Upgrading to Leopard and old software

I am thinking about purchasing Leopard for my husband for Christmas but he made a comment about it not being able to support some of his old software. Is this true? Is there any VMware, etc that he could use to run multiple MAC os's? He currently has a G5 imac (1.8Ghz) with 1.25 GB ram running OS X version 10.3.9.
Thanks in advance!

Hi psjjackson;
Mac OS X will not run in VMWare. It is possible to keep the older version of Mac OS X in it's own partition and then boot up from there when needed.
Could you provide us any additional information on old software? We might be of more help if we knew what it is that he needs to run.

    Hi,
Since upgrading my ipad and iphone software i am receiving an error message when sending emails, saying that the email address was rejected by the server.
Please advise if this is a known problem, and what is the fix.
    Many thanks

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe!

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard and the software says I need 5GB just to install?

I have a MAC OSX 10.5.8 and want to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I only have 2 GB of memory and the software says I need 5GB just to install. Do I really need that much more memory?

Apple recommends 2GB of RAM as an installation prerequisite for Maverick. At least half of this available memory will be consumed by Maverick while it is running. The remainder will not support very many concurrent applications, or open browser tabs, before exhausting available memory. The consequence is that your Mac will run slower than it should with Mavericks.
You be the judge. That early 2008 MBP can only expand to 6GB. I know, had one.

  • Just upgraded to leopard and now new keyboard won't work

I just upgraded my system to Leopard, and everything went smoothly. When I installed I had my old keyboard attached as I didn't want anything to got wrong. Now since trying to use the new white key Mac keyboard that is out now, it won't work. I tried to go into preferences under keyboard and mouse but there was no choice there to change keyboard. What can I do?

Apple's download search function is pretty messed so that may not be the right file. The one that Software Update offered for my MacBook Pro when I had the Al board attached is "Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update" and is v1.0. It was in my Utilities folder.
I had to Google to find the other link, but it's here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AluminumKeyboard_Firmware_Update_10
See if that helps. It looks like this and Leo go together, so could explain why you the board doesn't like the change.

  • Upgraded my iMac and Office software no longer supported but I have many documents to access.

I recently upgraded my iMac and all its contents were transferred over to the new Yosemite model from Snow Leopard. I find I can no longer open and use the software Office for Mac 2004 and all its associated documents.
    Message reads 'not supported'
Any suggestions, or do I need to buy new software

It's a shame then that Apple don't fully test their OS before unleashing it on the wider community, I wouldn't be in this situation if Maverics hadn't totally fu***d up my iMAC! Previous installs of new OS's have been faultless, my MAC is the best PC I have owned and I am never going back to Windows, however my purchases should remain 'MY PURCHASES' and should still be available for me to redownload because they are still in the 'MY PURCHASES' area of the App Store. If they are no longer available then users should be warned that unavailable items are about to be removed from the store before it happens. Backups of my music, files and external software purchases I have, the App Store purchases install directly and as such are not available as a download .dmg file....or are they, am I doing something wrong!!!

  • Upgrade to Leopard and Needing to RePartition

I have Leopard on the way and when I upgrade I need to break down my old windows XP partition on the beta-boot camp and repartition it for more space (I currently do not have enough on the Windows side).
I do not want to make any mistakes so as to destroy any info on my mac side or to cause more issues of any sort that would give me more work to do.
How would I go about simply breaking the old one down and then repartitioning and should I do it before or after upgrading to leopard?
    Thanks

The transfer was easier than i expected. I have been told that it would have been easier and the install of leopard on the new drive just as clean If i FIRST upgrade the old drive to leopard then back up using time machine, THEN put the new drive, format from a time machine boot and THEN insall leopard on the new hard drive. Lastly, run time machine to bring all my files to the new hard drive. I had to do the last part manually using superduper.

  • Upgraded to leopard and Cant delete podcast in itunes please help

after leopard upgrade.....when i try and delete an old played podcast my itunes immediately pops up an error message and says it quit unexpectedly. this happens w. any podcast and i have the current version of itunes, i also recently upgraded to leopard so i dont know if that has something to do with it, but i CAN play music and videos and podcasts, i just cant delete a podcast, or update them?
    any help would be great

    Good girl.
"though a bit sluggish" 512 to one gig memory is just making it. two gigs you'll be more satisfied or at minimum 1.5 gigs of memory.
    1) I can't answer that based upon normal itunes migration. I just keep my mp3 music on hard drives and when I re-do a computer from scratch just copy them over(they are all metatagged) and use the itunes "add to library" function then change the view using itunes, set my equalizer and I'm basically done.
    2) Tiger and Leopard bookmark file are interchangeable. user/library/safari/bookmarks. You should always save that file elsewhere and just drag it over to user/library/safari of course the Safari folder is not created until you launch Safari at least once.
    3) use Mail's import function, just direct it to where your mailboxes are stored.
    4) address book you can do this function and save it after done. In Tiger under user/library/application support/addressbook there will be a file called addressbook.data Now create a new folder(do it on the desktop) and name it TigerData. Copy that addressbook.data file into that new folder. Now re-name that folder to TigerData.abbu in the addressbook program use the file, import, addressbook archive menu item and choose TigerData.abbu Once done save that file for future Leopard installs.

  • IPhone wont show up in itunes after upgrading to leopard and iLife 08

    Hello:
For some reason, my iphone does not show up on my itunes after upgrading my mac to leopard and ilife 08. The phone was syncing properly before the upgrade. I also installed all the patches that were available for downloading but I did not try syncing between the main update and patches. I am running itunes 7.6 and had been running 7.5.1 before that. My iphone is on firmware 1.1.2 and I have it set to manually sync. My ipod video is syncing fine but I had that set to automatic syncing.
I checked the system profile and the usb is showing the iphone just fine.
    Can anybody help?

Yup. It does work, had the exact same problem, iPhone showed in system profiler under USB, and iTunes would not recognize, reinstall fixed it all. It almost looks like a permission problem after the reinstall to where some .plist files got wrong settings set, repairing permissions might work too.

  • Upgrade to Leopard, and now iTunes won't let me delete anything

Ok, So I got Leopard fr x-mas, and I love it. All the features are great. But now iTunes wont let me delete any unwanted songs or videos. I have deleted them from the hard disk, but still appear in my library, and when I try to delete them from the library iTunes "unexpectedly" shuts down. Somebody help!

hi i just upgraded to leopard also and the same thing happened to me. i haven't found a permanent fix for it yet, but, if you hit command-delete it should let you erase the file from itunes with having it shut down on you.
it worked for me, i hope it works for you.

  • Help please- Upgrading to Leopard and bootcamp

I have an iMac with Tiger and a Windows partition. I want to upgrade to Leopard but not go through the Windows install process again.
What I'd like to know is, does the upgrade to Leopard automatically detect the Windows partition, upgrade the Bootcamp drivers and leave everything like it was? I guess the short question is, after upgrading to Leopard, do I need to reinstall Windows etc.?
    Thanks in advance!

I upgraded to Leopard on Friday night (I guess I am an early adopter) and then booted Windows with the Leopard DVD in the drive. All Windows drivers were summarily updated without a hitch. Great update.
The only glitch I've run into is that something happens in Leopard that prevents the Windows partition from showing up in the Startup Disk Control Panel. I can still boot to it using the Option key at boot time and I can still use BootChamp but not the Startup Disk.
Boot Camp Assistant claims that I have to reformat my partition and reinstall everything. Fat chance.
    Go figure.

  • Upgraded to Leopard and can't  to wireless non broadcasted SSID

Since upgrading to Leopard a few days ago I can no longer connect to my network here at work.
We do not broadcast the SSID and use a 64bit WEP encryption.
My airport will see the WAP for a brief second and then it will go offline. Windows users have there network authentication set to shared.
Are there settings that I am missing.

If the SSID is not being broadcast, your MBP will not "see" the network. You must enter all of the data for the connection including the SSID. I haven't used WEP in a very long time but my recollection is that 64 bit WEP requires a 10 hexadecimal character key. There were many products that allowed this to be entered as a 5 ascii character string. Unfortunately not all manufacturers did the conversion the same way. In my experience it was always best to enter the key in hexadecimal.

  • Upgrading to Leopard and Existing Programs

    Hi All,
I am currently running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I was thinking about upgrading to Leopard. However, I want to know if some of the existing programs that I currently use would remain on my computer. In particular, I currently use VMWare Fusion to run Windows XP. Within Windows XP, I have Office 2007 which I use very heavily for school. Will these programs still remain in working order after installing Leopard.
    Thanks in Advance
    Anthony

these particular programs should work just fine in leopard.
in general, the following is the safest way to upgrade make a bootable clone of your current tiger system using CCCloner or Superduper. (You'll need an external drive for that). upgrade the clone to leopard and see if everything works ok. if it does, you can upgrade your main drive.

  • Upgraded to Leopard and can't Print

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded to Leopard I can't print to my HP 1115. I can print test pages just fine and if I send a normal document from any application and then put my computer to sleep when re-waken it, it will print the document, however the quality is very poor.
I'm running version 10.5.4 on a PowerPC G5. I've tried printing from Photoshop CS, Mail, Safari, and TextEdit.
    Any suggestions are welcome!

Hmmm, I will have to see if I still have the install disks I've had this printer for probably 5 years! When I first got my Mac computer with Tiger installed I didn't have to install anything, just plug-in and go. Normally I wouldn't need the disks for printers or scanners its just so much easier to go to the site and download the drivers, mac or PC. That way you don't get any of the extra junk they often have on the disk.
Where would you look for "Pacifist"? Utilities? I'll try doing a search when I get home to see if I can find it myself but I thought I might ask...
I read on another internet page about uninstalling the HP drivers and than re-installing the one they provide. They discribe the same problem I'm having and claim it will fix it. I couldn't do it though because I didn't know how to completely uninstall all the HP drivers on my computer.

  • Just upgraded to Leopard and can't see individual photos in Finder

I have just upgraded my late-2007 iMac to Leopard and dragged and dropped my photo library from a back-up disc. iPhoto can use it but the individual photos aren't available to browse in the Finder...
Nor can I select an individual photo when I try to add one as an attachment in Mail- I only see the Library file as one big 6GB file.
    What can I do?

but that's a very complicated way of doing it...
So access the photos using the Photos button in the message window in Mail or use one, some or all of these
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
    TD

  • Upgrade to Leopard and keeping Tiger just in case?

I have a dual 867 G4, 2 Gig ram, on 10.4.11 and runs great. I had held off Leopard because of slowdown concerns. Logic Pro also is fine. I will be getting a new machine by spring, but now some of my app upgrades are leopard only. I wanted to keep Tiger around just in case Logic etc. slows down in Leopard or if Leopard didn't work with some older apps. How can I do this the best way, or is it not worth doing at all? I don't use haxies but my system goodies go beyond the Apple install which I want to use on both OS's. thanks.

You could clone your current internal drive to a firewire external drive before you install Leopard. This way you have backup in case the upgrade goes badly and if all's well you can keep the backup as a Tiger boot drive.
Make sure you use the correct partition map for you Mac, ie. Apple Partition Map for non intel Macs and GUID Table for intel.
