Upgrading Ultra 5 Solaris 2.6 to V280 with Solaris 8 or 9

Our Ultra 5 still runs Solaris 2.6. What's the easiest way to upgrade this box (hardware and OS), without having to re-install all apps? We're looking at used V280s, but I figure they will not run Solaris 2.6, so an upgrade is needed. Should I first upgrade to 8 or 9 on the Ultra 5, and then move the dump files (or disks?) on to the the V280? This sounds like it's not going to work. Otherwise, what's a smooth hardware transition for an Ultra 5, for us to get newer harware and OS?
Budget is limited. I can't try out many scenarios.

Solaris is backward compatable, perhaps you should try to migrate on a test platform first, shouldn't be too difficult to get another SPARC system. I use 220R for this, cheap on parts, very reliable and has a broad range of supported OS releases, limited only in performance compared with newer systems.

I agree with you on the hardware upgrade, Ultra 5 is a platform with many limitations. I am not 100% with Informix, my experience with it is on the HU-UX platform, however IBM released version 10 in 2005.

One thing is sure though, if you approach IBM regarding the upgrade, you may be looking a new/upgrade licenses, this may be the reason the managment have not taken that option.
Another suggestion would be to consider another server that supports Solaris 2.6 instead of the 280R, this would make life much easier, Sun Enterprise 420R may suit, at least you will find a fully loaded system to perform much better than the Ultra 5 ( supports up to 4 CPUs and 4GB RAM ).
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E420R/E420R.html
For more expansion ( CPUs and Memory ), but more complicated there is a E4500 as well:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E4500/E4500.html
Moving to a new platform is not going to be cheap either way, but software migration will be the more expensive route.
Sun offer both of the above mentioned systems with full as new warranty in the remanufactured program:

  • Is Solaris 10 reallly binary compatible with Solaris 8?

I have to migrate a binary code from Solaris 8 (x86) to solaris 10(x86).
Sun quarantees backward compatibility but I could not succeed yet.
I only have the binaries. System is composed of several binaries communicating
each other over network and loopback device.
The application opens randomly in one of three states:
    1. Process A could not connect to display process
    2. Process B could not connect to display process
    3. All processes connect each other and application works nice.
Of course application has more than 2 processes.
I did a truss to Process A and B and found out that Process A reads a file and write to
scoket but somewhere in the file it stop writing and doe snot do anything.
Process B connects to process C but then stops there.
But sometimes they work as if they are expected.
When application runs on solaris 8 no problem at all.
What could be the reason? Here is some more details.
Application uses open windows. I have installed OWA to Solaris 10.
    Thanks in advance

We have found that the problem is due to tcp_fusion.
disabling tcp_fusion worked like a charm.
add the following line to /etc/system
    set ip:do_tcp_fusion = 0

  • Experience with Solaris 10 Memory Management

    Dear Forum!
Using Note 724713 we installed a couple of R3 Systems on Solaris 10. Independently which R3 Version is used we observe much more memory problems as with prior solaris releases or other operating systems like AIX.
For instance1: We moved three R3 Systems from a server with solaris 8 to a server with solaris 10. We didnt change memory parameters of R3 and the databases (oracle). The solaris 10 server has the same amount of memory (8GB) like the solaris 8 server. Now, on the solaris 10 server we can only start two R3 systems, the third one doesnt start because no memory can be allocated. The memory parameter of all component slightly overload the main memory. Because the systems are not productive they mostly idle and performance loss due to paging and even swapping didnt worry us. Not even that the third system didnt start, the whole OS was a kind of freezed and no more work was possible, also not on the other two R3 systems which were already startet.
    For instance2:
On another server with 16GB memory we startet an installation of a sapsystem and the sapinst crashed due to memory absence. Admittedly, here the main memory was also a bit overloaded, but this is not unusal here and I never saw sapinst crashing because of this.
In both cases Swapspace was adequate.
Do you have similar  experiences? Or any tipps to solve the problem.
    Thanks
    Andreas

  • NIC on Ultra 10 with Solaris 10 not running

    Hi,
I have a couple of Old Ultra 10's. I've installed Solaris 10 on both of them. I tried to give them a point to point connectivity using a Cross-over cable. But, when I do a ifconfig -a on both of them, I get it as
<UP, BROADCAST, MULTICAST> MTU ...... if you noticed here, I did not get them as RUNNIING. I have given them private IP's 192.168.1.1 and .2 and they are both on 255.255.255.0. I have them both plumbed and up with the above IP and netmasks. but they do not ping each other. I wonder where I am wrong. Can somebody gimme a insight into this, as to what has to be done to rectify this problem. One of them had the MTU value as 8232 and the other one at 1500 so, I gave the one with 8232
    # ifconfig hme0 mtu 1500
    1. Are the IPs correct ?
    2. Are the net mask values set right ?
    3. Should any of the files need to be updated?
    4. what about the /etc/defaultrouter does this have to do anything with the servers not pinging each other ?
    5. Does the NIC driver need an update for Solaris 10 ? If so can you pls specify the link for me to download ?
    Advice Pls.
    David

I've had tremendous trouble in the past with making crossover ethernet cables function properly on some Ultra 10 machines. As far as I'm aware, it should have the same hardware as other Sun models, but that's the only one I've had real problems with.
I've had several jumpstart setups that failed until I was able to bring in a hub or switch instead of working them back-to-back.
So no direct help from me, I'm afraid. But it could just be the hardware. Use 'kstat' (or the ndd method) to check if the link is up. No link, no traffic. Until that happens your questions 1-4 are irrelevant. Question 5 is a good one, but no, Solaris 10 would include the hardware drivers. And for equipment as old as the Ultra 10, I'm guessing there haven't been many recent updates.

    Hi JTB,
There is not currently a patch for Solaris, but you may want to take a look at the following articles that address the use of GPIB-ENET devices with Solaris 8:
    GPIB-ENET/100 Fails with Solaris 8
Unable to Use the GPIB-ENET with LabVIEW under Solaris
Again, I recommend trying to monitor the specific commands you are executing and where the error is occurring in order to isolate the issue.

    Hello,
    You can use kdmconfig.
Let me know if it solved your issue. I have the same problem with solaris 10 b72... JDS cannot be loaded, and I come back to the login screen. But no problem with CDE.

  • Several mysterious problems with Solaris 11 x86 install

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine. I like the operating system, but I've promptly acquired some mysterious problems. The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E2500 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB SATA disk and a 147 GB SCSI disk.
I have had a few occasions on which the screen goes totally blank, the monitor claims that there is no signal, and I have to restart the machine. However, with the blank screen, the hard drive activity light is sometimes still flashing. This happens predictably when I try to log off (as opposed to shutting down) and when I use Totem media player and click on anything inside the Totem window. The motherboard has built-in graphics and brief specifications can be found here:
    http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/professionalpc/ESPRIMO/Datasheets/ds_esprimo_edition_e2500.pdf
Yesterday my PS/2 keyboard started causing the motherboard to beep crazily when I use it. It beeps rapidly 4 times, then prints the expected character. However, the problem doesn't occur at the initial log in screen. The mouse cursor has also gone beserk on one occasion, flying all over the screen (I had this problem with a previous PC, but a different OS, and thought it was a hardware fault, which I why I got this new computer). With the keyboard problem, the machine is basically unusable. However, it is configured as a dual boot machine, and the keyboard problem isn't present with Windows XP.
There are also a few smaller, odd problems. Occasionally all the icons vanish from my Gnome desktop. The command prompt also mysteriously changed from $chris@pluto to $bash-4.1 just before the keyboard problem appeared, although that might have had something to do with me copying my home directory to a different disk and editing the /etc/auto_home file (moving the home directory worked fine). Also, unlike with Solaris 9 SPARC, I find that I have to have external SCSI devices switched on at boot time, should I want to use them later. That's a pain. With Solaris 9, I could run "boot -r" when I first attached the device, then switch on the SCSI devices and mount them whenever I wanted.
After the useful advice I received here about "more" and "less", I thought I'd post these problems and see if anyone can help. I'd really appreciate some advice. Can anyone identify likely causes for these problems? Which problems can I expect to solve and which do I have to live with?

    Hello friends,
    I have a Sparc Ultra 5 machine with Solaris 8 .
Now I want to establish network connectivity by configuring net work card in it.also I want to establish connectivity with Intel Systems also. How can I accomplish this.
I will be grateful to you if u cud guide me in this.
    Thank u in anticipation

I think the V20z have an ordinary broadcom chipset, if so the network interface should be called bgeX.
    So try:
    ifconfig bge0 plumb
.. dont forget your /etc/hostname.bge0 file..

  • Help with Solaris 10

    Hello,
I just got ahold of a SunBlade 100 system (that's having video problems, I already posted what the problem is in the Hardware section) and I would like some help with Solaris 10. I have never used Sun before, and I figured why not get a machine and start learning. =)
Anyways, I do alot of web design and networking...on Mac's though.
I'm setting this system up on a Rack along with a Win Xp box, a Mac G4, and a Linux Mint machine.
I also have two of these Scsi towers that came with the Sun System. They can each hold I believe 8-10 Drives each? Not sure..that i want to setup at a later time.
My questin is this. I'd like to run websites off my Sun system. But i'm not sure how to transfer my files from iWeb to the Sun, and how to control the sites on the system, as well as turning the site on, off, etc.
I'd also like to store music on it as well. Because I can have alot of Scsi drives, i figured I can get quite large amount of storage for songs. I'd like to set it up to where I can give someone a login information and a website (ex. myuploadsite.net) and they can go in, and upload there music. But, I'd like to make it to where I can make the website in iWeb, and run it off the Sun system, and store all the files on the Sun as well.
And my last question is this. How do I remote desktop to a Sun System from a Mac. I'm using Apple Remote Desktop, and the way the rack is setup, is that I remote connect to the Xp, linux, and Mac box's (saves monitors, and space. =), and also because I'm usually never home...
Thanks in advance for the help!
Oh, and if anyone has a Instant Messanger and wouldn't mind having a chat with me, that would be great.

  • Ultra 40-M2: How to dual boot Solaris 10 and Windows XP?

I have an Ultra 40-M2 with 3 300-GB SAS drives.
First two drives I will use for Solaris 10 and mirror them using Solaris Volume Manager.
The 3rd hard drive contains Windows XP. I want to be given the option of booting into Windows. By default, I want to boot into Solaris 10.
How do I enable all this? Is there a configuration file I need to edit in Solaris to create this dual boot?

You don't need to configure GRUB. If the third drive is XP only, you can setup the boot order in your BIOS and when you boot the system you can hit the F8 key and select to boot from your XP drive.
It works very well for me.

The chash failures indicate that either the repository you're using has corrupt content for those files, or the files are being corrupted on download. The latter is more likely, usually a result of badly-behaved http proxies.

  • Confused about ZFS filesystems created with Solaris 11 Zone

    Hello.
Installing a blank Zone in Solaris *10* with "zonepath=/export/zones/TESTvm01" just creates one zfs filesystem:
    +"zfs list+
    +...+
    +rzpool/export/zones/TESTvm01 4.62G 31.3G 4.62G /export/zones/TESTvm01"+
Doing the same steps with Solaris *11* will ?create? more filesystems:
    +"zfs list+
    +...+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05 335M 156G 32K /export/zones/TESTvm05+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05/rpool 335M 156G 31K /rpool+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05/rpool/ROOT 335M 156G 31K legacy+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05/rpool/ROOT/solaris 335M 156G 310M /export/zones/TESTvm05/root+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05/rpool/ROOT/solaris/var 24.4M 156G 23.5M /export/zones/TESTvm05/root/var+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05/rpool/export 62K 156G 31K /export+
    +rpool/export/zones/TESTvm05/rpool/export/home 31K 156G 31K /export/home"+
I dont understand why Solaris 11 is doing that. Just one FS (like in Solaris 10) would be better for my setup. I want to configure all created volumes by myself.
Is it possible to deactivate this automatic "feature"?

There are several reasons that it works like this, all guided by the simple idea "everything in a zone should work exactly like it does in the global zone, unless that is impractical." By having this layout we get:
    * The same zfs administrative practices within a zone that are found in the global zone. This allows, for example, compression, encryption, etc. of parts of the zone.
    * beadm(1M) and pkg(1) are able to create boot environments within the zone, thus making it easy to keep the global zone software in sync with non-global zone software as the system is updated (equivalent of patching in Solaris 10). Note that when Solaris 11 updates the kernel, core libraries, and perhaps other things, a new boot environment is automatically created (for the global zone and each zone) and the updates are done to the new boot environment(s). Thus, you get the benefits that Live Upgrade offered without the severe headaches that sometimes come with Live Upgrade.
    * The ability to have a separate /var file system. This is required by policies at some large customers, such as the US Department of Defense via the DISA STIG.
    * The ability to perform a p2v of a global zone into a zone (see solaris(5) for examples) without losing the dataset hierarchy or properties (e.g. compression, etc.) set on datasets in that hierarchy.
When this dataset hierarchy is combined with the fact that the ZFS namespace is virtualized in a zone (a feature called "dataset aliasing"), you see the same hierarchy in the zone that you would see in the global zone. Thus, you don't have confusing output from df saying that / is mounted on / and such.
Because there is integration between pkg, beadm, zones, and zfs, there is no way to disable this behavior. You can remove and optionally replace /export with something else if you wish.
If your goal is to prevent zone administrators from altering the dataset hierarchy, you may be able to accomplish this with immutable zones (see zones admin guide or file-mac-profile in zonecfg(1M)). This will have other effects as well, such as making all or most of the zone unwritable. If needed, you can add fs or dataset resources which will not be subject to file-mac-profile and as such will be writable.

  • Can not use SVM disc mirror on Sun X2200 M2 with solaris u7

Last year,I tried to build cluster with solaris u6, but I got this error "Insufficient metadevice database replicas located" after SVM set up.
I tried lastest solaris 10 u7(09/05) with Sun x2200 M2 server again, but I got the same error.
I think it maybe driver's problem,so I tested solaris 10 u7 again with one old x86 machines and this machines has pure scsi card and scsi disc.
Also I tried it with ide drive, and everything is fine without any error message.
I checked that solaris 10 u5 will consider sata disc on x2200 m2 as ide disc, so SVM works fine.
But after I upgrade to solaris 10 u7,system will consider sata disc as scsi drive, and SVM will not work.
So I can see this is a bug of solaris 10 u7?

  • Directory server 4.12 and 4.15 problem with Solaris 8

    Hi there,
I have been having an ongoing problem with my read/write master
    directory server. It
occasionally stops responding to bind attempts and queries. The current
    setup as is running
on a Sunfire 280R with Solaris 8. Up until a few days ago I was running
    4.12, I upgraded this
to 4.15 to see of the problem would go away. I am running several 4.13
    replicas on other
Solaris 8 machines with no problems.
The biggest problem is that this master directory server is needed for
    our Iplanet messaging
server 5.1 implementation. Every time the directory fails you cannot log
    in to the messaging
server. (there doesn't appear to be anyway of sending authentication to
    a read only server).
Anyway I was just wanting to see if anyone else had the same problem or
    had fixed it and could
provide some insight into how to fix it. Also any pointers on what to
    look for in the directory
server error logs would be useful.
I had an idea that it might have been running out of available
connections so I set it to close idle
connections after 300 seconds. Is there any docs on tuning the resources
    for the server or for
identifying if you have a resource problem?
Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Please contact me directly as
    well as to the newsgroup
    if possible.
    Thanks,
    Scott.
