Upgrading USB on G4 Sawtooth?

Is it possible to add a PCI card with USB 2.0 to my old G4 Sawtooth, or is the bus too slow and I'm stuck with the old, slow version of USB? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I didn't know where else to turn for answers other than to ask the Mac Community. Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes it is possible, the problem you run into is that some iPods are FAT32 formatted, and it may be too slow for those iPods. If they are formatted with the Mac version of the iPod firmware update, there is no problem. MacAlly, Keyspan, and Iogear all make compatible cards. Check the specs of the card to be sure, and with the manufacturer that they are rated to give sufficient power to the iPod (assuming that's what you want to connect it to). Your other option is to buy an old Firewire capable iPod instead.

  • Upgrade USB

    Dear all
I am wondering if I should buy Macbook pro now or later as I hear that USB 3.0 spec has been sent to apple last June. If I buy macbook pro now and it release in next month I will regret for buying too soon.
Has anyone got experience of upgrading USB components through Apple service? How much would it usually cost and how long would it take?
Does Apple do upgrade service in UK/Europe as well?
Many thanks for answering the question!!!!

Thanks for the information from you two, especially from Templeton Peck. I understand that waiting is not a good solution, and I will always give a go. If a new product come out, simply sell the old one and get the new one if the budget is there.
Another question here from me is, if you have experience selling old Mac machines. Where will be the best place for selling second hand product? Is there any standard pricing rules?
I am now using mac mini and simply thinking for the benefit of the mobility a MBP can give me. SO, I might just go for a 17" model and get rid of my young mini (just one and half year old). Thanks again.

  • HDD/RAM upgrade question - 400 mhz sawtooth

    Hello!
My Sister has a Sawtooth G4 - Well, I believe it's a sawtooth anyway. I don't know for sure, so I'll post a bunch of specs:
It's a 400mhz model, early 2000. It shipped with a 10GB HDD, and 128 RAM. I believe it also has a 100 Mbps Ethernet. It has a DVI and VGA monitor video card, but i'm not sure the Video RAM level. It has an internal FW 400 port as well. The internal Airport card is shot - er, maybe the extension.
It has major issues with the system - and it seems to stem from a botched OS 9.2 install. It's running 9.1, but with trouble. For one, I can't open the extension manager. For two, it's slow, and acts funny.
Well, I thought i'd be nice, and try to get the G4 working for my Sister. It seems that it may require an Clean install of OS 9.0. Oh well, I can do that easily enough. However, before I go through all that trouble, I'm contemplating upgrading the hard drive (at least). With only 10GB, it's not very useful for iTunes, Photoshop, or our old OS 9 games - things she'd like to have.
I looked at the specs for the Mac at:
    http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g4saw.shtml
It takes an 3.5 inch Ultra ATA drive? I've seen those around - and a 60GB drive or so is becoming pretty cheap. (I've seen 80G for under $50) I just figured i'd ask if anyone has tips on what to buy, how to install it, and Particularly if I need any special adapters for the G4. It does have a slot for a second internal HDD. I've also heard that a fast, second internal HDD can overheat the computer - is this a common issue I should be worried about?
The same questions go for the RAM. I'd like to add at least an extra 128MB, but I'm not entirely sure what to get. The above site mentions that it uses PC100 SDRAM in DIMM mode? Hmmm... I'll have to look around.
Please excuse any silly questions, I'm just far more familiar with more current systems, and it's 1 AM
    Thanks,
    Dan
PS: It looks to have a slot for a floppy drive under the DVD-ROM drive. I have a bunch of files on our OLD PowerBook 5300 that i'd like to move - but I need a floppy drive. Our old external USB floppy drive is.... very dead. The external floppy drives i've seen at stores seem to be pretty expensive, but internal drives are still fairly cheap (some under $30). How hard would it be to find/buy/install a compatible floppy drive? What format would it need to be? If such an upgrade runs over the $40-50 that a new USB drive costs, it's not really worth it.
    15" Powerbook G4 (May 2005 ed), iMac DV (9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1G Ram, 192 (iMac)

    Wow, thanks again!
I figured out that this is the AGP graphics Sawtooth - not the Yikes model. Where do these names come from?
As per upgrading to OS X - we have a G5 which she can use, and a XP box - which is down with the flu for the third (or fourth?) time. Therefore, the G4 will stay OS 9. She just wants to have a reliable machine that can play DVDs and music, and play some of our old OS 9 games. It's not intended to run any new programs, just the old ones that she can't run now. When I mentioned photoshop - it's a "Limited edition" of version 5.0 - and it's far, far, FAR more reliable on the G4 than on our 2-year-old XP box, despite the G4 running 9.1 with a wimpy 128 meg ram!
The main reason for upgrading the HDD was to make it more practical for games and MP3s - via iTunes 2! It won't play AAC, but it plays MP3s fine. She has at least 8 Gig of music - too much for a 10G drive! (Even half of it leaves precious little expansion room)
I'm watching for a "small" HDD - it seems that our local Fry's is no longer selling anything smaller than 100G - which was $100! Or perhaps they were just sold out at the time. I'll keep an eye out for another sale. In fact, asking my friend for an old drive is a good idea. They have parts from at least a dozen old windows and linux boxes floating around - so they likely have a drive or two. If it's a used HDD, loaded with Windows (probably 95-2000), will it confuse the system before re-formatting?
    As per RAM:
I'm quite aware of the lack of RAM. However, I'll have to watch for sales! I'm not aware of any "Mom and Pop" stores close by, although that's a fantastic idea. A PC 133 128 MB card runs $40-50 at the local computer stores, but only $15 at OWC! Therefore, if I don't find suitable RAM locally, I'll order some. I wouldn't mind an extra 256 (or 512) for my iMac either.
Speaking of iMac - I've determined that it's the iMac DV Special ED from March 2000. (400mhz, originally 13 Gig Drive - now 60, 9.2.2) The question is whether or not it maxes out at 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM. One of the Apple support sites I found ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58007 ) said that the slot loading iMacs max out at 512. It makes no distinction between any slot loading iMac. However at http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/dvse.shtml, it mentions that this model specifically can accept 1 gig of RAM. I'll assume that the Apple article is correct, but I'd love to get a full 650 MB if I can! (I'd love to add a 512 to the 128 I have now)
It's amazing, really - after 4 years of constant use, a hard drive motor failure (hence the 60G HDD), and a year and a half burried on a desk, the iMac is becoming more handy by the day. It's good at capturing the Video and audio from say, Halo, while my PB's too busy to run anything else (via S-Video and audio through our DV cam). It makes a great DVD player, an iTunes Jukebox, and game machine - most of my games are still OS 9. To top it off, it makes a great wireless base-station for my Nintendo DS at school, where there's no WiFi! With 30 gig of space left on the HDD, it has plenty of room for whatever I want to do with it. Guess you can "teach and old dog new tricks!'
Well, I guess this means my question is answered for now - once I find the things I need, i may have some more questions, Thanks again!

  • Can I upgrade  USB port 1.1 to 2.0 ?

I have a G3 iBook with USB 1.1. I want to buy a iPod shuffle which can only use USB 2.0 for the power charge. Can I upgrade my USB port to 2.0, and how my does it cost?
Or can I use FireWire to connect to iPod shuffle as power charge and dowload music?

    Erik Swanson:
i Will this work the same for an ipod nano? I just got one and whenever I connect it, it says, "do not disconnect".
When you first connect any iPod, it will update with any new songs you have. After that, you simply need to "eject" the iPod as you would any other USB or FireWire storage device. The eject option is right next to the iPod's symbol in iTunes, and should be listed on the left side of each Finder window. Also - there's a right-click option to eject on the desktop symbol for your iPod.
Once it's "ejected" you can still leave it plugged in. It'll still draw current to power the device and/or recharge the battery. However - once it's "ejected", you can unplug it at any time since all communication with your Mac has been ended.

  • Mavericks upgrade -- USB 3.0 only at 480Mb

On my early 2011 macbookpro, Mavericks upgrade from Mountain Lion  seems to have slowed my usb 3.0 speed.
Though it says 3.0, speed is maxing out at 480Mb.
    Blackmagic speed test confirms.
I've tried this with two different Toshiba usb.3.0 drives.
They worked nice and fast in Mountain Lion.

I see the same thing.  You have an external USB3.0 hub but the 2011 only has USB2.0
    USB3 is backwards compatible.
I can not justify what you thought you say before you upgrades to Mavericks.

  • Upgrading G4, 400 MHz Sawtooth Video Card

I know this has been addressed but I can't find the answer to this question:
    I have a 400Mhz G4 Sawtooth
    20" Cinema Display
I want to buy a video card that supports latest OSX iMovie, Quick Time etc...
    What do I buy?

The reason I need a new graphics card is so I can use iMovie and Quicktime, on my computer in iTunes movies do not work at all (Yes, I have the latest edition of Quicktime Pro)
The latest OSX (Tiger) has included things within its iMovie rendering software which simply will not work unless you have a Quartz Extreme compatible graphics card - These include: Themes, Ken Burns Photos and Video FX. Believe me, the problems that countless people are having with the latest versions of iMovie are most likely caused by not having this Quartz Extreme Compatible card.
Since I use iMovie a lot and have a need to view certain graphics and movies on my display while trying to render them - My computer, as it is, has become obsolete.
I knew this day would come - It always does - I just do not have the money, right now, to buy a new Mac.
I also know that the Intel Core Due is going to be upgraded to a much faster processor - the recently released Intel Quad processor is on the table as Apple's new "Must Have" upgrade... I also know, from experience, that soon after the Christmas rush of buying Apple products is over, What was the latest & greatest is suddenly obsolete.
Thank you for all of your help.

  • 10.6.2 Upgrade : USB fails to recognize iPhone

Just loaded 10.6.2 from Software Upgrade to two iMacs and a MBP. All appear well, except that my iPhone (first generation) is no longer recognized through the USB adapter. No power, no sync, no recognition by iTunes. The keyboard and mouse both work just fine (USB) on the iMac7,1 models. No apparent problems with the MBP either - except for the same issue of failure to recognize the iPhone via USB. All USB ports on all three machines were tried. No variation. The good news? Absolute consistency.
The iPhone has no difficulty being recognized from other Macs with either Leopard or 10.6.1. Is anyone else seeing this problem, and know of a solution?
Yes, the phone firmware is up-to-date. No, it is not jail-broken, Nor am I running any unusual 3rd-party background processes on the Macs. Incompatibility with VMWare's Fusion (2.0.6) was a suspect, but the problem is present regardless of whether the VM running, and one of the newly-upgraded iMacs has no non-Apple software on it at all.
I would greatly appreciate any knowledgeable suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Good evening, K T. At your suggestion, I turned off and on the phone. Lo and behold. Problem solved. Imagine my embarrassment. Thank you very much for taking the time to set me straight.

  • Upgrading USB installer and MBPro

    Hello,
I _finally_ upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7 and am experiencing some confusion that I hope can be eliminated here.
I downloaded Lion install app from store and made a Bootable USB volume <Mac OS X Install ESD>.
When I booted from this USB volume to install Lion, I got a utilities screen. I didn't know how to proceed with that so I rebooted and clicked on my <Lion install.app> that I downloaded. It said an update was available and I downloaded it and installed 10.7.3 without issue.
The app disappeared from  my iMac. ( I do have it on a backup drive albeit not updated to 10.7.3)
Now I am wondering how do I upgrade my USB installer and also upgrade my MBPro without downloading from the store again??
I copied all the files from the USB Install drive to another disc, made a folder and have made a .dmg of it.
But if I use it I still would have to download the update.
    Thanks for your consideration.

    Thanks Kappy,
I just found this about using RecoveryDiskAssistant.dmg
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/Using-Os-X-Lions-Recovery-Disk-Assistan t_4.htm
Could I run this to an external FW drive or the outdated USB and then attach it to my MBP and install from it?
    Peace.

  • X79A-GD45 windows 7 freezes during boot after bios upgrade/usb 3.0 drivers inst.

    Hello,
After I upgraded my bios from 1.3 to 1.4 I noticed I still had some not properly installed hardware in the computer management screen, so I used live update 5 and found the the Renesas USB3.0 Drivers. The system runs fine, except from a cold start.
When starting the machine, windows freezes on the 4 colour logo, before the usb initializes (this I can tell from the keyboard not lighting up).
A forced reboot does not help. However, going in the bios (to check if all drives are functional) and then booting, does. After this the machine runs fine again.
Now my question is, is this caused by the new bios or by the Renesas USB3.0 Drivers? Or is it something completely different?
    Thanks a lot,

Using LU5 often ends up this way doing UEFI/BIOS updates dead board!
In the future, recommend to use the forum flasher found here with instructions on how to use it; https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
After a flash, it is also recommended to remove the power cord from the PSU, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS & reset.

  • Upgrade usb 1.1 to 2.0?

    Hello.
Is it possible to upgrade the usb 1.1 ports on my Tibook 667 (DVI) to usb 2.0?
I am aware of the cardbus option, but my cardbus slot is already tied up with another function, so I'd really love to be able to upgrade the existing usb port(s).
    please and thanks,
    dt

Hi, Dan. No can do — CardBus is the only option.
EDIT: (Just in case you're alert enough to think of this.) I saw a post recently where someone wondered whether it would be possible to use the USB 2 port on a combination FireWire+USB2 external hard drive to connect USB 2 devices to his USB 1.1 Mac. The answer is no: if the drive is connected to the Mac via FireWire, only the second FireWire port on the drive is "live". The drive's USB 2 port is inert in that configuration.

  • Firmware Upgrade/ USB Connectiv

    My old computer died
so now i have taken some of the components and added them to a new core PC!
Its all up and running just fine, with one exception!
I cant make my Zen Touch be discovered by the system.
I have an icon in the my Computer for the Nomad Explorer, but its disabled and if I plug or unplug in the USB cable the system 'bings' me - but no connection. so whats wrong?
I want to upgrade the firmware and load some of those new CD's i had for christmas :womansad:

Ok Got this to work finally!
Step 1: Make sure your phone is totally disconnected.
Step 2: Uninstall all nokia related software. This includes PC Suite, Nokia Cable Drivers and also the one that was stuffing me up and hides down the list, PC Connectivity.
    Step 3: Restart the machine
Step 4: Install nokia PC Suite from the package cd included with your nokia 6110 navigator phone. Follow all prompts as you normally would. BUT DON'T Connect your phone!
Step 5: Go to nokia website and download the software updater application. Install this application. It will prompt you to install a cable connectivity driver (and perhaps C++ if not already installed). Just click ok. Go through the prompts as per normal. BUT DON'T Connect your phone!
Step 6: Open software updater. NOW Connect the phone. Don't do anything until all the New device stuff loads. It will finish with the PC Suite phone icon saying your phone is connected.
Step 7: Run the Phone Software updator wizard. It will make connect and disconnect noises through the process and will show your phone as disconnected on the pc. It will also make the usual new device deteced noises a few times. The screen will go blank. Eventually the screen will flash with ver 3.58 and nokia screen then flash a few more times with test. Just let it run its course and it will end with the new firm ware updated and phone back to the standby screen.
    FINISH!
This is what worked for me. I'm not a tech nut that can diagnose problems easily just someone with some general computer back ground that got throught it! Thanks to the heads up in the previous posts about the drivers.
    Cheers, Tre.

Huh. I was relying on the readme.html file that ships with NI-DAQ 7.5, which lists simply "NI USB-9215".
I note that the article linked by Tom includes, "An upgrade kit is available for the USB-9211 and USB-9215."
If the original poster just bought his 9215, perhaps he can trade it in on a new one.
Tom- is NI still selling both? Is there a difference in specs, or just in the under-the-hood workings?

  • After upgrade USB Keyboard not working to unlock cryptdev-ed HDD

    Hi,
Is there any sane reason, why my USB keyboard does not work after upgrading right now to enter the keyphrase to unlock my hdd? (x86_64, kernel 2.6.28-1.1, luks encrypted hdd that contains an lvm2 volume) The keyboard works fine in grub, short time before I have to enter the password, it goes black (numblock LED turns off). Luckily I have an USB-to-PS/2 converter, so I just plugged it in there, the system recognizes this and I'm able to enter the password. Afterwards, pluggin the keyboard back into its USB port, it works again.
Has anyone encountered the same strange behaviour? Or has anyone a solution for this problem?
    best regards

Even worse, my LUKS key is stored on a USB-Stick. After upgrading, my USB-Stick was not recognized and so the LUKS key could not be read. Luckily (very luckily) I had defined a plain text keyphrase for LUKS slot 2 and so I was able to enter this via the PS2 keyboard. Anyone who has not provided this "backdoor" for themselves faces a difficult task.
A bug report exists concerning this problem: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12867

  • Upgrades USB hub to USB 2.0

i've recently purchased eyetv for my emac. everything seems fine apart from that it won't allow me to go any further after my computer tells me it does not support a USB 2.0. The only ways I can see around this (if possible) are to get an external USB 2.0 hub or to connect it through my fire wire. could you tell me if this is possible or if there is any other way around this?
    cheers

Use a FireWire cable with the EyeTV if possible. If you purchase an USB 2.0 hub, its speed will be limited by the USB ports on the computer, and an eMac cannot accept an USB 2.0 card.
