Upgrading to SL from Tiger on new hard drive

I have a previous post about installing SL over Tiger but I wanted to ask anyone out there if this is really a wise choice given the imac I have is 3 years old but does have a brand new hard drive installed (my old one fried). I have been reading some reviews and as always they are mixed reviews. It will be a fresh install with nothing on the hard drive other than the tiger OS.
Also, will I have to install disc 2 of tiger for the application bundle or is any of that on the SL upgrade disc?

What I did was to use Disk Utility to partition my main drive (be sure to make a backup first), then installed Snow Leopard onto the empty partition (fresh install, no migration). The plain (cheaper) upgrade disk doesn't have the application bundle, but since so many things have changed you should test for compatibility if you are going to install older software.
This is where the new partition comes in handy - you have the best of both worlds. You can install updated applications and/or test the old ones to see if they still work, and if they don't you can always boot back in to Tiger and use the old stuff from there.

Installing Tiger on new Hard drive

Archaic as it is, I would like to get Tiger to install on my Macbook.
It originally came with Tiger, and then the hard drive recently crashed. (Don't ask about back-ups, it's a sore subject). I've replaced AND formatted the hard drive already. However, when I boot from the Installer disc (10.4.9) which came with my computer and try to install, iit does not recognize the hard drive (I couldn't even use the disk utility to reformat it-- had to go a different route).
So, the installer doesn't recognize the hard drive (at the "choose location" or whatever screen, it's blank)
and
the disk utility shows a partition, which exists and is formatted it to Mac Extended Journaled plus), but with the wrong name, and incorrect size. The full drive is listed at 2.3 TB instead of 320GB.
I have done a lot of reading on the internet about Tiger not being able to format a "large" drive. But now that it's formatted, I don't quite understand why it wouldn't be able to see it.

Step by step:
1. Turn on ur Macbook.
2. Load the CD. Your macbook should automatically use it to boot since there is no OS on ur new hard drive.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install tiger.
It's a very easy installation process. Don't be scared.:)

Cannot install Tiger on new hard drive ???!!!

I bought a Samsung 250GB hard drive from MCE Technologies and had it installed by an authorized "Mac Repair Center". When I then tried to install Tiger from the OSX install discs that came with my MacBook Pro, I got the error when trying to select the hard drive: "Cannot install OSX on this volume. OSX cannot be booted from this volume."
I then booted the computer using my old hard drive connected via USB2 and used SuperDuper to copy all its content to the new internal hard drive and made it bootable. Now the computer is able to boot using the new hard drive. It seems rater slow though (not just booting but also working afterwards) and I cannot install Bootcamp. It gives me an error that I should reformat this hard drive and reinstall Osx, which is exactly what I can't do. Does anyone have an idea why my original MacBook Pro OSX Install Disc doesn't work anymore (I assume altered computer configuration...) and how I could do a fresh install of OSX onto the new hard drive anyway ?

At this point, I would have recommended that you run Disk Utility from the installation disk and reformat the drive as Mac Extended (Journaled).
Open Disk Utility, click on the name of your drive to the left and check the format at the bottom. What does it say?

Transferring Purchased Music from iPhone to new hard drive

Hard-drive burned up and has been replaced. Most music was backed up, but not all. And most of the new music (that hasn't been backed-up) is on the iPhone. But I can't copy the files on my iPhone back to my new hard drive. Obviously there are security measures to keep folks from transferring files all over the place. But it seems that if it's on my iPhone, I must have obtained it legally, and there must be some accommodation for a dead hard drive.
Same question for my iPhone apps. I'd rather not pay for apps twice, and iTunes won't let me copy them from my iPhone back onto my 'puter. As soon as I sync apps, they'll all disappear, unless there's some way to convince the phone that it's looking at the old, pre-burned-up-hard-drive.
File>Transfer Purchases sort of worked, but not completely. I have about 600 songs on my iPhone, and it copied about 200 of them to my new hard drive. I have music purchased from iTunes, music copied from purchased CDs, and free downloads (Starbucks, Paste, etc). And there's no trend in what got copied and what didn't. Some of each category was copied, but not all. Very confusing that I can't find a pattern.

Apps issue solved. Or, more accurately, it's a non-issue. iTunes prompts you that you already bought the app and can download it for free. Not so with music, I'm afraid.

How can I transfer outlook data from Ipod to new hard drive?

My hard drive had to be replaced last week. Although my music was backed up by Norton 360, my Outlook contacts and calendar were not backed up. How can I transfer my data from my Ipod to my new hard drive? I am running Windowa XP, if that matters. Will a sync to Itunes destroy all my data on my Ipod?

Installing from DVD to New Hard Drive

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro, and a new 500 gig hard drive to use in it. The new hard drive is mounted using a hard drive dock. While attempting to install Snow Leopard on the new hard drive from the MacBook Pro's DVDs, I get the following message:
"Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this computer."
Is there any way to install a fresh version of Snow Leopard onto this new hard drive from these DVDs?

First prep your drive as follows:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Upon completion quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

How to add files from iPod to new hard drive after krasch?

My hard drive recently crasched. I use my iPod as back up. But now, I cannot find out how to copy the files back to the new hard drive on the computor. The iTune program only advices me to delite all information on the iPod to substitute it with the much lesser library on the computer. Obviously it must be possible to copy in both directions. But how do I do it?

Anyway, I do have a little background in troubleshooting. I thought it's a Mac security issue. I would want to try other options before deciding in opening the computer and taking out thehard drive as it is not as convenient as opening a PC.
Apple does make external hard drives available at the Apple Store, however it is an end users responsibility to backup their system. Apple does offer classes to new users and their 1:1 service too, whether the subject of backing up is mentioned in these I do not know. The subject of backing up as a class "subject" may be something you may want to mention to Apple a www.apple.com/feedback.
Many users go through the same pain as your friend, myself included! However once you go through the pain, it is a lesson seldom forgotten.
Many experiences users on these forums have redundant methods of backing up. When it comes to backing up redundancy is wise, why because a backup can (and often do) fail too. For example, in addition to using Time Machine, I also have another EHD that I use to create a bootable clone of my computer. That way if both my internal drive and TM back fails the worst that will happen is I have a system I can boot from that is a day or so old and continue running until I get all my systems fixed.

Moving from old to new hard drive, some songs lost track number in file nam

Anyone have thoughts on this? I changed to a larger hard drive a month ago. Copied everything over and things seemed OK. Synced daughter's ipod and things started acting weird. I compared old to new hard drive now and a bunch of songs are missing from the new drive but weirder is that some songs lost the track numebr in the name on the new drive - 04 loving.mp3 is now loving.mp3.
we can't find a pattern to why those specific songs are like that. any thoughts?

How to restore my backed up photos from iCloud on new hard drive?

My hard drive failed on my first mac book pro, I have a time machine which has restored all my data on to the new hard drive. However all my photos/videos have not been restored.
Can i access these through my backup on iCloud and how ?
Why have my photos not been included with time machine and the restoration ?

What data?
The iphone is not a back up device. Where is your back up? Using your back up is the simplest way.
If you have at least one unique contact and calendar entry in your computer, you should get the option to merge the data when you first sync.
You can transfer itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchase
The other music and pics cannot be synced back to the computer -it is a one way sync -computer to iphone.

Downgrade to Tiger with new hard drive?

So, here's my situation:
I've had my black macbook for just over a year and last week the drive randomly died on me. This is my first mac so I was quite upset. Anyway, I recently bought a new drive and the guy at the store offered to install Leopard for free (I had previously been on Tiger), to which I of course agreed.
Turns out that I highly dislike Leopard and would now like to downgrade. If I install a completely new drive, can I use my Tiger CDs that originally shipped with my macbook?
Any input would be appreciated.

Yes, you can install all the original software from the gray installer discs that came with the computer. Boot from the Installer Disc One. Proceed to the point where you select a target disk. Select your hard drive and click on the Options button. Select the top option - Erase and Install - then click on the OK button. Follow instructions to complete the installation.
If you want to install all the pre-bundled software then double-click on the Install Pre-Bundled Software icon on the Installer Disc One.

Hard Drive Dead. How do I upload songs from Ipod to new hard drive?

The hard drive on my computer crashed, and I had to buy a new one. Unfortunately, I did not have the old drive backed up and lost all my data, including my Itunes library - $90 or so in purchased ITune songs plus a tonn of songs from my CD collection. So, I now have my stagnant Ipod and am unable to expand its library without starting from scratch.
Is there a way to upload my entire library from my 30G Ipod to my new computer, running ITunes 7.02 (or the latest software edition I just downloaded)?

Installing OSX Tiger on new hard drive on a iMac G4

Hi
I've had a iMac G4 for about 4 years and the hard drive started to fail, seeing as my computer was way beyond any warrenty I opened it and replaced the hard drive with a maxtor 160GB drive. Ive put it back togethr and can boot it up using a firewire drive with OSX installed fine. But when I try and boot the computer and instal from the OSX disk that came with it, I hav a problem, it says the software can not be installed on this computer.
I've tried disconnecting the firewire and everything non essential before rebooting but I cant get it to work, any one know what I need to do?

Yeah, fraid so. When Apple ships out computers they all have install disks designed around that specific model. If you try to use that Macbook disc on a G4 tower it will detect the difference and refuse to load. It isn't a copyright thing but rather a difference in drivers or other software needed for that model. The retail version of the OS is a universal install including everything needed for every model capable of running Tiger. Presumably it doesn't load what isn't needed.Keep in mind that Leopard is due in October.

Recovering documents from computer onto new hard drive

My computer recently froze in the middle of watching a TV, which resulted in the gray screen of death and resulting in my hard drive crashing and getting a replacement. After getting home and starting from scratch again, I happened to search a few words in Spotlight and up popped results in documents that had been saved on my past hard drive. I don't have my Microsoft CDs with me to reinstall Word, so the documents only open up in TextEdit, but I'm trying to figure out how to get to those documents? And where are they saved???

In Spotlight, enter your search term. Click "Show All" at the top of the list. You'll get a new Finder window with the search results. Click on each desired file in turn, and at the bottom of the window, you'll see its location in a file path. You can double-click on any folder in that file path to open a window to that location.
