Upgrading to iPhoto '08 with large libraby of 30,000 photos

maybe i can ask my question in a different way since it went unanswered in my other post.
i am about to install the '08 version. does anyone have any experience doing so from an external hard drive of such a large librarry and if so how did it go?
thanks!

Robin:
If you currently have any rolls that are titled Roll xxxx, you might want to give them some descriptive name before converting. Otherwise they get converted to Untitled Event. It may be easier to rename them now in the more familiar setting than after conversion.
After conversion be sure to go to iPhoto's Events preferences and set up the time frame for each event. It can be 1 day, 1 week, 2 hrs or 8 hrs. In addition, if you want imports brought in from the Finder make sure the Finder checkbox is not selected.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I upgraded to iPhoto 11 and I lost all of my photos. What can I do?

I upgraded to iPhoto 11 and I lost all of my photos. Only empty thumbnails show up. I don't have anypther backup. What can I do?

Open your iPhoto Library package as shown in this screenshot,
and look inside the subfolders in the Masters folder to see if you orignal files are still there.  If they are try the following:  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If neither of the above help you'll need to:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Finally considering using iPhoto - good with large dbs?

I never liked iPhoto before, and when I bought iLife yesterday, iPhoto was the app I had the least expectations for.
But I tried it and immediately liked the auto-events feature. What a great organizing tool. I like the way you can immediately scan events by rolling over them with your cursor. So I'm thinking of using iPhoto from now on.
One question - how good is it with dealing with 20,000 - 30,000 photos, like 20G - 30G of data?
    Thanks!

    Doug:
You shouldn't have a problem with that size library as long as you have sufficient free space on your boot disk. It's strongly recommended you have a minimum of 10 GB free, better to have around 20 if you're going to use iDVD much. You have plenty of RAM. Also check the tip at the end of my signature.

  • My Mac's iPhoto library is larger than my iPad's photo library, despite containing the same photos???

    Hello everyone.
My iPhoto library is 22.91gb when shown in finder, and 13.8gb when shown in the iPhoto window inside iPhoto.  There are 4665 photos.  I understand why there's a difference - that's not my question.
What is confusing me is that when I sync my MacBook and my iPad, on itunes I select to sync ALL my photos from iPhoto to my iPad.  However, on my iPad they take up only 6.66gb of space, with a total of 5670 photos on the iPad (duplicates within albums, recently deleted folder and camera roll I guess).
4665 photos on mac - 22.91gb (13.8 in real terms)
    5670 photos on ipad - 6.66gb
What's going on? The quality doesn't seem reduced on the ipad at all.  I only have a little 120gb macbook air hard drive so could really do with extra space.
    thanks very much

Syncing with iTunes will store only smaller versions on your iPad, not the full sized originals, so the storage required will be less.
But the syncing will also create a cache inside the iPhoto Library with the optimised versions and require additional space on your Mac, see:  iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder

  • IPhoto crawls with large library

I am running a Macbook Pro from early 2011, OS X 10.9.5 with 2.7 GHz Core i& process, 4 GB of Ram with 500 GB HD and 160 GB available.  The iPhoto Library alone is 167 GB and iPhoto crawls each time we use it.  We take a lot of photos and video and this file will only get larger over time.
Is there a solution that would allow iPhoto to operate faster besides upgrading to a new computer?
    Thank you.

iPhoto is the slowest app.  The computer is somewhat sluggish, but I am not sure what to expect for a machine from 2011.  Thank you for the heads up on EtreCheck.  Here is the report below.

  • Upgrading to iPhoto 11 with a library on an external SMB network drive.

I currently have about 15000 photos on an SMB network HDD and would like to upgrade to to iPhoto 11. Although the photo's are on the external drive which is backed up, the photos are also backed up to a time capsule. Due to the size of the file and having multiple computers accessing the file I would prefer to keep the photos on an external drive.
    1. Can I continue to keep the library on the external drive ( I believe not)
    2. If I have to move the library to a MAC formatted drive, what is the safest and easiest way to do this?

The drive has to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
Moving a Managed Library is easy:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from the current location to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the other one to free up space.

  • I have just upgraded my software and the it keeps crashing every time it tries to upgrade my iPhoto folders, so i can't see any photos at all

I now have the latest iphoto and am on Lion.  It says the library needs to be upgraded and it always crashes before it is complete

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto Events with video only not showing in Photos.app  with iOS 4.2.1

I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3GS and when I open the Photos.app the videos and the event with the videos in do not show. I have created a new video on the iphone, synched ok with IPhoto but re-sycnhing with iPhone again does not show videos in Photos.app
Has anyone found a fix for this bug?

The same thing happened to me. I was on a mission yesterday to fix it, but didn't get it to work. I have 1 more thing i want to try... but haven't had a chance.
    Has anyone fixed this?
My plan is to unsync photos to remove them from my phone, delete all the photo cache information from the iPhoto Library package, empty the trash, reboot my computer AND iPhone, open iPhoto to make sure they're sorted correctly, and then sync my phone. If that doesn't fix it... i dont know, i might call Apple.

  • My upgrade of iPhoto has not worked and cannot find my photos, any advice?

    Hi there
I was trying to find out why my photostream was not working, ie I could not see images taken on my iphone 4S on my macbook. I looked into it and it seems my iphoto was an old version so I needed to upgrae it via the App Store (cost me around GBP 10.00) I followed all the instructions but the new version of iphoto does not seem to have located my images and I get the whirling circle in the centre of the screen (as it if it is waiting to do soemthing). This has gon on for days. I have shut down and restarted but nothing has happend. I am am sure my photos must still be on my Macbook but I cannot see them.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
    Kind Regards

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto 11 and now it won't take photo from gigapan

it use to work till i updated to iphoto   why ?

    the jpeg goes in
but when you try to edit it it reject it
before iphoto 11 i could export a photo from gigapan  wich export it in tiff
then i would import it in iphoto   edit and crop
    now it says unreadable file
this is new since the update

  • How do I upgrade to iphoto 11, and stick with my OS 10.6.8?

iphoto 11 says that you must have an OS of 10.7.3 or such...?
I probably screwed up... I've been wanting my desktop and notebook to allow me to seamlessly look at each other's files for awhile now.  And to save to icloud but that's another story.  Finally I let the newer notebook with iphoto 11 access the imac's 09 iphoto library and it proceeded (for about 8 hours) to update the images so they would be readable with iphoto 11.  So now I'm back where I started and only the notebook can see the upgraded photos which are stored on the imac and the imac can't read them with its older version of iphoto.  So I went to upgrade the imac to iphoto 11 but it says I must have OS 10.7.3 or greater, I don't.  I have 10.6.8, but so does the laptop.  So I'm trying to upgrade to iphoto 11 with the imac, just so it can read the library, but not the newest iphoto 11, the one for 10.6.8....help?!

You'll need to purchase an iLife 11 disk. Install it but don't upgrade to v9.3 - stop at v9.2. That's now the only way to get iphoto11 on 10.6

How can i upgrade my iPhoto 7.1.5 to a newer version? the download 8.02 will not work as i need 8 and that isn't available on download on the site?
    Thanks x

You can upgrade to iPhoto '11 with OS X 10.8.5 by purchasing an iPhoto '11 DVD from Amazon, eBay or other source - or you can upgrade your OS to Mavericks for free if your system meets the requirements and then purchase the upgrade to iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x from the App store - in either case backup first in case of problems

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto 11 and have a major problem!

Can anyone assist me please. I have just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and once I loaded it and tried to organise my photo collection, the system informed me that my iPhoto needed to be upgraded to iPhoto 11.
I purchased the upgrade and when I loaded Adobe PSE9 'Organiser' I received an error message box which states that I have an
e-licenser Control Error. Specifically it states that 'Halion Sonic 1.x M6' has caused the following error:
elicenser(s) contains no valid license for this application.
It then gives me the following options:
         - For Trouble shooting options click 'Help'
         - Click <Licences> to view available licenses
         - Connect a valid eLicenser and click <retry>
         - Click <cancel> to abort.
I do have an elicense for Halion products that I use with Cubase 6. I am not sure why a software for my music studio should conflict with PSE9 and prevent the software from organising my photographs from iPhoto.
Even if I remove the Adobe software from my iMAC the iPhoto 11 upgrade will not load any of my photos that were originally on the system
Please can anyone offer me some advice as I have tried all of the above options without success.
    Strummerlee

    Your question is not clear
Can anyone assist me please. I have just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and once I loaded it and tried to organise my photo collection, the system informed me that my iPhoto needed to be upgraded to iPhoto 11.
How were you organizing your photo collection? You are aware that make any changes to the content or structure of the iPhoto library will corrupt your library and cause data loss
As to informing you that you needed to upgrade to iPhoto '11 - I do not believe that that ever happens - you may be notified that your library has been upgraded and you need an upgrade - this can be caused by library corruption (like moving or modifying files within the iPhoto library using the finder or a program other than iPhoto) - I'm not clear but it could possibly be related to your organizing your photos
You then go into s discussion of PSE9, Halion and Cubase 6 - all not Apple products and not iPhoto related - hat questions would best be addressed in the support forums for those products
Even if I remove the Adobe software from my iMAC the iPhoto 11 upgrade will not load any of my photos that were originally on the system
this depends on exactly what you did to "organize" your photos - I'm guessing that you have destroyed your iPhoto library and will have to start over but need more information to be sure
Do you have a backup of your iPhoto library from just before you "organized" your photos?

  • Importing certain photos into iPhoto since QT upgrade crashes iPhoto

I have about 2,000 photos (jpg) that were all scanned in and now when I try importing them into iPhoto is crashes. It worked fine in QT 7.1.2 but with the 7.1.3 upgrade iPhoto now crashes. Apple is now aware of the problem (sent them an example photo and they can reproduce) The work-around suggested is open the photo in preview, do a file save as (jpg) then import into iPhoto. This works, BUT for 2,000 photos it is not really feasible. Not sure if anyone has an idea how to get around this. Thought of applescript, but preview is not scriptable.

I don't have a solution but can confirm that I an experiencing the same problem.
I am trying to import a bunch of jpeg files from a folder on my desktop. They are a mix of unedited files and some which have been edited in Photoshop Elements 3. As soon as iPhoto hits one of the edited files it crashes.
I have sent the crash log to Apple each time it happens and have send a bug report to them. I would suggest everyone who is experiencing this does the same in the hope that it may highlight the issue sooner rather than later.
Reverting back to previous versions of software is a retrograde step - Apple's software should "just work" - this is why I switched.
