Upgrading to Mavericks from 10.6.8 with boot camp partition already for Windows 7

Hello,
I have a 2011 27" iMac/16GB ram/1TB HD on OS X 10.6.8
I did upgrade it to 10.7 but it changed too much stuff I did not like, so it was a nightmare to get back to 10.6.8
Anyway, I have a partition on there with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit that when I need to I boot into that partition.
I use a program called reFIT when my machine first turns on to select with one, works well as it is a EFI partition tool but no longer developed.
So regardless of the reFIT program if I upgrade to Mavericks will it screw up my Windows partition?
I have the Windows 7 disc/image so it's not a big thing but I don't want to spend days trying to make something work if it screws up what WORKS now.
You know the old saying, if it's not broke, don't fix it.......
any input would be appreciated

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows. I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto. I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system. My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too. If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

Help with boot camp partition on leopard!

So I wanted to increase my partition disc size, because I ran out of space. So I restored it and started the whole process over again, using like 75 out of the 102 gigs of free space. This time, something went wrong. I window came up and said:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use the disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended(journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
All I want to do is repartition it... I need help plz, thanks. Oh and I assumed the big files were obstacles so I deleted some 1-6 gig stuff I used to use not anymore(not any system stuff either) but that didn't work. Help!

I bought a new MacBook today with Leopard. I tried to install Windows XP (with service pack 2). I chose 32GB for windows. When I clicked start installation the screen went white, the windows CD was ejected and nothing else happened.
I had to switch it off manually and then I tried to restart the MacBook. The screen was just black.
I just read this:

I couldn't reboot it into the Mac OS X so I went back to PC World and created merry ****.
They blamed me and I blamed them and said there was a formatting problem. I left the MacBook with them and they said they would try and install windows XP for me. I collect it today.
What do I do if they can't get windows on there as I don't really understand what I read above so will need something a bit clearer....step-by-step.
Can anyone help me please?

Archive and Install with boot camp partition

I really messed up the Mac OS X partition of my MacBook, so now there is no menubar or icons, the menubar only appears when i launch a program from the dock, and i read on another website to archive and install. My question is, is it ok to do an archive and install if i have a boot camp partiton? is that going to mess up the boot camp partition or just mess up my computer in general? Thanks in advance for any help!

You may be right that it is not Leopard at all but some application creating these folders. I have no idea what application(s) I was using at 10:09 pm on March 31, 2009. I am curious about Office 2008 for Mac since the folders look like Windows XP folders. By the way, one of the three folders was My Videos and not My Documents as I previously stated.

Salvation from total screw up with Boot Camp???

I tried to use Boot Camp to partition my hard drive to load on XP. I did the COMPLETELY WRONG thing and I deleted the "extra" partitions that showed up. Is there any way I can save my OS X boot up disk at this point or is it all lost?
I'm using Leopard btw.

You will need to repartition the drive unfortunately:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

10.4.5 downgrade from 10.4.6 with Boot Camp

after the 10.4.7 installation disaster i will try to reinstall 10.4.5, but i don't want to lose my data, what can i do?

You can reinstall without erasing the drive by doing an Archive and Install. Be sure to repair the hard drive first, and do not do the Archive and Install unless the hard drive is without errors accoring to Disk Utility. You will need adequate space to install a fresh copy of OS X. Your old system will be archived at the root directory in a folder named Previous System Folder.

Time Capsule with boot camp partitions...

I've been reading about the Time Capsule on here a little bit now and it sounds great, it sounds like the perfect solution for me. However, i'm unsure on one thing. I would like to be able to backup the bootcamp partitions on all of my macs to the Time Capsule as well, now i understand that this may not be possible and if it isn't what would be the best way for me to back these bootcamp partitions up?

I have a 32Gb bootcamp partition mounted on my desktop but it appears in the 'exclude' list and I can't seem to remove it.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can explain how it can be done, if at all.

How do I create a Boot Camp partition with Windows & blank NTFS partitions?

I'm trying to create this kind of setup:
OS X partition
Windows 7 partition
blank NTFS partition (no OS)
blank NTFS partition (no OS)
This would be much easier if I created just the OS X partition and the Windows 7 partition with the Boot Camp Assistant tool (done this many times before successfully on other computers). The problem begins when I try to split the Boot Camp partition through the Windows 7 DVD partition manager during setup by deleting the Boot Camp partition, and recreating three partitions from the unallocated space. After installing Windows 7 on one of those new three partitions, I'm getting all kinds of startup errors when I try to install the Boot Camp drivers.
What would the best way to achieve this setup?

Yes, I researched many options for three partition dual boot set ups. After many trials and tribulations, there is a simple method that I have used on multiple MBPs.
1. Run Boot Camp Assistant, as per the Boot Camp Installation and Setup Guide. Once you have Mac OS X and Windows 7 set up, check the partitions and back them up (with Time Machine, and Winclone).
2. Get iPartition, and resize the Mac and Windows partitions to what you want, say 100GB each, and set up your other partitions to the size you want. I put mine "after" the Windows partition, at the end of the disk, and have had no problems. It takes a few minutes to create the bootable CD for iPartition, but you get everything you need to do so from Coriolis Systems. You will need your Mac OS X installl disc.
3. Install Paragon's HFS+ for Windows and NTFS for Mac, and everybody can read and write everything.
4. I have both Time Machine and Norton 360 back up the Data partitions, just in case -- to an external drive, of course.
You can boot to either OS and access any partition.

Does anyone know what will happen to my boot camp partition once I upgrade to lion?

I have MacBook Pro (4,1) running leopard 10.6.8 and am hesitant about the upgrade to lion because I have a FAT boot camp partition with window xp in it and a number of apps that I wouldn't like to lose in the process. Does anybody know how the upgrade handles the boot camp partition?

While this is the way it is supposed to work, because the Lion upgrade does try to create a new Recovery HD partition on the system disk, there is a chance that the BootCamp partition can be corrupted. Unfortunately Apple does not provide a tool or instructions on how to backup the BootCamp partition. I have had good results with WinClone even though the program seems to be no longer supported. I have just restored my XP BootCamp partition after my live partition was apparently corrupted by my Lion install. My recommendation to anyone running a BootCamp partition would be to back it up prior to any upgrade attempt.

Hey -- was told then on the MS web site that this path would work...
Use iCloud to sync my Apple stuff with my Windows stuff (Calendar, Contacts)
I currently do this successfully via MobileMe and Outlook Exchange
However, iCloud requires that syncing with Windows requires Vista or newer (so gotta go to Windows 7, 'cuz ain't going Vista)
Migrate all my Windows applications and files without having to do clean installs
I know, clean installs are always better
However, IT support at work is always overloaded, so I choose this route for now
Also, I regularly use Super Duper to back-up (clone) my internal HD -- and have restored a number of times, always successfully -- so that necessary step is well covered.
Any recommendations?

Problems installing Windows with Boot Camp

i am having this strange issue with boot camp. i have my windows 7 install dvd and go through all the standard boot camp procedure's, but once its finished partitioning the disk and restarts it just opens up to the apple logo on a grey screen, no spining logo, no status bar, nothing! ive left it for 6 hours on this screen 2-3 times now and nothing is happening. when i turn off and on again it just goes to a black screen telling me to install a bootable device and press any key. BUT THE INSTAL DISC IS IN!!! its driving me insane!
windows was burned to a dvd using disc aid and the .iso copied over fine and was verified and everything. the machine im trying to get this to run on is a 15 mbp 2.66 i7. the optical drive has been replaced with a 120gb ssd and there is a 1tb internal sitting in the hdd bay. i dont know if that has any relavance to this issue? i boot osx 10.7 (mountain lion) off the ssd and am trying to boot camp my hdd, but that couldent cause issues could it?
ive had a look around the other disscussions and fourums for 4 days now and i think i have seen nearly every bootcamp related youtube video there is! AND IT STILL DOSENT WORK!
if any one has ANY idea or sugesstion on how i can rectify this issue it would be greatly appriceated.

"You can't do both boot drive and storage drive on the same drive.
A boot drive requires (all data off first) it to be formatted GUID and OSX Extended Journaled, then OS X installed, then option key at boot to select that HD OS X boot drive, then BootCamp proceedure ran and install into the partition it creates on the HD."
THANKS AGAIN, i think im getting closer to a solution, i really dident think that simple old bootcamp could become so complicated!.
so i couldent (boot off the ssd as normal) and then create a seperate partition on the hdd of about 30gb, install osx on it, boot from that (with the optical bay back inside), create a thrid partition on the hdd via bootcamp then instal windows?
its just that erasing and reformating the hdd sounds a bit scary, its taken months of getting the permissions and fixing rouge ubd processes all right so everything works perfectly and seamlessly together with the ssd+hdd combo
"You can replace the data back into OS X on the HD and use that as extra storage, but your main use OS X user(s) needs to remain on the boot SSD.
To do this you need to use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the OS X boot partition of the SSD to the blank/empty of data HD, this will copy all the Users accounts accuratly so you can access them from the SSD.
As you can see here, I can access the same user folders of my cloned partition from the original partition, no "-" minus signs on the folders as I'm the exact same user.
I am currently booted into Macintosh HD and accessing my same named user folder on the clone on Macintosh HD 2.
So basically OS X on HD will become your new "Storage Drive"
this is pretty much exactly how im set up at the moment! with the user account and applications on the SSD and libarys like iphoto, itunes etc are on the HDD and i symlinked some others like the downloads off to the hdd aswell.

VMware Fusion vs. Parallels (with Boot Camp) -- help please!

Hello. I have just reinstalled Mac OS X (Leopard) on my MacBook and am looking to install Windows XP SP2. I will be installing a Boot Camp partition -- I know that much -- but I also want to use Parallels or Fusions so that I have the option of running the Boot Camp partition within OS X. Somehow, over my years as a Mac user, I have acquired both of these applications (Fusion and Parallels), and I was wondering if anyone has any information on the differences between the two. Two questions:
1.) As I just mentioned, I'm just looking for any information on the differences between the two apps -- what features one offers that the the other doesn't -- why I might want to choose one over the other -- and so forth.
2.) Since I have both apps, would it be possible to have both installed at the same time? In other words, could I have both Fusion and Parallels installed on my computer, and then, when it comes time to open Windows, choose which app I want to open and use? (not sure there'd be any point to this, but just in theory, could it be done?)

Although I've never used Fusion before, I've installed Parallels with Boot Camp partition three or four times before on this computer, and it has always worked great for me, so I know I want to use Boot Camp. And as far as the application goes, sounds like I'll be using Parallels, mainly because it's what I'm used to. That Wikipedia link was exactly what I was looking for -- I had checked Wikipedia before I posted the topic here, but I didn't find that comparison page. Anyways, they look about the same (Parallels and Fusion, that is) for anything I'd be concerned with, but where there were any differences, they seemed to work in favor of Parallels (except for Linux-related features, in which Fusion seemed to have the upper hand, but I don't use Linux). Recently upgraded to Mavericks... was working with Pages documents from previous OS ... Pages is now frozen and I don't dare force quit and loose my old documents.

I also had this problem after I installed Mavericks: Pages files freezing at close, need to force quit.
Workaround: when saving any document created with an earlier version of Pages, be sure to untick the "include preview in document".
For some reason, this resolves the problem.
BTW "loose" is not a verb. You probably mean "lose".
