Upgrading to OS 10.4 (on CD iMac) from DVD Software-Phase 2

Suppose I have a Firewire EZQuest DVD burner and want to upgrade an iMac G3 with a slot-loading CD-R/W drive from 10.3.9 to 10.4 via DVD. Will I be able to transfer the DVD info onto the iMac's HD and proceed from there? Or, could I expect to have the iMac restart off the DVD loaded into the DVD burner?
Thanx in advance for any feedback received.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I gather from the fact that you are posting here that you are unable to boot your iMac G3 from the EZQuest drive. If you haven't tried that, then that is the first thing to do. Insert the Tiger disk in the EZQuest drive and restart the iMac G3. Hold down the Option key after the chime and select the Tiger Install Disk from the choice of icons once they've all loaded.
If that doesn't work then the easiest thing to do here is to:
Insert the Tiger DVD in to another Mac.
Then connect the other Mac to the iMac G3 with a 6pin-to-6pin Firewire cable
Start the other Mac in Firewire Target Disk Mode (Hold down the T key during start-up).
Restart the iMac G3 and hold down the Option (aka alt) key. A purplish screen will appear with the iMac's hard drive, the other Mac's hard drive and the Tiger Install DVD listed.
Wait for it to finish searching for Network drives and then select the Tiger Disk.
Install Tiger as normal.
All you are doing here is borrowing the other Mac's optical drive. There is no need to swap hard drives in and out.

  • Upgrading to  OS 10.4 (on CD iMac) from DVD Software

A friend has an iMac, 500 MHz,256 MB RAM, 20GB HD with a CD slot drive. The slot drive rejects the OS 10.4 (Tiger) install DVD. Question 1: Is there an install work around? Question 2: Is OS 10.4 (Tiger) compatible with her iMac? Thanks for any response. Ken

Hi Casee! And Welcome To Discussions!
Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95. Download The Order Form.

I would like to upgrade the operating system on my 2009 iMac from OS X Version 10.5.8 to 10.9.5. Is it something I can do on my own since AppleCare expired and I am not able to go to an Apple retail store to speak to a Genius? Where can I get the V. 10.9.5 for free? Thanks.

I see. In this case, I will go to the capital city to buy the 10.6 DVD.

Install more RAM in the computer; the Mac needs to have at least 2GB of RAM and should have 4GB or more first.

  • Hard Disk Upgrade on my 27-inch Late 2009 iMac 11,1

    Hello Everyone,
I would like to upgrade the harddisk in my iMac from a Seagate 1TB model to a Seagate 2TB model.
I have read in the forums that for this particular model of the iMac, i have to ensure that i buy the same model of the hard disk as what came in my machine originally. So i have figured that part out. I am thinking of getting a 2.0TB Seagate Barracuda XT.
Am i expected to run into any problems post upgrade?
I read somewhere that Apple has done some firmware upgrade which pretty much limits user options for disk upgrades. Result being, your FAN goes mad and runs at rull speed and etc etc..
Any and every feedback is useful.
    Thank you.
    Regards,

No problem. I am not happy with this situation. This is an easy swap minus the Fan issues and I don't want to mess with the software solution.
I did call Mac Sales and their ACT was to order Part Number 922-8827 and attach it to the outside of the HDD and plug that into the logic board. This was said to be the most consistent method to getting a successful HDD swap without fan issues.
I am looking for that part. I will keep everyone up to date.
Btw, my iMac is the 11,3 2.93 GHz i7 27" (Mid-2010). It shipped with a Seagate HDD 7200.12.

  • I want to upgrade my Imac from tiger 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. What is the best way to do this.

I have just purchased an iphone 4 and it needs me to have the latest itunes on my computer.  I have not upgraded by computer for some time and thought this is probably the time to do it. My computer is an imac intel with Tiger 10.4.11. I want to upgrade my Imac from tiger 10.4.11 to Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or higher.  What is the best way to do this?  Appreciate any help as I am out of practice. I used to be an old hand at this, but things have moved on since I didn't upgrade or use my computer as much!

The best way, really the only way, is to purchase Snow Leopard.
    Online (UK): http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Elsewhere: call the phone number in the Apple Online Store.
    Apple's price is $19.99, £14.00, €18.
Snow Leopard is not available to download from any legitimate source.
Once you install Snow Leopard, upgrade iTunes to version 10.7 or the latest, iTunes 11.
iTunes 10.6.3 is the last version of iTunes to support Mac computers with Mac OS X 10.5.8 with either Intel or PowerPC processors, but since you have an Intel iMac, the best solution is to purchase Snow Leopard. Leopard is no longer available from Apple and prices from aftermarket vendors can be unreasonably high.

  • Is it a good idea to upgrade my imac from 10.6.8 snow leopard to osx maverics?

I am thinking of upgrading, any problems with this come up? thanks for help!

Do you have a realistic need to upgrade, for example, to run certain new software that requires it? If you do upgrade you will lose the ability to run all PPC software such as Office 2004, AppleWorks, and many others.
Older Macs like yours will usually run faster with Snow Leopard. And, upgrading will require you to add more RAM to your computer. 2 GBs is simply not sufficient. Otherwise, see the following:
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You won't lose any app by upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion, but you have to make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com If your applications aren't supported in Mountain Lion, delete them or update them before upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion.
After checking it, upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. OS X Mavericks will be launched in weeks and will include new features, so you may want to wait until the Mavericks release > http://www.apple.com/osx/preview

  • I am trying to Upgrade my iMac running 10.6 to the latest OSX Combo upgrade... however on restart my iMAC 'panics' - crashes?... i have seen some discussion on this but no resolution so far that works for me... any ideas?

    Hi all,
This is proving somewhat frustrating. End goal is to upgrade the iMAC to Lion. However, in order to use the downloaded version of Lion Install package, i have first to upgrade my iMAC from OSX 10.6 (i.e. I need at least 10,7 to get access to the APP store).
However, whenever I have tried to upgrade, then on restart the machine 'panics'.
At first I thought it was some form of malware and erased and repartioned the disk and then re-installed. However, this did not solve the problem.
Is there a problem with post 10.6 upgrades ?
best regards and thanks to anyone who might offer suggetsions to help.
    Buck.

    Hi Paul,
I am using Snow Leopard 10.6 (re-installing as we speak). on an iMac.
Have verified startup disk as well as verified permissions.
Have cleared the PRAM (using option-command-P-R keys and waiting for the chimes).
Only peripherals are an apple usb keyboard and an apple usb mouse connected via keyboard usb adapter.
    Machine runs fine at 10.6
problem only occurs when i try to reboot after installing the Combo upgrade.
p.s. i also have a MACBook Pro and have had no similar issues with that. So am guessing it is somethign related specifically to iMac hardware/firmware ?
    ciao, Buck.

I upgraded to iOS x mavericks on my iMac now i cannot access my iPhoto i get this messageThis update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. I have not changed anything thankyou for any info.

Please test after each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes. Keep in mind that no one here represents Apple or can help with customer-service issues.
    Step 1
A purchased app can only be updated by signing in to the App Store with the same Apple ID that was originally used to buy it. There's no way around that limitation, which also applies to free apps. If you can't sign in with the buyer's ID, delete the app and reinstall it. You'll have to pay for it again, if applicable.
    Step 2
If you get the alert when trying to update a bundled iLife app, elect the Purchases page in the App Store and locate the app in your purchase history. If there's a button marked ACCEPT on the right, click it.
If you have a used Mac, the bundled apps were linked to the original owner's Apple ID and can't be transferred to you. Reportedly, customer service has issued redemption codes to some second owners who asked, but it's not guaranteed.
    Step 3
If you're trying to update iLife or iWork apps that were installed from a purchased DVD, or if you have a refurbished Mac bought directly from Apple, contact App Store customer service for a redemption code. You may be asked for the part number of the DVD.
    Step 4
From the App Store menu bar, select
    Store ▹ View My Account
Enter your Apple ID password at the prompt. At the lower right corner of the window that opens, click the Reset button. Close the window.

You have entirely too little free space on the boot drive, for best performance it's best to have hard drives only 50% filled max and never more than 80% filled.
See Storage Drive here and reduce some space also make a seperate bootable clone backup of all your data BEFORE upgrading

    Why is my computer slow?
If you upgrade and it doesn't go right or slows the machine down you might need to erase and install, which all your programs will have to be reinstalled from original sources and files from backup.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If you can't do this, then hire a local PC/Mac specialist.
Do not upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 on that older machine, it will slow down and you will lose all your PPC based programs.
Leave the Lions for a brand new machine with a SSD drive.
