Upgrading to Leopard...any new word?

Hi all. I'm a happy Panther user, well, at least I was until recently. Also, I've searched the boards and FAQs, but I want the latest skinny, so here goes.
Through a long convoluted story (which I will spare you) involving my Final Cut Studio upgrade to v5.1, I think I'm gonna need to purchase Tiger.
However, before I do (since I'm gonna have to plunk down $200 for the family pak), I'd like to know if anyone out there has any inkling as to whether I'm then gonnna have to pay full price for Leopard?

Hi, Mike.
If you need Tiger functions, including its improved performance over prior versions of Mac OS X, upgrade now, assuming your Mac meets the system requirements for Tiger. Otherwise, wait and reevaluate after Leopard's complete specifications are announced.
Leopard's target date was announced as "Spring 2007" at the Worldwide Developer Conference on 7 August 2006. That roughly means sometime between late March (21 March is the first day of Spring 2007) and late June (21 June is the first day of Summer 2007). That's a good number of months from now.
If Apple holds to previous trends, the pricing for Leopard should be the same as it has been for Tiger. However, no one but Apple knows how Leopard will be priced until the pricing is announced.
So, if you can put up with the performance and limitations of the current version of Mac OS X you are using until Spring 2007, do nothing. Otherwise, upgrade to Tiger.
Frankly, IMO Tiger is light-years ahead of prior versions Mac OS X and worth the upgrade if you need functions it provides.
Good luck!

  • Upgrading To Leopard While Working On An FCP Project

Working in FCP 5 in Tiger - thinking of upgrading to Leopard - any issues reported with FCP when upgrading to Leopard?
    Thanks

Only upgrade if your not in the middle of a project. Sometimes things don't go as smooth as they should. Also, backup your main drive and settings to another drive before upgrading, so if you need to, you can downgrade to where you were, (just a word of caution, learned from experience.)
Personally, I have not upgraded yet, due to some third party software that doesn't play nice with Leopard yet and that I depend on daily. As far as I can see Leopard works quit well with it's own Apple software products.
You will also loose OS 9 classic mode under Leopard, it isn't supported in Leopard.
If your wondering, I did upgrade and then almost immediately downgraded after my third party software stop working.

  • Is there any more word on when apple will be releasing the thunderbolt to FireWire adapter?

Is there any new word (newer than "in July") on when Apple will be releasing the Thunderbolt to FireWire Adaptor?

    Not yet.

  • 'Bluetooth not available' error message since upgrading to Leopard

Hi, I regularly seem to get a 'Bluetooth not available' error message since upgrading to Leopard, any ideas why, have to reboot to shake it.
    cheers
    Simon

I solved the same issue by resetting the SMC. With the computer off, remove the battery and press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Then reinstall the battery and restart. I haven't had any bluetooth issues since.

  • I have a hdd from late 2009 that I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd.  Do I need to buy a new copy of mountain lion to install on the ssd?  If not, then what is the procedure to transfer?

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

  • Buy new mac w/free upgrade to Leopard?

    Hello,
I know this is a long shot but if I buy a new Mac now is there any possibility that Apple will do a free upgrade to Leopard when it comes out? I know that Microsoft does this with it's operating system when you buy a computer nearing the date of the new OS arrival.
    Thanks,
    David

David, in the past Apple has offered a reduced upgrade to a new OS when you've bought a new Mac within a short window of time prior to the announcement. For example, Tiger's release was announced 25 days after I bought my PowerBook so I wound up getting a Tiger upgrade for $20 if I remember correctly.
But there's no guarantee Apple will do that with Leopard and, of course, we don't know when Apple will announce Leopard. My standard answer is always this: If you need the computer now, buy it. Waiting is a fool's game, you can always find a reason to delay your purchase. I had a friend who kept finding a reason to wait another month and that went on for 6 years!

  • Looking to upgrade to Leopard from Panther; any thoughts?

Hello to all, this is my second post, so please bear with me if it sounds silly:
    I have a late 2004 iMac Power PCG5, 20inch display, 1.8GHz, 2GB RAM, running Panther 10.3.9.
I am looking to possibly buy a few iPhones for the wife and I and I know that system requirements are 10.4.1 or higher. Since I cannot get Tiger anymore, I need to buy Leopard.
My computer runs smoothly, no problems, I have always kept up on software updates. Heck, we have only used like 30GB of the 160GB hard drive!
My question(s)- has anyone experienced any problems doing this kind of jump from Panther to Leopard? Known issues? I really appreciate any and all input.... I would rather not have to buy a new computer just to simply get Leopard 10.5.
I just would like to hear some reassurances or downsides before I spend $129 for Leopard.
    Thanks in advance,

    Drumfreak 68
2nd post for me as well.I just installed leopard on my imac.I had the same type of concerns as you.My wife is a part time college teacher, very important I have no issues with upgrading OS. I spent 6 months reading these forums.I've learned so much.
I upgraded to Leopard from tiger in the following manner.Every thing I did I read on these forums.
I purchased 2 external hd. The first is a 1 TB with the plan to use as a time machine disk after transition. The 2nd was a 320g that I partioned in half.I cloned my internal hd to both external hds, using superduper {fantastic program for 27$] I installed Leopard on the 2nd partition of the 320 gig hd.I booted from and ran computer from both external tiger volumnes for about a week.I booted the computer from the Leopard partition of the 320 Ex. Hd.I ran the computer from the leopard partition for the same time frame.I ran every app, that I could think of that my family uses . I had no issues at all. When I was happy with everything,I then used superduper to clone my external leopard to my internal.I will keep my tiger clone until i am confident that I have all the files moved.

  • Where did my I photo library go?  Just upgraded to Leopard on a new Imac

Where did my iPhoto Library go? I just upgraded to Leopard and went to iPhoto and there is nothing there. I'm on a 2.8 Gh Imac and did a software migration before loading Leopard. When I click media in any of the iWork suite, nothing comes up in the media inspectors. Did I lose them all?

HI TD - thanks for your response.
I did the firewire migration from the old imac G5 in Tiger. Then I loaded Leopard. My photos folder is empty on this new one. I've been thinking of uploading from the old computer before giving it over to my husband. But, if there's another way to find those photos on this iMac, that would be great.
(I had a similar dilemma with iTunes because I didn't know the music wouldn't import on it's own and found a way to make that happen, so I'm assuming that I can do the same with iPhoto, if I can find where the files are!)

  • Everyone keeps talking about an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for $29 but I cannot find it anywhere-any suggestions?

Everyone keeps talking about an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard for $29 but I cannot find it anywhere-any suggestions?

Good news for current buyers ... single user SL is down to $19, 5-user family-pack is down to $29 ... I would buy the 5-user license to avoid need ing to buy it again after Apple stops selling it.

  • I currently use Snow Leopard and Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage o my Mac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

I currently use Snow Leopard with Microsoft Word, Excel and Entourage on my iMac.  If I upgrade to Mavericks, can I still use those applications?

If the Microsoft Office is 2004 then no.
    Mavericks System requirements.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5842
Note I would recommend a minimum of 4GB RAM.
You need to check all you software and hardware including any peripherlas you use, printers etc that they are compatible with Mavericks.
Any software that is PPC and uses Rossetta will not work with any OS X verson later than 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
If you decide to upgrade have a tested backup of your current system in case of problems and you could return the computer to its previous configuration.

  • My MacBook Pro does not recognize my Android Incredible 2 cell phone and I can not transfer my photos from my cell phoen to my Mac. I was able to do this in the past, but can no longer do so. i havenot upgraded to any new software.

My MacBook Pro does not recognize my Android Incrdible 2 cell phone and therefore I can not transfer any photos from my cell phone to my Mac. I was able to do this in the past, but can not do so now. I have not upgraded to any new software. My USB cable is plugged in properly and I just get an error message -- "No Android Device Found". What could be the problem?

I had the same issue with the Galaxy S4 trying to see what the hype was about and was my first and last android phone. With that being said unfortunately it is a hit or miss with the Mac recognizing an android device or not.  It worked perfectly fine the first time around and then it stopped working for no apparent reason. Through trial and error nothing I did solved the issue.   I did however plug it in my Mac and left it connected for about 30-40 min to charge for a bit and all of the sudden it recognizes the phone. So I just launched Android File Transfer and everything else became fluid after that.    I have no explanation as to why it happened that way, but what I gathered from this is maybe you just have to let it sit for a minute while plugged in before the Mac recognizes it, after all they are opposing software.  On a side note this is why I will always be an apple user, Iphones and the like never have this problem

  • Snow leopard to Lion Upgrade on a brand new Macbook Pro

My brand new macbook pro (bought september 2011) came with snow leopard installed. Am I really expected to buy a Lion upgrade for a brand new product?

    Not required.
Some have upgraded and want desperately to reinstall SL.  Some are happy with the move.  Some are not completely happy but will live with it and adapt.
Read here for the "new features" to see if the move is worth the risk to you http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html.
Regardless, first thing you need to do is get a mac-formated drive and make a TimeMachine or CarbonCopyClone (download for free) backup.  The only common and provable issue with Lion upgrade is that those who do NOT make a backup regret not havng it when/if they reinstall SL.

  • I upgraded to the ios 5 today, but it dosent seem to have given me any new features and i didnt/wasnt asked to perform a setup? any help?

so i upgraded my iphone to the new ios 5, and for some reason i dont have any new features, no imessages or anything. it didnt ask me to set anything up, is there a way i can fix this?

iOS5 has not been officially released yet so it's anyone's guess what you actually installed...
Have you checked the OS version number on the phone itself?

  • New apple wireless keyboard doesn't work after upgrade to leopard on mini

I am posting this because I have not seen anybody else post this issue, but it is fixed at this point.
I installed the new apple ultra slim wireless keyboard on my mac mini about a month ago...was working great...until I upgraded to Leopard. The keyboard would connect, and the esc, function, and arrow keys would work great. However, none of the letter, number, or enter keys would work. This was all observed using the 'show keyboard viewer', which is accessible by allowing 'show input menu in menu bar' from the 'international' system preference pane.
I rebooted many times and even updated to the latest leopard patch set.
During this whole time, the wireless mighty mouse has worked without issue.
I removed the device and added several times with no change. I even moved the wireless keyboard to my G5 and it worked great over there.
After a few days of trying various things to no avail, I was finally able to get the keys to work, but I am not sure why. I had a wired keyboard connected and kept going back and forth between the wireless and wired keyboard and all of a sudden it started working. Very strange.

this problem is fixed, but if anybody has an idea what happened, I would like to know.
