I'm planning to upgrade our Oracle8i 8.1.6 to 8.1.7
production database server. But, I have a Standby
Database server configured which is being updated
using the archived redo logs updates on a regular
basis to a remote area.
Will the standby database server continue function
(accept archived redo logs) after upgrading both
servers? It would entail an lot of work to reacreate
the standby DB.
Anybody has similar setup or experieince?

Which upgrade documentation are You following?
If You have metalink access, then read note 316889.1 - it has step by step instruction how to upgrade from 8.1.7.4 to 10.2.0.1 (and I would suggest to upgrade to 10.2.0.4).

Upgrade Database from Oracle 8.1.7.4 to Oracle10gRel2

I am upgrading from Oracle8.1.7.4 --> Oracle10g Rel2
when i executed @catupgrd.sql in last steps
execute dbms_registry.gather_stats(null);
it is running from last 12 hours.
How do i check its running or hang?
i am not able to login through other terminal
any idea or suggestion

How to upgrade net8 to oracle9i net services?

Hi guys,
I really need your help. I'm upgrading my oracle8i database to 9i manually.
I followed all necessary steps from the following link http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10500_01/server.920/a96530/upgrade.htm#787330
On step 19 ,When It's time to restart the instance the following ora error is returned
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
I dont know how I can update listener&tnsnames to recognise the upgraded database.
Would you please guide how to solve this problem?

This error means that for the tnsentry:
(SID_DESC =
(GLOBAL_DBNAME = oradb02)
(ORACLE_HOME = D:\Oracle8i_base\Product)
(SID_NAME = oradb02)
You don' have this SID registered at the listener. Most probably, since you don't have it tailored already to your environment, the listener could be registering the instances in self-registration mode.
Please post the output from the command:
lsnrctl services
Then find out the line named Service "<yourServiceName>" this service name should be used instead of the SID declaration at your tnsnames.ora file, so the entry will look like this:

(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = yourHostname)(PORT = 1521))

Where is the installation guide for Oracle8.1.7.4

We are about to upgrade from Oracle8.1.7.3 to Oracle8.1.7.4. I believe that there is a step by step guide, but I am not finding it now. Can anyone direct me to it?

To upgrade from Oracle8.1.7.3 to Oracle8.1.7.4 is applied through a patch and each patch has the steps to apply it.

Cannot view BLOB datatypes in Oracle10g

After a successful upgrade from Oracle8i to Oracle10g, I cannot view tables with BLOB datatypes. I'm getting the following error in SQL*PLUS upon quering the table:
SP2-0678: Column or attribute type can not be displayed by SQL*Plus
When i try to do the same thing from TOAD, I'm getting this error instead:
A Query with LOB's requires OC18 mode, but OC17 mode is used.
I have also tried to create a new table with BLOB datatype (since i thought the culprit was a broken migrated data) but I got the same error. What am I missing here????

you never could view blobs via sqlplus
you only could use utl_raw.cast_to_varchar2 if there ist text inside your blobs.

Problem with compatibility(database-BIBeans)

hello erybody, I have installed a jdeveloper and bibeans (both have version 9.0.4) an Oracle8i database
when I have to create new graph BIBeans,I have to connect on the database so it show me an error that his version is incompatible with BIBeans9.0.4,so sould I install Oracle 9i database or????(is there an upgrad for Oracle8i to 9i?)

BI Beans is not certified against 8i database from an OLAP data source perspective. This is because the OLAP component was introduced in 9iR2. However, the graph bean can be used with an 8i database by using and XML as the data source. There is an XML graph sample shipped with the latest BI10g samples.
There is also a lot of really good information on using the BI Beans graph with XML on the Reports OTN site.

To Rick Post about cross-tabulation, rollup, cube

One of the systems that I have access to has just been upgraded to Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.3.0 and SQL*Plus: Release 8.0.6.0.0. So, after doing many things the hard way for a long time, I am just beginning to experiment with some of the new features that I have been reading about, like cross-tabulation with rollup and cube in the group by clause.
In the four posts listed below, where I provided solutions using decode, you have said that the desired cross-tabular result could be achieved using rollup and cube in the group by clause, but you have not provided any sample code. I have read the documentation, but am still unable to figure out how to achieve the same results. I am not receiving any error messages; I am just not figuring out how to achieve the same results. Would you please do me the favor of providing the code using rollup and cube that will produce the same results as the code I have offered, for any of the posts below?

out differences between 8, 8i, 8i lite and 8 enterprise edition.

The best paper I've seen that describes the differences between
the various 8i family sets is "Oracle8i: A Family of Database
Products".

BTW - If you are going to upgrade from 7.3.4 anyway, your best
bet is to go with 8i, otherwise you will have to upgrade from
Oracle8 at some point anyway.

Connecting an Oracle 8i client to an Oracle 9 DB

Hey, my company just upgraded an Oracle8i instance to an Oracle9 installation. At first I was given link errors pertaining to an oci9 issue. I resolved that by patching my JDBC driver(classes12.zip).
Now I am told:
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: get_env_handle
at oracle.jdbc.oci8.OCIEnv.getEnvHandle(OCIEnv.java:70)
at oracle.jdbc.oci8.OCIDBAccess.logon(OCIDBAccess.java:359)
at oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleConnection.<init>(OracleConnection.java:252)
When I attempt to execute my java code. I patched classes12_g.zip with no change in behavior. Any suggestions?

I am having much the same prolem. Am working with ColdFusion and IIS on an NT Server (that is the Oracle client) and an Oracle 8.1.7 database on a database server (Oracle server). Communication between these two machines worked fine with Oracle 7.3 client software loaded on the client machine and Oracle 8.1.7 on the server. Now I need to use the Oracle 8.1.7 client with Net8 and I can't get anything to verify. Here's what I've done.
I installed the Oracle 8.1.7 Client on the NT Server. I copied the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files over from the other client that is running on 7.3 client drivers. I would think that everything should work properly this way since 8.1.7 is supposed to be reverse compatible. What have I not done or done wrong?
I am aware that for Oracle 8i clients you can get away without using the SID in the tnsnames.ora file of the client. Is is a requirement that it is not used or can it still be used? If I choose not to use the SID where else must I change configuration files? any on the server?
I am kind of stuck so any light on the situation would be a big help. Thanks.

You would have to upgrade to Oracle8i 8.1.7 and then to 10G.

Loading of Oracle IFS

I am trying to install Oracle IFS 1.0.8 on Oracle8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5. (on winnt server) and could not install properly.I faced following problems.
1. I could not configure ifs with oracle database.
2.I could not start IFS after loading.
When I run the file ifsstart.bat, the error I got is 'invalid WinNt Application'
Can I install Oracle IFS 1.0.8 on Oracle8i Enterprise Edition 8.1.5 ?. Because in Oracle IFS installation guide, it is given the oracle enterprise edition 8.1.6 ihas to installed first.

I have seen your question on this board before and they have suggested that you do a clean install of Oracle8i Release2 (8.1.6). IFS supposely was release with this release of Oracle (8.1.6). So maybe if you download 8.1.6 and do a clean install and then Ifs it would work.
I am currently running 8.1.6 with Ifs on NT.

Forms 4.5 and oracle 8 compatibilty

We are still working with oracle7.3.4 and forms 3. Now we are upgading to forms 4.5 and in the future we will upgrade to oracle8. I would like to know whitch vertions are compatble (oracle and developer)

I am not sure if the bug will fix all your problems Forms4.5 versus Oracle 8.
There is a problem with new structure of rowid in ORACLE8, comparing to ORACLE 7.x. The problem appears while locking the rows in FORMS4.5.
The best (and maybe the only) way is to start using Forms5 (and higher ) against ORACLE 8.

OCP certification delivery

Guys,
I have passed my OCP one month before and still I didn't get my OCP certificate. I have maild to fulfilment complaining about this, thrice, but, no reply from them, just a default mail that we will respond you in two business days. I think they dont have time to see these mails. I know all my friends get within 2 week of time, but, to my luck, still waiting and I dont know when it would comes to an end...............

Oracle 8.1.5 to oracle8.1.6 upgradation

I am working paralelly on both Solaris2.7 and win NT4.0
The details are as follows
1. Liscenced versions of Oracle8.1.5 have been installed on both the systems
In order to upgrade I tried searching for the script u0801050.sql in both the systems under ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin, but it was not available
I solved this as follows on Win NT:
1. Installed oracle8.1.6 on NT in the same HOME .
2. The script was present in after this re-install.
3. I used the script(Should I have done this?)
But there is a problem with Java Upgradation now.
I started the database in the RESTRICT mode
And here is the output from the Log file
