Upgrading to OSX Lion on macbook 5.1 aluminum unibody?

Hi,
Is it worth upgrading from OSX Leopard to OSX Lion on a macbook 5.1 aluminum unibody (early '09)?
I have heard that some have experienced problems with battery life and overheating.
My system is fairly healthy, though a little slow at times. Maybe I should just clean up diskspace and reinstall Leopard or even Snow Leopard?
Thanks.

only upgrade if you feel you would benefit from any of the features in Lion.

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • Cannot upgrade to OSx Lion no Recovery

I purchased and tried to install the OSx Lion upgrade. My mac is running Mac OSx 10.6.8 and I have bootcamp with Windows 7
It seems that there is some sort of problem in upgrading the OS when bootcamp is installed, but I am not sure of which would be the solution. The error says :
Mac OS X can't be installed on the disk Macintosh HD, because a recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more.
From an internet search I think that a possible solution would be to have an external hard drive and install OSx lion on it. However, the hard drive must be formatted and have at least 13 G free, so that I will have to purchase a new hard drive only for this task :-( . Before doing so, I'd ask to the community if anyone had experience with this issue and what is the solution. Any help will be greatly appreciate ^_^ Thanks!!!
As a side note I'd like to express my deep disappointment in my Mac, fueled by the frustration of being unable to do a simple task, such as upgrading the OS. This is really the last drop. I can honestly say that buying my macbook pro was a very big mistake :-(
Since I bought it, almost one year ago, I had only problems. The OS is slow and crashes very often. I lost countless hour of work due to crashes, and disk failures. Most of the software is either not compatible, or full of bugs, while I had to pay lots of money for any kind of upgrade/assistance. The upgrade to Osx lion is my latest desperate attempt to stabilize the OS. I can't honestly say that there is a single task which this mac can accomplish, beside browsing e-mails.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I will be happy to give more infos about my problem
For the triple boot: I am installing rEFIt. I dod not think that the problems with OSx Lion are related to this, as I took the decision to install Linux after failing to update the OSx
I would be glad if we can bring the topic back to ways to upgrade to OSx Lion while having bootcamp. Did anyone ever succeded in doing so? ^_^
    About the unstable OS:
I have about 3-4 fatal crashes per week. Sometimes the mac is unresponsive and I have to restart it manually, sometimes the screen goes black and the computer restarts itself.
From what I have noticed I'd say this happens either while I am using some application, or just by using an external hard driver.
About the application: I'd say I can divide the crashes based on percentage of occurrance as follows:
60% with Microsoft Power Point (I can't say if it's because of the program or just because I use it at least 70% of the time) 30% Programming( C++, Fortran or Matlab) 10% Latex (using TeX Shop). The crash is immediate and I am not saving or doing anything in particular. Just typing text.
About the external hard drivers: I had some serious crashes due just by plugging in removable hard drivers, or reading/writing on them. This accounts for about 50% of overall crashes. It is not the same hard drive: I had crashes with multiple sources and I think it's some serious issue with the OS. I take extra care in safely removing and ejecting before unplugging from any source. Probably an important comment: most of the flash drivers I have used are also used with Linux systems. I never had a problem in Linux or Windows.
    Thanks!!!!!

  • How can I upgrade to OSX Lion when I am running OSX 10.5.8?

I am currently running OSX 10.5.8 on my MacBook and have no idea how to upgrade to OSX Lion as I do not have Snow Leopard. Can anyone help? Thanks!

You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Or you can wait until August when Apple will sell Lion on a USB Flash Drive for $69

If you bought the MBP new 3 weeks ago, it should have come with Mountain Lion already installed. Did you update your MBP to the newly released 10.8.4 update? If not, what OS were you running before the upgrade, and what version of Mountain Lion do you have now?

  • Safari showing text as boxes with A in them after upgrade to OSX lion

    Hi,
After upgrading to OSX Lion and the new Safari that comes with it 6.0. It is showing a lot of the charachters on some websites as a box with a capital A in them. These are then pastered all over the site.
If i go to other browsers it is fine. Also when i copy and paste these A boxes it to the search bar it shows the correct text. But when viewing the page it is impossible to view the text and makes for an unpleasant browsing experience.
Any idea how to fix this issue? Is it a font issue? I have not changed any of my fonts and I would assume that the browser would be using a standard web font.
Any help on solving this riddle would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • I just upgraded to OSX LION and have a problem with "hidden" files

Okay first please take it easy with me, This is my first iMac and I've had it only 3 days, Everything was working fine until i upgraded to OSX LION, Now I have a problem "Hidden" files on an external hard drive which were visible before the upgrade seem to have vanished.
Does anyone know what's happened - Did the upgrade delete them somehow (The drive was not connected during the process) or does LION simply hide "Hidden" files, I certainly hope that's the case because there were quite a few files annd I would hate to have lost them permanently.
Obviously if they are just hidden i would appreciate anyone telling me if\how I can see them again.
THANK YOU in advance for your help.

First WOW what a quick response, are Mac users always this quick to help each other out - Never got such a rapid response in all my PC using years.
Second it is an NTFS drive, Other non-hidden files are still there and still accessible it's just the "hidden" ones that have vanished. As I said this is my first ever Mac so I can't figure out how to unhide them if that is at all possible and if that is in fact what has happened here.

Nope. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD for $29.00 through an Apple retailer or ordering from AppleCare:

  • If I upgrade to OSX Lion from 10.6.8, will I keep all of my current files, bonjour, email, apps, and everything? Forgive my n00b-ness of upgrading an OS on a mac.

If I upgrade to OSX Lion from 10.6.8, will I keep all of my current files, bonjour install, printers, iWeb sites, documents, email, apps, and everything? Forgive my n00b-ness of upgrading an OS on a mac.. this will be my first upgrade of OS.

You will keep the apps and printers, but they may or may not work.
Quicken for Mac is gone for example because it requires Rosetta to run. Lion does not support Rosetta which may lead to some older printer/scanner software to no longer function.
    Just a few of many.

  • Since upgrading to osx lion I can't log in to certain webpages.

Since upgrading to osx lion some online functions seem to have stopped working.
When I'm trying to log on to my university database I get the message that I cant log in due to "You can't log in because your browser settings doesn't support frames, tables, cookies, javascript". I know that my settings at least supports java and allows cookies. Keep in mind that this wasn't a problem before changing to lion, and best to my knowledge my settings seems to be the same as before.
Theres also an other website that doesn't allow me to log in, it just keeps going back to the log in window. This didn't happen before.
Also, perhaps unrelated. Some sites seems to be redirecting me to their mobile versions? Even though I'm using regular Wi-Fi and not as I'm sometimes doing, use my iphone bluetooth for internet access.
This isn't isolated to safari, using firefox or chrome doesn't help either.
Appreciate any help I can get.

I'm not receiving the error you mentioned. I don't know what the error in red says.
I entered a bogus ID/password and got the image below. I'm running Safari 5.1.1 from Lion 10.7.2.

  • Upgraded to OSX Lion 10.7.4 & optical drives are no longer recognized

    HELP!!
I have a MacPro 1,1 with a 2 x 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon and I just upgraded to OSX Lion 10.7.4. Upon upgrading my system stopped recognizing the two optical drives I had installed. Is there a patch or are there drivers that I can download to fix this? Has this happened to anyone else? I was prepared to lose access to some older software but not my optical drives!!!
When I do a "system report" through "About this mac" both of the drives are listed but they dont show up on my deskop. I have an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A and a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S202N

Nearly the same identical question on another thread yesterday.
First things to try doing are zap PRAM and / or Reset SMC.
That usually is all that is needed, and on your Mac there is a physical SMC button on the logicboard above PCI slot #4 and access you have to remove card if you have one there, and remove drive #4.
Otherwise hit power button for 8 seconds with the power cord removed along with other cables and devices then reconnect and do a normal power on.

  • Osx lion on macbook 3,1

Is it possible to install osx lion on MacBook 3,1 ?

There are several good sets of instructions on how to create an installation backup, whether flash drive or DVD.  One such is this MacWorld article.  There are other approaches using Recovery Assistant that are good also.  While these articles say Lion, they are also true for Mountain Lion...both Mac OS Xs have an installer that you must use to make the backup before you install it as it is deleted as the last step in the installation process.  The trick is to download the installer, make a copy in another location on your system, and use that copy to create a backup drive/disk.

  • My iMac is only 2 years old, but has stopped playing DVDs.  I upgraded to osx Lion.  Could that be the problem?

My Imac wont play store DVDs.  It will read files from a disc but not play movies.  It ejects the disc.  I recently upgraded to OSX Lion could that be an issue?

Reinstall Just OS X, clean and try different DVD's to confirm all don't work.
How to reinstall just OS X or erase/install OS X
I double Lion is the cause, likely a DVD region issue or a bad Lion install.
