Upgrading to Indesign CS4, working in CS2

I am currently running Indesign CS2 and will be upgrading to CS4. I have clients who still need to open CS2 files from me and I don't have CS3 to continue saving down the inx file.
Do upgrades install independently, that is if I upgrade to Indesign CS4, can I still start up as CS2 and save CS2 files? I thought I read this somewhere, but I guess I need confirmation. I understand that I cannot save CS4 and expect to open in CS2. Just want a chance to work on select projects within CS2 while being upgraded.
Thx.

I have the full version of CS2. My question is if I upgrade to CS4, can I choose to start a new document in inDesign CS2, work in CS2, and save as a CS2 file. That is why I asked if upgrades are installed independently, or if when I upgrade, CS4 overwrites my CS2 and I'm forced to always be working in CS4. I called customer service and received a rather "wimpy" answer which turned out to be incorrect.
I appreciate any feedback from anyone who has upgraded. thanks.

  • Upgrade to Indesign CS4 from Pagemaker

    I have a Windows PC with Pagemaker 6.5 installed, which is listed as an eligible product to upgrade to Indesign CS4. However, on installation the only options presented for upgrade are CS, CS2, and CS3. What steps do I need to take to complete the installation as an upgrade to Pagemaker?
    Thank you

    You bought the wrong upgrade. Call Adobe and see if they can help.

  • Upgrading from InDesign CS4 to CS5.5

    How much would it cost to upgrade from InDesign CS4 to CS5.5

    There is no longer any official upgrade for any version of InDesign. The only offerings from Adobe now are Creative Cloud subscriptions (which currently provide access to both CC and CS6 versions), or purchasing a perpetual license for CS6, at full price, with the understanding that CS6 is considered "feature complete" and will not receive any further updates and may not work on the next OS releases or new generations of hardware.

  • Upgrading to InDesign CS4 from International English Upgrade?

    Hi. can I use International English Upgrade from Adobe InDesign CS/CS2/CS3 (Mac) to upgrade my CS2 version of InDesign to Indesign CS4? Any answers would be much appreciated, many thanks!

    Where are you planning to buy such a package? The chances of find a legitimate upgrade at this time are slim and none.

  • Opening an InDesign CS4 file in CS2

    Hi,
    I downloaded the trial version of CS4 and have a number of files either created or edited and saved in CS4. The trial has expired and I've reverted to CS2. I now can't open those CS4 files.
    Can I recover these files?
    Thanks in advance.

    I'm not sure how much you really want the full answer to your question,
    but.. ;)
    Besides what Bob said; InDesign is really a transactional database
    program. Each InDesign file is in fact a (rather complex) database file.
    In each version of InDesign, Adobe improves/changes the way the
    databases are written/created. Older versions have no way of knowing how
    to read the newer database files. To do that, Adobe would have to
    release major updates to previous versions every time a new version is
    released (including translations for new features, etc.)-- obviously not
    an simple undertaking. Adobe's solution is INX/IDML which is a much more
    simplified format, so to make the (one version) backwards compatibility
    simpler.

  • Should we upgrade to InDesign CS4?

    My company is thinking about upgrading to CS4. Do you have any positive or negative feedback based on their experience with the upgrade? Should we do it?

    ID started out as an individual design tool but the more it moves into larger, slower corporate environments, the more I think this is going to crop up.
    The fact that they are unwilling to sell you old copies, even if you desperately *need* those old copies for whatever synchronized effort you are a part of. This is particularly true of users coming from the XPress camp, which used to have a much slower rate of upgrades. It was 2 or 3 years between upgrades sometimes, I think!
    And it is also true that sometimes the features they put in feel like they are worth it; sometimes they don't. For example, the CS2 implementation of bulleted/numbered lists was so laughable that having it on the new features list felt like a slap in the face direct from Adobe marketeers.
    In the case of CS4 though, I agree with Dave that GREP styles is a big win, and quite possibly worth the full upgrade price to certain segments of the user base. And the always-on flightchecking is also quite exciting (and maybe even help the designers who send us incredibly bad files catch
    their mistakes before passing them on to us?).
    Mostly what worries me now is the weird bugs that seem to be cropping up regarding placed ID documents and such. I'd say CS4 is worth the upgrade price once it gets rev'd to CS4.01.

  • Will InDesign CS4 work with Mac OS 10.8?

    I am buying a new iMac and would like to know if I will have to upgrade Adobe CS 4 software.

    All bets are off with CS4 on 10.8. You can try, though.
    As for upgrading you have no upgrade path except to Creative Cloud.

  • I have upgraded from InDesign CS4 to InDesign CS5.

    We have odd sized paper (9x17 inch) we print our newsletter on. What used to print just fine, now prints too far down and to the left. I thought it might be the printer setup but it also printed incorrectly on our Risograph (duplicater) Changing margins didn't help. Any suggestions. Am I in the right place to ask this question? Thanks.

    Probably you're opening CS4 documents in CS5? If so, the converted documents have no path for the save() method. The script can be reconfigured to supply one like so:
    app.scriptPreferences.userInteractionLevel = UserInteractionLevels.NEVER_INTERACT;
    var myBook = app.open("C:\\forms\\0210.files\\zprint.indb", false),
        i, docPath, doc, j;
    for (i = 0;i<myBook.bookContents.length;i++){
        docPath = myBook.bookContents[i].fullName;
        doc = app.open(File(docPath),false);
        for (j = 0; j < doc.links.length; j++) {
            doc.links.item(j).relink(File(doc.links.item(j).filePath));
        doc.save(docPath);
        doc.close();
    app.scriptPreferences.userInteractionLevel = UserInteractionLevels.INTERACT_WITH_ALL;
    You should be warned that this will overwrite your CS4 documents with CS5 documents.
    Or, if you want to keep your script more or less as it is, you could remove or comment out this line:
    app.scriptPreferences.userInteractionLevel = UserInteractionLevels.NEVER_INTERACT;
    at the top and pick a save location for each file as it comes through in the UI.

  • Is Indesign CS4 compatible with Illustrator CS2 and Photoshop CS2?

    We are a small business and have been working in the CS2 suite forever.  We had someone do some work for us in Indesign CS4 and are looking to upgrade to that version so we can work with these files as changes happen.  If we upgrade to Indesign CS4 will it still be compatible with the rest of my CS2 programs (Illustrator and Photoshop).  Placing files and such. Thanks in advance, I know I am way behind here but it is what is cost effective for now.

    Adobe only sells InDesign CC (by subscription) or InDesign CS6. You might find boxed legal copies of CS5 or 5.5 from a vendor like Amazon.
    You should be very wary of buying older Adobe software on the Internet or eBay. Many copies don't have a legal license and may cause you problems in the future. Caveat emptor.

  • Can Indesign CS4 open CS2 files?

    Simple question, can Indesign CS4 opeen old CS2 files? Someone told me it can't. If that's true it's a disaster.

    [Jongware] - I know that, I'm not asking about CS2 opening CS4 but vice versa.
    BobLevine - that's what I'm asking. I hope you're right, thanks!
    It's incredibly important to me because time has come to upgrade my computer, and I have CS2 on it, but I've heard Windows 7 doesn't want to run CS2 at all, so if I upgrade to Win7 I'll have to upgrade the CS as well. And then someone told me ID4 can't open ID2 files anymore. That would render all my older work unusable.

  • Upgrade from InDesign Mac to InDesign CS4 Windows, Is this possible?

    Hi all, I have Indesign CS2 Mac, now I am switching to Windows platform and i want to upgrade to Indesign CS4 Window. Is this possible from my copy and  serial number of InDesign CS2 Mac.

    You had better hurry, as when CS5 comes out (sometime in April or early May) there is a very short grace period to do this. I found out the hard way and was too late and had no other choice than to pay to get CS4.
    It's not certain when InDesign CS5 might be released, until Adobe makes a formal announcement. You might want to discuss with an Adobe customer service SUPERVISOR whether you can make the cross-grade after CS5 is formally announced (not released, just announced), and also ask the SUPERVISOR whether your purchase of the cross-grade after the announcement will qualify for a free upgrade to CS5.
    Sometimes policies change, but, I believe that there's a period after announcement of a new release, before it's shipping, that by purchasing the outgoing release, you get a free upgrade to the announced release. I think there's a charge for a boxed product, but not for the downloaded product.
    I'm suggesting SUPERVISOR, because information of this kind often isn't made completely clear to regular customer-support folks. If a supervisor can't give you certain info, ask for the supervisor's MANAGER. Get the name of the person who gives you the info, so you have someone to work with if a problem arises.
    Buying an expiring product in the brief period between announcement of the next release and its actual shipping date, usually results in such a free upgrade. It's important for you to get accurate information about whether upgrading a product in this period works the same way..

  • Upgrading Indesign CS4 from Creative Suite 3

    Hi!
    Is it possible to upgrade only Indesign CS4 from Creative Suite 3 or do I have to buy the whole Creative Suite 4?
    I bought an upgrade for Indesign CS4, but now I can use it only as a testversion, because when I start the programme
    it asks me besides the new serial number for Indesign 4 also for a serial number of CS3.
    But I have only one serial number for the complete Creative Suite and this one will not be accepted.
    What can I do?

    Hello Mr. Spier,
    thank you for answering. So I will buy the complete bundle.

  • InDesign CS4 fails to open PageMaker 6.5 files correctly

    After upgrading to InDesign CS4 this week, I attempted to open a PageMaker 6.5 file. It opened, but the pages were out of sequence. PageMaker 6.5 pages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc., opened in InDesign CS4 as pages 1, 3, 2, 5, 4, etc.
    I purchased InDesign CS4 last week for the sole purpose of working on two books I created in PageMaker 6.5. For me, at present InDesign CS4 is useless. I hope Adobe provides a fix soon.
    Also the upgrade rejected my PageMaker 6.5 serial number, I tried all the fixes at the Adobe website, finally after half an hour on the phone I was given a challenge/response code which then launched InDesign. If I need to reinstall InDesign, I'll have to go through the challenge response process again, i.e. another long wait on the support line.
    I'm using OS 10.5.5 on the newest, unibody PowerBook Pro.

    From the help files:
    Flow text semi-automatically
    With a loaded text icon, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) a page or frame.
    The text flows one column at a time, as in manual flow, but the loaded text icon automatically reloads after each column is placed.
    Flow text automatically
    With the loaded text icon displayed, hold down Shift as you do one of the following:
    Click the loaded text icon in a column to create a frame the width of that column. InDesign creates new text frames and new document pages until all text is added to the document.
    Click inside a text frame that is based on a master text frame. The text autoflows into the document page frame and generates new pages as needed, using the master frames attributes. (See About masters, stacking order, and layers.)
    Flow text automatically without adding pages
    With a loaded text icon, hold down Shift+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option (Mac OS).

  • My InDesign CS4 keeps crashing....

    I upgraded my InDesign CS4 about 3 months ago with the most recent Adobe updates and have had nothing but problems ever since. I have tried everything from reinstalling it to deleting preferences and nothing seems to be working. This problem has been going on for the last three months and is really interferring with my job requirements. I can't do anything in InDesign anymore without it crashing multiple times before I can even complete the project. Just now, I was trying to place an image and it crashed; I tried to restart it and try it again and it crashed. An earlier problem occured when I tried to export out a file. Even better, I tried to save a document and it crashed, losing about 30 minutes worth of work b/c the backup document wouldn't open b/c it kept crashing after the initial problem.
    Please help as my job depends on it.

  • InDesign 2.0 files open with InDesign CS4.

    Hi,
    I works with InDesign 2.0 and want upgrade to InDesign CS4. Can I open InDesign 2.0 files with InDesign CS4?
    Or need I a conversion tool for the files. which tool is it.
    Regards
    Erdem

    2.0 files will open up fine in CS4, you won't need any special conversion tools.  However once you've opened the file in CS4 and changed it you will have to save it as a CS4 file.  There is no way you can open that file again in 2.0 unless you have all the versions in between, and even then it would be very messy and time consuming.
