Upgrading to Logic Pro 7 to 8 (but on a different computer)

I might be an idiot asking this question. I just bought a Mac Pro and was previously running Logic Pro 7.1.1 on my laptop, but I want to move everything over to the Mac Pro now. Do I need to buy Logic Pro 8, or am I eligible for some kind of free upgrade version that I can install on the new computer? I know there is an upgrade to 8, but I'm guessing it's only if you keep using your same computer and upgrade to Leopard. Anyways, any help would be appreciated, I'm just trying to figure out if I have to spend more money. Thanks!

No, you will need to buy the Logic Pro 8 upgrade, which will cost you $199.
You can install it fresh on your new Mac, but you will need your dongle from version 7 as proof of ownership. Somewhere within the Logic 8 install, it asks you to plug-in your dongle. It reads the serial number from it, and then proceeds with the installation.

If you still have the receipt or other proof of purchase, you can ask Apple to send you the serial. Otherwise, bad luck mate.. Good news is, you can now buy Logic Pro 9 from App Store for just 199 USD

First, you can (and should) always back up your copy of Logic before updating, that way you can always go back to the earlier version if you need it. If you do that you might as well update to the latest version of Logic.
Going to 10.8 won't update Logic, but you'd probably want to update Logic (and most other apps) to the newest versions if you do a major OS update like that.

Is the upgrade from logic pro 7.1.1 to 7.2 still available out there somewhere? I know I'm a bit behind the rest of the world but financially I'm taking the 'do the best with what you can' route!
Never used logic before, moving up from garageband and cubase sx cos everyone says it's a better program.

If I remember correctly, the 7.2 update was a "Paid for" update, with a new dvd.... so you are most likely out of luck.
The good news is that Logic Pro is pretty cheap on the Appstore

I was about to upgrade from Logic Pro 7 to Logic Studio 9 when i noticed that all the fetures i need are actually now in cheaper Logic Express 9.
So would it be possible to upgrade to Logic Express 9 from Logic Pro 7? or will it only upgrade from older versions of Logic Express?

Hi,
guess that's not possible. But i strongly recommend upgrading your Logic Pro 7 to Logic Studio. It's not that much more money, but i bet once you have the new Express version, you'll desperately miss some of the features you only have with Logic Pro/Studio.
I would recommend to call apple support or ask a dealer to find the correct upgrade version.

There is no update, you have to purchase Logic 9 from the App Store, it's $199, which is close to the price of an update.
Warning, if you do purchase Logic 9 from the App store it will download 2GB of additional patches/sounds/loops...etc. This is for first time buyers so their App Store Logic will have some basics to work with before trying to download the additional 20+GB of loop/instrument data. If you have a full installtion of Logic 8 it's possible the 2GB of data Logic initially downloads will mess with the instruments and sounds you've been using, past projects may not load properly. Just something to be aware of.

The cost of the Full Logic Pro 9 from the App Store is less than the cost of the discontinued Boxed Upgrade set for Logic Studio (if you could find one) ... so you might as well purchase the full Logic Pro 9 from the App store and be done.

Hola, entra en BIOS y mirate como tienes las opciones de boot, es posible que tengas en primer lugar la opcion de arranque desde tarjeta de red, algo similar a "Boot to Network".
Repasa igualmente por si acaso la opcion "Wake on Lan" en el caso la traiga la BIOS, si la tienes debe estar desactivada (disable), aunque no es relevante en este caso, no esta de mas que lo compruebes.

How do I upgrade to Logic Pro from Logic Express?

When I decided to dump ProTools and go with Logic, it was easy because Express was pretty cheap and there was always an upgrade path to Logic Studio. Now it's version 9 and I don't see an option to upgrade to Logic Pro 9 from Logic Express 9. Can you guys help me out here?

Based on the replies in the Logic Express forums, it looks like I'll just have to suck it up until Logic 10 comes out.
I think I would feel totally hosed if it weren't for the fact that I recently got Komplete 8 Ultimate, so I don't really care for the Logic synths.

Upgraded to Logic Pro 9 but have concerns

I have upgraded to logic 9 and have noticed all is not what is used to be in terms of performance.
The swirling multi coloured apple icon that shows the system is busy (which I had never ever seen on version 8) seems to make an appearance every 10 mins or so. Usually when loading loops...opening the iMac...loading projects..etc. I notice that at these times, my Lacie drive starts flashing too. Is it possible that the upgrade has located some files on the external drive?
I would also say that 1 in 5 times, the iMac will not boot correctly and needs a second reboot.
Can anybody tell me if I need to upgrade drivers or any other updates I should get in order to get back to the smooth incredibly reliable performance I had with V8?

You SHOULD still be able to run both!
One trick you could try before installing Logic X, is to "Get Info" on the Logic Express Icon, and LOCK it.
This way, in case the new Logic X DOES want to overwrite Logic Express, it won't be able to.
