Upgrading w/o a backup

I know it's a no-no.  I mistakenly posted this question over in the MacBook Pro forum when it really belonged here.  I have been trying since Lion came out to buy an external hard drive to backup my internal 500gb on my laptop but I keep coming up short.  Never enough to buy Lion AND another drive.  I have worked in IT since the original Mac was released in 1984 (and got mine that June) and know the potential pitfalls of an OS upgrade with or without system backup.
However, with Mountain Lion soon on the horizon I would still like to put Lion on my mid2009 Macbook Pro.  Does anyone here have experience with an in-place Snow Leopard to Lion upgrade?   If so, what went wrong?  Anything that good prep could avoid?  I mostly use my laptop for Internet browsing and downloads plus Internet radio, so even if I have to reinstall some apps I could if necessary.  I did buy an 8gb thumb drive to put the Lion installer on so re-installs might be a little easier.
Any thoughts?  How great a risk am I taking with no backup of current internal booting hard drive?

Murph'y law will mean that if it can go wrong and you dont want it to go wrong, it WILL go wrong.
You must always have a backup incase things go pear shaped.

I have been using a WD Passport with Time Machine on my iMac.  Since I upgraded to Mavericks, the backup no longer works.  What do I need to do?
I assume that upgrading the WD SmartWare is irrelevant as it is not being used.  Should I upgrade just as a precaution?
One complication is that I have renamed my user since the last time I backed up.

the problem is with the WD Passport drives.   I also have one, and since upgrading to 10.9 I can no longer use mine either.  See if this solution works for you: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23943103#23943103

  • IWeb wont work after MAC OS X upgrade, and restore from backup

I upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.2, and reinstalling iWeb 08, and restoring my website from backup, iWeb does not recognize my existing website. When I opened iWeb for the first time, it had the option for creating a new website, not recognizing my existing website. I could not see an option to "open" or "import". How can I get it to recognize my existing iWeb website?
We website is located in my <user home directory> Root directory. I have also tried placing it in the <user home>\Sites directory and relaunching iWeb with no success.

I made a full backup of the hard drive before I repartitioned it for MAC OS X. I Once the install completed, I copied over the <user>\Domain-Name. I wasn't aware of the one in >library>application support. I went and looked on my backup and could not see anything resembling my domain name or iweb under >library>application support. Can you give me a little more information on this or where it could possibly be? I'm sure that I'm really close to getting this figured out.
    Thanks!

  • Tiger to Snow Leopard upgrade/drive reformat/data backup

I know that, technically, upgrading from v10.4.11 to v10.6.3 shouldn't cause the loss of any data or files, but obviously I'm going to back up everything any way. I have an external hard drive but I don't think it's got enough space to copy all of my uncompressed stuff to completely. Right now, my plan is to move the data from Mac to external HD to PC where I have enough space to store everything. But, I was reading about making a disk image, which leads me to my first question:
    1. If I'm planning to upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6, is creating a disk image even a viable option? Or would that reverse the upgrade completely?
Another thing I wanted to do, since I'm installing the upgrade, is to reformat the hard drive of my MacBook. I purchased the Mac Box Set 10.6.3-INT product #MC680Z/A.
    2. Is this upgrade something that I will have to install while my MacBook is in its current state (v10.4.11, no reformatted HD)? Or, if I go into Disk Utility and erase/reformat the drive prior to 10.6.3 install, will I be able to install snow leopard from the box set I ordered as I would be able to reinstall Tiger from the Install disks that came with the computer?
    Thanks!

I strongly suggest getting another ext HD, large enough to accommodate all your stuff and put a bootable backup/clone onto it before proceeding. Then, boot into it and ensure that it works and looks like the original. There's no reason to erase and reformat the MB's HD. That's so windoze-centric. Forget it. Then you can install on either. Leave disk images to banish from your head, they're basically useless in this scenario. With the boxed set, install Snow Leopard, install iLife and iWork, run Software Update, repair permissions, and restart. After running for a week or so, update the backup/clone with your new OS.

  • Time machine backup problem with upgrade to Lion - Choose Backup Disk button non-existant

Hi, I just upgraded my mac mini to Lion and have encountered a problem with by Time Machine. It no longer sees my networked drive for back up. So, I followed the instructions on this site http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/ and get to item 6b. and have a problem I have not been able to sort out. Instead of the button "Choose Backup Disk" on the Time Machine window, I have a button "Select Disk" with a button "Options" under it. When I click "Select Disk" I get a window promtping me to "Set Up Other Time Capsule" and clicking that takes me to a window for AirPort Utility. (screen shot )
Anyone know why I don't have the right button for starters and why I can't access any drives on my machine at all? I followed the web instructions on the site I mention above because initially I had an error about AFP, so suspected the drive set up here (it is my work) is incompatible.
(The only IT guy we have is on vacation for 2 weeks and then I am on vacation for 2 weeks and can't wait a month in order to back up! Thought I would try here to see if I can get answers before I am away.)
    Thanks in advance!

i had a similar problem when I first installed Lion last year.  It seems that some network NAS products need a firmware update to work with Lion.  I contacted the manufacturer and they helped me out.  I am using a Synology NAS system.  Problem solved after firmware update.

  • New iPhone upgrade and messed up backups

I upgraded four iPhones recently, and I backed up all of the phones to my computer, then did a restore from previous backup. All went well until today, when I wanted to back up my iPhone, when I noticed that it was backing up every new phone that I bought. I checked the summary and it showed all apps from all the other phones being backed up, which was strange, but, I then deleted all of the previous backups from iTunes, then backed up the old phones again and then tried to do a restore from previous backup, and it was still restoring all apps from all phones. If anyone has any idea of what happened or how to correct it so that each individual phone backs up and restores only what is on that phone. Thanks in advance.

Try ti reinstall the iOS software so it is AS a ny iPhone and the install the back-up to the iphone. And rember that you Can mack the back-up to icoud. on the iPhone and that Way when you signet in to yous Apple acount on yous iPhone Can get the back-up

  • Doing a clean install/upgrade, restoring from TM Backup

I am going to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac, currently running Lion. After I do a clean install of Lion, can I then restore settings and applications from the TM backup made before the upgrade or will this overwrite newer files created by the Lion clean install?
    Salnews

If I understand correctly a clean install wipes the hard drive which is my intent. Merely installing Mountain Lion over Lion is not going to clear unwanted apps, etc.
I believe I found my answer elsewhere which states it would be better  for me to reinstall apps rather than restoring from Time Machine backup  since I would be copying some stuff I'm trying to get rid of.

  • Can't backup iPad air on iCloud after upgrade to iOS8 - no "backup now" button

Hi all, after upgrading 2 ipad air's to iOS8, I can't back them up, or restore for that matter. Going into the iCloud->storage->manage storage menu I can't find any backup or restore buttons anywhere.
    anyone else have this problem?

With iOS 8 the backup button has been moved, it's now in the list of options on the Settings > iCloud screen (iCloud Drive, Photos, Mail, Contacts etc - Backup is the third last option on that list)

  • Restore lost data after software upgrade without having a backup

    Hi!
Yesterday I upgraded to 10.1.0.418 via BB Link and all my data (contacts, apps, photos etc.) was lost. It happens every time I upgrade the software (I did it 3 times) and I am sick of this! Could you tell me please, is there a way to restore the data I had before upgrading without a backup made before the upgrade?
    Thanks!

You must have made a previous backup.

  • Upgrading main hard drive - backup questions

    Hello,
I have been constantly running out of disk space on my main HD and need to upgrade my Mac Pro with a bigger one. (3.0 ghz quad xeon, snow leopard)  I would like to know if I can utilize Time Machine to do the backup & restore. Up to this point I have only used Time Machine as a backup, but I heard it can be used for upgrading/restoring as well.
If anyone has any tips or links on the best way to do this, it will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Were I you I would just clone the drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
You can boot from the clone, prep the new drive, then restore the clone.

  • After Leopard upgrade can't burn backups to dvd, don't have "SuperDrive"???

I used the upgrade install option for Leopard and I know the are issues being reported with alot of applications but I haven't seen this one so here it goes..
Backup had an update to be Leopard compatible and so far it will backup just fine to my iDisk.
However if I try to backup to a dvd the driver that shows on the Backup program for burning says SuperDrive and I have a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06 drive soooo when I try to backup to dvd it fails. I'm guessing the failure is the Superdrive vs the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06 drive. System profiler states for burning I have the Pioneer drive.
The reason I would like to backup to dvd is simple, it's QUICK and since I upgraded to Leopard and did not do a "clean" install I want to be ready if that is what I will need to do to solve any issues that may arise from upgrade vs install method for Leopard. I want my info safe. I am not sure if I do a "clean" install that my info backed-up in Time Machine will be readily available or if I will have to erase my external hard drive that I use for TM to start with a "clean" Time Machine too.
Any suggestions? Enlightenment? Please be kind I am still so new at this and I have alot to learn.

    Hi
There are two kinds of DVDs that You can burn/create with the same sort of DVD that You bought.
    • Data-DVD - When DVD is seen on DeskTop and files added to this ===> Result is a Data-DVD and this can only be read by a computer - no DVD-Player can play it
    • Video-DVD - Is the kind of DVDs that plays on DVD-players and to do this You must use a Video-encoding-burning program as iDVD or Roxio Toast™ or DVD-Studio Pro. It encodes the video in a proper way but also it structures the material in a way a DVD-Player can use. Can not be done (as far as I know of) via DeskTop/Finder.

  • IPhoto upgrade prompt after exterior backup??

Prior to travelling to Jamaica, I decided to back up my MacBook Pro in the event my MB is stolen.  I am particularly concerned about my iPhoto collection.  I attached WD My Passport Studio and let it run overnight.   This morning it looked like it had completed its task.   However, upon clicking on the back up, I noticed only photos up to and including those dated 2009 were on the backup.   When I tried to open iPhoto I got the message THE PHOTO LIBRARY NEEDS TO BE UPGRADED TO WORK WITH THIS VERSION OF IPHOTO even though I was using it yesterday prior to the backup.   More puzzling, when I click on PICTURES in Finder, it reveals the same dated photos but nothing current, yet if I click on ALL MY FILES, all my photos are there.   I'm nervous about upgrading iPhoto, and wondering why I can't find my current photos on my backup.   I leave the day after tomorrow, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!   I purchased my MacBook Pro in August, 2012, using OS 10.7.5  and have always downloaded any updates to which I am alerted.

How did you backup your library to the EHD?  By a simple copy, i.e. drag and drop?  What format is the EHD.  It should be OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.
Can you open the library on your boot drive OK?

As you can see below the upgrade path that you mention is supported.I asume that you have the latest SP version on Windows Server 2008 Standard.

As upgrade definition we consider "If you want to keep the same hardware and all the server roles you have set up without flattening the server,
upgrading is the way to go—and there are lots of ways to do it. In the classic upgrade, you go from an older operating system to a newer one, keeping your settings, server roles, and data intact. "
Do you think that it possible to share more information about the error?

    Quite possibly.
I don't know how long it takes to encrypt about 480 GBs, but it will clearly take quite a while.
See #31 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some info on encrypting your backups.
