Upgrading to Tiger, Logic Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Etc

Hi,
Between me and Santa, it's been a really great Mac Christmas but I have some questions that I couldn't really find exact answers for by searching the forums.
I'm currently running OS 10.3.9 with Logic Express, Garageband (original) and Soundtrack (original). I'm about to upgrade to Tiger and have iLife 05 (with Garageband 2) here with upgrades to both Logic & Soundtrack Pro on the way.
I've decided to do an erase and install when I upgrade to Tiger just to wipe the slate clean (too many tried and abandoned freewares and demos!), but I'm a little confused about the best way to install all the new audio apps:
1) Since I'm UPGRADING to Logic Pro and Soundtrack Pro, is it necessary for me to have Logic Express and the original Soundtrack installed before installing the upgrades, or will these install fine just by referencing my original activation codes or whatever?
2) Would you recommend that I install Garageband 2 from the iLife 05 disc? I know there's a lot of redundancy, but it seems some posts here implied having GB2 installed was necessary for LP to work to its fullest (EXS instruments, Jam Packs etc)...I'm hoping I won't need to install GB2.
3) Since STP comes with many of the same effects & loops as LP, is there anything I should consider doing to streamline the install or save disc space and avoid too much duplication?
4) I'm sure I'll need to install the latest Pro Application Support releases. Should I do that after installing LP & STP or before? Does it matter?
5) Finally, and I suppose this might be more appropriate on a different forum, but while I have you here: this G5 is my main computer for my .Mac account (we have a few other Macs in the house). Do I need to take any steps like deauthorizing or anything to make the transition smooth?
Thanks for any help, suggestions or recommendations! Looking forward to finally being current....

Thanks again, Justin. Had some issues...after installing Logic and moving on to the Content disc, the Installer for the Logic Pro Bonus Sounds kept quitting each time I tried to run it. Updated Logic to 7.1.1 and it was able to install, but it took about an hour. When I tried to drag the tutorial folder to my hard drive, it said it would take approximately 33 hours to copy the 500MB file! Weird.
Also, before updating to 7.1.1, I tried launching Logic and it held for over an hour while Scanning Audio Units on: (19/21) AuAudioFilePlayer. Did a Force Quit on the Auval(?), which was not responding, and Logic opened fine, and has since. Don't know if this might not bode well for the future though.
Biggest Problem: Looking at the Loop Browser, I'm only seeing Garageband Loops from the drop-down menu. With Express, I could see other Sub-Groups besides GB Loops. I've installed Soundtrack Pro, and I know it's missing those as well because the "Vocal" tab is greyed out and, being sure there are some vocal loops in STP, I dragged the HD/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro onto the Loop Browser and it seems to have indexed them as at least now the "Vocal" tab has loops in it.
However, I'm still not seeing "Soundtrack Pro Loops" or anything new in the drop-down menu - which was always handy to access specific loop sets such as ones I installed on my own. I'm just worried that I'm not getting access to the Loops that came with Logic Pro! Any thoughts?
Thanks so much for your help ~Knight (presto211)

  • APPLE: We Need An Upgrade Price for Logic Pro X!!!

There has always been an Upgrade path for Logic Pro. Where is it???

I've been using Logic since it was Notator 2.5 as well, upgrading every time, and I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with their being no upgrade price.
    Reasons?
    1. Even at the full price, Logic X is cheaper than any ProTools upgrade price.
    2. It is a ridiculously powerful piece of software which can do things I was only dreaming of being able to do 20 years ago. Frankly I think $200/£139 is astonishingly good value for what it can do.
Perhaps people should stop convincing themselves that software manufacturers somehow 'owe them'  just because they're long-term users? Apple has delivered a  piece of professional level software at a remarkable price - for that I'm actually pretty thankful!
Nobody ever said doing professional quality audio was cheap.

  • Is there any upgrade program from logic pro 9 to X?

I own two licences for Logic Pro 9 and I am curious if Apple offers any kind of upgrade program for current users?

No upgrade programme available. based on price v competition chances are tthere never will be.

  • THIS is why there is no upgrade price for Logic Pro X

Because it's time for people stop stop convincing themselves that software manufacturers somehow 'owe them', just because they've used previous versions.
I've been using Logic in its various forms since 1995 - that's 18 years, kids - upgrading every time, and I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with their being no upgrade price.
    Reasons?
    1. At the full price, Logic X is markedly cheaper than any ProTools upgrade.
    2. It is a very powerful piece of software which can do things I could only dream of being able to do - or afford to do - for many, many years.*
Apple has delivered a piece of powerful, professional level audio production software at the remarkable price of just $200/£139.
Just two days ago people were grizzling about "We haven't seen an upgrade to Logic for years. Has Apple forgotten about it?" Well here it is. And you're still moaning!
Nobody ever said doing professional quality audio was cheap, so for goodness sake let's stop the pathetic 'world owes me a living' snivelling.
If you think it's too much, take up knitting, train spotting/railfanning or something.
No connection with Apple, just a longterm user who  remembers 'the bad old days' only too well and hates the constant whinging about everything!!
    * How many of the moaners actually remember splicing tape or endless analogue bounces to get just 16 or 20 tracks, noticeably losing quality every time?

    Dave Woof wrote:
Absolutely - I've posted the text below in a couple of other threads, but it serves to reinforce your point....
The full price of Logic Pro was reduced during the life of Logic Pro 9 to be only a fraction of the original price.  Thus, the full price today is still cheaper than the old model for upgrade prices.  Net result - just buying the new version when one comes out (e.g. Logic Pro X) costs about the same, if not less than upgrades did in the past, but with the added bonus that if you're a new customer, you pay a far cheaper price first time round.
    Everyone's a winner!
Logic Pro used to cost... $999  After Apple purchased it the price was reduced to $499, once it moved to the App Store the price was reduced to 1/5th of it's original cost at $199... so yes, stop the silly complaining.
I've invested thousands in Logic over the years.
However, I can look at it from a different perspective:
The price whining is a natural development from Apple removing the copy protection, reducing the price and promoting Logic as and upgrade to Garageband. You now have a whole new group of users, many who have never used a DAW and have little respect for the development of this software through the years or the things we used to do as engineers/musicians.... To amateurs the $199 upgrade price is ridiculously expensive to the "entitled" attitudes prevalent today. The fact that Apple isn't offering this upgrade at $50 is reason for storming the gates.
So, place the blame for the whining not so much on the users but on Apple for setting up the conditions that made it possible.

  • Is there an upgrade path from Logic Pro 9 to Logic Pro X?

I convinced a friend to purchase Logic Pro 9, not knowing version X was about to be released 3 weeks later.   Even though upgrade path always crosses my mind prior to a software purchase, I was not worried - this was Apple.  Now it's looking like there's not a built-in upgrade path at all (as there IS with just about every other software company I have bought from).  Is this for real?  This friend has version 9, and I have version X.  So this friend learned everything there is to know about version 9, then I bought version X not even knowing we were out of synch on versions.   We were hoping to work on songwriting together, but paying $200 again is out of the question.  I notice that the file save under version X has extension .logicx, so is it even possible to exchange files?

my friend with Logic Pro 9 can send files to me but they cannot accept files created with Logic Pro X.
Which is exactly what i said earlier....
You can open Logic Pro 9 projects in LPX but not the other way around.
Apple wouldn't even give me a refund on Logic Pro X (purchased just 3 days ago), which is useless to me now.
There are no refunds from the App Store... That is what you agreed to when you purchased a license for LPX.
Your choice is simply for your friend to update to Logic Pro X or use the audio stem process I outlined earlier (Not something i would recommend doing for any period of time)... or spend even more money on purchasing two copies of a different DAW...  and taking the time to learn them and spending time converting over what your friend has already created... and hope your friend hasn't been using the internal plugins found only in Logic Pro... otherwise you have even more work to do...
The reality is, the sensible solution is simply to upgrade LP9 to LPX for $200... (and think of it as the upgrade price even though you can buy the full version for the same amount but that really doesn't matter does it?) Less outlay, less time lost and less hassle, but as always the choice is yours...
I have never, EVER, encountered a software company that treated customers that way.
Then you haven't been in the computer business that long......
Seriously though, you haven't been treated that badly...
You bought LPX at a price that is basically a steal.... and your friend bought LP9 at the same 'deal' of a price.. compared to what Logic Pro used to cost ($1000)
You can 'upgrade' from LP9 to LPX for $200 which is much cheaper than it used to cost to upgrade from , say LP8 to LP9... and the same price as it cost to upgrade to LP9 via the App Storeprior to the release of LPX
The alternatives at this stage would cost you much more money......time.. and hassle..
The only things that truly frustrating is the timing of your friend's purchase of LP9... For that he has my sympathies but it happens... Some people who bought Logic Pro 9 within a month of Logic Pro X being released were given refunds on the LP9 purchase if they bought LPX... Your friend just left it way too late.... Apple has since stopped such refunds.... and you didn't do the research you should have done before you jumped in and bought LPX... Unfortunate but sadly true.
Again, you and your friend have my sympathies for whatever they are worth... but at least the obvious solution is still cheap compared to what the alternatives could cost you now and in the past!

  • After upgrading to Lion Logic Pro 9 is not working right

I have no idea what is going on, I was working on a project this evening, did a bunch of work as a matter of fact, I always hit save after every litte bit of work I do, it's a force of habit now.
When I go to re-open my project I get some kind of error message that Logic can't open my file. I close out of that and open project again, this time it opens but it was the project before all the work that I had recently done. Anybody have any idea what could have happened and how can I possibly restore the work that I had done.
Even since I upgraded to Lion, Logic has not been working the same, everything time I open it, it opens 2 instances of the project I'm working on, what is that about?

There are apparently a lot of problems with Logic 9 and Lion. A lot of Logic users don't go to a new system at least for several months after it comes out, or until the X.1 version comes out. I go to this site a lot for help with Logic.
    www.logicprohelp.com
They are very knowledgeable and helpful. I've seen quite a few threads about Lion, but haven't read many of them, since I'm staying away for a while.

  • Want to upgrade Logic experss 8 to the Logic pro 9

    Hi all,
I want to upgrade Logic experss 8 to the Logic pro 9. Please guide me which products i have to get it looks like quite confusing now.
All i find over web is Logic pro 9 is available for 199 and no upgrade options on any other site like musicians friend and sweetwater.
    Thanks,
    ZB

As far as I can see that is your option . The upgrade when it existed was 199.99 so I guess there is that .
I'm more curious on going forward how or if they are going to do upgrade pricing for Logic Pro ?
There is as far as I know no precedence for upgrade pricing in the app store , but I could maybe see them realize an otherwise useless update before V10 that had buying the upgrade as an in app purchase ?
It would be very nice if Apple would get with the times and Let it's users know what is going on ...to my knowledge they have still have not made even an official announcement of Express being discontinued even …which is shady .

  • Can't upgrade logic pro in Lion

After installing Lion I can't upgrade the not working Logic Pro 9.1.1 to 9.1.4.
First to upgrade from 9.02 to 9.1.1 fails because I get the message: 'your computer does not need this update'.
Then to upgrade from 9.02 to 9.14 fails because I got the memessage: 'an eligible Logic Pro version was not found in The Application folder. This update requires Logic Pro version 9.0 or higher'.
What can I do. I don't want to go back from Lion to Leopord Snow to solve thiis upgrade issue in Logic Pro. This must be known bye Apple! It is their own Pro application!

Fantastic, it worked that way without any problem. I just skipped the numbers (9.0.2) after the name LOGIC PRO in the application folder.
CCTM, thank you very much for the solution.

  • Logic pro won't install on macbook pro

I have Logic Studio 9.1.5 working on my iMac i7 under OS X 6.8.  It is an upgrade of an upgrade, etc going back to V 5.5.  I have the original Emagic key from Logic 5.5.  My recollection is that I had to use this to install the Logic Studio upgrade to get Logic Pro 8, but that when I upgraded to V9, the key was not necessary.
I'll be visiting some remote sites for recording later this fall, and decided to move Logic to my MacBook Pro for the trip. It came with Lion.  I installed the minimal setup from the Logic Studio package to get Logic Pro 9 on the MBP. It asked me for the serial number and to insert the EMagic key at the start of the install process.  Once installed, it would not launch under Lion so I installed the 9.1.5 update.  When I tried to launch after this update, Logic started up, but I was asked for the serial number and Emagic key again.  This time, it reported that my key is not elegible for this upgrade.  Makes no sense, given I had this running with no probllem on the iMac.
Have there been any other steps required to install under Lion?  Is there anything else anyone can suggest to look into?

Samuel, this won't help you, but it may help some others.
I had CS2 installed on my good old TiBook 400MHz, and it worked fine there. When I got my new MBP C2D 2.33 yesterday, I followed the instructions for connecting via FireWire, and after 2 hours, everything copied over just fine. So far, everything works fine too, which is really amazing to me, including the Adobe CS2 applications.
I did make sure that my old TiBook was up-to-date, and ran Mac Janitor on it, and fixed permissions. That may have made the difference.
The only things which don't run now are the old OS9 applications, and Final Cut Express 3.0 (but there is a work-around using the esc key).
Hope this is encouraging to someone who is thinking about gettig a MBP C2D.

  • Logic Pro 9.1.8 keeps crashing

Hi everyone, my copy of Logic Pro keeps crashing. It loads for a few seconds and then crashes with an error message.
    Sometimes this:
    Crashed Thread:  7  com.apple.audio.IOThread.client
    and other times this:
    Crashed Thread:  20  com.apple.appkit-heartbeat
I've tried forums and also phoned Apple support, who pointed me towards these:
    Hi Chris,
Here is the main troubleshooting page for Logic:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2375
The default location for MIDI drivers is Macintosh HD ▸ Library ▸ Audio ▸ MIDI Drivers
    This is mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4612
If it was an issue with plug ins or audio units there are located /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT201199
None of the above has helped.
Also In my HD>Library>Preferences  folder there are no com.logic.pro  etc files to remove? Which is recommended in one of the threads.
It was running fine until the other day. The most notable change is that I installed/started using an Alesis Vortex Wireless with their Vysex Editor.
Although removing this and all AU plugins/drivers/re-wire etc and doing all the recommended steps in the above threads has not helped.
I am using a 2012 Mac Mini i7 with Mountain Lion everything is up to date. I have tried removing and re installing Logic.
Mainstage, Reason and Cubase are working.
Please help! I seem to be out of options so far and have valuable clients whose work I need to finish!
    Many thanks,
    Chris

Also In my HD>Library>Preferences  folder there are no com.logic.pro  etc files to remove? Which is recommended in one of the threads.
You are not looking in the correct library...... You need to look in the User Library not the System Library.....
Follow the instructions exactly as described....
Make sure Logic is not running and then.........
    Delete the User Preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro back to its original settings. This will not impact your song files. To reset your Logic Pro user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic.pro.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
If you have upgraded from Logic Pro 7, you may also need to remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
Restart your Mac and then test......

  • Logic Pro 7 And NODES - Do the versions of OS X have to match?

    Hello,
I tried installing, off the logic pro 7.2 installation disk, the Node on my 10.3.9 ibook. My main computer has 10.4.5.
My question, can I run logic as a node on my ibook without upgrading to 10.4?
    Thanks,

PS I still have my logic 7.0 install disk.

Hi, I forgot to mention that the node from the 7.2 disk was unable to be installed due to me not having Tiger.
Is there a way to use a 10.3.9 computer as a node for a Tiger & Logic Pro 7.2 computer?

Also is there a way for me to upgrade it to Logic Pro X?

Forget Logic Pro 8 on your new macbook, it will not work. The "upgrade" to LPX will cost you around 200 bucks and can be acquired  via the App Store.
