Upgrading to Lion OS - what do I need to do

I need to upgrade to 10.7 lion to move to the cloud.  Any precautions?  I also run Quicken Essentials and am reasonably confident that will be OK.  Any guidance or tips, anyone?

Use this checklist before you upgrade for best results:
Make sure your computer can run Lion.  System requirements -->http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html.  Go to Apple Menu --> About This Mac to check your specs.
Validate that your applications will work with Lion.  Open System Profiler (Applications --> Utilities --> System Profiler).  Select "Applications", give it a few moments to let the window populate with all your installed apps, then sort by "Kind".  Anything catagorized as "Intel" or "Universal" should, in general, work with Lion.  Anything catagorized as "Power PC" won't.  Use this site -->http://roaringapps.com/apps:table --> to validate specific software compatibility.  Perform software updates or upgrades as required.
Check with the manufacturers of your peripherals to ensure compatibility.  Install updated drivers, if needed.
Run Disk Utility (Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility).  Installing a new OS on a bad system won't do you any favors.  Select the disk you want to install on and "Verify" it.  If any problems are found "Repair" it.  Repeat, if necessary, until no problems are detected.  Repair permissions, too.
Lastly, and most importantly, back up your current system.  You can back up to an external volume using Time Machine.  I would, highly, recommend also creating a bootable clone of your existing system on an external disk.  You can do this with Carbon Copy Cloner (freeware, http://www.bombich.com/), SuperDuper (shareware, http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html), or any other similar application.

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 running 10.5.8, I understand that I can not upgrade to Lion, so what will happen to my Mobile me, which I can not live with out? Also will I be able to get Icloud to work?

Hi Mary, the other so called "Features" of iClound will not work for like Syncing, but eMail will.
MobileMe & dot Mac will still work last I heard.
iCloud Mail setup, even in 10.4/10.5…
Don't delete your old account yet. Just setup a new one in Mail>Preferences>Accounts, little plus icon. Choose IMAP as account type, not ,mac or MobileMe.

I am getting "An unknown error has occurred (3014)" on my iPad2 while trying to upgrade to iOS6. What do I need to do to fix this?

    Hi apiccolo5,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
See these articles for steps that can help you resolve the issue you're seeing:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.
    Best,
    Jeremy

    David, welcome to the discussions.
Look this link over and see if it answers your questions.
I would get anything you need to keep from OS8 on an external of some sort or back it all up so you can retrieve it.

  • I bought my 20" iMac in Nov of 2007 and when I try to purchase the upgrade for lion I'm told I need 2GB of memory and I only have 1GB.  How can I get more?  I am currently running snow leopard

Trying to upgrade to Lion on my 20" iMac that I bought in Nov. 2007.  Currently I'm running on MAC OS X version 10.6.8.  When I tried to buy the upgrade I got a response that Lion requires 2 GB of memory and I only have 1 GB.  How can I get more memory and will my computer be compatible with Lion when I do get more memory?

Yes you can install more RAM. Up to 6 GBs. Two - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs. For the maximum use one 4 GB and one 2 GB. Otherwise install a pair of 2 GB modules for a total of 4 GBs.
You can purchase suitable RAM at DataMem or OWC. OWC also has video tutorials on installation.

  • If I upgrade to Lion from Leopard will I need to reinstall all my programs?

I have a bunch of photo & video editing software as well as some other things such as parallels on installed on my computer. I really don't want to have to reinstall everything all over again. I've tried to search this question, but I'm having one of those "technically challenging" days. For some reason, I can find everything about Lion except this.... I'd really love to upgrade, but if I need to reinstall everything, I don't have time to do right now.
    Thanks so much!

You can upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.5 should run under 10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/  You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/
To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion for $29 from the App Store if you have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly As for programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • When you upgrade from Lion to ML, do you need to erase your external backup drive and start over in Time Machine, or does it just automatically pick up from where it stopped with Lion?

This is a 500 GB G-Drive mobile external hard drive that I've been using since I got my MacBook Pro in '09. So I've had it from Leopard through Lion. Should I have been erasing it each time a new operating system comes out and starting over?

No - just continue to use Time Machine as you have always been.
Not only is erasing it unnecessary, doing that would eliminate the only practicable way of undoing an OS X upgrade.

  • Someone tried to email me a video that is larger than 10.8 MB, and it bounced back to her.   I have IMAC G5, Lion, Version 10.7.4 Lion.   What do I need do to be able to receive larger videos?

Someone tried to email me a video that is larger than 10.8 MB, and it bounced back to her.   I have IMAC G5, Lion, Version 10.7.4

Some ISPs impose email attachment limits and that is quite often 10 mb, some have other maximums. Additionally, not all users have fast connections, so someone may not appreciate getting large attachments. It is usually recommended to upload videos you want to share to an online site to share them with others. In your case, your friend should check with her or his ISP to ask about maximums.
FWIW, you need to update your profile. If you are running Lion, you do not have a G5 - those were PPCs and discontinued in 2006 when Intel iMacs were introduced.

  • What do I need to do to prepare computer for Lion?

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro and I operate on Snow Leopard OsX.  I would like to upgrade to Lion.  What do I need to do to do this?

Have a look here   Bombich's Get Ready for Lion tutorial.
Also... Check the Compatibility of Third Party Applications you may be using...

  • My mac has a intel core duo, not a intel 2 core duo, can I still upgrade to lion

My Mac has an intel core duo processor, will I still be able to upgrade to Lion? What do I need to do if I can't?

    I have a similar question.
    I have a 2006 xeon macpro.
Will i beable to upgrade to lion.
I saw this on the website today.
Step 1:Make sure your Mac can run Lion.
Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion. Find out if your current Mac has one of these processors by clicking the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, then choosing About This Mac.
    Here is what i have.
      Processor Name:          Dual-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.66 GHz
Will i be good to upgrade?
    Thanks

  • If I upgrade to Lion do I need to reinstall my third party software?  Office, etc

If I upgrade to Lion do I need to reinstall my third party software?  Office, etc

If you install Lion in place and are using versions supported in Lion, no.  You should check with your third party software vendors to see whether upgrades are required to work with Lion.  For example, since you mentioned Office, the 2008 and 2011 versions are compatible with Lion.  The 2004 version is not. It is generally a good idea to upgrade your apps first, and then upgrade to Lion, as you may sometimes need the older version of the app to migrate data to the new version.
