Upgrading to SSD from HDD need experienced help.

Greetings,
I am working now on my first laptop, coming from a very amateur backround of selfbuilt desktops. I wanted to know a little more about SSD's for the W530. I urrently have the 500gb HDD for my main bay as well as a Sandisk mSATA 16gb for caching.
I want to upgrade to a SSD for the bootdrive, and I understand the process of burning the recovery discs... however, I would like to ask of you readers how many slots are available within the W530 for Drives.
Follow are a few more questions I would like to work on while i post around and read more about optimizing my laptop.
What is the benefit of RAID with two SSDs?
Are there issues I may run into running a dual boot system if i end up with two SSDS one with Windos and the others a linux based OS for programming?
What is the difference between SATA III and mSATA?
Thank you for your time, your information, and your charming good looks.

W530 i7-3840Qm. Quad K1000M. 16GB RAM. 16GB mSSD(expresscache). 500gb HDD

You need:
1. An SSD. On the T430 this must be a 7.0mm thick model. Otherwise any capacity or SATA interface will work.
2. An Ultrabay Adapter. You can buy the OEM version from Lenovo or a much cheaper clone from eBay. Make sure you get an adapter that's 12.7mm thick.
3. Disk cloning software. I use Acronis True Image but there are other products available that will do the job.
Procedure:
1. Install disk cloning software.
2. Replace the current HDD with the SSD and put the HDD in the Ultrabay Adpater.
3. Reboot from the HDD in the Ultrabay. You'll need to interrupt the boot using the ThinkVantage button in order to select a different boot device.
4. Run disk cloning software to copy the contents of HDD to SSD. You may want to adjust partition sizes if the SSD is larger or small than the HDD.
5. Reboot using the default boot device, i.e. the SSD in the standard drive bay.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD under CSM mode

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-ASMBN22 to SSD (Crucial M550) and replace the optical drive by the original HDD with caddy.
In order to install Windows 7, I change the BIOS to CSM mode. But now the system won't boot automatically from the SSD. It only boot from HDD which is in the ODD spot.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my SSD and I can boot from it correctly. However, if I don't press F12 when it starts. It will always try to boot from HDD.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSD and HDD. Is there any other way to change the boot order among HDD and SSD?
    Thanks,
    Louis

    Hi,
I did the same operation to my Portege R30-A-17C, and have the same problem, is there any way to boot without pushing F12 every time.
    Thanks,

  • Upgrade to SSD or HDD? Late 2011 MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro, running Yosemite with 500GB hard drive & 4 GB of RAM.
I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 16GB regardless to speed things up a little.
I'm a very basic level user. Mainly use it for web surfing, watching movies, downloading music etc.
I don't think I want to lose the SuperDrive as I burn cd's to play in my car.
Reckon an upgrade to an internal HDD should do the trick. Looking to get 2TB at least. Can anyone recommend anything to me please & explain to me how I go about transferring data from current HDD to the new 1?
    Thanks!

Vendors to check are OWC, DataMem, and Best Buy. I would recommend Seagate, HSGT, and Toshiba. The latter now makes a 2 TB notebook sized drive you can use in that model. I believe this is the largest capacity for a notebook drive.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.
But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.
Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.
I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.
Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.
    Thanks,

I have experienced the same problem. (I don't know why my previous reply got deleted.)
The problem all relates to the CSM mode of Toshiba BIOS.
The solution is adding a boot partition (FAT32) on the drive that is in the original ODD spot.
Use a Windows 8 Installer (on a USB drive) to build a boot sector on that partition and direct it to the SSD where Windows 7 is installed. Then after you have done all of this, switch back to UEFI mode.
The system should be able to boot Windows 7 properly from the SSD in UEFI mode.

  • Catalog hell since upgrading to LR3 from LR2. Please help.

Ever since I upgraded from LR2 to LR3 I've been in a hellish runaround with my catalog. Whenever I start up LR3 a dialog box pops up asking me to "Please upgrade the catalog file "Lightroom_Catalog (original)" for use with Lightroom 3." It then makes a new catalog file. The problem is that I'm asked this question every time I open LR3 and I haven't had time, until now, to research the problem and I now have 3 different catalogs. AND when I allow it to upgrade the file I'm now getting a pop up saying "LR couldn't update the format of its catalog file because the file appears to be damaged." As far as I'm concerned LR3 is what damaged it in the first place. What can I do? I have jobs coming up and I just need LR to work and I need access to my catalog of photos. PLEASE help!
Forever in your debt if you can help.
    Anita

How do you start Lightroom? Do you start via a Lightroom Icon or by double clicking on a catalog file within Windows Explorer or some other shortcut?
Keep in mind that when Lightroom 3 upgrades your catalog, the catalog is saved under a different name, usually the original name with a "-2" appended at the end of the name. Your original Lightroom 2 catalog remains untouched, so if you keep opening that version it will ask you if you want to upgrade it again or if you want to open the Lightroom 3 version.
Hope this shelds some light on your issue, otherwise please let us know so we can continue troubleshooting.

  • Thinking of moving to Mac from PC--need iPhoto help

    Hi All,
I'm thinking about getting my wife a Mac to replace her PC to get a better computing experience. She's not very computer-literate, and the frequent Windows lockups and other problems are causing much frustration.
She mainly works with digital photos, creating slide shows for family members to view on their macs, pcs, and tv sets. She currently uses Photoshop Elements 5 for WIndows for her work. It's my understanding that there are some differences between PSE5 for Windows and PSE6 for the Max. The Windows version has Organizer, which is the component that allows you to organize photos (tagging, etc) and create slide shows. The Mac version uses something called Bridge.
My wife spends most her time creating albums, slide shows, printing pictures and the like, but she only does light editing. I'm thinking that she may be better off with something iPhoto than with Elements. One issue we have with PSE5 is that it creates photo cds, not true dvds, and the quality of slide shows played on a tv set isn't very good. Another issue concerns how we'd do the conversion. I guess we'd lose the slide shows we've already created, but can we preserve the photo takes?
I'm really flying blind here, having never worked with a mac or iphoto. Any help or advice from this community would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks much,
    David

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can't use Bridge and iPhoto together. Metadata added via bridge will cause problems with iPhoto. To use Photoshop or PSE with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. I just feel un easy about this. ha.

  • AE using socket to import picture from URL - Need Your Help

I have a project that works with local network using the path name. I want to update the project to replace all placeholders with a picture located at a URL address instead of the local network. I have no experience with socket coding and can't seem to find the right snippets of code on the internet to get me through this point of using URL as a file location.

OK, this comes close to working. I can read the jpg file with QuickTime, though it is corrupted and the image is different color or hue. Nothing else will read the jpg file, it so my efforts to use After Effects have still not been met.
I have not idea why I have to read 1 byte at the beginning of the data set and discard it. I can't find enough information about the jpg header format but it seems there is corruption at the top of the downloaded file. Since I'm downloading the 'contentLength', it's odd that midstream I get corrupted data. It appears to be consistent too.
Anyway, I am about at a lose.

  • Trying to buy a phone from BB, need some help.

I called Tmobile this morning to try to clarify some pricing on the Nexus S.
    My goal is this.
    2 Nexus S phones
    750 Shared Minutes
    Unlimited Text
    Unlimited Internet
    Problem One:
I called T-mobile because I get a discount on their service because of my employer, however they told me that I couldn't apply the discount for 6 months because I'd be purchasing the phones through Best Buy.
    Problem Two:
On the BestBuy site the T-Mobile - Even More Family Talk + Text - 750 (Includes 2 Lines) is 99.99$
The T-mobile Rep told me that it should be 79.99$
Best buy also makes you add the 30$ data plan to each phone. Bringing my total monthly bill to 169.99$.
The T-Mobile rep told me my monthly total for everything I wanted was going to be 139.99$.
    Summation:
My bill with at&t for a Nexus One and a Captivate is 150.00$ if I can't get lower than that I have no incentive to switch at this time.
    Request for Assistance:
Can anyone with a Nexus S family plan shed some light on this? Maybe a T-mobile or BB employee?
    Thanks!

Also, I've never heard of this "wait 6 months for a discount" thing you were told about. You can find the T-Mobile Corporate Migration form here or you can do it over the phone by calling 1-877-453-8824

  • Performance Setup and Setting up SSDs and HDDs. PLEASE HELP! Newbie over here!

I am new to all of this Adobe setups and learning computer hardware. So please go easy on me.
First question. What would be the best way to setup my computer for the best performance when using After Effects and Premiere at the same time? I really don't understand this. What's the best options here when I only have 16 GB of RAM?
Second Question. How should I set my drives up? This is what I think to be correct but I would love a second opinion.
And also what's the best way to set this up for Premiere?

Start with Tweakers Page and the articles there.

  • Should I upgrade to Lion from 10.6.8 to improve stability of Java program i am running?

I have a Java program problem, it's unstable and losing connection and freezing. Will an upgrade to Lion from 10.6.8 help?
    thanks

they don't claim it but it is. I have never had a problem with the 2008 macbook, just the desktop. Narrowed it down to this after trying everything else speaking with Scottrade, Oracle and Apple.
I tried to downgrade but got lost at the utilitoes terminal part. any easier way? Apple wont help me downgrade through my care program and I have no idea.
    Thanks

  • Upgrade HDD to SSD (Do i need to re-install?)

I just bought an SSD (Samsung 470 series is the one thats best with MBP right?) and i want to replace it with the stock HDD that came with my 2011 MBP 13".
What if i upgrade RAM from 4GB to 8GB and transfer from HDD to SSD by carbon copy cloner. Do i need to re-install Lion then?
Is TRIM automatically enabled if i transfer from HDD to SSD?

Upgrading the RAM is fine by itself. Just know you only have two slots, and thus need matching pairs of 4GB modules to increase the RAM from 4GB to 8GB. If you have $900, OtherWorld Computing has 16GB of RAM (two 8GB modules) for sale. (no compensation)
Use the online Crucial checker and MacTracker to make sure your getting the correct specs of the RAM (and the amount of modules) before purchasing.
What you need to do is use the free to use (donations accepted) Carbon Copy Cloner on the HDD while it's still in the machine, clone to a external powered drive and hold option to boot from it, test it out that it works.
Then make the HDD to SSD switch and option boot from the clone again, format the SSD HFS+ Journaled and use CCC to clone it onto the SSD.
OtherWorld Computing and iFixit has videos, pictures, instructions and tools needed.
When you clone, it clones the OS X partition only, not both your OS X partition and the Lion Recovery Partition, which in your case is unnecessary to have if you have a "hold option" bootable clone. (should keep two at times)
If you need to download Lion installer again, simply use MacAppStore and hold option and click on Purchases, either in Lion or Snow Leopard and then make a couple of " hold c" bootable DVD's from these instructions.
    http://www.eggfreckles.net/notes/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
These DVD's made from these instructions contain the full OS X Lion, not a Recovery Lion disk or the Lion Recovery Partition which Apple provides a download for and requires a lengthily Internet connection to download Lion before it's installed.
Far as setting the TRIM, I don't know about that. Hopefully someone else will answer.
If not ask Dave (Bmer) over here:
    http://macosg.com/
He replaced his hard drive with a OCZ Vertex, the fastest SSD's on the planet and also his Superdrive with a 7,200 RPM 750GB drive for storage (note: you can't boot from a Lion/Snow/Windows DVD from a external optical drive) so he would know best what to do.
Also OCZ just came out with a 480 gb or so very fast SSD, the Vertex 3 series, just as fast as the smaller SSD's but with more storage capacity, so that would be worth checking into. (smaller SSD's are faster, larger older ones are just a bit faster than a regular hard drive)
Also check out your Mac model's SATA number using the fre MacTracker and System Profiler, this way you can by the right SSD for the price and know your bus speed limitation accessing the SSD.
    Good luck.

Thanks. How do I booth to IR? Won't  I need to connect to the internet to be able to booth to Internet Recovery... Please give steps as I am pretty new to this.
Turn the Mac on (or reboot it) and press command-option-R as soon as you hear the startup chime. Hold the keys down until you see a globe, then release. When the Recovery Menu appears you choose Disk Utility and format the SSD for use in a Mac (Erase>Set Format to MacOS Extended (Journaled), then exit Disk Utility and choose Install OSX
You will need to be connected to the Internet and your Mac should detect your network and ask for a password automatically when Recovery Starts.
