Upgrading to Unibody

Is it possible to upgrade a white Macbook (2007) to a unibody macbook, either the white or the aluminum? Is this something Apple offers?

Apple doesn't really do upgrades that way. You can use this recycling program to get some money back on a gift card that you can then apply to a new Mac:

  • Upgrading a Unibody Aluminium Macbook from 10.6.8 to ?

    Hi
Id like to upgrade one of my older macs, but im not sure what I can upgrade to.
Im not sure what year it is - its the rareish unibody macbook (aluminium) which looks exactly the same as a Macbook pro 13.
    Specs are:-
    10.6.8
    2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2gb 1067 MHz DDR3
What would be the latest osx I can upgrade to?...and how would I go about it (ie do I need to first install another update)
    many thanks
    Paul

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7. Regardless of what the maximum OS for your computer is, you should install more RAM in it before proceeding.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • After upgrading to Aperture 3.4.1 (and really since 3.4), aperture becomes unresponsive almost immediately after I open it.  It tears through over 1GB of memory within a minute, and I am forced to either force quit or open the terminal and "killall".

How do I fix this issue?  I haven't been able to use Aperture or load new photos into Aperture for weeks.  Since upgrading to Aperture 3, from Aperture 2; I've noticed that Aperture 3 is a major memory hog.  I had to upgrade my unibody macbook to keep up with Aperture, otherwise my whole system become unresponsive when trying to simply look at my photos.  I have about 15,000 pictures in my library, but the program is designed to organize large libraries.  Why has it been so buggy the past year?  Should I just jump ship and go to Lightroom?
    Thanks

    Matt,
it is normal, that after a crash a library repair is required. Aperture is a database, and if a crash happens, transactions may not be completed, so the library may be left in an inconsitent state. Usually the built-in repair methods can take care of this. But I assume, you have a backup of your Aperture library. If not, now would be the time to create one, just in case.
I doubt, Aperture is causing this crashes - it may be a coincidence; kernel panics quite often are due to an overfull hard disk, incompatible frameworks or kernel extensions, or to failing hardware. Run a hardware check, check the available disk space and file system with disk utility, and try to remember, if you installed anything else lately, that might have added incompatible kernel extensions. Turn off any helper apps, start up items.
Your kernel panic occurs when accessing the graphics card. Sometimes this can be resolved by booting into safe mode, this will disable advanced features and reset the card. Note: Aperture will not run in safe boot mode, see
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Browse MacBook forum and Mt. Lion forum, to see, if anybody else has problems with Mt. Lion and your particular Hardware configuration and card.
As a last measure reinstall your MacOS. You may also have a look at Thomas' Tech Corner » Understanding upgrade nightmares

  • The iPhone cannot be synced. An unknown error occurrred (-50)

I upgraded my unibody macbook to OSX Lion, iPhoto to '11 from '09 and iTunes to 10.4. Now, my iPhoto library no longer syncs with my iPhone. It gives error "The iPhone cannot be synced. An unknown error occurrred (-50)".
    Any ideas why?

Okay, I looked at the MAC log and found that a daemon was busying up iTunes and my system in excess. The cause was RIM software to support my daughters blackberry. Since she now has the software on her laptop, I deleted mine and that fixed that problem.
Researching other entries in the log pertaining to iTunes, I found that esentually iTunes 10.7 is basically broke. With iTunes 11.0 coming very soon, Apple will not want to worry about any bugs with 10.7.
Consequently, we have to just wait and hope that the iTunes version will be better.

  • Audio Gone!

    Hi,
I just got a Unibody 13.3" 2.53 MacBook Pro (upgraded from Unibody 13.3" 2.4 MacBook).
I used the boot disk from the old MB and all was fine until I updated to the iLife shipped with this new MBP and then did Apple Software Update this evening (quite a few updates).
(I get the startup bong sound - and I can boot off a clean MacOS install and audio works ok.)
But from the broken system I get the following error:
    Jul 26 20:30:42 MacBook kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 == pathMap_aDriverInstance" failed in "/SourceCache/AppleHDA/AppleHDA-168.1.3/AppleHDA/AppleHDADriver.cpp" at line 1428 goto Exit
    Jul 26 20:30:43 MacBook kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != createAudioEngines ( fPathMap_aDriverInstance )" failed in "/SourceCache/AppleHDA/AppleHDA-168.1.3/AppleHDA/AppleHDADriver.cpp" at line 130 goto Exit
The errors started directly after a reboot request by the system during the updating.
The sound control panel shows "No ??put device found"
In the broken system, I get no sound icon on the menu bar and volume buttons just show the speaker icon and a little circle with the diagonal line through it.
I have a time machine backup from last night so I won't lose any data by re-installing, but this problem shouldn't require a re-install.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

    Hi,

No, I took the HARD disk from my old MacBook and attached it to my new MacBook Pro.
It looks like something has killed "CoreAudio".
(I have zapped the PRAM - to no avail)
Well, that's different but almost the same. The original HD most likely has all the wrong driver on it for the new Mac.
You should have put the old HD in a USB case or left it in the old computer and then migrated the data onto the new computer. That way, the new drivers would be installed. What you did is trying to force all the old drivers on the new hardware which seems to be the problem.
You might consider cloning the drive and then doing an Archive & Install, which should replace only the OS with the proper one, leaving all your apps, etc. alone. Again, I would not do this without a backup.

  • Hitachi vs. Segate vs. WD Scorpio

    Hello,
I'm about to upgrade my Unibody Macbook Pro (late 2008) with a brand new 500 GB HD - 7200 RPM. I have been searching for an answer but people are "always" a fan of something.
Anyway, I'm considering these following Drives:
    1- Seagate Momentus 7200 500GB 7200RPM
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?linkcode=ur2&camp=1789&tag=macrumors-20&creative=9325&path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.c om%2FSeagate-Momentus-7200RPM-Internal-ST9500420AS-Bare%2Fdp%2FB001R4BBLU%2Fref% 3Dsr_17%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Delectronics%26qid%3D1269978037%26sr%3D8-7
    2- Hitachi 500GB Travelstar SATA 7200
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?linkcode=ur2&camp=1789&tag=macrumors-20&creative=9325&path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.c om%2FHitachi-Travelstar-Internal-HD20500IDK-7K%2Fdp%2FB002FYJQB8%2Fref%3Ddp_cp_o b_e_title2%3Fie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1269970419%26sr%3D8-1-fkmr1
3- WD Scorpio Blue ( Although it's 5400 RPM huge number of people recommended it)
    http://wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=803
So, I'd like to share your experiences with each of the ones above, in order to be sure while placing my next order
    Thanks,
    Rashid

I would choose Seagate or Hitachi. I think I would lean more to the Hitachi drives right now.

  • ITunes 8 video breaks screensaver

I upgraded my unibody 2.4ghz macbook to Snow Leopard over the weekend and so far so good. I've come across my second issue with the new OS (the first is wonky Expose behavior while using 4-finger swipes). I have Expose set up so moving the mouse cursor into the bottom left corner of the screen activates the screen saver. When watching a video in iTunes 8, if I try to activate the screensaver by moving the mouse into the corner, the screensaver comes on for a few seconds and then turns off. I am not touching the macbook when this happens. I cant tell if this is a problem with snow leopard or if its a bug in iTunes 8 (though this worked perfectly for me before the upgrade, so I have to assume its a snow leopard problem). Has anyone else observed this behavior?

Since posting this I've tested this behavior on multiple macs running snow leopard in both iTunes 8 and 9 and all of them have displayed the same behavior. its not a huge deal or anything (I can always just minimize iTunes) Just thought I would throw it out there.

  • Migration Assistant fails, what to do now?

so, I was trying to upgrade pre unibody 15" MBP to a new UB MBP 13" last night. 10.6.3 to 10.6.5. I was using ethernet.
Everything seemed to be going fine, but after about 1.5 hours it just came to a dead stop for several hours. I had to disconnect since I had work to do.
Now, I don't know how best to proceed? Is there going to be some massive file corruption on the new target device? Is there a way to start the process over again? Should one actually do a CLEAN install now again on the target device so that the HD is not filled up with double the stuff?
    Thanks for any guidance.

First using Ethernet isn't the best choice that connection tends to be unreliable. Because you aborted the process you may have damaged the install that is on the new machine so you will need to re-install and then using a Firewire connection use the Setup Assistant to migrate your data, files and applications. If you old MBP doesn't have FW 800 then use a cable like this one, a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 cable. I would recommend reformatting the internal HD using Disk Utility on Install Disc, remember to set the format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once that has been done then you can let OS X install.
After you have migrated you will need to run Software Update to get the most up to date software for your computer and also use the Application Install Disc that came with the new machine to install iLife.

  • Move Internal Drive to USB Enclosure? Interface?

I upgraded my unibody to a 500 GB drive and want to put the previous 320 GB into a USB enclosure. I purchased a laptop 2.5" HDD enclosure with Serial ATA connectors on the inside and a USB 2 connector on the outside. But the hard drive I pulled out of the Macbook Pro has weird chip connectors. What type of connector is this and why is it listed as an SATA drive when it doesn't have SATA connectors? The System Profile listed it as a standard SATA drive. I'm a bit confused as to what kind of enclosure I need to get now.

Derek, where did you buy your enclosure, and, considering the mixup, would you recommend them? I'm considering a SSD, and should I buy one, I'd like to place my current drive in an external enclosure for backup purposes, etc.
    Thanks!

  • Upgrade Macbook Late 2008 Unibody Hard Drive SSD or size?

I have a late 2008 macbook aluminum unibody..........it currently only has the standard 160 GB...and I'm at about 152 GB. I need to upgrade (already upgraded from 2GB RAM to 8GB), but now I need the bigger hard drive. My friend is telling me how great a SSD would be, but I can obviously get a much bigger drive if iI do a standard or hybrid. Please let me know if I should spend $$$$$$$ on SSD...or on Hybrid.........or if I should just get a regular HD?
More info: I'm a firefighter, who is a mortgage originator as a side job. I have NO INTEREST in PC's.......but for my Mortgage side job- I need to have a windows based option. at 152/160 GB used; 8 GB RAM - it is 'fast enough'. Any suggestions as to what type of HD I should get for this old boy? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

Get a regular HDD for  your computer. It should be a notebook sized drive, SATA II-3.0 Gb/s, 7200 RPM. A Seagate XT500 Hybrid is a good trade-off of performance and price.

  • MBP hard drive beeps after Snow Leopard Upgrade, just like the unibody

After upgrading my MBP to Snow, it is now beeping from the hard drive every 10-15 seconds, just like the videos that were posted of unibody MBPs beeping in 10.5.8 (which Apple released a firmware update for).
Just wondering if anybody else is experiencing this?

sure. I'm using seagate 500gb hdd. But still better than 10.5 where I can not start the system at all.

They are Safari bookmarks and Snow Leopard Safari will open in Mountain Lion, but won't give you a window?????
Here are the bookmarks, since I'm now in Snow Leopard:

Advance warning - Mail worked fine.
I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
I finally gave up on Address Book because it kept creating multiple contacts, which if you tried to merge or delete the multiple contacts, the contacts were deleted. It also worked at first and then stopped working as it should.

  • Upgrade strategy for 2008 Unibody: Comments wanted

Short-time lurker, first time poster. :-)
I have a 2008 unibody Macbook (2.4 GHz w/ 4 GB of RAM). It's not my primary computer, but it is my primary travel laptop. Currently it is running Snow Leopard and a Vista Bootcamp partition. I attempted Parallels, but was disappointed with the performance and memory utilization. I'm trying to put together
an upgrade strategy to get another 2-3 years of good practical work out of the machine, as it's in fairly good shape.
Usage for the machine is primarily in OS X while around the house, and a mix of 75% Windows / 25% OS X while traveling, due to the need to run some proprietary apps that are Windows-only. Most are processor and memory bound, rather than GPU bound, which is why I'm able to keep using this machine despite the relatively poor Nvidia GPU.
I've read a fair bit, and decided on getting a larger SSD (300 - 500 GB), probably the OWC 480 GB SandForce-based model, and upgrading to 8 GB of RAM. I'd also like to migrate the BootCamp install to Windows 7, because Vista really quite *****, and I'm on Win 7 everywhere else. However, I have a couple of questions I was hoping y'all could help me with / provide opinions and feedback.
    1) Should I wait for the release of Mountain Lion, and do a clean install from a custom USB/DVD? Or should I do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard, then upgrade to Mountain Lion through the App Store? I am primarily concerned about Boot Camp.
    2) Recommendation on an SSD: My understanding is that this particular MB revision is SATA II, so the best I can hope for is 1.5 GB throughput because it will be split with the SuperDrive. I was looking at an OWC Mercury Electra 6G in 480 GB (though that may be overkill). I wanted enough space for a comfortable Windows and OS X install for bootcamp (and to re-try Parallels), and going with 240 GB seemed a bit...sparse.
    3) Many of the modeling files I use are already pre-compressed to save space (it's not uncommon for a single simulation to use 4-5 GB grid files and produce 20-30 GB of "compressed" output. Should I stay away from SandForce, or just bite the bullet and pay the higher cost for the OWC Extreme drives?
    4) I've read mixed reports about the ability for 2008 unibody Macbooks to address the full 8 GB of RAM, and instead only sees 6 GB. Is this true/false? They don't make 3 GB sticks, so I'm upgrading anyway, but it would be nice to know.  I'm okay with only seeing 6 GB, but I'm curious whether folks have observed serious stability issues with an upgrade to 8 GB?
    5) Are there any issues WRT Windows 7 through BootCamp on a non-Apple SSD that I should be worried about? I figured I could use TRIM while in BootCamp, and not worry about it in OS X. It still seems to be a toss-up (who do you believe!) whether TRIM makes a difference on SandForce SSDs or not, yes?
    6) Any stability issues with FileVault2 full-disk encryption on SSDs in Lion I should worry about? Planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion as soon as it is available.
Thanks for putting up with teh n00b questions.

Get a regular HDD for  your computer. It should be a notebook sized drive, SATA II-3.0 Gb/s, 7200 RPM. A Seagate XT500 Hybrid is a good trade-off of performance and price.

  • MBP Unibody RAM upgrade fails

    Hello,
    I own a Macbook PRO 5.1 unibody (late 2008) with :
Intel Core 2 Duo 2,53 GHz
    4 Go 1067 Mhz DDR3 RAM
    ROM: MPB51.007E.B06
    MacOS: 10.7.5
As you may know, all conditions are met for me to upgrade to 8 Go of RAM.
    I just purchased the "CORSAIR SO-DIMM DDR3 For MAC - PC3-8500 - 2 x 4 Go (8Go) 1066 MHz - CAS 7 - CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7" kit.
But when installed, the MBP does not boot. I can hear three bips instead and screen remains black.
I tried to install only one slot then the other one. Nothing works.
When I reinstall the original ram, the MBP works just fine.
I'm so disappointed. Any idea on this?
    Thanks a lot,
    Axel

Looks as if you bought the right RAM - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM - and, according to MacTracker your model can 'unofficially' handle up to 8GB of RAM ('officially' Apple says 4GB) so the only thing I can think of is that the RAM may just be faulty?
Go to the Crucial site and click on the System Scanner tab, download the small app that will report your system info back to Crucial and see what kits they have available. You might just want to return the Corsair (although I've never had any trouble with mine) and go with a more 'Mac-compatible' supplier.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
