Upgrading to New iMac 2.4 ghz from iMac 1.8 ghz G5 - Logic 8 upgrade

Hello all,
Got a question and have not searched the forms yet for the answer but thought I would ask for a quick response....
I'm upgrading my iMac from 1.8 G5 to one of the New iMac 2.4 ghz. Will be buying this week. I had Logic 7 running on the old G5 and then bought the Logic upgrade to Studio 8.0. My question is:
When I get the New iMac do I have to install logic 7 and then install the Logic 8 upgrade?? Or can I just install the upgrade pack? Does the upgrade have to sit on top of Logic 7 in the new machine?
Thanks
James

All you need to install the upgrade to 8 from 7 is your LP7 XSKey, which you have to plug in during the installation.

Updating your Mac's OS X version won't have affected how the Mail app (I assume that it's the Mail app that you are using, not Safari) shows on your iPad. If you don't have the menu bar showing in the Mail app then try closing the Mail app via the iPad's multitasking bar and see if it shows when you re-open it : iOS: Force an app to close
If that doesn't fix it then you could try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Can i upgrade to a dual 1.25 ghz from a single 1 ghz?

hi i have a MDD G4 single 1ghz processor fw 800 mac that i was considering selling because it cant boot to os9 but now im considering keeping it because of its upgrade potential.
what upgrades are available to me?
    thanks

Since that board was available in SP 1 GHz, DP 1.25 GHz and DP 1.42 GHz, the short answer is yes. Many here suggest just going up to the DP 1.25 GHz for the most cost-effective upgrade. The difference between the DP 1.25 and DP 1.42 is minimal - 10-13%. From posts I have seen, going from a SP 1.25 to a DP 1.25 will result in about a 40% boost so your difference should be even a little greater. Check the ebay link below for DP listings. That's where I bought mine.

  • Upgrade to New Feb.'11 MBP from mid2010 MBP?

    Hi,
So I purchased my MBP on Jan. 7, 2011 in the apple store, and had heard hearsay of a new model coming out soon but honestly my previous computer (a dell latitude d610-5.5 yrs old) was on its last legs and I couldn't wait much longer. I'm so disappointed that of course they come out w/the new ones w/i Intel processor RIGHT after I buy it. Is there anything I can do, like trade it in or pay a small fee (say, about $200) to upgrade?

If you are past your 14 day return period with apple then unfortunately no there is nothing that can be done. However you could sell the computer you have now either on CL, eBay, etc use the funds you get from your old computer to purchase a new one. What are you using the computer for anyways? Everyday task such as internet, email, browsing, music, etc is fine for the Intel core 2 duo. If your using heavy Photoshop, Movie editing, etc then you should consider an upgrade. I would not sweat it man. I know how that feels though, it's happen to me several times.

  • Upgrade to new iOS 5.1.1 (from 4.3.5)

MY wifes iphone was linked to a computer she no longer has. And it is acting up.
I can not (even when logged into her account) copy purchased apps from the iphone to the computer (to prepare a backup for the upgrade). Also, what happens to all the stored mail in & out boxes when I upgrade an iphone to iOS 5.1.1? She uses 4 email accounts. I can not for some reason ´check the "sync e-mail accounts" to create a backup of all of them. When starting to initiate the upgrade it warns that ONLY contacts calendars & text message are preserved but what happens to her complex emails settings and contents??

It is strange. I created a user profile for her on the computer (mac book Pro). Then in iTunes I am logged into her apple-ID account. I have authorised this computer. And actually now I can see the purchases in the itunes store she made meaning I can reload the apps later. (I will not check the "syns apps" because it tells me everthing on the iphone will be replaced with the empty itunes library from the computer) But I can not check the box that says "sync email accounts" (or whatever in english - I use swedish) in order to keep the structure and contents of her emails accounts...

  • Second iMac (G4) interrupts Airtunes from iMac G5

I recently added an iMac G4 (800MHz/256Mb/Airport Card/10.4.6) to my existing Airport network (AEBS and iMacG5 1.8MHz/2GB Ram w/Airport Extreme Card/10.4.6) and now my Airtunes streams from the G5 to my stereo (Airport Express) frequently drop out. I'm using WEP. At this point the only way I can stop the dropping is to turn off all the programs on the G4 and in some cases the airport too. Not good. I've not yet tried changing to WPA. Anyway, all worked perfectly before I added the second iMac computer. Periodically I use an iBook G4 1.2GHz/Airpoort Extreme on the network with the G5 and never have had these problems. Why is the iMac G4 messing with my mojo?

I changed my AEBS channel to "Automatic" from channel 3 and it has helped with airtunes streams of iTunes music on the hard drive, although I did have issues withdrop outs while streaming iTunes Radio.
Could it have been as simple as that?
    I shall advise.

  • Upgraded to new iOS 8.0.2

Upgraded to new iOS & iPad keeps freezing, several minutes at a time. Before upgrade I never had even 1 issue with the iPad. Need some solutions for this very irritating & time consuming problem.

    Try some basic troubleshooting:
    (A) Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    (B) Try reset all settings
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
    (C) Setup as new (data will be lost if you do not have backup)
    Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings

My 2007 iMac is 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I must upgrade from OS10.5.8 to at least 10.7.  I know I must go to 10.6.8 on the way. Two questions: 1. As a bright but ignorant person, what problems will I encounter in upgrading? 2. Should I go to 10.7 or all the way to Mavericks?

Thanks for your reply--makes me not want to get involved with Mavericks, and I appreciate the heads-up.  What I hadn't thought about is that by upgrading my OS I would also have to upgrade from my Adobe CS1.  Since I'm retired from my art career, I'm reluctant to spend the dough on new CS; but I still like using PhotoShop and InDesign (and obviously don't care that they are outmoded).  But I'll bet any newer Mac OS won't run my old software.

  • Cost/benefit of RAM upgrade for iMac G5 2 GHz from 1.5 to 2.0 GB

Equipment: iMac 20" 2.0 GHz, 250 GB HD, originally 500 MB RAM upgraded to 1.5 GB: (1) 500 MB and (1) 1 GB DDR SDRAM, PC3200U-30330.
Not understanding the subtleties of memory upgrades, I bought this off the shelf with 500 MB RAM. When the processor board was replaced, I added a 1 GB RAM and can't say I noticed any change in performance. It does reduce the need for page outs.
After this, I read something about needing to have the DIMMs matched for there to be a performance gain. Or maybe this related to 64 bit operation? I read elsewhere in the Discussions that 64 bit operation would actually consume more memory and reduce performance.
If I upgraded to 2.0 GB, would there be any improvement in performance? In general or only in certain situations?
If I upgrade RAM, I'll have (2) useless 500 MB DIMMs. Is there any value in these? Where is the best place to sell them or do they have value as trade-ins?
Or is the best use of the money to put towards an Intel Mac that can support 10.6+ ?(...or a share or two of Apple stock.)
    Please convey your wisdom. Thanks.
P.S. I know the stock is the best use of my money, so just consider the hardware options.

I happened to find this answer while looking for something else.
iMac G5 and iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor): Benefit of using matching memory modules (RAM) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2708
    Condensed version:
Applies only to original iMac G5 and iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor).
*If it has matching DIMMS it operates with a 128-bit data path, otherwise it uses a 64-bit data path.* A 128-bit data path allows greater throughput than a 64-bit data path. This allows faster manipulation of large files. With a 128-bit bus, you would see better performance when you have multiple applications open at the same time. Also, some enhanced gaming performance.
According to this, I was getting better performance before I added the 1 GB of RAM, except that degraded performance due to stuffing RAM to the gills has to be weighed against that. Seems like trading up to a full 2 GB would have some unquantified benefits. The only ways to find out are to find another iMac to compare with or to put in the RAM and see what happens.

  • I recently bought two iMac quad core i5 processor speed 2.5 Ghz. Every time I use Air Drop and I send a file from one iMac to the other, a black curtain drops and I am asked to restart the computer!!! What can I do?

I recently bought two iMac quad core i5 processor speed 2.5 Ghz. Every time I use Air Drop and I send a file from one iMac to the other, a black curtain drops and I am asked to restart the computer!!! What can I do?

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

  • Upgrading iMac: Won't boot from 9.1 or 9.2 CD

I am upgrading a 350Mhz slot loading iMac. I put in a newer 500mhz mother board, a 60 gig drive, and 512 mb dimm. I have done this type of upgrade with other identical iMacs, except that the mother board was a 400mhz. In any event, there is no software on the internal hard drive, so I tried to boot from the 9.1 CD I have. The computer will chime and bring up the flashing question mark folder. I then tried just going ahead and loading OS 10.2. The iMac will boot from the CD with the C key held down with this disk, and it will get all the way to the startup of the installer. I have been able to use disk utility from here to format the hard drive. It shows up and formats O.K. Then, when I start the install sequence, I get all the way to the actual install, but while the software is checking the package contents, the computer either just stalls (mouse stops moving), or I get a kernel panic. I am presuming the problem is it doesn't have the 4.19 firmware installed. But if I can't get it to boot from the 9.1 disk, how can I install anything, much less the firmware.
By the way, I have replaced the PRAM battery, and I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Any ideas?

Don't those old imacs have a problem reading drives larger than 8GBs?
I believe that you are referring to the fact that some early Macs had to have large hard drives partitioned such that the first partition was less than 8 GB.
This is not applicable to the iMac 350 MHz or faster iMac (the slot loaders).
It is applicable to the tray loading iMacs (333 MHz and slower).

  • My imac hangs up after upgrading to new os

After upgrading to new OS my imac hangs up where it never has done this before. My apple care has long sinse expired and I am really bummed. It was clearly related to the new OS. Any suggestions for relief?

    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

  • I bought a license for Lr a few years back and installed it on a mac laptop.  I want to move that license to my new iMac and remove it from my old laptop. How?  Thanks!!!

I bought a license for Lr a few years back and installed it on a mac laptop.  I want to move that license to my new iMac and remove it from my old laptop. How?
I downloaded Lr on the new iMac but there does not seem to be a way of "registering" the software to give it functionality.
    Thanks!!!

    Your Lightroom License key is,
    1. Cross platform Mac and or Win.
    2. It is a single user / owner.
    3. You can have two installations active with one in use at any point in time.
    4. There is no deactivate process like other Photoshop products.
    5. You can uninstall / install as many times as you need as long as you keep the spirit of the license.
    6. The license key is specific to the Lightroom version, i.e License key for LR 4 will not work for LR 5.
    7. You can upgrade i.e. purchase from any version of Lightroom 1,2,3,4 to the latest LR 5.

  • Upgrade from iMac to Mac Pro - RAID5 options?

I am currently using a 27" iMac 2.66 Ghz Core i5 for my main processing needs (RAW image file editing in Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop plus HDSLR footage editing in Final Cut) and am feeling constrained by my storage options (I don't like external enclosures but want a separate boot/apps drive from my media drive) so my only logical upgrade path is a Mac Pro.
My ideal solution would be to have a lightning fast boot/apps drive (SSD seems obvious choice) and then a RAID5 array of 3 large (2TB) drives to give me at least 4GB of media storage.
The problem is that when I go to spec a Mac Pro with a hardware RAID card (because I understand that software RAID under Disk Utility can only offer RAID0 or RAID1), I am told by the web configuration tool: "Solid-state drives are not compatible with the Mac Pro RAID Card in either RAID or Enhanced JBOD mode."
What I would like to know is whether this is an absolute technical limitation or is it just something that Apple does not officially support? This would be my main production machine so I don't want to implement any hacks.
P.S. reason for my current dislike of enclosures is the extra cables/space/noise/heat they generate and also the current debate over interfaces (would like to use eSATA or USB3 to get fastest transfer speeds).
Thanks in advance for any replies!

    3 drives to me = RAID3
Apple Pro RAID card: find a good external - threads discussing options - look at AMUG reviews and elsewhere. CalDigit or something. Maybe RAID6 capability.
I would use internal drives in software RAID0.
And the only interface for external, SATA only cases, none of these consumer cases for multi interface, though OWC has a popular RAID5 4 drive setup you might like.
Use OWC SSD or two for system, and 3 x 2TB WD Black RAID0. No trouble with that. Just lots and lots of clones and backups is all.
