Upgrading to lion loose my data

Good afternoon everybody
I am interested in upgrading my sister's Mac pro from Leopard  to Lion. My main concern (avoid beating of my life from my sister) will the upgrade loose all of her data? I am not really familiar with leopard operating system. I went to genius bar but e line was long so I left. I know I should backup the data just in case
But still........
Please free to advice me.
Ps. I bought an external hardrive with FireWire for her laptop ( she refuses to to use),so what should I do?
Thank you
Sam

I don't think Migration Assistant will take the user data from a Leopard clone?
(Somebody tell me if I am wrong, can you download the installer to a Leopard clone and do an erase/install from there if it is bootable).
Maybe you mean Snow Leopard, not just Leopard, that would be a lot easier, a bootable clone would work fine and migration Assistant would take the user data and apps over?
But many of the apps will need updating anyway.  I suggest copying these data files to a separate folder on the external disk,
Include archives for:
For Address Book              File Export>Archive
For each calendar in iCal    File>Export>Export
For Safari Bookmarks        File>Export Bookmarks
Google Earth                     My Places
etc
and to have the other app disks at hand to re-install, eg iLife and iWorks, MS Office (it must be 2008 or later, 2004 will not run)  etc
You need to check the versions are all compatible with Lion.
http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
If you have Snow Leopard, you can simply install on top of the existing OS, but if it is Leopard:
Boot into the clone (hold the option key at startup to select it)
... and buy and download the Lion installer to the clone, here:
http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/how-to-buy/
Use the clone's Disk Utility to erase the existing MBP hard disk, check the disk and remove any partitions, then install Lion to it. Then migrate the user data.
There will be a lot of further work to do, downloading and installing updated software for Adobe Flash, Java, Perian and your antivirus (ClamXav is good and free), for a start.
I know your sister will understand

  • Has anyone experienced wi-fi connection dropping after upgrading to Lion?

My MacBook which still runs Snow Leopard is working fine while the iMac which has been upgraded to Lion looses wi-fi connection every couple of minutes.
Both machines use the same netowrk and are roughly the same distance from the router...

I have been on the phone with APPLE CARE this morning and they were very helpful and enabled me to fix my wifi issues.
Before speaking with APPLE CARE I tried so many of the unusual little tricks on this board (and others) which seemed to be working uniquely for certain people. It turns out the problem in my case isn't LION as such, or my WiFi rather it's to do with the SECURITY on my ROUTER.
I had an old MacBook at home which was very useful as I was easily able to make the adjusments on my Router through this to then later allow my new iMac (LION) to log on etc.
I'm using a NETGEAR router, but the procedure will be much the same for other routers etc.
What I did was sign in to my router (on my older MacBook in my case):
    http://192.168.0.1
Put it my USERNAME and PASSWORD (which, by the way, is usually:
    USERNAME: admin
    PASSWORD: password
    Then selected WIRELESS SETTINGS.
Within WIRELESS SETTINGS there is a subheading entitled WIRELESS SECURITY.
Within WIRELESS SECURITY there are four options:
    1) Disable
    2) WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
    3) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
    4) WPA-802.1x
    I had
    2) WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
!! THIS WAS THE PROBLEM !!
    According to APPLE:
WEP is being used less frequently as it appears to be not as SECURE as it's contemporaries (namely WPA etc). As a result LION struggles to communicate with the router using this security. BUT the good news is it CAN be easily changed!
For a home setup Option 3:
    3) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
Seems to be the best option. Option 4 is a for a bigger setup (I wasn't listening too much, but apparently it's more suited to businesses using their own servers/networks etc?!).
    Next things we did was:
    SELECT OPTION 3:
    3) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
After selecting it asked me to enter a new password, so I did.
Then I selected APPLY (or SAVE depending on your router). It took a minute to load...
Then I went on to my new iMac (LION) clicked on
SYSTEM PREF > NETWORK > ADVANCED and REMOVED (pressing the negative / '-' symbol) the network I've been struggling to get on for the last two days.
Then ADDED (pressing the positive / '+' symbol) a 'new' network giving it the same title obviously as the one I had just deleted. It'll ask what SECURITY you want of the options, but just leave it as 'None' (as your WiFi will work it out itself). After this press ADD, then OK in the next window. Lastly press 'APPLY'.
After this -  go up to your WiFi putton on your top bar, click it, then select the new network you've just created (which will of course have the same name as your old one) then when asked for a password put in your NEW ONE as you created on your ROUTER...
    ...Alas IT SHOULD WORK!
It did for me, and the chap on the phone was so very useful and said this will be in the info they'll be putting on the discussion boards ASAP. I'm sorry if ym explanation has been a ittle convoluted as I'm not a techy person, but wanted to share this after sharing the struggle with so many.
    Good luck!

  • Can you loose you data when upgrading from snow leopard to os lion?

Will I loose my data if I upgrade from os leopard to lion?

You can lose your data during any upgrade, in fact you don't even need to be doing anything out of the ordinary for your  hard drive to die. Therefore it is vital that you always have a current backup of your system, preferably a Time Machine backup and a bootble clone made through a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner. This is essential if by chance something does go wrong.
Now I've finished scaring you, I have never had a bad experience updating or upgrading, but as your data is precious you really have to protect it just in case.
    Good Luck

  • If i upgrade to lion, will i loose my applications?

I have other applications that i didnt buy on the app store on my mac. So i was wondering if i upgrade to lion, will i loose those applications? or can i save them on a hard drive or something?

You don't lose any apps or data, but it would be wise to do a backup before upgrading.

  • Lost data after upgrade to Lion

Hi. I recently upgraded to Lion on my Macbook Pro and after a crash, my data was lost. The documents and downloads folders were empty. Fortunately I have a PC backup of the data and when I tried to restore the music to Itunes I was getting error messages about my MAC hard disk being full. Is the data still there? If so where? As it is not showing and a search for music on the hard disk yielded nothing. The capacity of my HD is 250GB and before the upgrade it had about 125GB free. I suspect the data was not removed but merely 'marked for deletion' and parked somewhere during the upgrade.

To find out if it really is still there, check this FAQ* on disk space:

You posted in the OS 10.3 (Panther) & below. Suggest you repost in the Lion forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

  • Is this a "safe" way to upgrade to lion and transfer apps/data to new imac?

I have an older imac running 10.6.8 and I am considering buying a new one.
I read a link with guidleines to upgrade to lion. My question is:
After upgrading to lion, I am going to buy a new imac and want to move to the new imac with the least inconvenience. I have a lot of music app/usb interfaces so the time to reconfigure everything would be very time consuming.
So is the "safe" way to do it?
Do a time machine backup of current configuration.
Follow the link I saw outlining upgrading from 10.6.8 to lion on my current imac.
Get everything working again on the current imac with mountain lion.
Do a time machine backup of the lion configuration.
Get the new imac and on first boot, elect to restore from the time machine backup wiping out what came installed on the new imac.
Another time machine backup on the new imac.
    I should be done?
or is there a better /safer way?
I have been putting this off for almost year because of the number of apps I am running and devices I have connected. a short list.
file servers off firewire 800 and 400 ( I know I will need the thunderbolt to firewire adapters).
approx 12-18 usb devices all connected either directly or daisy chained through usb controllers connected to usb controllers.
    about 10 external USB drives.
    vmware
    midi interfaces for piano/guitar.
    m-audio fast track ultra
    multiple DVD/blu-ray reader/writers
Hence my concern for a smooth transition
    thanks in advance.

There is really no need to update the older iMac running 10.6 to Lion, especially if you have multiple backups of your User Data. You can easliy move or migrate data from any one of your External HDs or Server to the new iMac.
    As for your current iMac:
If you plan on selling the older iMac, Lion is not transferable and you will want to sell it with a clean install of 10.6 and let the new owner upgrade.
If you plan on keeping the older iMac around for others to use and it supports Mountain Lion, then in my humble opinion Mountain Lion is the better upgrade.
    As for your other devices:
    • Yes, Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter
    • Yes, external USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices are backwards compatible
    • Sorry, I don't use vmware
    • Sorry, I don't use midi interfaces
    • Sorry, I don't use m-audio
    • Yes, my external DVD drives work with various Mac's running 10.6 thru 10.8
Sorry I can't better answer your Audio questions. If no one else comes along with the answers here, then you might try starting another ASC question focused on those transitions.

  • I'm unable to open itunes after the recent upgrade. Runtime error R6034 is the error message. I recently replaced my iPhone and I don't want to loose my data by uninstalling and re-installing the itunes?

    Hi,
I've recently replaced my iphone 5 and I couldn't restore my data into my new phone, as it asked me to do the software upgrade on itunes in my computer. So, I did the itunes upgrade, which is now causing the Runtime error R6034. I wonder if I would loose my data (i.e., can't restore the data into my new phone), if I follow the uninstalling & re-installing steps. Plz advice, as how this runtime error can be fixed and at the sametime, I will still be able to restore my data into my new phone.

Uninstalling & Re-installing iTunes will not delete your iTunes Library Data.
    Do the following:
Uninstall from Windows the following four programs: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support. You do this from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple and note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
Run the iTunes installation as an administrator, just Right click iTunes installer and Run as Administrator.

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

For weeks I have been viewing a doggy day care center via their web cam.  This weekend I upgraded to Lion and have been unable to view the center.  I get an error message for Java plug-in 1.6.0_29 ....webcam class not found.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Sorry, don't know what else to suggest unless there's a URL to the problem stream that someone here can try. Otherwise we can't test it to try and determine what might be wrong.
BTW, make sure they're testing it with a Mac, not with a Windows system. If they test only with Windows, what they say is or is not working doesn't mean much.

  • Do i lose files when upgrading to Lion?

I am preparing to upgrade to Lion fromsnowleapard, i don't have a back up, but my question is:
Do I lose files when upgrading to Lion? I have microsoft office for MAC 2011 installed and files for garageband which I realy don't want to loose!

If you have files you don't want to lose, you should back up your system regardless of upgrading or not.  Buy an external drive and clone your system or use Time Machine to back it up.
The normal Lion upgrade won't delete your data if things go correctly, any hiccups and you'll need that backup.
