Upgrading to Leopard while using mirrored monitor

I am using a TV as my monitor for my macbook since the screen is cracked. I needed to upgrade to snow leopard... and while doing so the tv was no longer mirroring my laptop but rather an additional screen. I tried command f1 and all the other functions but nothing is working. How can i get it to mirror again? cause the software is still downloading and i cant see what i have to do next.

Only upgrade if your not in the middle of a project. Sometimes things don't go as smooth as they should. Also, backup your main drive and settings to another drive before upgrading, so if you need to, you can downgrade to where you were, (just a word of caution, learned from experience.)
Personally, I have not upgraded yet, due to some third party software that doesn't play nice with Leopard yet and that I depend on daily. As far as I can see Leopard works quit well with it's own Apple software products.
You will also loose OS 9 classic mode under Leopard, it isn't supported in Leopard.
If your wondering, I did upgrade and then almost immediately downgraded after my third party software stop working.

  • Is it ok to keep Satellite U500 closed while using external monitor?

    Hello,
    I have a Satellite U500.
When at home, I use an external monitor and a keyboard. So I would close the laptop while working at home.
Can I do this, or would it damage the screen, or otherwise hinder the laptop from correctly ventilating in any way ?
Thank you a lot for your answers.
    Thierry

    Hi mate
Of course you can close the lid when the notebook is connected to the external monitor.
I have a Satellite notebook as well and its connected to the external monitor.
I have also an USB keyboard.
I use external keyboard instead of internal notebook keyboard and lid is closed too
    So dont worried its ok!

  • Leopard installer using bad monitor resolution

I have an MDD G4 (2x1.25GHz, 2GB RAM, 1.5TB internal drives) connected to a 17" LCD via VGA using an ATI AGP 9800 Pro card. The monitor is capable of doing 1280x1024. The system mostly sits in a corner serving iTunes and iPhoto, and running Retrospect for all of the computers on the network, so it doesn't need a great monitor.
When I boot off of the Leopard DVD to install Leopard, the system starts booting, but when the install screen comes up, it switches my monitor to 1600x1200. The monitor (rightly) complains that the signal is out of range, and I cannot see or do anything.
Is there a way to force the installer to use a resolution, e.g. 1280x1024?

I'm having a similar problem with a 1.2 GHz G4 Mini hooked up to a cheapo Sylvania monitor.
Under Tiger, I've only been able to get 1024x768 resolution, which is fine for the one or two tasks I use it for at work (that my work PC can't handle). However, starting up with the Leopard DVD causes completely garbled output on the monitor, making installation impossible.
Does anyone know of a work-around other than hauling another monitor in to work for the sole purpose of installing the new OS?
    Thanks!

  • Application windows off screen while using external monitor

    Hi,
I am using my MacBook frequently with an external monitor attached (lid closed). It happens now, that some applications (e.g.Finder) open windows outside of the screen. What can I do?
This is especially annoying when I want to copy a file and Finder opens the 'Replace/Stop' window and I can't do anything because this windows is outside of the screen (I only see it when pressing F10).
    Any ideas?
    Gernot

I had this happen last night. I was moving a window and it dissappeared. It was off screen. I could see it wit F10 but that was all. What I did was close the window under file in toolbar. Then I opened a new window under the same command in the toolbar. This brought the new window up in the visible window. Hope this helps.

  • Upgrade to Tiger while using Adobe?

This may end up as a two-fold question. I received an iPod nano for Christmas with the giver not realizing that the system requirements are for Mac OS X 10.4.8. I am using 10.3.9. I would upgrade without a problem, but I want to make sure that my Adobe Creative Suite (CS1) will continue to work. Does anybody know? I guess I didn't realize how far behind our software is until doing some research last night, especially considering we just upgraded everything less than 3 years ago. The other side to the question is does anybody know if any iPods are sold that do NOT require 10.4.8? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You can visit the Adobe website an check for system requirements to run the version you got.
I run Tiger with Adobe Illustrator CS an Adobe Photo Shop CS without any problems.
    Good luck ...

  • Using mirrored monitor

I have connected a second monitor to my emac using display port and VGA cables. It all works fine. My question is does anyone know if and l can turn off the Emac screen when using my second monitor. If so how do l do it.... thanks..

Try using the Desktop & Screen Saver pane of System Preferences to set a hot corner on the display and using that corner to sleep it. If that doesn't work, it can't be done.

  • After upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the virtual memory while using external HD

after upgrading to Lion, the Finder will increase the "virtual memory size" while using external HD. I check it using Activity Monitor and found that "Finder" wll increase the "Virtual Memory Size" and "Private Memory Size". and then after a while. the system told me my HD is full and hanging there.
My External HD is 1TB. and I have installed new version Paragon NTFS for Mac V.9.01. I am not sure it is related or not.
but I attached my external HD. the "Finder" will start to increase the "Virtual Memory Size".
please help out this case and solve this issue.
    thank you !!!

The one has nothing to do with the other. Virtual memory size and Private memory size are used by developers to analyze their software. it has nothing to do with anything related to the user.

  • I currently use a Samsung TV with an Apple TV to duplicate my MacBook Pro monitor.  How can I use this system as a extended (not mirror) monitor?

Does anyone have a solution that allows me to use a Samsung TV connected via the AppleTV to my MacBook Pro as an extended (not mirror) monitor?
    Thanks.

I would recommend upgrading your laptop. Does your current laptop have an HDMI port? If so, connect your Mac to your TV with an HDMI cable. Your TV must be compatible, if it is, you will have to understand that it will be no where near the quality of AirPlay.

  • I can't use dual monitors since upgrading to Lion

I use my HD TV as a second monitor for streaming movies etc.  Since upgrading to Lion, I can only use one monitor at a time.  Is anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks

Yes, the blanking of secondary monitors is an issue.
In fact, it is the reason why I went back to Snow Leopard on my 3-screen iMac
I encourage you to contact Apple with feedback
I have taken the following actions:-
    Provided feedback to Apple viahttp://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
    Provided feedback to Apple viahttp://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Submitted a bug/enhancement request via my free Apple Developer account
Written to pretty much every mainstream Mac publication
Encouraged every poster, like yourself, to raise this with Apple in your own words
Next week, I will call Apple Support under the AppleCare agreement for my iMac
Please give them feedback, and we might get this silly design decision changed.

Yes. You should be fine with Snow Leopard, but Lion requires a minimum of 2 GBs of RAM. If you upgrade to Lion I would first upgrade your RAM to at least 4 GBs if your model supports it. Also, see:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • ARM approval error after upgrading to SP14: Database error while using the secure store.

    Dear GRC experts,
After upgrading GRC 10 to SP14, assigning manual passwords during the approval of a request, the approval process is failing.
Here is the scenario; your advice will be appreciated.
Task: Manually assign passwords to multiple systems contained in the request
Where: On the access request, go to “User System Details” tab
Issue: After approving/submitting the request, the error “Database error while using the secure store” is generated
Logs: Nothing on transactions SLG1 or ST22; however ST11 shows the error attached below:
This is the failed approval of the request:
Other scenarios executed as a workaround, and passed the password assignment this time:
The approval will work if only one password is assigned to any of the given systems. The rest of the systems get an auto-generated
    password.
ARM also accepts multiple passwords when the requestor assigns passwords on the “User System Details” prior submitting a
request. The GRC admin can approve once reached for system approval.
AS FYI, “Confirm Password” is only required when creating the request but not on any other stage.
    System information:

I had Leopard on may Mac. I upgraded to Mountain Lion using Snow Leopard. I can't use my video with Mountain Lion. Can I load Snow Leopard on an external hard drive so I can use it with my camera?

First, you cannot do this if you have a Boot Camp partition.
    Second: Create a new partition.
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
    Third: Install Snow Leopard.
Boot from your Snow Leopard DVD. Follow instructions for installation being sure that before you actually install Snow Leopard you have selected the new partition as your target destination.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

  • While using FF Browser, a window appeared, telling me I had an outdated version and should upgrade and it won't complete install nor allow me to uninstall to re

First of all, I have Windows XP/HE/SP3 and my main browser is IE8, tho i also have Google and did have, FF V#21. And while using the FF browser, was alerted that my current version was outdated, etc, even tho I just installed V#21 only 1 week ago, but I took FF's word for it and clicked (x'd) to install the upgrade. The application (AP) used to install was called "Optimum Installer" and had the word "Firefox" in smaller print in the upper left hand corner. This seemed diff from the AP i had used to install just 1 week prior, but since i was using IE8 to install FFV#21 originally, I figured the FF browser used this "Optimum" AP, so I proceeded. The small window then said, "you have chosen to open this file" and yet there was no option to "open" only to "save" or cancel. So i x'd on "save" and my Norton file checker popped up to tell me this file is "safe." But afterwards no install window appeared, so i tried to DL the file again and still no Install window after a total of 8 attempts. I finally found the setup file in "my documents" and opened it and x'd to install. It seemed to work ok, tho again, I was asked alot of questions about making thus and such my default browser, or search engine, or home page, etc, and even some other, but i declined them all, i think, but not sure about one possible miscue. Anyways, the AP told me I'd successfully installed this newer version of FF. So of course i wanted to open it and see how it would work, and i went to my task bar/notification tray to X on the globe icon and instead it showed a "setup" icon. I put my mouse under it and it said "Mozilla Firefox" so i went ahead and x'd on it expecting FF to open. Instead, a small warning appeared telling me i had to reboot for the install..to be completed, so i did, but no change. Tried atleast half a dozen times and nothing, no new or any, version of FF working on my pc now. I even tried to look at support, but no answers, then tried to uninstall and it won't even let me do that, it keeps saying that "your computer must first be restarted to complete a previous upgrade"; yet that already hasn't been working. Also, i went from a V#21 to a V#13.0.1 with 77MB+ of space, which is way more than FF#21. Now I do believe this version is corrupt and really don't want it, but can't get rid of it. I even tried to reinstall V21 (also from IE8, since I don't even have FF browser now) and it goes to a point, but then also tells me I can't get this V21 til I complete an install/upgrade of another version. So basically, i have what i believe is a corrupt/malicious piece of software on my pc, calling itself Mozilla V#13.0.1 - which I can't get rid of, and also can't reinstall the version I had, least i finish installing the one i have but don't think I now want. Keep in mind also, I can't do any of the suggestions from within the FF browser that have been suggested, because I don't have it any more, only IE8 and Google....Any suggestions?

Dear Colbabomb; thankyou for your links.
So far, I looked at your first solution, Revo Uninstaller and it gives you a 30 free trial. Ergo, it will eventually cost money so I'm leery of using those kinds of programs in general, meaning most "free trials" have unwanted strings attached and often are big probs to get rid of later. Perhaps you can assure me that it is easy and very user friendly, before I proceed. And I already ran malwarebytes and it found nothing tho the program still can't be uninstalled. I downloaded Adw Cleaner and during the install, my Norton's security popped up and warned that there were (low risk) threats with two of their "other offers" and i hadn't even actually clicked to agree either of them. Nonetheless, Norton warned me against the "lyrics finder" and "deal ply." In fact, there was a box already with an x in it, saying that you are accepting deal ply if you x on "next." Well, except I unchecked that box before clicking on next, yet when it went to fully install, it still showed that it was adding itself; so, just before the install was 100% completed, I had to abort the whole thing. I really do hope your other suggestions are programs that you personally know that they don't try and trick you. But right now, I would not suggest Adw Cleaner to anyone. I even read the fine print about what they will try and install and how to decline and it still tried sticking stuff on that i believed I had declined. Anyways, i have to leave now, shall pick up later this evening, if my pc is still functioning.
