Upgrading to Studio - will old projects open/

I am about to upgrade to Final Cut Studio - Here is the dilemma...I have to get the full program, not the upgrade because my FCP program was "borrowed" from someone else and I will have to go from scratch with the studio, an upgrade won't work, I don't think. I did pruchase FCE initially, but you obviously upgrade from FCE to Studio. Anyway, when I install the Studio programs, will I be able to open all of my old projects in Studio, or will I have to keep all the old software from FCP and FCE on my computer?
Thanks.

Final Cut Pro does a good job opening projects from previous versions - including FCE. Once opened and saved they are not backwardly compatible.
If I was looking at installing FCS2 over your collection of previously installed stuff I'd seriously consider acquiring a new hard drive, format it MacOS Extended (Journaled) and install OSX and the applications from scratch.
This does two things for you -
1. you have an absolutely pristine installation of the OS and your apps. They will run very well.
2. you have a backup (your old system disk) if things go kaboom.
Cheers,
x

  • I want iLife 8 but not iMovie 8, can old projects open in iMovie 6?

I have seen the new iMovie 8 and the missing functions makes it totally useless to me. I am very disappointed with the dumbing down of iMovie with this new version but enough has been said by many others about that already. However, the new iPhoto link to .Mac gallery looks good, and likewise the new version of GarageBand so I would like to get iLife 8 just for those, without using iMovie 8. I want to carry on using iMovie 6 for my old and new projects. If I upgrade to iLife 8 can my old projects continue to be accessed by iMovie 6 if I go to the "previous version folder" and open the application from there? I do not want to risk anything going wrong with the old projects before I have completed them. I definitely am not interested in even starting anything in iMovie 8 as I use all of the lost functions when editing my movies.
When I bought my first Mac 4 years ago, it was the sophistication of the iLife application that came with the computer, and particularly iMovie, that most influenced my decision to switch...nothing to do with iPod halo effects or pretty white hardware. If I was making the same choice now, I would not be similarly impressed and influenced by the capabilities (or not) of iMovie 8.
I can kind of see why there might be a need for the YouTube link up and webcasting functions in iMovie 8 for some people, but I still think that the majority of people using iMovie want to make good looking and sounding movies to store on DVD's. I really hope that Apple give us a proper upgrade to iMove 6 HD and a separate application for all the other simplified stuff.

Thanks both of you. All of the earlier projects that I want to open are in iMovie 6 so it looks as if that will still work.
QuickTimeKirk, I don't think I was really ranting ( I did that a few days a go and my post was deleted, so fair game), but I was expressing an opinion that from what I have read, is shared by many on this forum, and on others. I am not saying that iMovie 8 is absolute rubbish, it will work well for lots of people and has some good functionality if you want to make quick, simple movies and upload them to the web, but I sincerely believe that it falls very short for the many of us who want to continue to be able to do what we had been able to before with the old version. Whenever Apple had previously given us an upgrade to an application it had added not taken away...at least not so drastically as with iMovie 8. To me, not being able to at least edit sound or use a timeline, or themes, just means I can't get the same quality of movie I could before, therefore it is useless to me. I am just expressing my disappointment that a product that I had previously been impressed enough with to switch from PC's because of, no longer holds the same appeal. And I am only talking about iMovie 8, not Apple products in general, or the rest of iLife. I just wanted increased functionality, not less with a new version, and V8 is probably going to work for lots of people, but not for me. And I am not alone in that.

  • Upgrading to 10.1-old projects?

I am just finishing some projects and starting new ones this week. I am wondering how easy it is to get used to the new 10.1 system of FCPX...Is a tutorial necessary?
What if I need to get into old projects that I did in previous versions? How complicated is that? Thanks.

It is not complicated but it worth planning and following the videos by Steve Martin and Mark Spencer that explain quite clearly the upgrade process and the new media management.
Updating to 10.1 is totally worth it.
Older projects can be upgraded and used with 10.1

  • Will FCE Projects Open in FC Studio 2?

    Hello
Was wondering if FCE projects will open in FC6, (Final Cut Studio 2)?
    Thanx
    Mike

Probably – as long as the version of FCP was later than the version of FCE. They were both released in 2007, but at different times – and they both were updated thereafter.

  • Updated to 10.1 now old project opens in TextEdit instead

So I updated FCPX and libraries to 10.1.
My problem is an old client just emailed me to do a new edit on a project that was using the last version of FCPX.  No problem right?
It's on a portable hard drive.  I plug it in expecting an Update prompt and nothing happens so I find the project file and it opens in Text Edit instead of opening FCPX.
What can I do to update that project?  I have several hard drives just like this.

Hi Tom and Luis, thank you for your help.
The projects and events folders are at the root level of the external drive I have attached.  When I open FPX 10.1 my updated libraries (small projects on my internal drive) appear.   They look like 4 small purple squares and it seems as if they are loading from the "Movies" folder.
However, nothing else happens.  I am not prompted to update the (10.9) "Final Cut Events" folder or the "Final Cut Projects" folder that are located at the root of the external drive I have attached.  I have closed and reopened FCPX with no luck.
Should I create a "Movies" folder on the external hard drive and place "Final Cut Events" folder or the "Final Cut Projects" in that folder?

  • Old Project Opens in New FCP with only Browser and Viewer

I can't open a project created in previous FCP and get the timeline or canvas, even when I click on Window-Arrange-Standard. I just want to send that old movie as a quicktime movie, self-contained to the external hard drive where I have the remake of that movie, but can't get to its timeline to select and do so. I'm also afraid I can't find this forum again for any answer you post, so can you please also send email? I promise not to use it for anything but this question. [email protected] I don't know what OSX version number I have, but it's called Tiger
    Thanks,
    Deb

If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like you can actually open the project file, but cannot see your sequence.
Have you looked for the sequence in your Browser window and tried double-clicking it? The only way to have your Canvas and Timeline windows visible is to have a sequence opened.

  • I interrupted the upgrading of muse and it will no longer open up. It's there but not complete.

I hadn't used Muse in a while and opened Abobe Muse, it informed me that it need to be updated along with Adobe Air.  Somehow I interrupted the upgrade and it will no longer open as a program. I am not sure if I should uninstall the program and reinstall it?

AFAIK you are on the wrong mailing list.

  • Import-Export of track add some old projects and files.

We want to copy one NWDI track to new one.
When we Forward one track to to created new one, and open projects in Development Studio,
many old projects and files appeared, thatis not visible if to open old track in Studio.
So question is - how to export one track so it would appear in studio same way, but not "open all old existed" way?
As well very interested reason why so happens ?
    thanks

    Hi Vladimir,
I am not sure I fully understand your question, but if you'd like to copy a track to an other one, then I can suggest you to go for replication. This way you can keep the whole version history as well.
Replicating a Track into a Different DTR Repository (despite the title of this article I was confirmed by the development support that you can also use this procedure to replicate into the same DTR, not only into a different one)

If this is not what you need, then please rephrase the question for better understanding.
    Thank you!

  • Will I lose my old project files etc with upgrading to FCP 2

    Hi
I think after upgrading to Leopard with FCP Studio 1 not able to use compressor or DVD Studio Pro to burn. I think I need to upgrade to Studio 2 as my only logical answer without major problems. If I upgrade from 5.0.1 PowerPC version to Studio 2 will my old projects be moved over to upgrade no problem?
    Thanks
    Jason

Thanks for the reply guys! Do any of you see another solution to the problem of leopard and using the older apps? I guess it is better to start new after installing leopard. Lastly do I need to trash the old FCP 1 before install of FCP 2 or does it just upgrade it?
    Thanks Jason

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Old Projects Will Not Open

I updated my idvd when I installed iLife and now I cannot open the projects I created in the earlier version. Whenever I attempt to open them I receive the following error message:
    Unsupported File Type: Unknown Format
    Mac HD/Users/Jen/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes/iDVD 4/20TransparentBlack.theme/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Background.tif
Any ideas how I can access my old projects so I can edit them?

I looked at the referenced file and it's just a background image that says "Drag a photo or movie here". It's hard to see how that can produce what you are seeing.
You probably should try the old 'fix' to see if it helps.
Quit iDVD, then delete the iDVD plist file (preference file) com.apple.iDVD.plist
    Restart iDVD
    Give it a try.

Recently upgraded to OS X 10.4 and now DVD Studio Pro 2 will not open properly. The program hangs on open. If I try to open an old project file, the program will open, but will be frozen. I have deleted preferences, repaired permissions, etc. Any other ideas as to what's going on?

  • Help! I lost my old projects when I upgraded to Yosemite.

Help! I lost my old projects, and old videos that were stored on imovie when I upgraded to Yosemite. It asked if I wanted to upgrade my projects, etc., but now they are not showing up even after I clicked that option!!! Please help! Thank you!

    Hello Andrew 97,
The steps below may help get your events and projects to appear in iMovie.
Verify that the latest iMovie update is installed.
    Open the Mac App Store.
    Click the Updates tab.
Click Update All or the Update button that appears next to iMovie.
After verifying that you have the latest version of iMovie, you can update your projects and events by following these steps.
In the Finder, click the Go menu and choose Home.
    Open the Movies folder.
In the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folders, you’ll find a file named “UpdatedtoiMovie10.” Move this file to the Trash from both folders.
    Open iMovie.
Choose File > Update Projects and Events.
iMovie will update your projects and events. You can repeat these steps for projects and events stored on external drives.

  • Will GarageBand 4 ('08) projects open in the lastest version?

I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.5.8, and just bought a new Snow Leopard disc with plans to upgrade fully to Mavericks.
I've backed up the whole system with Time Machine on an external drive. I have a bunch of Garageband projects made in version 4.1.2.
Will the newest version of GarageBand open these old projects? Or alternatively, will I still be able to run GB 4, even with the newest GB installed?
I'm looking forward to upgrading to the latest OS X after so many years, but it is imperative that I retain access to my old projects!
    Thank you in advance!

yes, i just tested GBv4, and it appeared to run fine under 10.9.1

  • Not able to install Logic on mac with OSX.  10.8.2. Error message: Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported. I have logic studio 8 software purchased in 2007 and upgraded with logic studio 9 (purchased in 2009)

After an earlier attempt to move Logic from my other mac (OSX 10.6.8) with the migration assistant to my new mac with OSX 10.8.2. I've re-started the whole start up process by erasing the hard drive from the new machine and build it up from scratch. After a new "out of the box" start, I decided to install LOGIC from my disks : starting with my 2007 package Logic Studio 8 and upgrading with my Logic 9 package from 2009. When trying to start to install 2008 I got the error message : Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported.
What does this mean? HOw do I get this working under 10.8.2 as it works flawlessly under OSX 10.6.8. For sure I didn't buy a new machine to have OSX 10.8.2 but I suspect this is the roadblock to installing my logic package.
    Help!

    Mark,
    Sorry...
I completely lost the thread (I actually got confused between you and another poster on a another forum that was asking the same basic question) and somehow ended up thinking you were trying to install on a PPC Mac
My apologies and please ingnore those parts of my last post relating to the PPC Macs...
You have an Intel Mac and therefore Logic Studio 2 Boxed Upgrade set should install/run on your Mac without issue. As I said earlier.. you do not need to try and install from the original Logic Studio 1 /Logic 8 Boxed set...(It won't work anyhow because you have an Intel Mac and that version had a PPC installer)  but just install from the Logic Studio 2 / Logic Pro 9 Upgrade Boxed setof DVDs instead...
Have you tried the "Make Disk Image" solution I gave earlier? That normnally works under such circumstances as what you are describing can happen when your DVD drive cannot read the DVDs correctly... I have had this situation myself where one drive read them okay and another failed to do so for whatever reason. Making and then installing from Disk images of those exact same disks resolved the issue for me...
You can try to reinstall directly from the DVDs of course though under some circumstances it may not allow you to reinstall Logic Pro itself if that part of the original installation attempt was successful... in which case you can also try this... (It's probably the easiest method if Logic 9 was already installed and present in your Apps Folder)
If the Logic Pro App is in your applications folder..
Run Software Updates to update Logic Pro to a version that will run under 10.8.2 (The initially installed version of Logic will not)
    Run Logic
Go to the menu bar in Logic and select Logic Pro/Install Additional Content and select all content in there..
This content is basically exactly the same as what is stored on the remaining DVDs of the boxed set so you might not need to use the rest of the DVDs to install from but download it all instead from Apple Servers...
