Upgrading video card - Is it possible, and what would work best?

Hi there!
So, I play a lot of video games on my iMac, and lately I've been noticing major issues with my video card that just keep getting worse as games get better. For instance, in World of Warcraft I maintain about 6 frames per second in places with a lot of particle effects, and maybe 15-20 frames per second in most other places. I tried minimizing the window to about a tenth of the screen to see if it was just more than my card could handle at that resolution, and lo and behold my fps went up to over 30 in a place with lots of particle effects. On the downside, I have no desire to play at anything but fullscreen mode in games, and I'd really like to have decent framerates at high resolutions. This is the Graphics/Displays section copy pasted from my system profiler application:
ATI Radeon 9600:
Chipset Model: ATY,RV351
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: AGP
VRAM (Total): 128 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x4150
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-117
Displays:
iMac:
Display Type: LCD
Resolution: 1440 x 900
Depth: 32-bit Color
Built-In: Yes
Core Image: Supported
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported

Status: No display connected
SO, if it's possible to ugprade, I'd love some help on how to go about doing this, and what I should upgrade to, thanks!

Hello,
You can't upgrade the graphics card in your iMac.
Make sure that you have plenty of RAM in your system, that all non-essential applications are closed down during your gameplay (including not having too many widgets in Dashboard) and at least 15% of your hard disk is free. This should allow your machine to work at it's maximum.

I need help with this. I know how to use UNIX commands, however, never configured a system before.....Thanks

    Hi,
What is the exact make and manufacturer of your video card? I am not sure if you have checked the Hardware Compatibility List yet for the supported hardware? If not take a look at the following: http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/hcl/8/401/files/c0112.htm#VIDEO-1
To change the settings of your video card your best bet would be to open up a terminal and type "kdmconfig" this will let you change various system settings (video card settings, mouse, keyboard...etc).
    Hope This Helps

  • I want to save my music library in the cloud /iTunes Match, but want both my wife's devices and mine to have access. Is this possible, and what's the best way to do this?

    Hi all,
Can I store my iTunes file in the cloud, so that my wife and I can access it from various devices.
Devices would include 2 iPhone 6S, 2 iPad2s, couple of iPods and a MacBook Air.
We can't save all the music to a hard drive due to storage size.
If we save it to the Cloud, can we create playlists and only download these as /when we need them?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ed

    Hi,
Your music needs to be in your iTunes library on your computer or on an external drive. Read this user topic Make and keep a backup of your iTunes library, and only stream from the cloud.
You can only use one Apple ID with match. For your wife to get access to your music in the cloud, you will need to use your Apple ID

  • HT3696 is it possible to upgrade video card in mac book?

Hi Folks, I'm a Mac Newbie, I was wondering if there is a way to upgrade video card on Mac Book? I'm trying to add final cut and it tells me my video card won't work with it, appreciate any suggestions. RTD

No, Macbooks like all laptops have the video card integrated with the logic board.

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.
    Ciao.

  • So im about to buy a mac pro, I just need help cause im not sure if it's worth paying more for instance, a hi-res screen compared to the stock screen, and will i really miss the .2 ghz and the upgraded video card if I get the 2.0 ghz mbp?

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • Upgrade video card for compaq S6000CL

How can I upgrade my video card on my compaq S6000CL?  I have vista installed (upgrade).  I'd like to download the upgraded video card software and not have to replace the whole video card.
    Thanks!

    Hi pilot3579,
So, in looking at the specifications for your computer (Compaq Presario S6000CL Desktop PC support), it appears you might have to get a video card in order to enhance your graphics. Your computer came with integrated graphics, and though there is one video driver available on your computer, it can only be downloaded with the originally installed Windows XP operating system still in place. I know that's not exactly what you wanted to hear, but that is the situation you are looking at.

  • I want to use my Mac desktop as a portal for viewing my cable television via some kind of cord. Is this possible and what do I need to set this up?

I want to use my Mac desktop as a portal for viewing my cable television via some kind of cord. Is this possible and what do I need to set this up?

It can be done with analog but not digital thanks to "good 'ol" HDCP copy protection which apple (and most other manufacturers) unfortunately respect.
So you can take the analog output from your cable box (component -- 5 cables -- if it has it but generally they all have composite -- 3 cables) and feed it into some kind of converter or into some appropriate pci card for your mac pro.  But none of them are going to let you directly use the HDMI output from the box to your computer.
Bottom line, no single cord is going to work and it will never be the higher quality digital picture you get on your tv.
Some qualification:  There are boxes that I think support hdmi input.  Look at Blackmagic.  But I still don't think you can get around the HDCP from the cable box (might depend on the kind of cable box).

  • Upgrade video card for Late 2005 PowerMac G5

I am looking for an upgrade video card for a Late 2005 PowerMac G5, which has the PCI-Express slots. I need at least 256 MB of VRAM.
Since this computer is a discontinued model, there doesn't seem to be too many options for video cards. I've seen some cards like the NVidia 6600 or 6800, or even ATI's X800, but they appear to be difficult to find.
The one card that is readily available still is the ATI X1900, which looks great, but a little on the pricey side ($349).
I did notice the NVidia 7300 GT, which is more moderately priced ($145), but it only mentions being an upgrade card for the Mac Pro. Will this also work with the PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) model? I would hate to buy this video card and then find out that it won't work.

The only available upgrade card for the Late 2005 G5s is the X1900GT (aka G5 Edition). It's basically on par with the nVidia 7800GT that was available as a BTO option.
You can get the 7800GT and QuadroFX 4500 as replacement parts, but they're exorbitantly priced.
The Mac Pro cards won't work (even though they're also PCI-Express) due to the ROM on the card. It's only setup to work with the Mac Pro's EFI boot system and doesn't have the necessary code to work with the PowerMac's Open Firmware boot system.

  • I got an old Apple G5 shell from Goodwill. I'd like to salvage the Superdrive and use it as an external drive for my Apple laptop. Is this possible, and what cables would I need if so?

I got an old Apple G5 shell from Goodwill. I'd like to salvage the Superdrive and use it as an external drive for my Apple laptop. Is this possible, and what cables would I need if so?
    Other info is available:
    Superdrive MFG date: Sept 2009
    Model: DVR-118LBK DVD-R/RW Writer Unit
My Macbook is: Mid-2010, running Mavericks
    Thanks in advance, God bless!

That's a nice Pioneer DVD±RW drive - and an upgraded replacement for the original optical drive that shipped with that G5.  For a finished look, you'd want to install it in an external enclosure for 5.25" IDE/ATAPI drives that converts it to USB connectivity.  Because SATA optical drives have replaced ATAPI drives in recent years, the selection is getting more limited for a new enclosure, although used ones can undoubtedly be found at ebay.  Here's an example of one, although it only features USB connectivity.  You can also find enclosures that have both FireWire and USB connectivity, which for Mac users is beneficial.  Booting the computer (if needed) by a FireWire-connected device is generally more reliable than USB booting.  If this isn't important to you, then a USB-only enclosure would be adequate.  The enclosure will have directions, but essentially all you need to do is plug in the power cable and data ribbon cable and then secure the drive to the bottom plate of the enclosure with the included machine screws.

  • Upgrading video card for adobe CS6

Hello I have a Mac pro part number FA356LL/A - it is currently using NVIDIA Geforce 7300GT
I am wondering if this can be upgraded to a more current card the system itself is working great till I installed Adobe CS6.
It still works fine but the redraw tends to stall and give weird artifacting at random times
I have 2 screens 24" EIZO main display for color
15 inc NEC for pallets and extra realestate
Any help on this matter woud be great
    thank you
    Ben

I am hoping that the video card is the problem, and I am going to replace this now as It has become completely unusable. I never know when the displays will go into a horizontal line frenzy and the only way out of it is to force the power button. Not cool

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

  • HT1270 Hi, I have bought macbook pro a year back and it has 4 GB RAM and its mid 2012 model can u tell me whether if i give the macbook for upgradation of memory will they do it and what would be the cost

Hi, I have bought macbook pro a year back and it has 4 GB RAM and its mid 2012 model can u tell me whether if i give the macbook for upgradation of memory will they do it and what would be the cost.

You need to take your MacBook Pro to your Apple store genius bar and check that they will do the upgrade for you...price for 4 GB memory used to be $200 but you will have to check with them for the current cost.
You can also check with OWC, http://www.macsales.com and see what their cost is and decide if you want to do it yourself.  Cost will be about half of that at the Apple store.

I opened an attachment on an email claiming to be an order confirmation from Amazon.  I now have several copies of it on my desktop and can't delete them.

It is highly likely that this attachment is malware. It's also highly likely that it is Windows malware. So you're probably not infected with anything. What is the exact name of the attachment you opened? Please be sure to include whatever extension the filename has (such as .exe, .pdf, .doc, etc).
What happens when you try deleting the attachment files from your desktop? Is there an error message of some kind? If so, what is the exact error message you're seeing? (Please don't try to paraphrase it... tell us the precise wording of the message.)
