Upgrading to Superdrive?

I have the 2004 model ibook G4 14" that came with a cd-burning/dvd-rom drive. I would like to upgrade to a dvd-burning drive. Should I get an external drive (USB or firewire) or is there any way to replace my current internal drive with a superdrive which is now offered with the newer model 14"ibooks? Thanks for your help!

Hi Josh,
Yes, it is possible, but I don't think it is that wise. By installing a superdrive into your computer you are increasing the risk of problems with your iBook in the future as well as voiding any warranty that you may still have. Replacing the SuperDrive is not as easy as it looks; you basically take everything apart. I have done it to a few iBook G4s that needed their combo drive replaced, but I didn't upgrade theirs. If you want a SuperDrive that is compatible with your iBook, you should go to iFixit.com. There you can find SuperDrives (known to work with your computer) like this one. You can also get a guide on how to install it yourself (at iFixit). As I said before, I don't recommend it.
I would have to say get an external DVD+/-RW because you will be more satisfied with it. You will be able to burn a larger variety of discs with much faster speeds. If you would like any suggestions on external optical drives, let us know.
If you really want a SuperDrive installed in your computer, I suggest places like PowerBookResQ. The link that I just posted is one of the options you can buy to get your SuperDrive installed. It is a(n) 8x Super Drive Dual-Layer. It will work with your iBook G4.

Will the Software Update to 10.4.7 install firmware upgrade for a SuperDrive?
I have a Mac mini and I've just let the Software Update run as needed, but I am confused by the number of Apple update downloads listed.
I don't believe I need them, when I just use Software Update?
Seems like a simple question, but I was on Windows for the last 10 years.

  • Upgrade to SuperDrive

My eMac doesn't have a DVD burner, but I would like to make DVD backups of music and photos.
How do I go about upgrading my Combo drive to a Super drive? I currently can't even burn CDs on my Combo drive.

Is there something wrong with the combo drive as you should be able to burn CDs.
But to answer your question, yes, you can replace the combo drive with an internal superdrive. Search these boards for others experience. Here is one such example...

Alternatively you could buy an external DVD burner as well.

  • Mavericks upgrade and superdrive

Hello,  Mavericks is installed on my macbook pro 13' mi-2010 since yesterday but now my notebook don't accept any CD or DVD. Is it normal or is thare a solution. Thanks for your help. JEFF

I have posted a fix to the internal Mavericks Superdrive problem in this thread:

Pharlock, maybe the trick will work for your external Superdrive too?

I had the same problem after installing Mavericks on a late 2008 MBP.
I tried reseting NVRAPM/PRAM and SMC but that did not work.
Then I ran some drutil commands and eventually got the superdrive to wake up.
I'm not sure which command did the trick so please try running these commands from terminal in the following order.
    drutil status
    drutil info
    drutil getconfig
    drutil eject
Now try inserting a DVD.  If that doesn't work please try the above sequence with a DVD partially inserted in the drive.  I dont think that matters, but I did have a CD partially inserted when I fixed my superdrive.

  • Lion upgrade and superdrive

after loading lion the superdrive does not recognize any of my dvds even though with snow leopard there was no problem.

    To fix this problem,
    1. Open Terminal.
    2. Copy and paste this code:
    sudo rm /private/var/db/mds/system/mds.install.lock
    3. Reboot computer. (If hangs reboot again)
    4. Fixed! Enjoy!
Its an easy fix that Apple should include in their next update

  • Upgrading G5 SuperDrive

I have a dual 1.8 G5 with 1 gig of ram and it has an old 4x dvd drive. I THINK I want to upgrade the drive to a new dual layer one. Doesn't that mean I can store more on a disk? Does this new type of drive work directly with iDVD and such? Also, where do I get the media for it? I haven't seen anything on the apple store. What type of drive do I need (model #, etc)
    Thanks

  • Can I upgrade my Macbook Pro 15"  2.16 Ghz Core Duo superdrive?

Currently, my macbook pro core duo has a superdrive that does not support DVD DL burning, I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade my superdrive to a newer version that does support DVD DL burning. If so, will I need to reformat my computer and reinstall Leopard?
    Thanks in advance

I think so, at least according to ifixit:

I'm not sure if you need to update Leopard drivers with this drive.

  • Upgrade superdrive to dual-layer

i have pb g4 1,67ghz, can my pb upgrade to superdrive dl?

Apple uses Panasonic/Mashita and I think also Pioneer. The Matshita UJ-845 is one option. The Pioneer K-05 is another. The difference is that the UJ-845 (non-Apple) will read and write DVD RAM disks while the Pioneer will only read DVD RAM disks.
Apple uses firmware that prevents the Apple supplied drives to write DVD RAM disks for some reason. I currently have the Pioneer DVR K-05 insralled.
Check http://www.dfwdepot.com/dvd-ram/index.php I have used them in the past with no problems. Good prices.

  • MBP does not start upafter superdrive update

    Hi,
I just upgraded the superdrive firmware (don't remember the release) and the macbook no longer boots up. The screen is completely dark and does not react although I removed the batery and power cord.
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

    Same problem with me!
I trashed the Superdrive Updater 2.1. application from the utilities folder (beforehand made a backup and created a disk image from a folder with the application). That solved the problem.
I am very fortunate that my drive still works. Now it makes only a very short engage and disengate sound at reboot and appears to be somewhat slower.
Apple should not post firmware upgrades that do not work or are very critical. Actually I did not want to install it, I just wanted to download the updater software, but after restart the **** thing just started all by itself.
Apple definitely should fix that problem and N E VE R program a autorun at startup routine for a firmware updater!!!

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 - Will I lose any data or application?

    Hi gang,
I forgot that I have a 10.5.6 family upgrade disc. I've upgraded my kid's Mac Mini and was not sure about upgrading my MacBook Pro then.
So I'm thinking I should upgrade my MacBook Pro now but I am not sure if I will lose any data or application (and application specific information). Can you folks please clarify and/or provide best way to perform the upgrade?
I use my MacBook Pro on a daily basis from office document, browsing, audio recording and editing, video editing and photo editing that I can't imagine my MacBook Pro having a problem.
I'm also hoping that with the upgrade, my Superdrive will somehow come back to life and be useful again.
    Here's my MacBook Pro info:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
    SMC Version: 1.16f11
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled

I'm also hoping that with the upgrade, my Superdrive will somehow come back to life and be useful again.
    Unlikely.
That usually means a hardware problem. No operating system update will fix hardware problems.
I'd get it fixed by an authorized service center. If you are in the U.S. there are places that can do it cheaper if you are out of warranty:

Before doing any upgrade, backup your data*:

That way you avoid the risk of losing everything.

  • To Upgrade or Not To Upgrade (From External Hard disk to Internal Hard Disk

    Hi, need some advise here.
Currently I have a External Hard Disk (320GB) connect with my IMac with Internal Hard Disk of standard 80GB.It is ok just that have to power on/off the External Hard Disk. It is very common that I forgot to power on the External Hard Disk and my iTune library goes to other location in the Internal Hard Disk instead of follow my setting in my External Hard Disk.
So I am considering remove the standard 80GB in my IMac and change with the 320GB.Read some instruction/procedure on this to me look complicated with the thermal pad thing so now hesitating worth the risk to swap the hard dsik or just leave it as it is.
Leave it as it is or change it?
    Any advice ?

Here's a link to a take-apart guide I used a few times to replace & upgrade drives & memory in my old G4.

No it's not as easy as opening up a pc, but the key word is patience. The key thing to remember is to make sure you get some heatsink paste from your local computer store, and apply it to the areas that need it before buttoning everything back up.
It'll only take you a few hours if you work carefully. While you have it open I highly suggest upgrading your upper memory stick, as well as upgrading your superdrive. I get all my stuff here, they haven't steered me wrong yet:

  • Superdrive ejects on boot after installing 10.6.3 on MacBook

I upgraded from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 yesterday, and after this upgrade my superdrive ejects at startup, I have got C&C3 disc in there because I play it regularly and leave it in while it's turned off. I did not have this problem before and I hope I did not break my machine now.
Also, is the superdrive supposed to be making all the noise when putting in and ejecting a disc? It has done this ever since I bought it....
Can someone help me out on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

What kind of noise is it? There should be a sort of machine-like chirping sound when the disc is drawn in & then a soft whirring sound as the drive spins up the disc. After that the only additional sounds should be quiet clicks as the head assembly moves from point to point over the disc to read it.

  • SuperDrive & USB 3.0

    Hi,
Does anyone know when the Ext. Usb SuperDrive was released? And, does it support USB 3.0?
    Thanks.
    Ed

Why do you find it unbelievable? No cd/dvd drive can even come close to filling the bandwidth of usb 2, 480Mbs. So what would be the point on installing a usb 3 chip in any cd/dvd drive. The drive can't read or write data anywhere close to usb 2 speeds.
I find it unbelieveable you don't understand that.
    gordonsapsed wrote:
I simply do not understand why Apple have not 'upgraded' the Superdrive to USB 3
I asked an expert (not at the Geniius Bar) in the Apple Store if a USB 3 version would be coming shortly.
'No' said the expert 'It's unnecessary - the DVD or CD plays at a fixed speed and it would make no difference'.
I find that simply unbelieveable - and almost certainly technically irrelevant .
It may be true for simply streaming the data ( 'playing') but not for data transfer - isn't that so?
