Upgrading to Mavericks causes my MBP to freeze once or twice a day...

Does anyone have the same problem and more important, perhaps a solution to this problem?
I recently upgraded to Mavericks on my Macbook Pro 13inch from mid 2009. However, sometimes the system freezes. The cursor in (for instance) Word does blink, but the macbook does not respond to any button. The only way to get the system active again is to hold down the power button and force it to shut down.
The problem only seems to appear when, for a brief moment, the system is not used but idle. It never happened when i was working with the machine...
Anyone any tips?? I had to restart it more often the past days then in the 4 years before i have upgraded it to Mavericks...
Thanks in advance!

Did finishing the filevault encryption make any difference? Yesterday it froze again, in the middle of streaming a football match... So the problem does not only occur when the system is idle... Is anything known about a fix for this bug in an update? And if so, when will this update come?

I have implemented a thread that polls for messages on a Queue. After I have introduced this into our application, on occasion the server stops responding.
The server can run a whole day and it may happen once or twice. The thread runs constantly when the server is up.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

What version of JDK and O/S are you using ?
What type of application has these threads and how does this start ?

    Hi,
I finally made the upgrade to Maverick and now my printer/scanner won't work.  Help!!  I have the HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-one

Well no luck so far.  When I get to the point that it asks to "add" a printer, it doesn't allow me to do it.  Nothing comes up so I can't move forward.
Donald, what is an Open Source Printer Driver?  I am unfamiliar with this and wouldn't even know how/where to begin!!

  • Upgrading to Maverick causing problems

I recently upgraded my operating system to Maverick.
Since then my time machine back up disk won't back up due to lack of space, which wasn't previously an issue and my Mac won't shut down properly just goes to blank white screen and freezes.
Not sure if the two things are linked or what's causing the problem.
Any suggestions and help gratefully received

  • Will upgrading to mavericks cause me to lose my personal files?

by this i mean: photos, vids, apps, music
also will i have to resync my iphone to my itunes?

As with any upgrade DO A BACK UP FIRST, so you will have a source for your data should it be lost.
That being said said your data should still be there, if there is NOT a rpoblem with the download or update

  • MBP 17" freezes once in a while under Windows 7 64b

    Hi,
    CONTEXT
I have purchased a MBP 17" a month ago and installed successfully Windows 7 64 bits & all MBP drivers through Boot Camp.
    ISSUE
However, once in a while (let's say once every 4 sessions), my laptop just freezes: it can be at start up (before logon screen), or when I'm
working under Windows. There is no way to anticipate this freeze: it just happens.
    ANALYSIS
I would assume this is caused by my graphics card (?)
By the way, under Windows 7 Control Panel > Maintenance Center (*), I found a generic warning (twice) about an error on my video card
(*) Sample screenshot (not mine): http://www.notebooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/MaintenanceChevron.jpg
Would anyone have an idea what I should do here? Is the BootCamp NVIDIA driver outdated? Is there any risk to download & install a new driver from the NVIDIA website?
FYI I've browsed previous topics, and couldn't find relevant fix for it.
    Many thanks for your help!
    Regards,
    Nicolas
    CONFIGURATION
Default OS (450Go partition): Windows Seven 64 bits with BootCamp
Native OS (50Go partition): Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M et Intel HD
Chip: Intel Core i5, 2,53 GHz
    BootCamp: 3.1

    Hi PSolt,
    Thanks for your feedback.
Actually I've applied a fix found in a different post (see below).
I will now "test" it for a few days to check if it definitely fixes my issue, and will then update this post.
    Post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2507994&tstart=0
    Solution suggested by opus131:
    1. Go to the nVidia driver download page: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
    2. Go for "Option1: Manually find drivers for my NVIDIA products."
    Product Type: GeForce
Product Series: GeForce 300M Series (Notebook)
    Product: GeForce GTS 360M
Operating System: Your OS (I used Windows 7 64-bit)
Language: Your Language (I used US)
    3. Download the driver. At the time of writing this, the current version was 260.89, the filename of the download was 260.89notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
    4. Start the installation and made sure to check the "clean install" option. The installation should go through without any trouble.
    Thanks!

  • My cursor freezes about once or twice a day.

When the cursor freezes, the caps lock key lights up green. When I am working on a document this is a huge problem, as I often lose content.  Also, the keyboard has started to do strange things like repeating a key many times or deleting whole lines if i press delete.  Any one with similar problem? Any advice much appreciated

    Hi Raymon
Maybe unselecting "ignore accidental trackpad input" (or something similar, my mac os is not english) in the keyboard-preferences helps. When you have that turned on, the cursor will not react while you are typing. Maybe your mouse is incompatible with that function or something.
    Bye

  • Macbook having multiple kernel panic after upgrade to Maverick OS

I have been having problems with my mid-2010 MacBook since upgrading to Mavericks. It will have several kernel panic episodes a day.  Originally I took it to the Apple Genius Bar and they recommended a complete reinstall of Mavericks. This did not stop the constant rebooting. I have found similar threads and I have included a copy of the latest kernel panic report (from just a few minutes ago) and a copy of a report form etrechek (a utility mentioned in another thread) If anyone has any idea what I'm looking for, I'd really appreciate the help.

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Does upgrading to Mavericks automatically create a guest user account?

I upgraded to Mavericks. When I turned on my mac the next day it had a guest user account. Any ideas as to why?

To answer the title of your post, no, the guest user already existed before you upgraded.  To add to what Barney said, see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14180

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hello,
After the upgrade to Mavericks my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after a couple of minutes of usage - after successful install and the use of some apps. Not bad enough the system is now always crashing if I try to boot. PM reset didn't help. Booting from the restore partition was possible, but I decided to go back to a working backup of 10.8.4 made a minute before I tried to upgrade. Why 10.8.4? Because 10.8.5 causes the strange problem that the Mac freezes after wake up from sleep.
    Any suggestions?
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Kind regards

I did a clean install of mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and still it freezes at arbitary points. The very first time when it booted up it worked for longer and when I started to apply updates from app store, it froze. Successive boots froze much early, like within few seconds of booting.
I am going to check this by booting in safe mode.  I am losing hope with mavericks on my MBP (mid 2007) and will switch back to snow leopard (10.6.8) which was working seemless.
I checked so many things, based on other posts to make sure if my MBP is really Mid 2007. IT IS.
    Rgds,
    Raj.

  • I am having problems with my Mac Book Pro Retina locking up after updating from Lion to Maverick.  I was having no trouble until I did the upgrade, and now it is locking up, freezing after about 5 minutes, and getting hot.  Any suggestions?

A while back I had an upgrade available to me.  I had Lion when I bought this Pro.  The upgrade is Maverick.  After downloading and installing the upgrade, my computer started freezing while doing anything.  I might not get this completely written before it freezes.  The keyboard is getting hot, and I have to use the power button to turn it off.  After it has sat for at least 10 minutes, I can turn it back on.  I might be able to do some work for 5 minutes, or up to 30 minutes before it freezes again.  Some of my programs are not working, either.
I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have, or even go back to Lion, if I can figure out how to.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • MBA screen randomly freezes, locks up after upgrade to Mavericks

Sometimes my MacBookAir5,2 freezes, not allowing any input from the keyboard and trackpad (I don't use/have a mouse) except for the power key to force quit it. It happens AFAICT randomly, maybe while I'm browsing. In this case there're no crash reports or related messages in Console.app by the time it locks up.
Other times it freezes and WindowServer crashes and I'm logged out. For that you can check the reports below.
I don't know if both problems are related. This all started when I moved to effing Mavericks from Mountain Lion (which was pretty solid and I'd probably return to).
I reset the SMC a couple of times to no avail. Any hints as to what could be causing it or how can I further troubleshoot this problem?

I agree with Bob, run EtreCheck and post the results here.
A couple of questions. You mentioned resetting the SMC, have you tried zapping the PRAM? If not, you can do this by:
Shutting your Mac all the way down.
Restarting your Mac and immediately pressing the Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously.  Make sure you press the keys before the gray screen comes up.
Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup sound.
Let go of the keys so your Mac reboots as per usual.
Also, how long after upgrading to Mavericks did this problem start?

  • After upgrade to OSX Mavericks my 2009 MBP keeps crashing due to kernel panic

After upgrade to OSX Mavericks my 2009 MBP keeps crashing due to kernel panic (happens every 20 minutes or so). Please help me with this, it's getting very frustrating. Have tried disk utility, there were errors (file system was corrupted), the disk utility managed to repair the disk but the crashes continue.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I deleted some of the old stuff that showed up on the report (have removed virtual box long ago but some residual files were apparently left). It didn't help though. Will remove forticlient too as a test.
Meanwhile here's the new etre-check and crash report:
