Upgrading to iMac (intel based)

Is it really as simple as connecting a firewire cable between my old G4 and a new iMac to transfer files from old to new?
I don't have a new iMac yet, but I'm seriously considering it.
If there is documentation already provided on how to do this, can someone point me in the right direction?

See this article for information on setting up the connection. Since you are using Mac OS 9 on the G4, you cannot use the Migration Assistant and will need to transfer files by dragging them.

While anything is theoretically possible, you would need to find another GPU that is compatible with your specific model iMac, and you would need to modify OS X to use a driver appropriate for whatever you propose to install. Future OS X updates would break it in short order. Not only that, you'd void whatever warranty that remains. It's not worth it.

Unable to achieve Gigabit speeds with onboard NIC (iMAC Intel based)

Hi,
I've recently noticed that my iMAC's built in 10/100/1000 NIC is only negotiating up to 100mb. I have a direct (cat5e straight through) connection from the iMAC to a 10/100/1000 port on an Airport Extreme Base station.
I've tried several different (known good) straight through ethernet cables and I either get NO link or at most 100mb. I'm starting to think that the NIC might be flaky of failing because during a few tests with different cables, I got link after a very long delay. Close to a minute or more after plugging in the cable.
Before I call Apple tech support, I figured I'd check the forum to see if this is a known issue or if anyone else has seen this.

I'm seeing (within the Network Utility) when I select the onboard ethernet adapter that the speed is 100mb.
I've been trusting this output mainly because if I leave the Network Utility screen open and unplug or re-plug the cable back in, the speed <value> disappears and then re-appears once the speed (I'm assuming) has been negotiated.
Additionally, I've just checked the Network Utility on my Powerbook G4 (here at work), and it shows the wired ethernet speed to be (1G) as opposed to (100mb). I can think of no logical reason why my iMAC's ethernet port would be negotiating to 100mb unless either the NIC is truly flaky or the AEBS needs to somehow be configured accordingly.

Any problem with imac intel-based -power supply?

I just took possesion of an IMAC intel-based with 10.8 os. It is good so far but I'm not sure if alot of on/off power button usage is recommended.Is it better to put it to sleep for 1 hourish, or keep popping the power button. Thanks for reading. Double Thanks for an answer.

If you start deleting things in hidden system folders, or in an /Library folder you may very well mess up something.
That is why I say limit what you delete to your User folder only and only those files you've put or created there. Start messing with anything system or application related without know exactly what you are doing and you risk fubar'ing something.
There are in fact many places in the system areas that will appear to be redundant, but they are not so just because they have similar path or file names.
Also, how much free space do you have with just a freshly rebooted system? If your system does not have much RAM (given the apps your normally run on it), it may be creating quite a bit of swap space. That will be flushed out with a reboot, but if your system is RAM limited, then it will just grow back. In such a case, more RAM would help.
Use Activity Monitor to look at your RAM and swap use over a few days of normal use - look particularly at the page outs, as that will tell you how much virtual memory is actually being used on the drive. If page outs are high (thousands to 10's of thousands or more) your system is RAM limited, and your drive will be filling up with swap files.

Well, first things first... is the power cord fully plugged into the back of the iMac (and the wall, for that matter)?
Make sure the wall outlet has power, too... I've scratched my head over stupid issues where I forgot to flip a wall switch.
If the outlet does have power, then try doing a pram zap. Command + option + P + R (hold those at startup).
If the machine is receiving power, you should be able to see some LEDs if you look through the bottom grate of the machine to the left of the RAM door.

Clean install my imac intel based machine

I'm needing to replace the hard drive and clean install my intel based imac 17" (early 2006) machine and have only the osx 10.4 disk. Do i need another disk to begin this? I am rather new to this machine (I guess you could say newbie)
Anyone know if there is a step-by-step to replace this hard drive and then install the os. From what I've read there is supposed to be an install disk besides the osx disk?
Any help is appreciated.

Intel Macs as the others have said will not boot from the black retail Tiger install disks that look like this box , and will only boot from the gray disks which came with them.
Older Macs will boot from newer retail discs (to the spec limit of the operating system, for Tiger that means built-in Firewire and DVD drive*) than came with them. To find out which one came with which Mac, see this article:

I have an iMac 17" that works great is in great shape, just had a 500 gb hard drive installed...realized that I could not install the new Lion because I had an intel core duo processor and not an intel core 2 duo processor. I don't have the money to buy a new iMac...is there anyway to upgrade the processor?

Will iMac Intel based computer see Sony DCR-HC96?

Anyone out there had experience downloading image data from the Sony DCR-HC series camcorder to iMovie? I under that a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire connection via Sony's Handycam station is required. Optimally, iMovie should open automatically. I've read some conflicting reports in these forums. Any information would be appreciated. THANKS.

When you say "image data" are you talking about Photos or Movies.
For photos I imagine a USB connect would be required to transfer the photos.
For video a firewire connection is required.
iMovie should recognize the camcorder connected by firewire and allow you to import the mini DV tape to computer/iMovie.
This is a SD camcorder that shoots 4:3 and has a 16:9 shooting mode(not true widescreen)

I've never experienced iMovie opening automatically when any type of device was connected to the computer thru any type interface. Maybe other members know of this feature

We recently upgraded our iMac Intel 17" to S 10.9.2 and now it's crashing on a regular basis. The crash often occurs when viewing Mail but also when online using FireFox. Any ideas?

Based on your description, I would definitely try the troubleshooting linked above, especially the portion about troubleshooting potential RAM issues. You may also want to try running Apple Hardware Test to see if it detects any memory issues (you may need to run extended or looping testing):

How do I install Windows on my iMac (intel based) computer

Hi, I have all the software, Windows xp, and the parallels supporting software. The question is how do I load it onto my computer?

Just a friendly suggestion: update your sig - it is confusing to see the G5 iMac listed there while you are asking a question about the Intel iMac.
In your Utility Folder there's a BootCamp Assistant program. Start it up and make sure your printer has a nice stack of paper - about 25 pages if I recall properly. At the first screen once the program is running you'll have to options: Print Instructions & Proceed with the Installation. Select print and if your printer is slow, go get a cup of coffee.
The highlights: make sure you have a valid copy of XP (at least SP2) or Vista and have your Mac OS installation disk handy, it has files you'll need once Windows has finished installing. The first step is to partition the drive - unless your computer is brand new, I recommend that before partitioning you start up with your Mac installer disk, run Disk Utilities, and repair the drive. When BootCamp Assistant partitions your drive you have to decide how much space to give it - 20GB to 40GB should be plenty unless you are going to use Windows for lots of games. Once the partitioning is finished, pop in the Windows installer and click on the install Windows button that BootCamp Assistant gives you. Now you are in Windows land and after you have entered your Windows Account name and gotten to the Windows desktop, eject the Windows disc, pop in the Mac installer, and let it install the BootCamp drivers. And finally, while running Windows, visit the Apple Support site and download the BootCamp 2.1 upgrade. There are several different versions depending on which version of Windows you are running.

Check out Hodoman Timer for an inexpensive product that claims to do what you need. Alternatively, ExpressPay, the same system used a Kinkos stores for billing copyier time, also supports Macs - although there's probably a higher up-front cost to their system.

Imac intel based mini rebooting randomly

I have a 1.66 Intel Core Duo Mini mac on 10.5.1 that is randomly rebooting. It sometimes only takes minutes for it to restart, other times it will be stable for a day or two before it randomly reboots. I have had it for about 18 months and this has recently become a problems. Is there any solutions?

I have a 2.0 Mac Mini I Rented in November of last year with upgraded ram and HDD. I am using a LG 32LX2D-AA 80cm LCD. I purchased it with 10.4 and recieved the 10.5 drop in pack a couple of weeks later. I noticed no probs with 10.4 but I can't say for sure if I just missed it. Installed the drop in and only discovered the problem after noticing half my iTunes library had actually copied across from my old drive, this was due to a random restart that occurred while i was copying it. I successfully managed to witness it occurring with all external devices disconnected (except the LCD TV). I contacted the store where I purchased and they suggested re-installing 10.5 to rule out if it was leopard or not so I did. At first it was ok but then intstead of restarting it would go to "sleep" but was unable to be woken without holding the power button down. Eventually It began with the random restarts again. Sometimes it would restart a couple of times... the chime would sound, black screen, chime again, then when restart was almost complete, frozen screen, it would have a small glitch of about 9 inch long vertical black lines staggered in lines of three or there would be pixellated colour glitch across the whole screen. This was when it was really bad and I couldn't get it working, even with a rest to cool down or whatever. Took it in to the service department of the reseller three times now and every time over a week on the bench stressing the cpu and no fault. It's now been there for 30days, 1.5wks on the bench no fault and apple have given me a case no# and a contact. All the time I am paying monthly rental for what was supposed to be a cool media centre.
I really believe that the mac mini is not compatible with lcd tv's and don't know where to go if that's the problem. 36month contract of hire.

Imac Intel based shutting down

Hi,
I'm having problems with my imac.
it will turn off by it self after a few minutes of usage.
And after it turn of, it will take a long time until I can turn it back on.
I'm sure it a hardware issue because it happens even if I use windows with bootcamp.
Does anyone knows of something that I can do to fix it myself? because i can't have apple to check it, because I moved to Brazil, and I'm stuck in a country where when people see my iMac they will ask if it is a Monitor. and there's no one able to fix it around here.
It's kind of funny, bought an Mac because I was tired of dealing with PC's but it seams like it wasn't such a good choice, because if it was a desktop PC I could just take it apart and fix the problem.
At least, while it's not working is a nice way to make your living room beautiful.
