Upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2 from Server 2003

If they plan to buy new hardware, then yes, this could be a great opportunity for you to learn and tinker with the new server without affecting the main production server. You can install Hyper-V, create some VMs, and learn what the different server roles do. Then perform the final migration when you're ready.
There's tons of topics in the form and on Microsoft TechNet that'll walk you through, step-by-step, on migrating just about anything from 2003 to 2012.
I would of discouraged you if it was an in-place upgrade. If you're getting new hardware, take this as an excellent opportunity to educate yourself and don't feel afraid to reach out.

Hi everyone! I'm relatively new to IT (I've only been working in a business environment for one year) and have already been tasked to build a new server for the company. Whoever built the current server configuration did a terrible job by "best practice" standards and the company wants to do a complete rebuild from the ground up. I have little experience in servers and feel I may be in over my head. At the same time this may be a perfect opportunity to test my skills and prove my worth.
Do you have any tips/advice for setting up a new server (AD domain controller/file server/print server) while the server to be replaced is still running?

  • Manage Server 2012 Backups from Windows 8.1

    Hello,
I am trying to find out if it is possible to manage server 2012 backups from a windows 8.1 workstation via GUI or is the CLI the only option?
I found a few articles online that mention to use a computer management console > storage > backup (but from what I know it only works if you're connecting from a 2012 server itself)
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
We cannot manage server 2012 backups from a windows 8.1 workstation. Ye may need to use Remote Desktop Connection to access server 2012 from windows 8.1 workstation. In additional, we could manage server 2012 essential backups using dashboard on Windows
    8.1 workstation.

  • Is it possible to upgrade Server 2012 Evaluation to Server 2012 R2 Evaluation?

I ask this because I accidentally installed Server 2012 (non R2) Evaluation and I already bought the key for Server 2012 R2 Standard. Is there anyway I can somehow perform the upgrade from Server 2012 Evaluation to Server 2012 R2 Evaluation and then add
the license key? Or worst case, maybe I can downgrade or swap my Server 2012 R2 license key for a Server 2012 one? I'd rather upgrade to Server 2012 R2 but my priority is to avoid a reinstall.

The downgrade might be possible. Read on here.

  • It is compatible Obi 11g  with Windows Server  2012 and Sql Server 2012?

    Hi every
    Please help with two questions.
    1. - Obi 11g is supported on Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012?
There a compatibility matrix which mention compatibility with versions 2012?
    2. - is feasible to install Obi 11g in separate server and install weblogic on another server?
    I appreciate the prompt response
    Regards
    Pedro

    Hi Pedro,
As of November 2012 Compatibility Matrix released by Oracle for OBI 11.1.1.x Windows 2012 and SQL Server 2012 were not supported. It was supported on 2008 Windows and SQL Server.
We can have weblogic and OBI server's on 2 different machines. The approach is to opt software only install. the link below will give more details:
    http://obieeelegant.blogspot.com/2012/07/obiee111160-software-only-installation.html
Let me know if this helped.
    Regards,

the other two domain controllers are running windows server 2003 32-bit operating systems.
could the cause of this problem be that the server 2012 is 64-bit and the server 2003 machines are 32-bit???

  • Downgrading a DC running Server 2012 R2 to Server 2008 R2

This is NOT a licensing question. All I see when searching this question are answers about licensing. I already have the licensing. My question is, is it possible to downgrade a domain controller that is running Server 2012 R2 to Server 2008 R2? I mistakingly
raised the functional level of my domain from server 2003 to 2012 R2 before upgrading my exchange server running 2003 and now I have no way to migrate my exchange server. Ideally, I would like to just downgrade the DC to Server 2008 R2 and upgrade everything
else to that level as well, including Exchange Server 2010. Any relevant input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Difference between database features - SQL Server 2008 R2 navtive vs SQL Server 2012 with SQL Server 2008 compatibility set?

I am investigating the impact of upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. To reduce the impact of the upgrade, I am planning to restore / create our application database onto SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 (SQL Server 2008 and
    SQL Server 2008 R2).
Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?

Are there any differences in feature support for database running in native mode on SQL Server 2008 R2 vs a database installed on SQL Server 2012 with compatibility level 100 set?
Yes there can be difference and impact there are few features deprecated in SQL Server 2012 you must be aware about that. Please see
Deprecated Database Features in SQL Server 2012

After you migrate database to 2012 please don't move ahead with production unless you have tested your application to new created database

  • Change Tracking internals behave differently, SQL Server 2012 vs SQL Server 2008

    <original post by Glenn Estrada>
Reposting an issue from Stack Overflow that a coworker and I are dealing with.
In trouble shooting an issue with synchronizing disconnected devices with a central database server using Sync Framework 1.0, we are experiencing a problem after upgrading to SQL Server 2012 on the server. It appears that the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION
is returning a value 1 higher than it should (or at least than it did prior to the upgrade.)
I have been working thru Arshad
Ali's great walk thru example of how to set up a simple example.
I have run the scripts from #1 thru #5 to insert, delete, and update a row in the Employee table in both a SQL Server 2008 and a 2012 environment.
In 2008, the following statement returns a 0:
    SELECT CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION(OBJECT_ID('Employee'))
    In 2012, it returns a 1.
In working thru a few more scripts (6-8) in the tests, I set the retention period to 1 minute to hopefully force a cleanup action. I left for the day and apparently it ran overnight.
In the 2008 instance, the CHANGE_TRACKING_CURRENT_VERSION and the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION are equal (11). In the 2012 instance, the CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION is one higher (12) than the CHANGE_TRACKING_CURRENT_VERSION (11). This could have
an impact to the synchronization process when a database is idle for extended periods of time. And we have found that process could get caught in a loop, especially when the following test is performed to determine if a re-initialization, as opposed to synchronization,
    is required:
    IF CHANGE_TRACKING_MIN_VALID_VERSION(object_id(N'dbo.Employee')) > @sync_last_received_anchor
RAISERROR (N'SQL Server Change Tracking has cleaned up tracking information for table ''%s''...
Has anyone else experienced this change in behavior? Does anyone have an explanation?

  • How to Migrate Win Server 2008 to Win Server 2012 if PDC server no longer exist?

With this being Foundation (less than 15 users) with some problems already, it might be smarter to just start the new server fresh.

I took over a small business company's network infratructure with Server 2008 Foundation and I would like to migrate to a new Windows Server 2012 r2.The Server 2008 Foundation is a DC with AD / DHCP / DNS / File & Print Server roles. I would like to transfer these roles to the new server with Win Server 2012 r2 std OS. My plan is to join the new server to the old DC, promote it as DC, and transfer roles to it, demote old server and power off. However, there was an older server (Windows 2003) which is no longer in the office and it was the current operations master. The server 2003 was the PDC. When I open AD Domains and Trusts I get this error:"You cannot modify domain or trust info because a PDC emulator cannot be contacted.."Maybe the FSMO roles wasn't transferred over from 2003 to 2008 properly? I don't know. How can I move forward to...

  • Server 2012 R2 File Server - 2008 R2/Win7 Clients Access Denied. SMB 3 Encryption.

I've setup a Server 2012 R2 File Server. When creating shares I selected to enable encryption.
Now Windows 7 and 2008 R2 clients cannot access. Pretty clear that this is SMB 3 encryption the cause.
OK. So can I enable these Windows 7 and 2008 R2 clients to access encrypted SMB 3 shares?
I can find no answer or documentation on this.

So can I enable these Windows 7 and 2008 R2 clients to access encrypted SMB 3 shares?
No, you can't. These Windows 7 and 2008 R2 clients talking to Windows Server 2012 R2, they will negotiate to the lowest common protocol which would be SMB 2.1 enabling communication, while not taking advantage of the SMB 3.0 specific capabilities (encryption
    included).
    There's no built-in encryption inside SMB 2.1

  • What is the difference between SQL Server 2012 R2 & SQL Server 2014

    Hi all,
I am using SQL Server from last 3 years. I started SQL Server 2008 R2. Now I am using SQL Server 2012. I want to change my development environment to SQL Server 2012 R2. But suddenly I saw that SQL Server 2014 is released. I want to know what are the
differences between SQL Server 2012 R2 & SQL Server 2014. Are both those are the same or different products?
I searched through the Internet but I didn't find any article regarding that. So could someone help me to solve this matter?
    Thanks,
    Regards,

  • Can i upgrade to windows 8.1 enterprise from 90 day evaluation version

can i upgrade to windows 8.1 enterprise from 90 day evaluation version? as our company has volume license key for win 8.1 enterprise purchased

    yes you can.
Skip Product Key Input in Windows 8.1 Setup
To achieve our objective, we need to edit the ei.cfg (edition configuration) file present inside the
/sources folder of the ISO image. All we need to do is to provide the version details inside this file so that Windows Setup is not needed to ask for a product key to install the appropriate version relevant to that product key.
If you are going to install Windows 8.1 using a USB drive, transfer the installation files to the USB and then proceed to step 2. On the other hand if you need to create a DVD, open the ISO using a utility such as MagicISO so that the structure is not affected.
    Browse to the /sources folder.
Look for the ei.cfg file and open it in a text editor such as Notepad or Notepad++ (preferred). If the file doesn’t already exist, create a new text document and rename it as ei.cfg
Now amend the file depending on the version which is included in your particular copy and the version which you want to install. For Professional edition which will be the best bet for most of the users, paste the following context into the
ei.cfg file. Make sure that anything that already exists in the file should be cleared first.
    [EditionID]
    Professional
    [Channel]
    Retail
    [VL]
    0
Save the file and run the Windows 8.1 setup again. The setup will not ask for the Product Key anymore.
This is not a hack or anything illegal. The configuration above is supported by Windows installer and is well documented by Microsoft and can also be used on some other versions of Windows as well.
