. ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so can corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
ClamXav is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. If you don't need to do that, avoid it. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
    8. The greatest danger posed by anti-virus software, in my opinion, is its effect on human behavior. When people install such software, which does little or nothing to protect them from emerging threats, they get a false sense of security from it, and then they may do things that make them more vulnerable. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use.

  • Why does my mac mini server keep dropping off the network?

I have Verizon FiOS and use its router/wireless to connect all macbooks, macbook pros, etc. connect to each other and the snow leopard server, which runs the printers and time machine for one of the laptops.  I'm not using any other heavy duty server apps. I just want the mac mini to stay on the network and do its job.  Invariably when I go down stairs to the mac mini and ethernet to the router to share screen, I find some update that needs to be installed, which apparently is why the mac mini has gone on strike.  I usually can see the problem when I go to connect to server and see the other macbooks, but not the mac mini.  Then after much coaxing, I'm able to get the server back on line for a few days, until the next software update.  The server is set to auto restart, but why is it balking at rejoining the network?
mac mini is running snow leopard, as are three of the four macbooks. router is an actiontec model.  wireless network is WPA2 and mac mini is ethernet connected to the router.

I've just experienced this problem when using a Marantz SR4001 receiver between my Mac Mini and HD TV. I noticed that the problem didn't happen all the time and I have found a workaround solution.
The problem is not a fault, but seems to be caused by the receiver defaulting the HDMI video properties. It's an old unit so I'm thinking that 720p is a default resolution for the receiver.
I can make the problem happen if the receiver is turned on before the TV. Seems that without an output connection the receiver is telling the mac that it expects 720p.
If I turn on the TV before the receiver, the TV seems to tell the receiver that it is expecting 1080p 25fps and the receiver obliges and the Mac retains those display properties.
So it appears that the video output device dictates the output properties back to the receiver and the receiver in turn back to the Mac. In absence of an output device the receiver defaults to 720p.
Solution: Turn on the TV before the receiver.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server - Keep getting error message

    Hi All
I have seen other people have had this problem and have tried most of their fixes but so far none of them have worked
I am running OSX 10.10 on a Macbook air and keep getting a message that pops up like this
    I have tried the following
    Disabling all sharing
Removing all login items for my user account (The only one)
I have never used time machine
Cleared my Recent lists of Servers
    Reset the Sync Servers
Deleted System Logs (Only some from apps like Plex) which I thought may have cause my problem
    and a few other things
It appears like that usually when the login screen comes up before I can even type my password, connecting to wifi networks and when attaching USB drives/storage device
Please help as this is driving me crazy

Can I also just add I just tried booting into safe mode and the popup still appeared

    Hi igorteper,
    Any progress?
"MS Visual Studio 2010 Shell (Isolated)-ENU" and "Visual Studio 2010 Prerequisites" had been installed in your computer, or there is no Visual Studio installed on this computer?
You log in SQL Server Management Studio and get an error. For further investigation the issue, please post the error messages in detail.

sound like the hard drive is starting to go out. you may want to contact Apple for service and repair options.

  • I tried to upgrade to Firefox 4.0. I keep getting error message"Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now." I check yes and it reboots, but keeps giving the same error message.

I tried to sync Firefox mobile to my PC. Then I tried to upgrade to Firefox 4.0, which was a mistake, because I already had 4.0. I checked yes to install it again. Then I tried to uninstall and reinstall 4.0. That is when I started getting the error message.

  • How do you resolve the issue with an error message on the Mac mini server stating Unable to get users

How do you resolve an issue when creating groups on a Mac Mini Server when this error message appears.
"Unable to get Users & Groups State, The Open Directory master was created, but a problem was encountered trying to refresh the state of the server. Check log files for more info."

Most likely, the Server was not configured correctly - DNS is a common issue, If DNS is not configured properly, OD will not be happy. You can run
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
in Terminal to see of DNS is up and running.
Here's a great tutorial (not mine) for setting up OS X Servers. The page says it's for a typical school environment, but it can be applied in many other environments.

  • Mac mini Server mid.2010 upgrade to Mavericks?

Hi, my Mac mini Server (2.66GHz Intel Core Duo, 8Gb RAM) running OS X 10.8.5 does not propose me to upgrade to Mavericks through "Software Update". Does it mean it's not safe to upgrade? Why do I read that a Mac Mini more recent than 2009 can run Mavericks?
My Mac Book Air upgraded through "Software Update" so I did not do anything with the Mac mini yet. Any advice on wether to upgrad or not is appreciated. I do not use the Server part, I understand that if I upgrade to Mavericks I'll have to pay for the upgrade of the Server should I need it.
Basically my question is why doesn't the Software Update propose me to upgrade my Mac mini.

OS X Mavericks requires an Early 2009 or newer Mac mini. As your Mac has got an Intel Core Duo processor, you shouldn't be able to upgrade, but to check this, open the Mac App Store and try to download OS X Mavericks. The Mac App Store will show an error if your Mac is not compatible.
If it's compatible, you will have to purchase OS X Server after upgrading. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
