Upgrading to Lion concerns
Just wondering, if I upgrade to Lion from my current Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 will all my info stay on my imac. Including photos, emails, etc.
I am running time machine backup, but I'm not even certain if it will run correctly on the new opperating system. Will I have to reset up the time machine?
And will everything backed up on it currently still be accessible in the new system?
You don't need to go through Migration Assistant since you will be upgrading the version of Mac OS X on the single machine. All material SHOULD convey over, however, it is always wise to make a clean backup before doing a major upgrade just in case something goes wrong.
It is also wise to go through your settings, such as email, networking, etc., before and then after the upgrade to make sure nothing has been changed during the process.
With the upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard, you will want to go into System Preferences, iCloud and setup your iCloud account if you already have one. If you don't and do not plan on using iCloud then there is nothing you need to do.
It is also good to check Time Machine after the upgrade to see nothing has been changed.
All just good housekeeping principles

Upgrading to lion: concern currently i am running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549) with a windows dual boot (boot camp) on a imac, hardward configuration is good. my question is if i upgrade to lion will it effect my boot camp windows environment in any manner shape or form or will it stay pristine and I will be able to access it with no problem. as for the upgrade does it give you a clean install and upgrade options
any insight would be appreciated.
Also has anyone, added another partition and installed lion in their leaving the snow leopard partion intact.I would ask myself these questions first
What features am I hoping to benefit from by upgrading?
What apps do I have on OSX that I need to still fucntion? (research that they will)
Just a cautionary note - I have had problems, but only upgraded to see what was new - needed nothing, lost a lot -
Is this a "safe" way to upgrade to lion and transfer apps/data to new imac?
I have an older imac running 10.6.8 and I am considering buying a new one.
I read a link with guidleines to upgrade to lion. My question is:
After upgrading to lion, I am going to buy a new imac and want to move to the new imac with the least inconvenience. I have a lot of music app/usb interfaces so the time to reconfigure everything would be very time consuming.
So is the "safe" way to do it?
Do a time machine backup of current configuration.
Follow the link I saw outlining upgrading from 10.6.8 to lion on my current imac.
Get everything working again on the current imac with mountain lion.
Do a time machine backup of the lion configuration.
Get the new imac and on first boot, elect to restore from the time machine backup wiping out what came installed on the new imac.
Another time machine backup on the new imac.
I should be done?
or is there a better /safer way?
I have been putting this off for almost year because of the number of apps I am running and devices I have connected. a short list.
file servers off firewire 800 and 400 ( I know I will need the thunderbolt to firewire adapters).
approx 12-18 usb devices all connected either directly or daisy chained through usb controllers connected to usb controllers.
about 10 external USB drives.
vmware
midi interfaces for piano/guitar.
m-audio fast track ultra
multiple DVD/blu-ray reader/writers
Hence my concern for a smooth transition
thanks in advance. There is really no need to update the older iMac running 10.6 to Lion, especially if you have multiple backups of your User Data. You can easliy move or migrate data from any one of your External HDs or Server to the new iMac.
As for your current iMac:
If you plan on selling the older iMac, Lion is not transferable and you will want to sell it with a clean install of 10.6 and let the new owner upgrade.
If you plan on keeping the older iMac around for others to use and it supports Mountain Lion, then in my humble opinion Mountain Lion is the better upgrade.
As for your other devices:
• Yes, Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter
• Yes, external USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices are backwards compatible
• Sorry, I don't use vmware
• Sorry, I don't use midi interfaces
• Sorry, I don't use m-audio
• Yes, my external DVD drives work with various Mac's running 10.6 thru 10.8
Sorry I can't better answer your Audio questions. If no one else comes along with the answers here, then you might try starting another ASC question focused on those transitions. -
I have Windows XP Pro as my Bootcamp option under Snow Leopard which works very well indeed.
I would like to upgrade to Lion but am concerned re its lack of support for Bootcamp Windows XP
Can I upgrade to Lion and boot into my old Windows XP BootCamp partition as I do at present OR
must I buy Windows v7 and install under the new Bootcamp system.
Also what happens to my Snow Leopard Time Machines backups - can I see them under Lion?
Many thanks

Unable to restore to 10.6.8 after upgrade to Lion
After my troubles upgrading to Lion (see Cannot login after Lion Update), I decided to try a restore to 10.6.8 on my TimeMachine.
I inserted the 10.6 upgrade DVD, booted off of it, and restored to a TM backup dated before I even purchased / downloaded Lion. That restore took a few hours and appeared to proceed without a hitch. When trying to reboot, though, I'm never able to get past the initial grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I never see the login screen. I've left it in this state for about 5 minutes with no visible progress.
I'm concerned that somehow the 10.7 install's secret hidden restore partition is preventing a TimeMachine restore, which is _very_ concerning.
I have successfully used the method above (booting off 10.6 DVD and restoring) before on this machine (e.g. when upgrading the hard drive). So I have some evidence that this was successful before the Lion install.
Needless to say (and I'm apparently not alone), the Lion upgrade appears to have not only made my system unusable but unrestorable.
Has anyone else encountered this sort of situation? Is there some different procedure I need to use for this kind of a restore?
Is anyone at Apple aware of testing the scenario of restoring to 10.6.8 from 10.7? It would seem important to be sure that TimeMachine worked to restore to a point before the upgrade.
Thanks. Thanks for the responses. To clarify, I have done just about everything I could imagine to do a clean install and have now spoken with AppleCare for over four hours following their suggestions. This includes:
Booting from the 10.6 install disk, repartitioning the HD with a single partition (to attempt to remove any evidence of the Lion recovery partition from the borked Lion install), and, using the "Restore From Time Machine" option when booting off the 10.6 DVD, restoring a backup
Booting from the 10.6 install disk, repartitioning the HD, doing a clean install of OS X 10.6. This brings me to a clean install; any attempt to at this point do a Migration using either the Migration Manager or again booting off the 10.6 DVD and restoring a backup returns me to the same non-functional scenario (spinning gear forever on system startup)
Booting from the 10.6 install disk, repartitioning the HD, doing a clean install of OS X 10.6, attempting to copy files from my TM images by hand; not really going to result in a usable system state, esp. when it comes to things in ~/Library/Application Support.
This is not an issue of not doing a clean install as far as I can see. Unless every backup on my drive is bad for the last month, this is not an issue of a bad backup, since I've now tried many of them. (The less pleasant scenario is that FV / TM backups are silently writing unrestorable backups). Unless the reparitioning does not remove the Lion recovery partition, it is not a question of the Lion recovery partition lying around. I have asked several folks about whether the Lion QA process included attempting to restore a 10.6 OS. I have no answer on that; I would be disturbed if it didn't include such a step; making sure you can return to a previous known good state after an install is pretty fundamental.
I'm at a bit of a loss at this point. I've tried everything I can think of to get back to a known good system state after following best practices on backups and suggestions from AppleCare. As far as I can see, my TM backups are unrestorable and there's been no indication of this the entire time I've been relying on TM as a safety net. -
I have a ReadyNas NV+ which I use as NAS storage. I make a lot of home movies in iMovie 11 (mostly family movies of my daughter growing up) which fills up my local HDD fairly quickly. I setup iMovie 11 when I was using Snow Leopard to connect to my NAS as an additional disk in the event library and project. I would move events and projects after I finalized and shared them to the NAS disk in iMovie so it would both clear up space on my local HDD but still be available in the iMovie 11 application.
After I upgraded to Lion, I can no longer see the NAS disk in either the project library or event library. I'm concerned if I have created a condition where I won't be able to access the projects and events which I moved to the NAS disk when I upgraded to Lion. Has anyone else experienced this issue and has anyone else found a solution to this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Did that work for you? I was looking at that too, but was discouraged by having to use a sparsebundle given Snow Leopard had such great NAS support.
FYI to everyone else, I upgraded my ReadyNAS firmware to 4.1.8. NetGear indicated the following updates with the nre firmware, but it didn't fix this problem:
New features and enhancements
1. Added support for Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”.
2. Added warning when NFS access to home shares is enabled.
3. Added a redirect for http://<host>/ip to https.
4. Added enhancements to advanced AFP permission settings.
5. Provide download links for exported users and groups instead of asking for email.
6. Updated ReadyNAS Remote to the latest revision.
Bug fixes
1. Fixed javascript error in FrontView.
2. Delay auto power-off if backup jobs are still queued.
Limitations
1. IE 6 no longer supported.
2. Drives greater than 2TB are not supported.
I found this link which I thought had some useful information: http://carryflag.blogspot.com/2010/06/imovie-event-library-on-network-drive.html
Some people reported success with the terminal command:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
But apparantly, after the Lion update, fewer people reported success with it. Still looking though... If anyone else has more symptoms to add, please let me know. I might try to use a sniffer program and see if I can pull a packet capture. That might reveal some info....
On another note, has anyone had any problems connecting to their Time Capsule in the same fashion? I had an idea of connecting a USB Raid Array to it and connecting through the TC, but wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts or experience with that.... Thanks. -
When upgrading to Lion from SL, is it possible to grow the partition?
The partition in which Snow Leopard resides needs to be larger. Is it possible when upgrading to Lion to make it bigger? Is there another way to grow the Snow Leopard partition w/o migrating to Lion?
You have 4-5 internal drive bays.
Extra drive sleds are also sold so you can swap out drives (powered down of course, no hot swap).
Lion creates a recovery partition - and if you install Lion to its own drive it will be fine, then Setup Assistant will run on first restart and import your files.
There are a few more things to look out for on Mac Pro generally, software, drivers, and hardware.
As for using 20%, 200GB, what some people do is move all the non OS/Apps items to a 2nd media/data/user account hard drive.
Limiting the OS to the outer 25% insures reduced seeks and that it uses the outer faster tracks.
If you use RAID, that is another concern.
Software RAID on Lion, Broken Functionality
SuperDuper will optimize your folders and such, but it won't copy a recovery partition.

Hello all!
I have a macbook (late 2009)
it has the following spec:
Macbook 5,2
2Ghz intel core 2 duo
2gb ram ( which i will upgrade to 4gb at a later date)
120gb hdd
If i upgrade to lion , will it run ok? also ive heard some people complaining about excessive fan noise , will this happen to mine?
i do not want to upgrade and it be real slow.
if anyone could help me i would be more then grateful.
thanks.Where people seem to be having performance issues is on 2GB systems. With Lion, as with other operating systems, the minimum memory is enough to turn the lights on, but not always to ensure reasonable performance. If performance is a concern, plan on the 4GB upgrade when you upgrade to Lion.
Also, ensure you will have 12GB to 18GB+ hard drive space free after the Lion install, for systems usage. Less than that will slow the system down.
Although I haven't been tracking Lion issues closely, it's not unusual to have excessive fan noise immediately after an operating system upgrade, when Spotlight is reindexing the hard drive.
If you haven't already, you might look over the Lion discussions at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion or do a search on 'macbook lion'. -
I would like to upgrade to Lion, mostly to gain access to icloud, but I am concerned that I would lose functionality with ilife. Our imac is a 2009.
You have the full suite of iLife installed? Which version? If it is an old version, it may or may not be compatible with Lion; however, you could easily buy the latest retail version (iLife 11) at the Apple store, online resellers, or ebay. I did that just so I would be able to re-install iDVD if necessary.
In any case, if you want to upgrade, make sure you have a full backup on an external hard drive (just in case) - either Time Machine or a bootable clone copy. That way, if anything does go wrong, you can simply restore to your earlier version. And, if you go ahead, make sure that you copy the Lion installer to a safe place after the download and before the install (the installer disappears after the install) - if you have a copy, you won't have to download it again should that become necessary. -
Upgrading to Lion yield system ununsable
Since upgrading to Lion some icons in my menubar disappeared:
macbook battery indicator
wi-fi
bluetooth among other,
when this occur, other things stop working correctly:
spotlight is not responding (beachball when hovering on top of spotlight in the menu bar)
system preferences hangs whenever the "network" part is clicked
no network is functioning (no wi-fi)
the login screen displays an empty wi-fi icon (like if I was not connected)
One single thing seems to be working:
reboot the computer in safe mode, then in normal mode.
However, the preceding will work until the next mac reboot only. After a regular reboot, the problem would re-occur up to the next "safe reboot".
The following have been tried with a level 2 mac support specialist over the phone.
Fixing permissions
emptying caches in home and system libraries
removing start-up items
creating a new user account (problem persist in the other account)
removing stuff inside the input method folders
creating a new "network location" when the problem is not triggered
I don't know if this is anything related but for me, FaceTime says registration servers cannot process my request at the time being when I want to log-in and FileVault 2 refuses to encrypt the disk pretending not having permission. I also was unable to log-in into anything after my Lion install. I has to reset my root password and re-create my account with same info as describe on this forum to get Lion started..
Definitely not the smootest transition one could expect.I'll add my name to the list of unhappy people following an 'upgrade' to Lion.
Same problem as the original poster, menu bar frozen. CPU temp up at 80 deg C, fans at 6200rpm all the time and SystemUIServer is running at +75%, system is using 50% CPU. Battery life is half of what I used to get.
My Macbook is unuseable in it's current state for any longer than a few minutes. Now having to use my Windows PC as can't stand the constant fan noise. Also concerned about the long term effect on the internal components.
In my opinion Apple has released a poor quality product here. I read that Lion was not ready for shipping and I wish I had waited a few weeks for the first update.
Let's have a patch soon please or my Windows PC may be a permanent fixture. -
Just upgraded to Lion an am discovering that I cannot send email photos from within iPhoto. Error message says bad Internet connection or server not working, when that's not the case. Never happened in Snow Leopard! Help!!!

Hello,
I am using a MacBook Pro. Bought in April 2011. Upgraded to Lion, OSX 10.7.3
I have an Apple mail account that synced with a gmail account in my Mail Program.
I then chose the CLOUD activation. I can find my mail if I go to cloud.com but I no longer get any Apple mail delivered to my Mail program on my computer. My gmail account syncs just fine. In fact, the Mail program doesn't even open any longer when I double click. I have to go to the Mail menu, select Message Viewer to even view my mail program now. The Internet connection is testing fine using the Connection Doctor. But when the Connection Doctor program just whirs for eternity and never finishes checking the accounts.
Is this a bug? Do you have to set up your mailbox again for Apple mail to get it to sync after having mail hosted on the Cloud? Or does hosting on the Cloud mean I now always have to go the hassle of logging in at the cloud site to even access my Apple mail?
Any ideas out there? I am sure there are Mac geniuses, the real ones, floating around in cyber space and would love to get some intelligent directions to solve this new issue.
Cheers
AnneI would like to add that Comcast is my internet provider. Perhaps that is part of the issue although the Connection Doctor confirms the mail box is connecting to the internet. No other function processes when Connection Doctor program is used to find the source of the issue. I have read forum posts but am unable to find a way to get my Apple mail to be delivered to my computer. It worked fine up until I chose to transfer mail to the Cloud. My mail account is a .mac account.
Still hoping someone out there can help me.
thanks,

Late 2010 MacBook Pro 15", upgraded to Lion on Sat 23rd no external display does not work
Hi all,
Wanted to ask this question here see if anyone might have a solution to my problem. I have a Late 2010 Macbook Pro 15" which I upgraded to Lion yesteray. Ever since that upgrade when I try to connect to my TV to watch a video no joy the image looks like the colours are out.
I have tried it on different resolutions and always the same. Then for some reason the MacBook Pro split the screen in two. So now I see the right of the screen on the left of the TV and the left on the righ with a big black line done the middle.
Priror to the Lion upgrade everything was fine. Only since Lion has this been a problem.
I am using a Minidisply to HDMI cable to go direct into my Phillips 42" Plasma, and I have not got a clue why this is doing this. The strange thing is it works ok on my Samsung BX2450 down the same cable no problems at all just the TV that has issues.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

I have a 3rd generation ipod nano. I recently upgraded to Lion which is causing lots of issues. Aside from that, I went to the Itunes store to purchase books like I have done at least 100 times before with no problems. Now I can by the book and get it to my computer, however when I tried to download the book to my 3rd generation ipod the dialog box informed me that to download any new audiobook purchases I would need an ipod touch. My ipod nano 3rd generation serves my purposes just fine. Why should I be forced to buy something I do not want just to continue something I have always done seamlessly? I know this is more of a rant than a question but I am sure someone else out there has had this happen to them. Maybe you could share your thoughts on how to work around this issue if possible?
I forgot to add the last obvious and crucial step I had taken - plugging a different iPod into my system. It was also not recognized. That was the final proof I needed to determine if the problem was device or system. But now what?
I truly appreciate any help I can get!
Thanks again...
