Upgrading to iTunes 9 -- /VERY/ slow now..

So when I "updated" to iTunes 9.0, all of a sudden, it's running excruciatingly slowly for me. When I first installed 9.0, it took about 8 hours to "update my library". Any time that I click on a song to play it, there's a good 10-second beachballing before it plays. Switching to a different song causes the same issue. I didn't have that problem at all in iTunes 8. Always ran smooth as silk.
I rolled back to the latest version of iTunes 8. When iTunes 9.01 was released, I once again "updated" iTunes. Same exact issue.
Currently, I have my iTunes library file stored on my local HDD and my music/videos/etc stored in a shared folder on a NAS. Apparently, other people have had issues with music stored on external drives. I'd done a search and the only real "solution" that I could find was to delete the iTunes preference file. I tried that and it worked.. until I added more music to the library. After more music was added, it was back to the same VERY slow behavior as before.
Is there a more permanent solution to this and I am just not finding it? Is this a known issue that Apple is working on? Going to roll back to iTunes 8 once again.
Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Hi there,
I downgraded to iTunes 8.2 as well and haven't looked back (forward). I saw iTunes 9.0.1 come out but thought I'd wait to hear if it had sorted out any of the problems. But sounds like it hasn't.
iTunes 8.2 was the sweet spot I think. Not only does 9 not work well, but it looks and feels awful too. It's such a shame they've messed up what was a great piece of software. I really hope they address all these issues, but I doubt it. RIP iTunes!

After an update or installation, your MBP may take some time to index its files. Give it some time - but if you don't see any improvement, post here - you'll get an answer!

  • I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and now I can't back up iTunes library to disc.  In previous versions it was in file library backup to disc.  In iTunes 10.5 that is gone!

I upgraded to iTunes 10.5 and now I can't back up iTunes library to disc.  In previous versions it was in file>library>backup to disc.  In iTunes 10.5 that is gone!

Some of us have our enture itunes library backed up on CD/DVD - what a waste of time and effort as now presumably you can't use these discs to restore itunes on a new computer! WHY NOT APPLE?
Very unimpressed with itunes 10.5/ios5 - wifi tracking apps have been removed from the store (and won't function in ios5), it's impossible to sync photos (I have spent a whole day trying to sync my iphone 3GS with itines 10.5) to no avail and now, no CD backup facility.
I have never had problems with apple before - I was thinking of upgrading my whole system from PC to Mac but now I am doubtful - if this is typical of apple software, I will stay with windows!

  • Upgraded to itunes 11.4 and now when i connect my iphone 4s..itunes crash!!!!

upgraded to itunes 11.4 and now when i connect my iphone 4s..itunes crash!!!!when the iPhone is disconnected iTunes is working properly....
    please help me!!!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Changing artists names in iTunes is very slow (1 minute per song) in compilation albums

Changing artists names in iTunes is very slow (1 minute per song) in compilation albums. I am using iTunes 10.6.1 Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM 2.66 GHz Intel processor and my itunes library is 340GB. My new music is on the computer's hardrive (about 16GB) and the rest is in an external HD.
It used to work great until I switched to the new version of iTunes (10.6.1) and now changing the artist field is very very very slow (1 minute per song in compilaton albums)
What happened? Can someone help me?

Thank you both!!!!!!  Especially you, Limnos for adding onto the terrific answer from leonieDF.  Yeah, I'm seldom willing to let the software do the driving all by itself.  <heh>  However, to date I've been too lazy to work with what is currently there - and needing to know how to customize the software was my first step.
I'm finally going to reduce the enormous physical size of my cd collection - organizing and storing the jewel cases is too great a nightmare not to mention that it has turned my livingroom into nothing more than a visually overwhelming variety of storage devices--spinners being my favorite, but now mostly unavailable outside of yard sales.  Favorite disks I WILL keep to play in the car (no, my player is too old to have a USB port).
I'm getting a 2T external drive to hold the accumulation - but before that, I wanted to find out HOW to organize things so that I can find them myself - old school.  My ITunes libraries go back many years, but I now want a good cohesive way to save the way that I want - not the way that is set up for me.
Thank you both again very, very much!!

So, I have managed to fix the problem.
I found that the upgrade had replaced my library files with empty ones.
So I restored the backup I made of them before the upgrade and
now all my media is back.
    Great..
For those who run across this therad and haven't taken the effort to make a backup here is another approach that should work.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • ITunes is very slow when updating apps

Since a few days iTunes is very slow when updating apps and downloading updates for iPad etc.
Very often a download is ended with the message server reply time to long.
I'm running the latest updated version of iTunes on an iMac mid-2010 with latest OS. I have some 3-4 GB out of 12 GB memory free and 70GB free out of 500 GB storage. I have measured my internet connection speed and it is very good 95-98 Mbit/sec.
I can't see any obvious reason to why iTunes is so slow. Have anyone experienced this? Please help!

Yes! I have the exact same issue. So I tried some things.
I am on Uvese (via wifi) and was trying to update the apps on my PC via itunes. Taking FOREVER. So i tired it directly from my iPhone 6 via wifi - same issue. Then I turned off wifi on the iPhone and updated over (ATT) LTE. That worked great. I am thinking it is a Uverse/ATT issue at this point.

  • I upgraded to itunes 10.7. Now when I try to sync my new iphone 5 it gets stuck in step 6 of 8 determining tracks to sync

I upgraded to itunes 10.7 and now when I try to sync my iphone 5 it gets stuck in step 6 of 8 determining tracks. I reload 10.7 and rebooted everything. What do i do?

Had the same thing happen to me when I tried syncing my iPhone this a.m. - talked to Apple 7 hours ago and evidently there's an "issue" with the iTunes server. The Apple adviser told me to try syncing in an hour. Well, rather than do that, I've continued to check Twitter, searching on "itunes sync" or "itunes server" - seems the problem's still going on.
I'm going to wait it out til tomorrow. Or whenever.
The REASON I was synching is that ever since the iOS 5 "upgrade" photos that were in albums synced from iPhoto had disappeared. Not all the photos, just all the photos in some albums. Weird.
Too many bugs in iOS 5 (syncing, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.). They should have waited til it was right before releasing it.

  • My all reports are running very slow now, I am using Reports 6i?

    Dear Friends,
My all reports are running very slow now, I am using Reports 6i. A few months ago there speed is better. Please suggest me the solution of this problem.
    Best regards,
    Shahzad

Get statspack/AWR running against your database and analyze the reports. 15 minutes interval between snaps should be enough.
That should give you a clue as to what is going wrong in your database.
Since you are saying that the reports speed was better a few months ago, it is possible that you are suffering from "data growth".

  • ITunes loads very slow

With over 48000 songs, itunes loads very slow. Thinking it my be my pc I loaded it onto a new pc and get the same results. Is there anything I can do to getit to load under 5 seconds at least?

    Dear Apple,
I need to complain about the same problem. I have 1/10th the songs in i-Tunes (~4800) and I cringe every time I want to start the program. The same delay happens anytime I load or switch a CD to import a song.
Google can load a billion links in a blink; can't you load a millionth of this info in the same amount of time? Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
    Frustrated,
    -Mike

  • ITunes startup very slow

    Hi
My iTunes is very slow, when it starts up, i have the newest version, i have just updated.
It has allways been a problem, do any of you have the same problem, and is there a solution on the problem??

How long is "forever"? I have been experimenting with startup times with my music collection (on a FW400 external drive) - on a G4 MDD it takes 60 secs to load, but on a MacBook it takes 30 secs. This even though the MacBook has much less RAM. So I am wondering if processor speed is what is being overloaded as the iTunes library file loads........ Can any of you provide actual numbers?
What Mac? How big a music collection? How long to load? Is there a pattern here?

  • Upgraded to iTunes 9: 'Determining Volume' now *very* slow

I've upgraded my iTunes to version 9 but I've noticed that when I download podcasts iTunes now takes forever, about 1 minute per 30 minute podcast, to analyze the volume level.
Is there some new setting I need to look into?
Or is this a bug in iTunes9 and I should downgrade back to version 8?
Is there a place to file bug reports against iTunes9?
    Thanks!

I'm seeing that problem as well and I can't figure out what why it's slower. I figured it's a bug so I reported the problem at Apple's iTunes Feedback page.
On the other hand, iTunes 9 converts MP3s to AAC format at least twice as fast as iTunes 8 did, which is a very welcome improvement.

  • Since upgrading to ios8, pages very slow to load, and can no longer read items in my reading list when offline. ?????

SI since upgrading to ios8, Safari pages are very slow to load, Kindle crashes upon opening, and I can no longer read saved artices from my reading list when offline. Big disappointment. Is it possible to downgrade to previous ios?

I actually managed to fix it! But unfortunately I don't know what I was that I did that helped.
Anyways, this is kind of what I did.
    1. I tried to reset form bakup via iTunes, no change.
    2. I tried to reset as a new iPhone, problem still there and reading list also as bookmarks!? (several hundred)
    3. Noticed that I could delete a bookmark, once in a while, the other times I got the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
    4. Because I figured that it was a memory problem, I thought it made sense to delete as many as possible, witch I did.
    5. Noticed that it was more likely that I coould delete a bookmark if I restarted Safari.
    6. Notice that it was even more likely that I could delete a bookmark if I turned the Safari sync with iCould off (with option detete information on iPhone) and then back on again.
    7. When I was about half way through deleting the bookmark list I suddenly discovered that all but one of the items in my reading list was 'waiting' and one was downloading. I kind of was 'unstuck' now.
    8. I started to delete items in my reading list, but every other time I got the 'Bookmarks are being synced. Please edit the bookmarks once syncing has completed.' message.
    9. It took a while to delete all bookmarks and items in the reading list.
Hope you guys could use the info here to fix your problems too!
