Upgrading to Dual Core

I am in need of some assistance in CPU selection based on my mainboard.  K8T Neo2 MS-6702E.
I am running a Newcastle 3500 939 socket and everything is fine. I am interested in either a Dual Core or FX upgrade. The compatability chart on MSI's site is vague when it comes to this issue. AMD says that I can only upgrade to the FX 55 Clawhammer. The chart shows tests being completed on newer CPU's.
Any feedback and or guidance would be appreciated.

That is IF games will be made to support multithreading, which I doubt very much, since the most common bottleneck during gaming is the performance of the vid card, not the CPU.
Heavy CPU users (e.g. video editing) will be optimised.
I'ed keep my money in my pocket untill those games actually hit the market. Prices of dual core CPU will have dropped then too.
Computer parts are the worst investments i can think of, so I never buy anything for future use.
If u wanna impress the neigbours: go 4 it

  • Upgrading From Dual Core to Quad Core on an MSI 7246 Power Up Edition

    Good day folks.
I'm upgrading a dual core Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (3.46 GHz) to a quad core Intel QX6800 Extreme Edition (2.93 GHz) which my MSI-7246 Power Up Edition is supposed to support.
I'm running Windows XP with all the latest patches installed.
Are there any special procedures I need to follow to accomplish this without a hitch? I.E., I certainly do no want to have to reinstall the OS.
I've read a couple of posts which talk about deleting the processor entries which are now correctly listed in Device Manager.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I forgot to add, clear CMOS wouldn't hurt before you start it up after the CPU change.
OK. Will do. Sounds like good advice.
    Appreciate the tip.
EDIT: As a follow-up the upgrade went smoothly except for loading the drivers for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th cores. It took me a couple of hours but I finally discovered a work around. Basically, I had to try and manually pick a driver. With Windows XP the list presented under Intel did not contain the one I wanted. However, by picking another one and then bailing at the confirmation window it would somehow put the right one in for a given core.

  • Upgrading my Dual core g5 desktop to osx server

My question is simple. I am debating upgrading my existing desktop to osx server. Is it possible to do this and not loose any software and or user accounts? If it is not possible I could go down the route of darwin.

You've posted in the wrong forum. Post your question here: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96.
Unless your computer will be used in a fairly large network as the main server there's little point in installing OS X Server and incurring the additional costs.

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • HI, I HAVE A MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 AND I WAN'T TO UPGRADE THE HARD DRIVE UP TO 750GB AND ALSO THE RAM MEMORY TO 8GB. WHAT SPECIFIC MODEL OF HARD DRIVE AND RAM MEMORY SHOULD I BUY??? THANKS

HI, I HAVE A MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 AND I WAN'T TO UPGRADE THE HARD DRIVE UP TO 750GB AND ALSO THE RAM MEMORY TO 8GB. WHAT SPECIFIC MODEL OF HARD DRIVE AND RAM MEMORY SHOULD I BUY??? THANKS

No need to type in all caps - we HEAR you!
I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.
    Good luck,

  • Running 10.6.8 on Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66GHz processors.  Can I upgrade to Lion 10.7

I've just upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro Dual-Core Intell Xeon, 2.66GHz.   Is it possilbe to upgrade to Lion 10.7 with my Mac Pro Dual Core or have I just hit my ceiling on 10.6.8 update ?

Mac Pros are not PowerMacs.    In 2006, Apple changed all its cheesegrater enclosure Macs to have the Xeon chip installed, and changed the name to Mac Pro at that that time from PowerMac G5.  That said, all Mac Pros can upgrade to a minimum of 10.7.5.   Only the earliest ones can't upgrade to 10.8 and above.   10.7 and later do not have Rosetta, the ability to run PowerPC (pre-2006) applications natively.  For other pitfalls, read this tip.

  • 2 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor upgrade

I have a question about my Mac Pro.I don't know if you can answer it or point me in the right direction. I have a 2006 Mac Pro 2+2.66Ghz. Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 8 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM Ram.What types of upgrades can I do to make this a faster machine? Processor upgrade? or should I just by a new Mac Pro?

Selling the old one and buying a new one is the easiest way.
Macs tend to keep a much higher value then PC.

  • Upgrading Zbook 15 From i5 4200m Dual Core to an i7 Quad Core; Is it possible?

Hi. I have this laptop. Is it possible to replace the i5 dual processor with an i7 quad core? If so, I might upgrade. I am just not sure if the Zbook dual core laptop shares the same motherboard as a quad core.

    Hi Gary
Yes you're correct: you've to change out board for upgrading to Quad core processor. It's going to cost you much compared to price of the laptop.

  • Why is it that the new macbook pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned to go much faster anyway?

Why is it that the new Macbook Pro processor upgrade option only offers up to 2.8 Ghz boosting to 3.3 Ghz with Intel Dual Core i7, when back in Sep 12 I bought a 2.9 Ghz boosting to 3.6 Ghz Intel Dual Core i7 Macbook, is the new one tuned somehow to go much faster anyway, or will the new one be slower in fact?  Or does the solid state drive compensate for the lack of increased processor capacity?

The CPU's come from different Intel 'families'.  The older ones are 'Ivy Bridge' and the newer ones are 'Haswell'.  Numbers alone will not determine the efficiency of  CPU.

Sure. Make sure that you buy the RAM specified for your computer - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs - and purchase from a reputable dealer such as Crucial, OWC, etc.
