Upgrading to Final Cut Studio 3 - do I need an unregistered version 2 ?

Hi,
I was thinking about picking up a used Final Cut Studio 2 and then getting the Upgrade to 3. If I buy version 2 on eBay used, does it need to be unregistered?
If the person I'm buying it from has uninstalled it already, will that solve the problem? Or must I buy only an unregistered one?
Thank you!

For a legal transfer of ownership, the original owner must:
• remove all related versions of the software from their machine including the licensing file.
• provide you with all disks, books, and supporting material
• provide you with the serial number that came with the software
Be very careful they are not selling you either an upgrade version (where you need a previous version) or they have not upgraded the software themselves and are leaving the upgraded version on their machine. In this latter case, they can not sell the software as it is the basis for their current (upgrade) version.

  • Final Cut Studio 5.0.4 Upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 HD Crash now needing to install on laptop

I had Final Cut Studio 5.0.4 on my laptop which I upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 during the 12 month period when it was offered at a reduced price.  My old G5 Hard Drive has bit the dust and I am trying to install on my laptop.  I have successfully re-installed upto 5.0.4 including the troublesome compressor 2.0.1 and Qmaster 2.0.1.  There are no further updates apparently when my laptop scans for any.  I am running OSX 10.5.8.  Now when I put the disks in for the Studio 2 all FCP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Compressor, DVD Studio Pro, Apple Qmaster, Live Type and Cinema tools are all grayed out, saying they need to be upgraded first.  I am guessing it is because this 12 month deal is no longer available.  Does anyone know a work around for this?  I paid $499 for this upgrade and I cant re-install it?
My laptop is 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SD RAM, small for FCP but I don't keep files on there.
    Any help would be appreciated.

why did you install FCP 5 when you are going to install FCS 2?   FCS 2 upgrade installer does not need  FCP 5 installed and therefore you dont need updates as you will be installing a newer version of FCP.
During the installation process of FCS 2 it should ask for the serial number of FCP 5 then ask for the upgrade serial number for FCS 2. You must have both of these or it wont install.
Check this spec for FCS 2 with your laptop to see if it is compatible, if the machine is not compatible, it wont install.

  • Upgrade to Final Cut Studio II on G5

Hi! I can't find the answer in the requirement specs of FCS II so I'll ask you! I have the G5 (1st model) PowerPC Processor and would like to upgrade from Final Cut Studio to FCS II... but don't know if my machine is capable. Anyone know the answer? Thanks so much everyone!

I am using FCS 2 on a Dual 2.5GHz G5, purchased in the fall of 2004. This is the model code named "Niagara." There was one earlier G5 model, code named "Grand Prix" that was a current model between June, 2003 and June 2004, which sounds like what you might have.
I use FCP, DVD Studio Pro and Compressor, and not much of any of the other components, but other than the time it takes for Compressor to complete some tasks, it runs fine. I'm not sure, but I don't see why your model wouldn't also run it--FCS 2 doesn't need an Intel Mac, and your G5 can run up to OS 10.5.9, so if speed isn't that much of an issue, it should work.
Detailed system requirements for FCS 2 can be found here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/
And more tech info on your G5 and other vintage macs can be found here:

  • Can I upgrade to Final Cut Studio 7 if my last version is also an upgrade??

I upgraded to Final Cut Pro 4.5 with a version that was for upgrading to FCP 4 from either version 1, 2 or 3.
I no longer have the previous version, just the FCP 4 box/discs and the "upgrade" authorization code on the sticker it came on.
I see that there's an upgrade to Final Cut Studio 7 for around $300 from any previous non-academic version...but what about if the last version is an upgrade too?? It IS the FULL FCP 4.5.
Am I eligible for this discounted upgrade to FC Studio 7? Has anyone done exactly this?
Thank you for any solid info/experience on this you may have!

This problem brings up another associated question.
Is it possible to extract from the app/computer the original Retail Serial Number?
With my Final Cut Express 4.0.1 I simply go to HD>Library>Application Support>ProApps and open the FCE System ID in TextEdit in order to have my original FCE 1.0.1 revealed. (The upgrade number of course is displayed on the splash screen and also "About FCE").
However, opening the FCS System ID or the ProAppsSystemID does not reveal any serial number . . . . though my FCS3 is a Full Retail Version. Maybe if it was an upgrade, it might?
Being able to access and save the original reg would be useful for anyone who has lost it since upgrading.
It must be stored somewhere, unless when it was originally installed the computer just registered that it had a suitable number and did not save the specific one.

  • What is the cost of upgrading to final cut studio or X?

I've been running the same Final Cut Pro Suite HD (FCP HD 4.5) for about 6 or so years now and it's time to upgrade to the current version of Studio to my new iMac.
Does anybody know how do I go about upgrading my package and what is the UK cost for an upgrade to the latest version of Final Cut Studio?
    Many thanks

    >If you can find it anywhere, a new copy of FCS 2009 costs $299.
Don't you mean $999?  That's the going price here in the US...again, if you can find it.  Discontinued back in June...then reluctantly sold again by Apple and only if you called them direct.  NO upgrade pricing.

  • Free Upgrade To Final Cut Studio 2?

    Hello,
Was wondering something. I bought Final Cut Studio just over a month ago. Since Apple have just come out with Final Cut Studio 2 is this just a case of me being unlucky or is there a facility where I can get the upgrade for free, since I have already paid for the latest version.
I was just hoping that someone could advise me, or at least point me in the right direction who to approach.
    Best wishes
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Final Cut Studio ( 5.1.4)

Yeah, hate to say Z1's right, but Z1's right. You purchased what was at the time the newest version, and therefore it was a done deal. In future, you may wish to check "Mac Rumor" sites periodically before buying a product, so you can preempt this very thing.
On a sidenote, thank you for being professional and reasonable about it. We've had some posters here recently who have just strait-out demanded FCS2.

  • Upgrading to Final Cut Studio 2

I just bought Final Cut Studio from a reseller about 3 weeks ago... now the new version gets released. Is there a way to upgrade to the new version without spending $499? There must be something for those of us just making this purchase without feeling left out in the cold. Thanks.

Uh oh, you're gonna get your butt chewed out.
Basically, you're left out in the cold. You're gonna have to cough up $499 for the upgrade if you want it.
Sometimes Apple has, in the past, let you get a newer software after you buying an older one. I think when I bought my Macbook Pro (or some other hardware) I got iLife '05 but they let me get '06 for free since it came out shortly after.
So, call Apple and see what they say. But I don't think you'll like what they tell you. Who knows, though, the more calls they get, maybe they'll create a 1 month grace period or something.

  • Purchase multiple upgrades of Final Cut Studio 2?

We would like to upgrade 4 edit bays to Final Cut Studio 2 from Final Cut Studio. Are there discounts available anywhere for multiple copies?
    Thanks,
    Roland
    PowerMac G5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The discount from Apple used to be for 10 seats or more - where Final Cut Studio 1 was $1299, the 10+ seat rate was $1199/seat - but that is no longer listed anywhere on the Apple site for Final Cut Studio 2 though.

  • Upgrading to Final Cut Studio, but on a different Mac

    OK, here's my dilemma...
I have an 867Mhz PowerPC Quicksilver G4 Power Mac with 512mb SDRAM and I'm running Final Cut Pro HD, version 4.5, on Tiger.
I also have a 1.5Ghz PowerPC G4 Powerbook with 1GB SDRAM and I'm running Final Cut Express, version 2.0.3, on Tiger.
Now, I'd love to own the Final Cut Studio and I've seen the Crossgrade Upgrade option. My question is, as my PowerMac is quite up to scratch with regards to being able to run FCS comfortably, can I apply for the upgrade and then install FCS on my Powerbook instead?
I'd love to hear that I can do this but I don't believe I'll be able to do it. Can I? You help and guidance, as usual, is very much appreciated. Cheers

I do not see why not. The install on the powermac may request the old serial number from the version on the G4. Technically I do not think the license agreement allows you to then run both the upgrade on the Powerbook and 4.5 on the G4 at the same time. That is between you and your higher power.
And as the other poster indicated, once you upgrade you will no longer have your 4.5 install disks. You will have a new set of 5.1 install disks.

  • Final Cut Studio upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 problem

I am trying to upgrade my G5 from Final Cut Studio to Final Cut Studio 2, I have the key for the upgrade, but it is asking for the serial key of the original Final Cut. I have it, but it still won't accept, says it is an invalid serial number. I bought my "turn-key" system from B&H photovideo and had no problems with the system or programs until this. I cannot understand what is going on. I have a previously used Final Cut Studio 2 software. All materials are here, and the key seems good, I just can't get the installer to recognize my original copy. Any suggestions?

    Call Apple.

  • Upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 from FCP problem

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade from Final Cut Pro or Production Suite, during the installation process, when i have to insert the original serial number of my older Fina Cut studio, installer show me an error message telling that my serial number is invalid!
What can i do? Both products are original!
    Thanks

Call Apple if you're really sure that you are entering the numbers correctly. ones can look like L's and zero's look like Ohs... etc..
Here's a read on install issues too: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303184 Might help... if it doesn't though, Apple will fix you right up.

  • In Thailand and thinking about ordering Final Cut Studio 5.1 NEED ADVICE

I own a 2006 Power Book G4 notebook. The computer has a 1.5 GHz processor, 1.25 GBDDR SDRAM memory, and 80GB HD. I have enjoyed using iMovie but am ready to give my podcasts a more profesional look. Can my computer operate Final Cut Studio 5.1? If it can not is there an older version that would work?

your powerbook may not be the latest and greatest but it is certainly good enough. version 5.1 is "universal" meaning it will work on both PPC macs (like yours) and the newer intel based macs. go for it.

  • Advise on upgrading to Final Cut Studio

    Hi,
I'm still using my trusted old Final Cut Production Suite (FCP HD 4.5) and it's now time to upgrade my old G5 PowerMac to the new i.7 MacBook Pro. I'd like to know if upgrading from my old software to the current FCP Studio software is straight forward to do?
    Cheers

Yes. Purchase the FCS 2009 (aka FCS3) upgrade version.
Install JUST the new FCS on the new computer. During the installation, FCP will ask for the previous version serial number. Enter it and the new serial and be happy.
Do NOT install the previous FCS version.

  • Preemptive upgrade question: Final Cut Studio 2

I'm about to install FCP Studio 2, to replace my old version of FCP 4.5. Before doing so, I want to ask if there are any known issues that I should be aware of, or potentially avoid.
I still need to access my old project files, but my understanding is that they should be upward compatible with FCP 6, just as my FCP 3 files were when I upgraded to FCP 4.5 HD.
I do remember having some weird driver problems and such, which had to be resolved before I could capture or mix to tape. Are there any such critical issues with the transition from FCP 4.5 to FCP Studio 2?

I recommend doing a complete clean install of the OS and apps. Clone your boot drive (for backup purposes), then reformat. Install the new OS, repair permissions then run Software Update. Once you have the OS at the level you need to support FCS 2, then start the FCS 2 install process. Once that's done, run Software Update again to make sure everything is up to date with the latest releases. Be sure to repair permissions after each install and update.
Alternatively, you could do what I did when doing a major FCP upgrade. I purchased a new hard drive and partitioned it into two volumes. One for OS 10.3.9, QT 6.5.2 and FCP 4.5 and the other volume for OS 10.4.11, QT 7 and FCP 5.1. That way I could still use FCP 4.5 when needed or if they were some bugs with FCP 5.1. I just boot up on the volume I need.

  • Upgrading from Final Cut Studio to Studio 2...

I just wanted to see that if I upgrade to Studio 2 my current projects will be ok? As far as I'm aware the project will update but then can't be reverted back to be used on the preview version?
Advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

That is correct BUT for safety, I would not advise upgrading in the middle of a project.
