Upgrading to SSD and copying all content from old drive?

Hello,
I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro currently running 10.9 and wish to upgrade my original 5400rpm hard drive to an SSD.
My MBP did not come with any install disks and came with Snow Leopard installed. I have since upgraded to 10.9 Maverick.
How should I proceed in terms of copying my current drive (incl Software, Applications and documents) to the new SSD? Should I use Carbon Cloner? I have heard that a simple clone will not copy the restore partition which will be required in case of a restore in the future? I would want this as I have no disks.
Is there a step by step guide anywhere please?
I have the new SSD and a caddy so that I can plug it in if required. I should also add that I have a time capsule if that helps?
Thanks in advance.
S

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do it without any external drive. You just need a SATA to USB adapter to connect the old HDD to your Mac.
First of all, replace the HDD by the new SSD, and then, start up your Mac while holding down Command, Option (Alt) and R keys. This will make your Mac start up into Internet Recovery.
Then, you can use Disk Utility's Restore feature to clone the old HDD onto the SSD, but first format the SSD in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Then, use Restore > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html
Finally, restart your Mac and unplug the old HDD, and OS X will start up.
Another way is to make a backup of your files onto the Time Capsule you mentioned you have got with Time Machine. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 Then, install the SSD and follow the same steps to start up into Internet Recovery and format the SSD, but then, close Disk Utility and choose the option to restore the Time Machine backup

  • Error message- "LR has encountered problems reading this photo" after installing LR 5.6 on new computer and retrieving all contents from old HD from external HD.

    Hi-
I got a new PC laptop, retrieved all old HD contents from my external HD, installed LR 5.6 (5.4 on previous PC) and when I tried to open up my old Lightroom catalog it has an error saying "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo.  You will not be able to make adjustments to this photo".  I tried to open the catalog straight from my external HD with the same error message. I've read about four billion forum threads to try to figure it out- files do not seem to be missing as most threads indicate.  The other threads suggest there is a corruption with the file, but I don't THINK that is the case.  Are there any other suggestions?   If the file is corrupted, how do I find out for sure?  Have I lost all my edits??
Thanks for your help and time!

Just got brand new macbook pro (13inch) and restored all data from old mac via time machine. Now when I p/back a track in logic I get audio drop out for 3-4 secs every 10 - 15 secs!! What is going on and what can I do? Its the same version of logic and all other functions seem fine!

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • Need to copy all content from iPhone 3gs to Mac Inc Contacts

    Hi,
My wife's iPhone 3GS was synced to Windows 7 PC before it crashed, unfortunately i have no backup, so I need to restore all content from iPhone to either a Mac or PC... her iphone was last updated to OS v4.1... need to update it to OS v5..most important is I need to get contacts  and photos off the iphone as well as purchased apps...........HELP!!
Thanks in advance for your help!!

First, iTunes will only sync non-purchased media one direction: from computer to phone.  To copy non-purchased media from your phone to your computer (such as ripped CDs, etc.) you will need to purchase 3rd party software such asTouch Copy.  Once you recover this media to your new computer, carefully follow wjosten's directions in this post to migrate other data to your new computer: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13356770#13356770.

  • Copy all contents from Nokia N9

    Hi,
Is it possible to copy the contents, especially SMS/MMS, from a Nokia N9 to a new WP8 phone such as the Lumina 920? My older Nokia phones were able to do this wih a built in Sync feature (N95 -> E71 -> N9). I can't find any mention of this feature on the new WP8s. There's software available that will copy the Contacts etc which is useful, but can't find anything about SMS/MMS.
    Thanks,
    Stu.

    Hi StuBalls,
Thank you for posting and welcome to the forum.
If you want to sync your files from N9 to your new Nokia Lumia 920 then, consider these simple steps below.
    • Contacts, calendar and photos
In the Nokia Suite (version 3.6 onwards) you can transfer contacts, calendar items and photos to the Microsoft SkyDrive cloud service by using Nokia Suite. From the SkyDrive the content is synced to your Lumia phone. To use SkyDrive, you need a Microsoft Account (formerly known as Windows Live ID). If you do not have a Microsoft Account account, you can create one at live.com, or using your phone.
Make sure you have Nokia Suite 3.6.11 or higher installed on your PC.
Use a compatible USB data cable to connect your Nokia N9 to your PC.
Launch Nokia Suite, and start the sync setup, select Sync > Sync now > Set up sync.
Select the content you wish to sync with your phone.
    Start the sync.
Once the sync is complete, select Show details to see what was synced.
To upload the content to SkyDrive, select Tools > Upload to SkyDrive and follow the instructions on the screen.
Sign into your Microsoft account with your Lumia phone to get the copied content.
Note: SMS message can not be transferred directly, but you can export all messages in Nokia Suite (Messaging>File/Export all text messages) and open the resulting Comma Separated File (.csv) in Excel or OpenOffice Calc to create an Excel sheet (.xls file) this can then be copied to your SkyDrive and opened from the Office app. You could also use a tool to create separate files from the exported .CSV file and copy all of these to SkyDrive.
For more information, open Nokia Suite and, on the Help menu, click Nokia Suite help > Switching to Nokia Lumia. You can also take a look on this link for further details.
    Hope it helps.

  • Need help getting ALL iTunes from old comp hard drive

Old computer XP Home died after house was hit by lightning. Surge protector gave it's life but not enough to save the day. However both hard drives from old computer are fine and function via connection of USB external hard drive enclosure.
New computer is Vista Home Premium on AMD64duo w/4G RAM and 500GB hard drive.
Connected old hard drives to USB and can see everything. Did Import Folder and copied most files from old iTunes Music directory. (I say most files because iTunes continues to crash after approx 10 minutes of this copy process. On 17th try now.)
Can see and play the music that got copied but artwork is gone. Playlists are gone. Ratings gone. Basically all the preferences of how I had the old iTunes setup.
Needing help in understanding how to get Artwork and anything else I can from the old iTunes.
Have not tried to plug in iPod yet. Will wait atm.
First old drive had Program files and Second old drive had all Data files.

First, I followed the instructions on this site for Backing up itunes library by copying to a external hard drive.........
That's what it does. It makes a backup copy of the iTunes folder. iTunes will not use that folder or do anything to that folder.
All that succeeding in doing was mirroring whatever I did on the C:/ drive on the E:/ drive i.e. if I deleted itunes from the C:/ drive it disappeared from the E:/ drive.
Do you mean after you followed the instructions and copied \Music\iTunes folder to the external drive and then deleted something from iTunes, it deleted it from the external drive also?
As above, iTunes will not use or do anything to that folder.
Next, I followed these instructions for Moving the itunes media folder to the external drive.
Why? You already copied the entire iTunes folder (including th emedia folder) to the external drive.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the _iTunes library.itl_ file in the iTunes folder on the external.
This too didn't help as the media folder is not the problem, its the library as its 735kb!
What do you mean "the library"?
735kB is small for the iTunes library.itl file and a single file in iTunes is larger than that.
Am I right in thinking there's no way of moving the library to the external drive whilst wiping it from the C;/ drive?
Yes. Follow my intruction above (Choose library) and iTunes will use the iTunes folder on the external.
You can then delete \Music\iTunes on the C: drive.

  • When I try copying some content from a webpage and paste it to quickoffice document or in e Mail. all the text copies but, no graphics/pictures. how to get them pasted?

I tried copying some content from various websites (open content from plian HTML pages) and tried to paste it in Quickoffice document as well as in mai application. all the text got pasted properly however the content had some graphics and pictures in it that did not get pasted. So, I want to know if there is any way I can do the copy and paste from website including embedded graphics

You will need to copy and paste the images separately from the text. Or you can try pasting into TextEdit. However, it should work if the editor can handle RTFD files as does TextEdit. You cannot copy images to a plain text document or editor.

Apps are not part of the backup. You need to sync them to the iPhone from iTunes on your computer or re-download them from the iTunes Store. For the latter option, see:

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.
But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.
Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.
I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.
Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.
    Thanks,

I have experienced the same problem. (I don't know why my previous reply got deleted.)
The problem all relates to the CSM mode of Toshiba BIOS.
The solution is adding a boot partition (FAT32) on the drive that is in the original ODD spot.
Use a Windows 8 Installer (on a USB drive) to build a boot sector on that partition and direct it to the SSD where Windows 7 is installed. Then after you have done all of this, switch back to UEFI mode.
The system should be able to boot Windows 7 properly from the SSD in UEFI mode.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD under CSM mode

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-ASMBN22 to SSD (Crucial M550) and replace the optical drive by the original HDD with caddy.
In order to install Windows 7, I change the BIOS to CSM mode. But now the system won't boot automatically from the SSD. It only boot from HDD which is in the ODD spot.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my SSD and I can boot from it correctly. However, if I don't press F12 when it starts. It will always try to boot from HDD.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSD and HDD. Is there any other way to change the boot order among HDD and SSD?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I did the same operation to my Portege R30-A-17C, and have the same problem, is there any way to boot without pushing F12 every time.

some people have reported issues trying this with content not being found etc...
On a sidenote: I am pretty sure that in some of those cases what actually happened was that people opened Logic immediately after installing or copying content, and then expecting Logic to find this, but the Spotlight index (which EXS24 and NI's Kontakt use to find samples) was probably still busy updating.
This can take a few minutes up to half an hour or more (e.g. after installing big sample ibraries).
A pulsating dot inside the magnifying glass Spotlight symbol, on the top right corner of the screen, indicates that the Spotlight Index is being rebuilt or updated. Other indications are active MDS and/or MDWorker processes; those can be seen in Activity Monitor.
(these processes are usually open, the CPU % is what matters)

  • Is it possible to copy all comments from one pdf and paste to another?

    Hi Adobe Community
I have a pdf file that has 100+ pages with square markups and arrows. The pdf that was marked up is from last year, but this year the format is the same, but the numbers have changed. Rather than going through every single page and commented as I did last year, is it possible to copy all comments from last years pdf and paste them into this years pdf, in the same place?
    Thanks

You can export comments to an FDF file and import the FDF into another PDF. In Acrobat 11, you'd select: Comment > Comment List > [click the little icon in right of panel toolbar] > Export All to Data File

  • I upgraded to OSX and lost all my photos from Ilife acan I get them back

I upgraded to OSX and lost all my photos from Iphoto, can I get them back.

Are you sure, you are viewing the correct iPhoto library? iPhoto may have created a new Library.
Hold down the alt/options  key ⌥, while you double click iPhoto to launch it.  Is there more than one Photo Library in the panel that opens? Then try the other libraries, if your photos are in there.
