i own a macbook pro oler of 2007 but it has all the requirements than mac os x mavericks have can i updated to mavericks without having anyproblem and my mac would be able to run smouthly ????? thanks in advance

1)  The choice to Upgrade or not is yours to make.
2)  It is both Prudent and Recommended to Backup Before any Major Update or Upgrade.
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
3)  RAM... would recommend at least 4GB of RAM... if not 8 GB
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
See Here  >  OWC RAM  >  http://www.macsales.com
The above site also has videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...
4)  Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...
Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Mavericks, Lion and Mountain Lion...

  • Will upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) affect the running of the installed 3rd party softwares/programs?

I have just received an email encouraging me to upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Currently I do have in my computer several 3rd party software and programs (from Adobestuff, finalcut Pro, MS Office, ILife etc.
Will upgrading to OS X Mavericks affect the running of these software /programs?  Will I need to also upgrade these softwares?

There may be issues with compatibilty, as with any OS upgrade. Snow leopard (10.6.N) includes a piece of software from Apple called Rosetta. This software allows older PowerPC applications to run on Intel based Macs. This software does not run on any OS X higher than the latest Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. You can see if you have any of programs that require Rosetta installed by bringing up the "System Information" application through spotlight (click on the magnifying glass icon on the upper right, type System Information in the search field and select the application thta is found).
Once in System Information select "Applications" under "Software" near the bottom of the list. Scroll through the list of applications and if any indicate that they are PowerPC based then they will not run under Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Caught in a conundrum while trying to upgrade a Mac Mini (mid 2010) from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion

    Hi gang,
I am in a very frustrating position as I try to upgrade my Mac Mini (mid 2010) from OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to whatever the latest version of Mountain lion is. The reason I am doing this is because the original hard drive died and the Mini sat there for 6 months before we decided to get a new hard drive and revive it.
I installed a new 500GB 7200rpm SATA drive and the problems began.
First I couldn't get Mountain Lion installed as a fresh OS installation (using both a USB drive and a DVD to no avail). It just wouldn't go. The grey Apple logo/loading screen would come up and just sit there doing nothing while the loading icon spun.
I then tried installing Snow Leopard (the OS that the Mini came with when it was new). After some messing around, that got done.
However, a peculiar thing happens when the Mini boots. Everything loads up into Snow Leopard, but although the mouse curser moves, I cannot click on anything or use the keyboard for 4-5 minutes. Then it just work (I am typing this on the Mini). This happens every time.
Now, when I updated to 10.6.8, I was able to load up the App Store and download the Mountain Lion install app. I clicked it and went through the initial copying of files and then the restart, but after the reboot, the grey loading screen would not progress. I rebooted again and held down the Option key to check out the available boot volumes, and all I saw was the installation DVD I had in there for Snow Leopard and a hard disk volume called "Mac OS X Installer."
So I booted into the Snow Leopard install DVD and opened Disk Utility to check things out. I did a verify disk and a permissions repair. Interestingly, the first repair I did gave me the message that the ACL was missing from Volumes and that is was fixed. I read something somewhere which talked about the Access Control List and mouse/keyboard issues. But who knows. When I boot back into the Mini as normal I am returned to the fully-functioning Snow Leopard installation, like nothing happened.
And now here is the kicker: it appears that the Firewire bus is hooped. In the Profiler, when I view the FireWire settings I get the message, "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices." So I am pretty sure the one thing I cannot do is boot the Mini into target disk mode attached to my Mac Pro and installed Mountain Lion that way.
So to recap: I can't finish the Mountain Lion installation because the install won't continue after rebooting because there is something wrong with the underlying base system, which might be hardware (FW bus) related. I think.
    Some things I have tried:
    Resetting the SMC
    Resetting the PRAM
    Reparing permissions
Booting into Safe Mode (doesn't work)
Booting into Verbose Mode to observe what happens (I get the "Can't load the Bootcache.playlist" error, which I suspect is related to the screwed up FW bus)
Trying to boot using Internet Recovery (doesn't work)
Booting into Single User Mode and attempting the "fsck -y" etc. sequence to try and repair the ACL that way
    So I am stuck.
I guess the question is, should I get an external HD enclosure and install Mountain Lion onto the hard drive that way and hope it works when I put it back into the Mini?
Any other ideas? I have spent a couple days ******* around with this is am running out of ideas...
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

No, but is something goes wrong with the installation you will wish you had a backup, so make one before upgrading.

  • Will CS3 work if I upgrade to Mac OS 10.6 from 10.5.8?

Will CS3 work if I upgrade to Mac OS 10.6 from 10.5.8?

My standard disclaimer: Do not do an upgrade install of an operating
system. Back up all of your data, deactivate you software and wipe the
    harddrive.
Other than that bit of advice, yes, CS3 is supported under Snow Leopard.

I recently upgrade my mac air to maverick and now my version of iphoto won't work.  What can I do??

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

  • Can i just upgrade to the OS X Mavericks from a 10.6.8 Snow leopard?

wondering if i need to upgrade to mountain lion first or I can just jump straight to Mavericks?
Plus, will any data be lost?

No you don't. You can update to Mavericks from 10.6.8 via the App Store.
And your data should not be lost. But it is always recommend that you backup your data using Time Machine before running the update, just be safe.

  • System Preferences stuck after Yosemite upgrade- advice on reverting to Maverick from Time Machine backup?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Maverick overnight on my mid 2012 MacBook air via app store.  On first boot up this morning, I did NOT choose to encrypt my hard drive or use iCloud during set-up. I was proceeding thru the set-up steps, then got an unresponsive iCloud system preferences window, with a small drop down window to set up an apple id, asking for birthday, security questions, etc.  I have an apple id, and drop down is too small to reveal security questions or allow me to respond.  Quit didn't work, and I started trolling this support site to find out what to do.  I finally managed to force quit it just now. I am NOT a power user, I use my computer for email, photo organization, internet surfing, and some docs and spreadsheets. (I retired and switched to MAC to avoid all the microsoft BS, and haven't looked back. :-)
After reading all the posts here of people having trouble with yosemite on my critical uses, (email, etc) and the complicated answers to fix things, I am really out of my league. My goal now is to get to where I was last night before the upgrade, and wait until Apple fixes the many issues people are discovering before trying Yosemite again.  I did do a complete Time Machine backup prior to the upgrade.  My questions:
    1.  What issues, if any, are people having after reverting back to Mavericks after a Time Machine recovery?
    2.  Are there any special instructions to do this restore that are not in the standard restore instructions? Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
I am a bit concerned to move forward, so any advice or re-assurance will enable me to take the next step.  I am gonna hang out and see what I hear before I take the plunge to time machine restore!

Yes, Mavericks has smashed people's old backups.. start a new backup in a different location.. or archive off the old backup from the TC onto a USB drive.. wipe the drive and start again. You can then access the backups on the USB any time you want.. plug it into the computer and use TM to look at the files.
Spend a bit of time reading how TM works.
And what you can do with it.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Even if you just skim through FAQ.. check out how to mount TM backups from another mac..(effectively your old Mountain Lion install is another mac).
    http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
Keeping your old backup intact makes good sense.. !!

  • Photoshop CS6 can't save to server after upgrading to Mac OS Yosemite Server from Mac Lion Server

We recently upgraded our server from a Mac Pro 2008 with OS X Lion Server to a Mac Mini 2014 with LaCie 20TB 5Big Thunderbolt 2 RAID drive. Everything is working fine with the exception of Photoshop. It does it intermittently but once it happens it will continue to do so. We get message like "Can't save to disk because of disk error" and "Can't save file because of program error" . Sometime we are able to do a "save as" and save over it. Most of the time we have to "save as" with a different file name and then rename and recopy the file. We have check permission on all the file as well as the server HD has ignore ownership checked. Again only three things changed. 1) Sever hardware change from Mac Pro to Mac Mini. 2) Server software upgraded from 10.7 Lion to 10.10 Yosemite(both have the latest update). 3) Drive when from internal on Mac Pro to External Thunderbolt 2 LaCie drive. We have no problem with Illustrator or Indesign. Only Photoshop. Anyone with any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you seem to be using Photoshop in a way that Adobe discourages, so you may not be getting a lot of helpful advice.

  • Should I upgrade to the new os Mavericks from 10.6.8?

So the reason I am still in os 10.6.8 is that I tried Lion when it first came out and I had 2 major issues.
    1. My mail which has an archive going back to 2006 was alllllll messed up.
    2. My occupation is using photoshop and suddenly photoshop was so slow i would draw a line and it would wait a second for the line to appear. I can't have that sort of slow down in my productivity. If it's ain't broke don't fix it, right?
Well it was impossible to uninstall lion so I had to have techserv in NY wipe my computer and reinstall 10.6. ugh. Luckily I backed up but it was a wasted few days of work. Since this experience, I am sortof of the mind one should keep the program versions that were current when the computer was made if you don't want a computer that drags.
My computer is a 12 inch laptop: 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo, 4 gb 1067 MHz DDR3, (currently running 10.6.8)
Short question, are the benifits of the operating stytem worth it or is this going to mess up my computer (specififcally in the ways mentioned above)?
