Upgrading to Snow Leopard - CD won't run - need to upgrade for iCloud

I wanted to update my wife's MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard from Leopard, and upon inserting the CD, it wouldn't load. I tried other CDs in her drive and they loaded up fine, and I tested inserting the Snow Leopard into my iMac, and it loaded up fine as well.
So I tried copying the contents of the Snow Leopard disc onto my wife's machine from my iMac, and after finishing copying & double-clicking on the Install icon now on my wife's harddrive, I got a message saying something like:
"You are not able to install this software (or Snow Leopard) in this way. Please install the software from the original CD", or something to that effect.
Nevertheless, I can't use the CD to install it on my wife's MacBook Pro, for unknown reasons, and I can't run the installer via the copied software from the CD.
How do I go about updating/upgrading this computer then to Snow Leopard? I want to install Snow Leopard, and get it updated the 10.6.8 so that my wife will be able to convert her .Me account over to iCloud and still use her email (primarily).
Thanks!

Firstly, are you using a retail Snow Leopard DVD?
If you are and the DVD won't load in the superdrive, it is possible to remotely install from your Mac, but not that way.
In the Applications/Utilities folder, you'll find an item called "Remote Install OS X".
Insert the DVD into your superdrive, open the utility and follow the instructions.
Here's a Knowledgebase article on the subject.
Although it's intended for installing on MBA or Mini without optical drives, other users have reported that it works with other Macs, too.
As always, the target must meet the minimum requirements for SL;

  • Trying to update laptop. Putting snow leopard on so I can then buy lion for icloud. after restarting the laptop keeps going on and off. is this normal. white screen too.

    Hi
I am trying to update my laptop to Lion for icloud. I am trying to put snow leopard on first but after putting in the disk and restarting my screen is white and it constantly sounds as if it is trying to start or close. Is this right? Thanks

So far so good (I asked because you've posted in the forum for PPC iMacs…).
So what SL disc are you using? The retail 10.6.3 disc (white with the snow leopard pic) or a grey disc borrowed from another Mac?

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. Does Snow Leopard still exist on my Mac? If so, is it possible to restart under Snow Leopard in order to run PowerPC apps? If not, is there an OS available in 64 bit that supports PowerPC apps? Mav ***.

The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it.

  • HT1338 can I upgrade straight to lion without purchasing snow leopard if I am running on OS 10.5.8

can I upgrade straight to lion without purchasing snow leopard if I am running on OS 10.5.8?

Well, yes, if your Mac meets the requirements, you can afford to erase the drive completely, & don't mind paying $10 more for Lion on a Flash stick than Snow Leopard/10.6 on DVD & Lion/10.7 download from the App Store is.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they do still have it:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
Or, if you can afford to erase everything & spend $10 more than the 10.6 Disc & 10.7 from the App Store...
Or if you can erase your disk...

I would wait for Mountain Lion to be released. According to Apple, Mountain Lion will be released by end of July 2012.
It will cost you only $19.99 to upgrade. You can find all the details at the following link...

  • Unable to import or copy photos from a time machine back up saved from snow leopard into iPhoto now running on lion

unable to import or copy photos from a time machine back up saved from snow leopard into iPhoto now running on lion

The correct method of restoring photos from Time Machine is to restore the entire library.
The way that TM backs up files makes nearly impossible to go into the backup via the Finder and recover individual files. So you will have to restore a library that contains the photos you need being sure to select the option to keep both versions.
Then open the restored library and export those photos you need.  Open your original library and import those photos.  After that you can delete the recently restored library.

Try Amazon but look for the iWork suite of software. It's only sold separately as Pages, Keynote, and Numbers from the App Store.

Trying to get icloud, installed snow leopard, now it says I need OSX, but my processor isn't right for it. Is this possible? Do I need to buy a nw computer? will I loose all my mobile me storage?

You will lose the entire contents of your iDisk whether or not you migrate to MobileMe as there is no equivalent in iCloud and MobileMe will be terminated at the end of June. You will need to download any data which you don't have on your Mac already.
Snow Leopard is not compliant with iCloud and most of the facilities will not work. You can migrate from MobileMe to iCloud at http://me.com/move even with Snow Leopard: when asked to confirm that your Mac is running Lion just lie and say 'yes'. Of course you won't be able to access iCloud directly from your Mac.
If you have MobileMe mail set up to collect mail from external POP accounts you should cancel this before migrating, or you may find it still working in iCloud (where it isn't supposed to) and with no way of stopping it.
This will be the situation with Snow Leopard when you have migrated:
Your email, calendars, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud. Contacts and Bookmarks cannot be migrated from a Snow Leopard Mac.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery, will continue to work as before until next June.
Syncing of Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items and Keychains between Macs, and Mail Accounts, Mail Rules, System Preferences, Signatures & Smart Mailboxes between Macs & iOS devices, will cease altogether.
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).
There are a couple of third-party solutions which may be of interest.
BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.

  • I would like to use icloud on my mac which has snow leopard, so do I really need to update to snow lion, is it worth it and if so, how do I do it?

Ok, so how do I get icloud on this snow leapord imac? Is it worth updating to lion, and if so how do I do it?

If you need iCloud, you need Lion. You buy it from the App Store for $29.99.
If you are running Snow Leopard, your system already meets the minimum specfications for Lion. However, the 2 GB minimum memory requirement is generally considered inadequate. 4 GB is a more realistic minimum; 8 GB for Lion to be comfortable.

Hi JoeyR.  Well, according to this link at the Apple Store, OS X Moutain Lion became available in July and I downloaded it for $19.99.  I figured I would do that before renewing my Norton security SW.  Are we talking about the same thing?

  • 2 things: iPhoto isn't automatically copying all my imported photos into an iPhoto album folder AND ever since i upgraded my MacBook 120GB to Snow Leopard, iTunes won't recognize my iPhone.

So i have a 120GB MacBook that's about 4 years old (just updated to Snow Leopard--been working in Iraq, i'm a little behind).
Never had a problem with it.
I also have an iPhone 4 which i've had for about a year (up-to-date software as of about a month ago).
Never had a problem with it.
I've had iTunes for years of course (up-to-date).
    Never had a problem.
    1.
Now my iTunes won't recognize my iPhone since the Snow Leopard update.
iPhoto will recognize my phone, but iTunes won't.
Went through all the preferrences and i can't find anything that isn't set properly.
iTunes Helper is used during startup.
    Everything seems fine.
    Any help?
    2.
I use a WD external hard drive to back my Mac up every week or so.
I recently realized that half of my pictures from iPhoto are not copied to the external.
    They haven't been transfering over.
So i snooped through my folders and as it turns out, iPhoto hasn't been copying the pictures i import from my iPhone to iPhoto and saving them as .jpg files in the pictures folder (or iPhoto album or whatever) like i think it's supposed to.
My pictures folder has approx half of all my pictures in it, meaning at some point (probably 2 years ago) iPhoto stopped making the file copies of my imported pictures.
    I do not know why.
No idea how to fix it.
If i were able to fix that (with your help), would all the pictures that haven't been copied automatically copy to my pictures folder once i had the issue resolved or would there be a lot of dragging and dropping?
I've been clumsily and sloppily copying all my pictures to a new folder on my desktop and manually transferring that folder to a thumb drive (which i keep in my pocket) and my external (just so i have them in some form) in case my computer crashes or a mortar shell lands on my room and blows my computer up.
Can anyone please help me with any of this?
I can't just stoll down to the Apple store to ask the Genius Bar (I'm in Baghdad) and i don't have Apple Care so no one will help me on the phone when i call Apple.
    Thanks so much.

    hey mill1640,
Did you ever get your iPhone to register with iTunes? I just upgraded as well to Snow Leopard, and my my isn't recognized at all also.
If you did get this resolved, I would appreciate a little suggestion in the right direction.
    Many thanks,
    Josh
