Upgrading to FCP-2

Hey,
I bought FCPS-2 about a month ago and have been practicing with it on my MBP,
while I still continued to do all of my regular projects on my G5 with FCP 5.1.4.
I am now thinking about installing the upgrade on my G5,
but I am concerned about a couple of things,
1) I have heard that you should never upgrade when you are still in the middle of editing a project,
and although I am not actually in the middle of any one project,
there are always going to be some projects that I will have to continually be going back into
to re-edit, so I really don't know when there will be a time that I won't be working on some part of some project.
If I do upgrade and have to re-edit something in an existing project,
what damage can or will I be doing to my existing video project if I had upgraded to FCPS-2?
2) Is there a wrong way to upgrade? I had heard once that just putting in the upgrade disks,
and allowing it to write over the existing applications wasn't the best way to upgrade,
but I don't know any other way to do it.
I would like to continue to use my G5 with the least amount of problems.
I have been editing projects using using FCPS-5.1.4 for the past couple of years,
and (knock on wood) I haven't had any major problems with my HD's.
I want to keep my system as healthy as possible.
I have never totally cleaned out my system and reinstalled my applications,
I had an Apple Instructor tell me that he cleans out & re-installs his entire system every spring.
He called it his spring cleaning. He said that it keeps the garbage from building up.
Short of cleaning my entire system out every spring,
Is there anything I should be doing (besides the normal updates)
to keep my system running in tip top shape?
Sorry for asking so many questions,
but I want to learn from the best and not just from my mistakes,
so that is why I am asking.
Thank you for any & all help regarding this issue.
Todd

*If I do upgrade and have to re-edit something in an existing project,*
*what damage can or will I be doing to my existing video project if I had upgraded to FCPS-2?*
If all works as it should... no damage at all. The next time you open a project that was created with an earlier version of FCP, it will ask you if you want to update the project so it will open. The normal safe procedure is to let the project update and then immediately SAVE AS, giving the project a new name. This way your original project still exists if you run into any issues.
*I had heard once that just putting in the upgrade disks, and allowing it to write over the existing applications wasn't the best way to upgrade*
I think the accepted procedure suggested by many here is to do a clean install.
Personally, I've never done that when upgrading FCP. My theory is, do the upgrade and see how it works. If I run into issues, I'll do a clean install.
The only thing I do before major upgrades is Repair Permissions and run Apple Disk Utilities and Disk Warrior on the system drive. So far I've never had an issue. I have also never done a clean install for OS upgrades, I just run the disks and go from there.
Having said all that, I have cloned my system drive so that if things do go terrible wrong, I'm not totally pooched.

  • Upgrade to FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9 stops DV

    Hi all,
Have upgraded to from OSX 10.3.9 to OSX 10.4 to allow me to upgrade FCP from 4.5 to 5.1 in order to add HDV support.
First use after upgrading and FCP is no longer recognising DV camera through Firewire. Subsequently upgraded to OSX 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4 but still have the same problem.
Can control the camera from log and capture, but preview disabled and capturing insists that no device is selected. Capture presets state that Video Device DV Video is missing
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem?
    TIA

  • I've tried upgrading from FCP 10.0.1 to the newest version and I cannot do it. It does not pop up on the App Store. Is this an upgrade or do I have to buy it again?

I've been trying to export my videos after installing the Mavericks upgrade and FCP does not let me. On one of the forums I was told to upgrade to FCP 10.6.
Is this a free upgrade or do I have to buy the newest version again?

The current version is 10.0.9. The update to 10.0.9 from 10.0.1 is free. Log in to the App Store *with the same Apple ID used to buy the application* and click on "Updates".

  • FCP 4 upgrade to FCP Studio 2?

I've got a lovely crumpled piece of paper here that I never filled out - an upgrade from FCP 4 to FCP Studio for a very reasonable rate - about $199 from memory.
Does this sort of upgrade still exist for Studio 2? Anybody? All I can find is the $700 package...

Your lovely crumpled paper expired in march.
The upgrade path from FCP4 to FCS2 is now $700.
Still, don't kick yourself too much as you didn't really lose any money by waiting.
If you had done the cross grade things would have worked out like this:
    FCP4 to FCP 5.1 > $200
    FCP 5.1 to FCS2 > $500
    total > $700
    have fun.

  • Upgrading to FCP 6.05

I am trying to upgrade to FCP 6.05. I have a registered licensed copy...but can't seem to find the update. I am currently running FCP 6.0
When I go to the Final Cut Pro 6 Release Notes page...there is no link and or any other info. http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Pro_6.0rn/
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Upgrade to FCP 5 won't recognize DVX100A

I just upgraded from FCP 4.5 to 5. With 4.5 I had no issues with FCP recognizing my DVX100A as a capture device.
When I opened FCP 5 with my DVX100A connected (& appearing just fine in system profiler at the firewire 400 port), powered on, and set to VCR mode, I was alerted that the program could not find my external device (sorry if my wording is not precise but I tend to glaze over these windows after seeing them so many times).
I have thrown out my old Quicktime receipts as was advised by the FCP help website. I have also thrown out the Final Cut Pro User Preference folder. Neither of these procedures have helped.
My A/V settings are those that were recommended on the FCP "Qualified Devices" list which is the regular Firewire DV NTSC setting. When I ignore the external-device-not-found window and open up the log and capture window the capture window reads "VTR OK" and, if I hit play, the timecode starts rolling in the tc window, but I get no image nor any sound.
    Anyone encountered this weirdness? Thanks.

I captured a short clip of video (the same video that appeared to be tearing in the log/capture window), and it captured without any trace of that tearing weirdness on the captured clip...played smooth as butter.
The "tearing" occurred whenever the subject moved quickly in the frame, leaving a trace of split lines at the places of movement. It did sort of look like dirty head tearing, but like I said there was no trace on the actual video tape itself nor on the captured footage. Apparently it only shows up in the log/capture window, which is disconcerting, but if it's not affecting capture, I guess I can live with it.
    Yes, DV/NTSC 48K setting.
    Got any ideas? Thanks.

  • Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro

Will a FCP 3.0.4 upgrade from FCP 1 load onto a new Mac Pro. I have tried loading in onto a mac book with no luck. I think its because my original FCP 1 loades using OS9 and because the new Mac Pro does not have an old operating system on it I cant load my original FCP.

You should upgrade to FCP 5.1 or 6 as Jerry says.
However, if you are desperate you could try this :-
Install just your FCP 3 upgrade and also put in your FCP 1 serial number when asked.
Whenever you try to open FCP you will probably get an error message. Click the "esc" key and FCP should open.

  • Just upgraded to FCP 5.1 and get no signal from Panasonic DVX100

    Hello all.
I am an experienced FCP user. Just did a fresh install of 5.1 and now I get no connection with my dvx100 (the original not the "a" model). I get remote control, meaning when I go to capture I can play, rewind, etc, however FCP sees no image and I cannot import or export to/from video. When I startup FCP says it cannot locate the exterior device firewire NTSC 720x480.
What is going on? Is this camera no longer supported with FCP 5.1? It worked fine with 4.1.1
    Please help!!

    Welcome to the forum.
You will find by searching that this question (deck/camera not recognized after upgrade of FCP/QT/OSX) is asked (and answered) multiple times a day.
Searching before posting is a great way to utilize the forum and to gain much faster answers to your questions.
Since this is your initial visit - you get one free get out of jail card ....
The problem most commonly is the Quicktime installation becomes corrupted in some minor way during some upgrades. A full quicktime reinstall most often solves the problem.
    Heres how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Can you upgrade to FCP?

    Hello all
I'm sure this question has been asked before
Are you able to upgrade to FCP from FCE?
    An interesting point:
Apple's Logic (sound editor), will allow you to upgrade from Logic Express to
    Logic Pro
    Thanx
    Mike

    Hi(Bonjour)!
The idea is to give an upgrade path for the application itself to the pro version of the application... itself.
As FCP 5 and 6 are only available in the studio bundle, you cannot upgrade to the sole application. FCE is a stand alone application and his big brother is a bundle application.
That's sad but... c'est la vie.

  • Capture problem after upgrading to FCP 7

I recently upgraded to FCP 7. And now I cannot capture a clip of longer than 20 or 30 seconds without FCP signaling a timecode break.
I am running OS X 10.6.4 and have tried capturing to different drives on my system. But this doesn't only happen when capturing. I hook up a camera via firewire to my computer and then play an HDV tape. I am using a tape I previously captured a few weeks ago, and so I know there are no glitches or problems with the tape.
When I play the tape, it freezes up every 20 or 30 seconds, for a couple of seconds, as the system would do if there was a timecode break. But there's no timecode break, the tape is playing perfectly through the camera, it's only FCP that is "seeing" a timecode break and stuttering the picture for a few moments. If I am trying to capture, it breaks and starts a new file as if the timecode had stopped.
    Any ideas?
Should I uninstall and reinstall completely? Or...? Cannot figure out why FCP 7 can't play video smoothly, when not even capturing. (Just to be clear, when playing back something on the timeline from a previous project, it plays perfectly smoothly -- it's only when playing the camera through the firewire that it acts like there are dropouts every 20 seconds or so -- maybe my firewire cable is bad, going to get another one today).
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, thanks. This is resolved. I used Jon Chappell's uninstall, then reinstalled (only FCP 7). I still had the problem after doing that...however, when I got up on Saturday and started playing with it -- suddenly everything worked fine!
So I don't know why after the uninstall/reinstall/reboot/etc. it wasn't working on Friday. But as of Saturday, the FCP gods smiled on me and there was a spontaneous self cure! So thanks to all for the advice. Maybe the reinstall did it but for some reason didn't take effect immediately??
Main thing is that all is well. Thanks!

  • Since upgrading to FCP 5.1.2 browser widow list hidden

Since upgrading to FCP 5.1.2, I find that sometimes my browser window will not scroll all the way to the bottom in List View.
Lots of sequences, bins and markers.
The only way to regain access to the bottom of the list is to close the project and reopen.
I’d like to have ready access to all of my list.

Wow you are just ripe with issues aren't you?
How many items do you have in your Browser? Are any bin triangles turned down revealing the contents?
But you say this all goes away with a relaunch of the application? And you used FCP Rescue to trash your preferences (there are three of them to get)? Hmm...you have the same Rig I do, and I do not have these issues.
    Pondering....

  • Upgrade to fcp 5.1, installed no prob, but can't open as crashes? help

I have osx 10.4.8, and everything seemed to be fine when installing FCP 5.1 I am only installing that and not the entire studio as that is all I want. Was upgrading from FCP HD, but I can;t remember what number, as it has dissappeared, and I am now without FCP completely. can copy and paste the error report if that would help?

they tend to be pretty long ... you can learn how to read th ereport for yourself right here:

  • Upgrading my FCP X Mac Pro

Upgrading my FCP X Mac Pro
by Michael Holmes on Jul 24, 2012 at 11:18:08 pm
I shoot videos of local bands as a hobby. I have been mixing/mastering songs for these bands for 15 years, so this is a natural extension.
I would like to upgrade my 2010 Mac Pro 2x2.4 Quad Core. This computer is only for (1) FCP X and (2) Pro Tools HD Native. Currently my system works well on single cam editing as long as I don’t use a 3rd party plug-in…………then it drops frames big time. I am about to start using two FS100 camcorders, and I am worried that the Mac Pro won’t handle dual cam editing very well. I edit 100% in ProRes.
Are the following decisions good ones?
    (1)     A Crucial M4 256 SSD for OS/Apps. I plan to buy, this seems like an obvious upgrade. I only have 75GB on the OS/Apps HD, so 256 should be sufficient.
    (2)     A RAID card. I don’t plan to buy this. I am not even using software RAID. Only one of the other three 2TB Hitachi 7200RPM SATA II drives is dedicated to video files; the other two handle Pro Tools files, and backup duties. I don’t currently have room for a RAID card, since the four PCIe slots are/will be used:
    (a)     ATI Radeon 5770
    (b)     Pro Tools HD Native
    (c)     Card for external monitor (maybe)
    (d)     Card for LTO 6 tape storage (planned, as soon as LTO 6 is available).
    (3)     An upgrade of the ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card.  I don’t plan to buy this. I haven’t seen anybody saying this will give me substantial FCP X performance improvement.
    (4) Increase memory. I will do this if it will help. I have 16GB, and I can go up to 32GB.
    (5)     An Eizo ColorEdge CG275W LCD Monitor. I don’t know what to do on this. I am currently using an HP 2711x monitor that I calibrate with a Spyder4PRO. I deliver H.264 QuickTime movies that are viewed on computer monitors. Probably 30% are uploaded to the Internet. Often the QT movies are given to club owners when bands try to get bookings.
However, I will probably start to deliver HD video DVD’s soon, especially for the club owners. These will be better quality and increase the odds that the club owners will actually view them. So, right now the product is viewed 100% on computer monitors, but later this year it will start to be viewed on televisions.
BTW, I have no idea what card to buy for this monitor, if I get it.
    Are these the right decisions?
Note that I am doing very little to address the “dropping frames” issue, which is the biggie. Am I overlooking something obvious?
    Thanks!

What about just getting two SSD's for the drive bays:
    (1) One 256GB SSD for OS/Apps
    (2) One 512GB SSD for Event/Project folders.
512GB would be tight on some shoots, but I could even go to a Mercury Electra 960GB SSD.
Yes, very pricey storage, but if this would solve data transfer problems, it would be worth it.
If I only need one video card, I can use a PCIe slot for an external SATA drive unit (4 bays) I already have to handle all backup storage. So, the loss of the two HD bays to SSD would not be a big issue. HD bays are less dear than PCIe slots.

  • FCP Studio 2 upgrade question (upgrade to FCP Studio 3)

Final Cut license allows a one-time permanent transfer to another party. One of my customers would like to transfer their Final Cut Studio 2 license to me in lieu of payment. I would upgrade to Final Cut Studio 3, but they upgraded from FCP 4 to FCP 5 and can't find their original serial. I've got the FCP 5 (Studio 2) license serial number.
Question: Will the FCP Studio 3 installer want the FCP 4 license, or will it be happy with the upgraded FCP 5 serial?
Thanks to anyone who knows and takes the time to respond.

they upgraded from FCP 4 to FCP 5 and can't find their original serial.
No go. You need the original s/n from a *full price retail version*. Even FCP 1 will do.

  • Upgrade to FCP from FCE

Can anyone give me an idea of the learning curve when upgrading from FCE to FCP. It looks as the the programs are quite similar on the surface but I have never seen this question directly answered. I am also somewhat intimidated by Compressor, DVD Studio Pro ect since I currently output to iDVD.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I upgraded from FCE to FCP last year. I used FCE for 5 years. I am not a professional but I do a fair amount of multicamera work for local ballet companies. I record and create the DVDs for their performances and individual dancers. I do it for fun and to help out the dancers.
I upgraded to FCP in order to obtain the multicamera feature in FCP. It has been worth it to me. There was very little difference in the learning curve in most aspects of logging, editing, compositing, etc. There are a ton of professional equiptment oriented input and output features that only professionals would need in FCP. I don't understand most of them but I don't need them either.
I use iDVD and not the DVD studio professional app because iDVD is so easy and the final DVDs are so beautiful. Someday I will learn DVD pro when I have some time.
Compressor has been handy, though. Sometimes a ballet will last longer than 2 hours.
Also, I bought a book about FCP which really helped.
So, I would say that you should upgrade to FCP from FCE if there are certain features that you need in FCP or the FC Studio bundle. Or if you have the cash and just want to have the top of the line program go for it. Otherwise I would stick with FCE because is is 98% of FCP and such an unbelievable software deal.
