Upgrading to tiger from panther--please help me out!!!

I have a 17" imac, running on Mac OS X 10.3.9. I bought the new ipod nano, which needs Tiger at least. I went to the Apple Store, and they told me to buy Tiger online, since the Apple store doesn't carry it anymore.
So I searched ebay and Amazon and was dismayed that it was still so expensive. The Apple store customer service guy told me it would be cheap. Well, I kept my eyes peeled for a while, and finally found it available from allmac.com through Amazon for $75. It listed the system requirements, which I met.
I got it in the mail yesterday, and was shocked to see "CPU Drop in DVD" and "not to be sold separately" on the DVD. I put it in the disc drive, and it immediately was spit out. This happened repeatedly. I checked on discussion boards about this problem and found that perhaps my superdrive needed to be updated. I tried this, and it didn't need it after all.
So, today I tried inserting the disc again. Magically my computer recognized the disc. Then I opened the disc from Finder and clicked the "install" icon. A screen popped up telling me to restart my computer, which I did. The restart took a lot longer than normal, and I noticed that there was a completely gray screen that lingered for around a minute or two. Then the "finder" icon popped up in the middle of the screen, and it continued to restart as normal. No installation procedure ever appeared.
Then I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong, so I went to my Apple Store and talked to one of their technical support guys, and he told me that the DVD I bought should not have been sold, but it should still upgrade my computer just fine.
Well, I went home, tried it countless more times, all with the same result.
I'm getting really frustrated. I don't want to be out $75, and I'd really like to start using my iPod. I run long distances, and it's the only thing that keeps me going sometimes. My old iPod no longer holds charge for more than 20 minutes (even with a 10 hr battery expansion pack I purchased), which is what got me into this mess to begin with.
IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME IN ANY WAY, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!!

Awoz,
Not sure what kind of iPod you have, but what about trying to fix the battery instead of going through all this? Some third-party services are able to put in a fresh battery for probably less than the $75 you paid for Tiger.
You could return the Nano if you're still in the return period, or sell it on eBay, or keep it just in case. Amazon will probably let you return the DVD once you explain they weren't allowed to sell it. I've returned CD and DVD disks before, so it is possible.
Tiger is great, but you don't know what other problems you may run into once you have it installed. May be easier in the long run to fix your old iPod and keep what you have, since it appears you're happy with it and it does what you need.
Just a thought. Good luck...

  • Upgrade to Tiger from panther

Can anyone help me? We have upgraded our software from Panther to Tiger and now can not log into the main account, therefore can not access any applications or email. The machine has two partitions if that has anything to do with it.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello boing:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
Partitioning an internal HD on a Mac is, IMHO, both a waste of time and potential trouble. Answer, yes it could be related. However, you did not say how you upgraded or what you used to upgrade (full retail version).
I assume you do not have a bootable backup of your previous system ( avery good procedure before any updates).
If you can provide more details, someone here may be able to help.

  • Upgrade to Tiger from Panther questions

I checked some of the old (2007) questions that are similar to mine, but they don't exactly address my questions, because of the upgrade separation of the systems in question. So I'm entering a new question that might hopefully save me some trouble.
I haven't been using my Powerbook G4 very much, lately, but I do use it occasionally for light video editing and more especially for slideshows. I like making slideshows on iMovie beter than other application I have on my other computers.
I keep reading the upgrade methodology... supposedly using the Snowleopard boxed set. The hype makes it sound as if it's capable of upgrading an Inel or PPC equipped Mac. That just sounds too good to be true, so here I am to ask for some experience based advice to make this potential change a little easier. Which disks should I purchase to make this upgrade as easy as possible?
Should I upgrade my RAM? Would an upgrade to more than the existing 512 meg be advised, or is it pretty mandatory? I am always fighting byte-bulge, as it is, so would an upgrade to a HDD larger than the existing 80 gigs be worth the extra money? Any particular size/brand to consider more than others?
My present complaint is an inability to do anything at all with the iTunes store, as most of you probably know. This wasn't so bad prior to adding Win7 machines to my network... but they seem to have completely shut out the Mac... and a Win XP machine, to boot. It's just a hassle to swap fairly large files with thumb drives.
Any upgrade advice and methods for upgrading from Panther to Tiger would be much appreciated.

Sorry, no G4 or any PPC Mac is going to be able to use Snow Leopard/10.6.x
10.5.8 is the most your G4 can use, & yes, max out the RAM.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
There are workarounds if the 867MHz is the only hangup...
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/leopardassist/
BTW, 10.3.x is Panther, 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard & not PPC compatible.

  • IChat Crashing after Upgrad to Tiger from Panther

I have recently upgraded from Panther to Tiger (10.4.4) Now when I iChat with friends, either my iChat or theirs will die. I have read some of the other posts regarding the iChat crashes and have run the iChat -7 logging command. Here is the terminal output from the crash. I would love to get any feedback on what the causes could be. I see a segmentation fault at the end, but I assume the problem occurs prior to that.
    Thanks!

    thanks jackjumper

    Welcome To  Discussions jackjumper!
If the Mac G4 meets the Tiger System Requirements, as Roger Wilmut1 posted, you must purchase a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD.
The discs must look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger Using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.
There is also a version available on CDs, at FastMac, for $179.99.
Once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

    See options below:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

    Hi Venkata from NZ,
If you are having an issue with the speaker on your iPhone, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • WHEN I USED TO CONNECT INTERNET FROM MY IPHONE 4S PERSONAL HOTSPOT VIA USB, AN ICON IN THE NETWORK PREFERENCE NAMED "IPHONE" GETS OPENED.... BUT NOW THIS IS NOT HAPPENING AND I AM NOT ABLE TO CONNECCT PERSONAL HOTSPOT VIA USB CABLE. PLEASE HELP ME OUT

WHEN I USED TO CONNECT INTERNET FROM MY IPHONE 4S PERSONAL HOTSPOT VIA USB, AN ICON IN THE NETWORK PREFERENCE NAMED "IPHONE" APPEARS.... BUT NOW THIS IS NOT HAPPENING AND I AM NOT ABLE TO CONNECT PERSONAL HOTSPOT VIA USB CABLE. PLEASE HELP ME OUT???

Please don't shout!   Using all uppercase means shouting on the internet.  If your keyboard is stuck please say so, otherwise people will think you are being obnoxious.
Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet?   Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network?  Or do you have other options?

  • HT1689 i have my daughters iphone 3, i want to use it as an i-pod, but it keeps receiving messages from some her friends is there a way to stop this from happening, please help, my phone is maxed out and would really like the storage for music, thanks

i have my daughters iphone 3, i want to use it as an i-pod, but it keeps receiving messages from some her friends is there a way to stop this from happening, please help, my phone is maxed out and would really like the storage for music, thanks

It sounds like it still has her information on it, so it might be efficient to navigate to Settings, then General, then Reset, then Erase All Content and Settings. You can then set up the phone again, using your information. This way the phone will be yours, officially, and her data and information will be removed.

  • I accidentally removed iphoto from dock, please help?

I accidentally removed iphoto from dock, please help?
iPhoto isn't in my applications to I can't drag it to dock.  All images and movies are still on Mac (heart did stop as I thought I'd lost everything and nearly cried) but I don't know how to get iPhoto back.  I'm worried about trying different things as don't want to lose anything on Mac.  Noticed that I haven't been using Time Machine and bought a couple of years ago so not sure what operating with.  I have our 2 CDs from when we bought the Mac - 13-inch Macbook Pro (Mac OS X Install DVD) and 13 inch MacBook Pro (Applications Install DVD).  My photos are not backed up so not sure if I need to do this first - can I back up to iCLoud or do I need newer software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - need lots of step by step instructions though!

All images and movies are still on Mac
Of course they are.  Deleting an app doesn't delete the files that's in it.

  • HT4623 After i updated my iPhone i realized i do not have my camera anymore how to get it back? I also using a new notebook so I do not have a back up to transfer it from.  Please help

After i updated my iPhone i realized i do not have my camera anymore how to get it back? I also using a new notebook so I do not have a back up to transfer it from.  Please help

I'm assuming you mean you don't have your camera application (which is not saved on any backup anyway).
One way to find it is to get to your home screen, swipe the screen from right to left, and type "Camera" in the search field.  Camera is a core Apple app and cannot be deleted, so it must be there somewhere.
An alternate approach is to do Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout
