Upgrading to Tiger - HDD Space and others

I am finally upgrading to tiger today. I have a few questions though:
Are there options you can select to reduce the amount of space the install will use up, is the 3GB listed by Apple an accurate estimate?
Are there any settings, files, apps that really won't be saved in the upgrade and need backing up before hand?
Are there any other things I should do before upgrading?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Robin.
Yes there are options by selecting customize.
Unless you need localization files for other languages installed, deselect all but English which will save about 200 MB of hard drive space and the same for Printer drivers.
You can deselect installing any printer drivers you don't need.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301175
Regarding the amount of hard drive space needed for the installation, it depends on your installation choice.
Simple Upgrade
Archive & Install
Erase & Install
If you use Simple Upgrade, all system components and Apple applications will be upgraded to the Tiger version. All user and network settings, user data and 3rd party applications are retained.
If you use Archive & Install (selecting preserve user and network settings), the Tiger OS is installed completely new and the old OS is archived and saved as a previous system folder. All user and network settings, user data and most 3rd party applications and settings will be transferred to the new system. If some data or settings are missing, you have access to it in the archived previous system folder. You cannot boot the computer from the archived previous system folder and after confirming all user and network settings, user data and 3rd party application settings were successfully transferred to the new system, you can (and should) safely delete the archived previous system folder.
If you use the Erase & Install method, the hard drive will be completely erased first and the Tiger OS and included applications on the Tiger install disc will be installed only.
Regardless the install method chosen, your very first step should be creating a backup of all important data before installing a major OS Upgrade such as Tiger.
I use a backup utility called SuperDuper! which creates a complete bootable clone of my hard drive saved to a Firewire drive.
These are the steps I take in order before installing a major OS Upgrade such as Tiger.
Update my bootable clone backup.
Disconnect all external peripheral devices except for a keyboard and mouse.
Boot from the Tiger install disc and after selecting the language, at the next screen navigate to Disk Utility via the installer menu bar and run Disk First Aid repair on the hard drive. If any problems are reported and successfully repaired, run repair again until no problems are reported. Quit Disk Utility and the focus returns to the installer.
I don't recall the order but I believe you choose the install type and then customize the installation.
I prefer and have always used the Archive & Install method and if you use this method, be sure to select preserve user and network settings.
Customize the installation by deselecting any and all language localization files you do not need and the same for printer drivers.
Within 30 minutes or so, you should be up and running.
If you currently have limited free hard drive space or if this is a concern, check Problems from Insufficient RAM and Free Hard Disk Space before installing Tiger.

I have upgraded from tiger to leopard and seem to have lost Photoshop 7.0. Is it possible to retrieve it

Photoshop 7.0 only goes as far as 10.4.11
If you have a drive, you can put 10.4.11 on it or a partition of it
    and save some money.
I am not convinced the upgrade is worth it,
but I just do simple things.

Can a Mac Pro (2.66 ghz duel core (4cores)) be upgradable to support Thunderbolt displays and other devices. Does this need to be done through the Graphics card expansion or a additional card to be inserted?

No. There is no way to upgrade any Mac Pro older then the cylindrical 2013 Mac Pro to ThunderBolt.
The requirements of Thunderbolt require a totally redesigned motherboard and chip set rather any plugin cards. These motherboard were never developed for older Mac Pros.

though I have sufficent memory space, and other internet based functions are running...

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

However, since it works with other networks that really suggests a problem with your network.

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • Upgrading MacBook Tiger to SL and iLife 09

I currently have a MacBook running Tiger and I also have the Family pack of iLife 09. What is the correct procedure for upgrading Tiger to SL and iLife 09? It is not clear to me that I can upgrade to SL with out using the Box Set?

If you don't need iLife '09 and iWork '09, the least expensive route from Tiger to Snow Leopard is to buy a copy of Leopard and the Snow Leopard upgrade from a dealer. Amazon has Leopard for $95.99 and the Snow Leopard upgrade for $25.00. That's cheaper than the $149.99 Amazon sells the Box Set for, though the Box Set would be a better deal if you want iWork even though you already have iLife.
    Regards.

  • Â shows up on a published ftp site instead of 2 spaces-and other characters

Hope this is an easy one I missed some how.
I have iWeb '08(2.0.4) and need to publish to a unix server through FTP.
So I publish to a folder and then ftp to my web site.
When I do this I get  when I should be getting 2 spaces. Which happens after every sentence. The only thing I can think of that is working it to just use single spaces instead of 2. Though that looks kind of wierd for paragraphs.
Any ideas? I have already made sure the html files are going up as ascii. But I tried binary just for laughs.. didn't work either.
Though if I look at the web site with Safari on the local harddrive it works fine. Though looking at it through "vi" I see ?| inbetween my sentences. Though one space has no unusual characters.
Could it be iWeb is not outputting standard ASCII?
    Thanks for any ideas...
Other than using single space between sentences....

  • Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and Finder is not responding

I just upgraded to Leopard on my 15" Powerbook G4 and everything seems to work fine, except the Finder. If I go to Force quit it says it isn't responding and no matter what I do I can't get a finder window. I tried to do the fix in terminal where you remove the divxnetworks file, but it didn't work. It said the file didn't exist. Any ideas?

Did you do upgrade or archive and install. I had a similar problem on an non intel iMac after an upgrade and doing an archive and install seemed to help. (I ended up with some weird permissions problems but I think that was unrelated to the archive and install.)

  • Want to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and have questions...

I recently purchased an Airport extreme after my previous router/wifi unit went up in smoke. Had to use the PC with XP to set it up as the iMac has 10.4.11 and I supposedly need 10.5.x to setup the airport with the iMac. From reading the upgrade specs and system requirements, it appears I have no issue upgrading... just have to find a copy of Leopard. There in lies my question, as copies are no longer available from Apple (per what I was told at the store, and don't see them on the web), if I buy a copy off ebay or Craig's list, unless I can find a brand new sealed box.... do I take the chance of buying a copy that somebody installed, and now the serial number is registered and therefore is no good anymore? How does that work, is the serial number of the software registered to the machine serial number and once used, the disk is worthless on another computer? I realize that there are "family" copies and developer copies with what, 5 licenses and unlimited? What about the standard "retail" package, once it's installed it's worthless to anybody but the person that originally used it?

There is no serial numbering/registration. This is not Windows. You are on your honor.
You always take a chance purchasing from eBay and Craig's List in as much as most of these sellers do not know what they are selling and/or miss-represent the item. Can't tell you how many folks come here trying to install an OS unsuccessfully only to find out that they bought a machine specific OS version that the seller swore would work on their Mac.

  • Upgrading from Tiger to Leopard on and external (FireWire) drive...

    Hi all,
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed somewhere on the www but after several hours of research, I'm embarrassed to admit I'm ready to call it quits (unless someone more tech savvy than I can help <:o)
I've been running my OS on a WD 500GB FireWire for the past couple of years. Switched to it shortly after realizing that the 80GB HD on my MacBook was insufficient for my needs.
Now I'm getting ready to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard and I've got some issues. Most importantly, when I launch the installer and it requires me to restart my system, I do so through both methods (holding down the "option" key to start up using the external HD and also by just allowing a normal boot under the old drive). In neither situation do I ever get the option to select where I'd like to install the new OS. In fact, when I allow the normal start without the "option" key being pressed, I don't even get to see the option to begin an installation. When I hold down the "option" key, I get the Mac OS X Install DVD screen (directory on the DVD), but it never gets to the point where I can start the installation.
I'm at a loss and getting a little frustrated (which has been my problem since I started with Macs--been a long time PC user and I'm always looking for the difficult way of doing things--so I'm probably just being PC-stupid as usual >;o)
Any assistance with getting me on the path to continued righteousness would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance!
    Ali T. Borahan
    http://www.alisails.com
PS: Despite the fact that I'm PC-literate and Mac-stupid, I've managed to convince almost a dozen people to switch to Mac, simply because I'm hooked and love how the Mac community sticks together and helps one another (and also because I can't stand the Microsoft kingdom!!! <:o)

Insert the Leopard DVD in the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the dark gray Apple logo appears on the screen. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.
When the menubar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your startup drive's entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Continue with the installation process until you reach the point where you must select a Target drive. Select your Target drive then click on the Options button in the lower left corner of the dialog.
Select the Archive and Install option.
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
Your target drive must have repaired OK when you repaired it. Otherwise do not continue.
You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Is it possible to upgrade from Tiger (10.4) to Leopard (10.5)? Thanks

Wondering if I can upgrade from TIger to Leopard (and then to Lion) on my old Macbook. Don't really want to buy a new notebook when this one works fine. But would like to use some of the features available through Lion (notably iCloud). Thanks.

    Hello Judy,
You'd want to skip Leopard/10.5.x totally as it's not needed & expensive since Apple no longer sells it & it was $129.
You can get Snow Leopard/10.6 for $29, then once updated to 10.6.6 or greater buy Lion/10.7 from the App Store, as long as your MacBook meets the requiremenys...
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
