Upgrading, what lens should I buy?

Photography started as a hobby for me, but now that I have built up the skills and experience I want to make it a profession. The camera I first bought was a Rebel T3, but I'm looking into upgrading to a Canon 5D mark ii. I have 3 lenses- a EF 50mm 1.4, the kit EF 70-200mm, and the kit EF-S 18-55mm. I really love using my 18-55mm but I know I won't be able to use it on the full frame camera. What's a good full frame lens that's kinda like the 18-55mm. I do have a budget and I love the canon EF 16-35mm, but that's way too expensive. I'm thinking about $500. Thanks!!

The only one that springs to mind in that price range is the EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS. For around twice your budget (less if you buy it used), the 24-105mm f/4L is very good.

  • What PSU should i buy?

Hey, i have an important question. I have seen a bunch of posts here on the forum about lack of juice out of PSU's with certain hardware configs....
I think i have the same problems here, flickering textures in games, when playing games they just quit and im back in windows.... and even sometimes it just hangs.... this is only when playing games or 3D rendering in 3D studio max.
    Here are my system specs.
    ESC K7S6A mainboard (bios version 1.0f )
    AMD Athlon XP 2400+

Is there any way to check if the power supply is definetly causing problems - I just bought am G4MX440 and after installing it (was using 32meg TNT2), game graphics are all screwey
    TO-AOT (blank screen)
Q3 (all i get in the menus is the firey surround 'quake 3')
GTA3 ('bout a hundred tiled menu windows)
After reading many of the posts I assumed it was my power supply, went back to where i bought it (both the pc and the card) to upgrade nah it's the card bring it back.

  • I have an iMac g5 it's about 9 years old, I want to buy adobe photoshop what version should I buy that will run well on a computer this old?

I have a 9 year old  iMac g5 and I'm about to start a photography course therefore would like to purchase and install photoshop.
I want to know if this iMac will load and run this software well, and if so what version should I buy for this old computer!

The  wording is confusing. I just tried one of the DLs and it is working. Whether it will actually install now, I have no idea. If the activation servers have been disabled (because of a technical issue), probably not. Whether this is only temporary, I have no idea. I would think Adobe would just withdraw the entire page if they wanted. From the time this first appeared a few weeks ago until now I know it was working and could be installed using the provided serial #s. There was nothing about needing to actually have purchased it originally.
    Ginger:
I downloaded CS2 from the Adobe site BEFORE this recent notice was posted and it is the only version that I have and use.
The new notice is VERY confusing, because if you were a prior purchaser of it originally, why would you need their newly supplied serial number (which is what I use since I was NOT a prior purchaser. But again, when I downloaded and installed CS2 there was no such notice).
I suggest that you see if it downloads, installs and works with that serial number, as free is always better than not!   (especially since it is known that iMac G5's are prone to hardware failure from bad capacitors! I had many of them...)

I don't know how strict the OS requirements are. I do know that my old G5 iMac, even upgraded to Leopard, was able to run CS2. In fact, using Rosetta, CS2 still runs on my Snow Leopard.
As you can see from the image, CS2 is running in my Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) environment in Parallels concurrently with Lion.

  • What license should i buy when buying  ebusiness suite

    Dear Sirs...
i am facing a problem of what license should i buy.
i would like to use oracle financials for example... as far as i know i can buy the financials license only if and only if i am installing this application on one server, so i should buy:
    oracle financial user licenses
now if i want to use clustering on the financials (for 2 servers each with one cpu), then i should buy the license of:
    oracle financial user licenses
oracle database server license x 2
    oracle clustering license x 2
    my question now is:
if i am installing financials on a server with 4 cpus, then the license that i will buy will be
    oracle financial user licenses
    is this correct???? or not?
please where can i find such oracle license details?
thanks for any help in advance
    best regards

    Dear Sir...
    just to make sure...
assume i have a company with 200 employees, i want to use finacials application, the application will be deployed on a single server with 4 cpus. the quantity of the license i should buy now is:
    1- 10% of the 200 users = 20 user license, or
    2- 10% of the 200 users =20 x 4 cpus = 80 user license, or
    3- 200 user license, or
    4- 200 x 4 = 800 user license ?
it is supposed i should buy 10% of the 200 users = 20 user license, but i am getting confused because terms of named user plus and cpu license.
is there anyone who can conform which one is correct?
    thanks in advance

  • What lens should I get for my 5dmk2?

I shoot a lot of everything mostly scenery and creepy stuff? Looking for a l lens have about 900 to spend!

I think you should get the 24-105. I don't know what your professors say but I assure you that this lens will satisfy all your photography needs. For its price and the quality you're getting its quite a good buy. The 24-105 is the most versitile lens on Canon's lineup. It can be a landscape lens at 24, a normal lens at 50, a portrait lens at 85, a tele at 105. Not to mention there is IS. If you're shooting fullframe 5dmkii i would assume you would want to use your camera's full capacity, and by utilizing Canon's L lens you can achieve the best results. And after saying this, referring to your budget of 900, you can choose between the two cheapest Ls. the 17-40 and the 24-105 (personally I would choose the 24-105).
If you have a higher budget get the 24-70 II. That is another all purpose lens. Great for landscape, portraiture, can also be used for macro as well!
I like DSLRs and a Gear Whore.
    Canon:
    Canon EOS 1Dx, EF 35mm f/1.4L USM, EF 50mm f/1.2L USM, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM IS II, EF 200mm f/2.0L IS USM
    Nikon:
Nikon D4, Nikon D800, Carl Zeiss Compact Prime CP.2 Super Speed 50mm T/1.5, Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II

  • I think I have mastered the "What camera should I buy" issue.

I have been doing research for months now on which camera is best.
I have looked at every model, every brand, read their specs and checked their features.
Things could change, but for now:
ONLY CAMERAS WITH A FIRE WIRE PORT AND A MINIDV TAPE WILL WORK WITH iMOVIE directly with EASE OF USE, BEST QUALITY and LEAST AMOUNT OF COMPRESSION ISSUES.
    Two choices:
    1. High Definition cameras:
Conclusion: They all suck. It is a question of which one ***** the least. In my opinion it is the Canon HV20 ($1099.99). It has the best features (I love the 24p mode) for the money. I think Apple agrees with me, they sell it in the Apple Store. If only it had a decent 3CCD lens that worked well in low light, it would be perfect. If you are only going to shoot in good light, no problem.
Why I think they suck? NONE of the HD consumer level cameras have inputs for analogue and high definition video for recording from older equipment like VCRs and new equipment like cable boxes that output HD TV. This means you cannot record your favorite HD TV program OR MOVIE and make a HD DVD (Blue-ray or HD-DVD) with no loss of quality.
NOTE: The upper end cameras like the Sony HDR-FX1 ($3699,99) and the Canon XL-H1 (7,999.99) are the only cameras that don't suck, but the prices do.
    WARNING ABOUT HD
YOU WILL NEED A POWERFUL COMPUTER LIKE THE NEW MAC PROS WITH 2 GIG OF RAM AND HUGE HUGE AMOUT OF HARD DRIVE STORAGE and Final Cut Pro TO BE HAPPY WORKING WITH HIGH DEFINITION VIDEO.
    2. SD Cameras.
I like the Sony DCR-HC96. ($649.99) It has Analog-to-Digital Converter (with Pass Through) and Analog Audio/Video Input(s) (Multi A/V)
This camera is perfect for any Mac user with older machines like the dual G4's and older G5's.

I guess we can agree to disagree.
    From your post:
<ONLY CAMERAS WITH A FIRE WIRE PORT AND A MINIDV TAPE WILL WORK WITH iMOVIE directly with EASE OF USE, BEST QUALITY and LEAST AMOUNT OF COMPRESSION ISSUES.
<div class="jive-quote">That is not really correct. HDV camcorders do employ MiniDV tapes and connect via firewire, but do have compression issues due to the MPEG-2 recording format.
I said "The LEAST amount of compression issues" I did not say they do not have compression. SO YOU DID NOT UNDERSTAND.
    The you said:
<YOU WILL NEED A POWERFUL COMPUTER LIKE THE NEW MAC PROS WITH 2 GIG OF RAM AND HUGE HUGE AMOUT OF HARD DRIVE STORAGE and Final Cut Pro TO BE HAPPY WORKING WITH HIGH DEFINITION VIDEO.
<div class="jive-quote">Incorrect again. My iBook G4, 1.25 Ghz, 512 RAM handles HDV just fine (apart from the slow capture speed) and if your final output is an SD DVD, there's always the possibility to let the camera do the downconversion and edit in SD.
I said "To be happy working with high definition video". It should have been clear to you that I am saying NO SLOW CAPTURE, and CREATING AN HD MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH. FINISH meaning Blu-ray or HD-DVD (with software from the future) in less than 6 hours. Your little G4 with 512 RAM will NOT be able to handle that when it becomes available. I hate how slow my MDD dual G4 which I upgraded to 1.5 Gig of RAM performs when working with SD video. I would cry if I had to go your speed. (Ergo NOT HAPPY) You said "If your output is SD" I did not say SD, I was referring to HD so,,,YOUR WRONG AGAIN.
My point is that HD cameras are just not fully compatible with the Mac, and most (as normal) support Windowz with USB2 more than OSX.
We cannot make full use of HD on our Macs until we can make HD DVDs.
    Do you get it now?

  • Home Hub 3 "upgrade" Which router should I buy ins...

    Hello to you all.
Set up my "upgrade" to HH3.
Wow! What a disappointment. I can bearly get 6m away from the thing before it starts to drops wifi N signal. Laptop won't hold N wifi. Tablets won't connect when in the other end of the house (modern bungalow)
Have tried disconnecting all manner of electrical devices to avoid any electrical interference and I have tried all the channels on the router.
I have gone back to my old HH1 for now and waddya know.......I get an "Excellent" signal all over the house (although it is a wifi G not N signal)
How this thing can be sold as a wireless N router; God only knows!! Hello BT.......I live in a house with walls made of bricks and mortar not paper and pva glue.
    Anyway here is my question.
Which is the best wireless N 2.4Ghz router that I can buy for under £100 that will replace this HH3 thing and provide me a reliable wireless N signal?
    Thanks
    John

    Hi all
I have a router problem..........I think.......Any suggestions as to what can be done or any suggestions for a good sub £100 router with antenna that could provide a better service than the HH3 would be gratefully received.
(the HH3 woud be great if they called it what it really is i.e. the Room Hub3)
    Here is the problem.
My broadband connection is ok according to BT, as is my phone line but for some reason the wireless performance of my  HH3 is very poor. It drops wireless N signal once you loose sight of the hub and the Mbps speeds drops are massive (down to 1.0 Mbps from 144.5). I can not get an usefull wireless N signal in the next room; usefull being better than a 54Mbps wireless G signal of excellent 5 bar strength. My daughter finds it very amusing that she can connect to a neighbouring wifi signal (wireless N) that is some 25m away in a different building but not her own home network (also N wireless) whose router she can see from her room with the door open.
I have tried to move the hub around. I have been on the phone to "Help" for hours so I have tried all the channels on the router and they have tweaked whatever they tweak over the phone. Wireless N enabaled devices only connect well to the wireless signal at distances of less than 7m (line of sight - no walls). Once walls and further distance are put into the equation then the signal drops away and the speed tails off exponentially.
If I revert to using the G signal on my old laptop by changing network adapters then I am able to hold a strong signal for longer but get a much slower Mbps speed (slower than the constant 54Mbps that is emmited at a constant 4-5 bar strength all over the house by the old wireless G Home Hub 1) which rather defeats the object of having wireless N. The idea was to be able to stream video such as bbc iplayer and the like without the annoying hangs that happens at slow data transfer speeds.
The old HH1 has a stronger signal and a faster speed than the new HH3 when distance from router is taken into account but that is no use if I need to get the use of a strong and faster wireless N signal
The only oprions open to me at the moment are either reverting back to HH1 and accepting that HH3 is useless as a router for anything except a garden shed or moving everyone into the room that the HH3 is located every time that they need to connect to the wireless network, which kind of defeats the whole point of wireless technology.
Any suggestions as to what can be done or any suggestions for a good sub £100 router with antenna that could provide a better wireless N service than the HH3
    Thanks in advance
    John

  • What macbook should I buy for video editing?

I'm an indie filmmaker and I need to have a macbook that I can take with me, so I can do editing. I never owned one before. (I have an iMac at home) I would like to keep it around $1800 (with tax&Shipping). I've seen some refurbished 2011 models here on Apple way under that amount.
I need one that will able to handle Adobe CS5.5 and Final Cut without any problems. I've been told 512MB was more  than enough to run FCP. Should I just go with the 1gb video ram model instead? I just don't want a macbook pro that has issues with playback and rendering issues. I found a 17" online for $1900 with 1GB Video Card. Is that considered a good deal?
In the future should I consider putting in a SSD drive in the to help speed things up?
    Thanks in advance.

It doesnt matter really what macbook u buy.. If u buy the latest ones they have usually i5 and i7 processors which are quite powerful for Logic 9. The important bit is to have a good amount of ram 4-6 GB is quite good
Also if you make a practise to run just Logic while ur working on it and close other applications it should be flying.. Althought i am pretty bad at following this habit..  I have a macbook pro with the following..
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Works MAGIC for me

  • What CPU should i buy for my Mac Mini 1.1?

    Hi,
I've bought my first ever Mac off eBay for a great price, only thing is it's an old Mac Mini and it probably is going to need upgrading. Although i've never had a Mac i've been upgrading PCs for years so i'm not necessarily new to getting my hands dirty. I've sourced a new hard drive for it as it only had 80gb and i've looked over many tutorials and videos on how to replace it and i'm feeling pretty confident on replacing it. Thing is though, I thought whilst i'm already opening the case to upgrade the hard drive should i upgrade the 1.66 ghz intel core duo CPU to an intel core 2 duo? I've look on eBay and saw quite a few, would this one fit?
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-2-Duo-SLB3P-T3400-2-16Ghz-1M-667-CPU-/22080 4297406?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&ha...
If not, what about this one?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140672958432&clk_rvr_id=303 473030963&mfe=sidebar#ht_500wt_1156
    Or even this one?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270801235988&clk_rvr_id=303 471376395&mfe=sidebar#ht_535wt_1031
    What's the difference between them?
Don't really want to spend too much, but if I have to i'll wait a bit and save up some money. Do you think this is worth it? As the CPUs on eBay with the M socket are only £10-20 so I thought for that price it must be? Can you offer any other advice or tips?
This is my first post here and I am hoping you can help,
    Thanks in advance,
    Josh

Au contraire. The 1.1 mini certainly can take a CPU upgrade, but the process is certainly not for the faint of heart. Google will give you many examples.

  • What computer should I buy for ID5.5?

I have an opportunity to do some work-at-home design using Indesign. The computer I'm using is a tired old PC. Dual 1.8 GHZ, 2 GB RAM.
It runs it but it's not fast.
Any advice on specific machines? I need to keep it under $1K so Mac Pro is out. But how are the minis?
I'm not counting out a new PC either. Just don't know what's good for this work.
I won't be running Photoshop much, maybe a touchup here and there and a little illustration art. But mainly just layout of magazines, newsletters, etc.
    Thanks for all input!

5.5 wont be supported if you buy a new mac, and they all come with Yosemite now, and you CAN NOT DOWNGRADE ANY MAC to any OS lower than what it came out of the box with: it will come with Yosemite and that is your only option unless something NEWER comes along, but Macs are UPGRADE ONLY unless you want to break the warranty and hack the API (you can't just stick a disk in there and say "go ahead, I don't care"
Some users are having no issues with Yosemite and CS5.5, however I'm in a dual production crisis with ID5.5 on Yosemite vs ID5.5 on Mavericks on new i7 iMacs I've been supplying to a company. The resize in ID5.5 and Yosemite is so slow it hangs 3 different systems running Yosemite where they become unresponsive for about 10 minutes while the screen refreshes, but that behavior doesn't exist on the systems running Mavericks using the same files. I am looking at either returning those macs or offloading production to other systems but CC is far less of an option than virtualizing Win XP on those macs at this point.

  • My hard drive is failing, need a new one.  What kind should I buy for a Mac osx 10.4.11 Tiger.

Also I have backed up all my data on a mercury elite external hard drive.  But it would not allow me to clone my drive.  Possible due to the error, failing hard drive.  How would I get my data back on the new drive?

You can run you Mac from an external harddrive.  I do not notice much difference when I run from an external drive.
You need to use a coloning program to get the external hd to boot.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

  • I have a Macbook 10.5.8 (Intel Core 2 Duo) and I need to update the software. What software should I buy snow leopard, lion, maverick?

I need to update my Macbook as many applications do not run in my computer.
    It's a Macbook 10..5.8 Intel Core 2 Duo, with graphics X3100.
I don't want to loose money, so I need to know if I have to buy first the Snow Leopard and then going for the Lion or others, or if I can buy directly Lion...
    What would you recommend_
    Thank you!

Yes.  Neil's is the right approach.
In my view, Snow leopard is an excellent OS for that model comnputer.   You must remember that many programs that are part of Leopard and Snow Leopard would be lost if you went higher, and that is if you could go higher.
The DVD you will buy is 10.6.3 and will need updating to 10.6.8, plus the Combo updater to clear the needs for the best security.   Snow leopard does not appear to be supported now.
