Upgrading to larger HD - can I restore everything using Time Machine?

I plan on upgrading my existing 120GB HD to a 500GB; moving all existing apps and data onto it, plus consolidating from an external HD.
At the moment, I have everything installed and set up just how I want it, and don't look forward to doing this all over again. Can I install a fresh Leopard on the new 500GB drive and restore my system/apps/settings from my Time Machine backup?
If so, once complete, will the system be exactly as it was on the smaller HD? Or would I be better using something like CCC?

Could you explain the CCC or SD method?
you'll need another external drive for that. clone the current internal to that external using either CCC or SD. replace the internal drive. then boot from the clone. to do that reboot and hold "option" at the chime . this will boot you into the startup disk manager where you can choose which drive to boot from. once you are booted from the external start disk utility and reformat the new internal. make sure it's formatted mac os extended journaled with GUID partition scheme. then clone the external back to the new internal. select the new internal as the boot drive in startup disk system preferences and reboot. this is somewhat lengthier process than using restore from TM but I find it more reliable.

  • Can't restore mac using time machine

I've been having an issue where my mbp will restart suddenly. I tried downgrading to mavericks, but it didn't fix the issue. Before I did I used time machine backed up to an external drive. Now, I'm trying to restore my mac, but it's not letting me restore it past today. What can I do?

If this is not enough information then I will answer any questions about this problem I can.

  • Restoring itunes using time machine

    Hi everyone,
I'm not hugely computer literate so please be gentle.
I managed to delete my ENTIRE itunes folder... apps, music, playlists, etc. Is it possible to restore itunes exactly as it was? I have a time machine back up from yesterday that would work.
So far I've managed to use TM to get all the music, apps and video back so I'm not stressed but it was basic and messy and not as organised as itunes was before I deleted everything.
So can you help? Can I restore itunes using time machine or not?

Hi, im actually in the same boat here, im in the process of re installing my OS and i want to restore Iphoto and itunes as it was. So correct me if im wrong, all i have to do is on my Mac go to this folder (<MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music )and than jump into time machine ? That would take me directly to the folder i have in view on my mac ? Once i hit restore, will this restore all my apps, songs, iphone and ipod back ups etc ? Thanks for your help all.
    Probably not.
How and why are you reinstalling OSX?
Assuming you erased your internal HD before installing OSX, your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ when it reboots to transfer your apps, users, and data from your backups. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If you don't do that, but set up a user account instead, that account probably won't be recognized as the same one on your backups, so you won't have permission to restore from them.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Windows images, but you get the point. Depending on the age of your library the library file might not include the .itl extention. Make it match the file you are replacing.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.

  • HT4901 Can I restore my calendars and reminders from iCal?  If not, can I restore them from Time Machine?

Apparently I allowed iCloud to delete all of my calendar and reminder information from my Mac.
Can I restore it from iCloud, if not can I restore it from Time Machine?

It sounds as though it's not in iCloud anymore.
You may find that restoring from Time Machine results in the information simply disappearing again. You might try this: disable iCloud syncing, restore from Time Machine, re-enable syncing and choose the merge option when presented.

  • Can i restore my mavericks time machine to a snow leopard os?

I want to downgrade to SL from Mavericks. Can I restore my mavericks time machine files for use on a snow leopard?

I don't think there's any difference in the way TM operates, so 10.6 should be able to read the backup: however, note that many of your OS preference files will have been overwritten with new syntax that only Mavericks understands. So many of your settings won't work and the files may cause problems.
It's also worth mentioning that if you are downgrading because of crashing, slowness, or something like that, then Mavericks almost certainly isn't the cause in itself, but rather some incompatible third-party software doesn't work well in 10.9.
If you're just downgrading because you don't like some of the features, well, that's fair enough.

  • Restore calendar using Time Machine in Mavericks?

I lost my calendar information due to a mistake I made after upgrading to Mavericks. But, I've been using Time Machine for a long time. So, is there a way to restore my calender using Time Machine? All the instructions I found were Snow Leopard or Lion specific and didn't help at all. Thanks in advance!

After searching around a bit, I believe this will resolve my issue:
If a specific calendar, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Calendars. Enter Time Machine and restore.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

i got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does anybody has a fix???

Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply?  It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system?  It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.)

If you try to use a new disk with time machine, it will try to reformat your EXHD. so I would save the items on your EXHD before backing up with time machine or partitioning your EXHD in disk utility

  • Can you boot up using time machine

can you boot up using time machine? have continuous grey screen at startup.

Time Capsule TC = hardware router and hard disk designed to work with Time Machine.
Time Machine TM = software in the computer designed to run background backup.
What you buy is a Time Capsule..
And yes, that is the whole point of the TC..
Its fundamental design is a backup device for laptops over wireless so they do not need to be plugged in to do backups.
You are using it exactly for the intended use.

  • Can my Acer laptop use Time Machine wi-fi?

Can my Acer laptop use Time Machine wi-fi? Is there some Apple proprietary software
that prevents me from accessing the security
    enabled wireless network?

Chances are, your Time Capsule's wireless security settings are using WPA2 Personal encryption, which is a very popular industry standard used by both PC manufacturers and Apple.
You can confirm this as follows on your MacBook:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utillities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Look for the Wireless Security setting (about half way down the page)
    What setting do you see?
If your Time Capsule is using WPA2 Personal security, then you would need to check with Acer Support to see if the laptop is capable of connecting to a WPA2 Personal wireless network.
