Upgrading while keeping unlimited Data

I am aware of VWZ kicking you off your grandfathered unlimited plan if you use an upgrade on that line, but I also want to ask about how I can get a new phone and keep my unlimited data..
So my families setup is as follows,
1 smartphone grandfathered into unlimited data (myself)
1 4GB a month tiered smartphone from the Double data promotion (Dad)
1 feature phone (sister)
1 basic phone (mom)
Sister and Mom are due for upgrades (Sister used my upgrade a year ago)
So I just broke the screen on my Galaxy Nexus and I need to get something new, However, like I said, I am not willing to give up my Unlimited data..
So I am wondering if any of these plans would work for me..
a) Transfer the upgrade to my Dads line and buy my new phone, activate it on his line, then reactivate his phone on his line and then move the new phone to my line.
b) "Upgrade" my sister or mom to a smartphone line and buy the new phone and then move it to my line and send them back to their basic plan..
I am hoping that someone can tell me that one of these will work.. I dont want to have to buy a new phone off contract, buy I will should all else fail..
Thanks for your help,
   Swan

A)  Might not work. He could lose his 4 GB promotion.
B)  Should work. Be prepared for a couple of messy bills. Since data is billed in advance they will get billed for 2 months on the next bill. Then of course when you swap back the next month after that, you'll get a credit for the one month and the most of the next month minus the one day they had data.
I do agree with mrpersoy, I wish Verizon would stop allowing that.
A system edit should be in place that recognized an meid or imei that came out after unlimited data went away that should prevent thus malarkey. Just like the system edit that allows smart phones from per November 2008 to be activated without a data plan. I hate people who try to get over on the "system".
When Verizon themselves says it's perfectly fine to do they aren't actually getting anything over the system. Verizon could ends this by simply having a rule where a meid can't be swapped to another line for at least 30 days.

  • Upgrade to iphone 5 and keep unlimited data from an old blackberry?

    To Whom this may concern,
I currently have a family plan with 5 lines (1 basic phone, 2 iphone 4s, and 1 blackberry bold). Both iphone 4s phones have 2gb of Internet data a month and the blackberry has unlimited internet data. I have 2 upgrades on my family plan, the iphone 4s and blackberry. If I transfer the upgrade from the 4s to the basic phone and then get the new iphone 5 from the basic phone upgrade (I would have to get the 2gb data plan when i purchase iphone 5 for the contract price), can I then put the iphone 5 on the blackberry line (basically just switch phones) to keep my unlimited data, then put the basic phone back where it was and cancel the 2gb data plan (not get charged the $30 for the month)? I have read and heard that this can happen and was wondering if I could do it.
Any help and if would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if this has already been posted.
    Thanks Guys

If the iPhone 4S, already has the 2GB data plan and it is eligible for an upgrade, why don't you order the iPhone 5 on that line?  You would extend the contract on the iPhone 4S line and then you can use the iPhone 5 on the BlackBerry line.

  • Upgrade to iPhone 5 and keep unlimited data.. will this work???

    Here is my situation..
The wife and I upgraded to the iPhone 4's right when Verizon got them, and got the unlimited data plan.  Now as I understand it, to upgrade to the iPhone 5 directly, I have to choose a new plan since unlimited is no longer offered, or I can purchase a new phone at full retail or from a 3rd party and still keep the unlimited.
Now, we have been planning to get 2 more lines for our oldest sons this year.  Our current plan is in my wifes name. I think I should be able to start a NEW account in my name, order 2 iPhone5's with the shared plan and get them all activated.  Then simply switch phones.
I see no problem with doing this.. but there may be some fine print somewhere.
Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Ok here is what you do. get 2 new lines and get the iPhone 5 for those 2 new lines.then move the iPhone's 5 to y'all's lines. then give your kids yalls old iphones this should work anything else may make  you lose your unlimited data.  for the 2 new lines yes you will have to day for data..
    Hope this helps

  • Transfer Upgrade - Keeping Unlimited Data Plan

We have a family plan with 5 devices.  Two of the lines have unlimited data, one has the $30/2gb plan, and two are basic phones.  We have several upgrades available since the basic phones haven't been upgraded regularly.
The person with the $30/2gb plan recently upgraded to an Iphone 4S in April, but now she has her eye set on the Iphone 5 when it comes out.
If she upgrades to the Iphone 5 in October, can I use her old Iphone 4S and keep my Unlimited plan?
(I wouldn't technically be upgrading my line.  Only her line would be an upgrade.  I would just be using the "discarded" phone.  I have switched back and forth between my current phone and my old phone before without issue when I left my current phone at work.  However, I am just worried there might be some footnote in the new plans that says you can't do this.)

I was informed by Verizon Customer Service that, after June 28, Transfer Upgrades of a subsidized phone to a line with the Unlimited Feature would automatically result in the loss of that Unlimited Feature. What remains a gray area to me is if the subsidized phone was purchased prior to June 28 and then subsequently transferred to the Unlimited Line. Verizon is tracking all subsidized phone purchases from their store, so it seems there may be a risk unless Verizon is also factoring in the date of subsidized purchase (pre- or post- June 28). Time will tell for sure.
WOW, that is a new one... I am going to have to check this out with the couple of Verizon people I know. This would be very interesting to know if it is true..

  • Keeping unlimited data buying used phone confusion

Hello, looking for a little help and clarity here if possible. I have an unlimited data plan from years ago and would like to keep it. I have been using one of the first motorola droid phones and it is just way out of date with the 3G. I understand that I can keep my data plan if I pay full price for a new phone or buy a used one from swappa, ebay, etc. I've decided to buy a used phone but I want to make sure that the phone I buy will work properly at 4G while keeping my unlimited data plan. I am mainly confused by CDMA and GSM and HSPA+ and LTE and unlocked etc. I know to buy an official Verizon phone, but when I look at the specs, they all are different. Some use CDMA, some use GSM, some use both. Then there is HSPA+ and LTE Does any of this matter? Will I be able to use any of those phones and upgrade to 4G as well, as long as they have the Verizon stamp? Or is there a specific criteria I need to be aware of in order for everything to go smoothly? I hope the questions make sense.
A little clarity on this is much appreciated, and any other crucial info I might be missing. Just want to make sure I don't make an expensive mistake.
    Thanks so much

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've found that I almost always have signal using Verizon, when friends standing next to me do not using other carriers. Will using a GSM/Verizon phone limit my signal service?
Here are a couple I am looking at. Thanks for taking a look.
The description for both of these say they are factory unlocked...

  • Return or exchange Galaxy S3 and keep unlimited data?

I have preordered a Galaxy S3 and it's been shipped already, should be delivered on Monday. After finding out about the encrypted bootloader on this phone I'm not sure I want it anymore (I'll save that rant for somewhere else). If I return the device will I keep my unlimited data? I ordered it prior to June 28th. I've read conflicting info about restocking fees. Do I need to refuse delivery from Fedex or can I accept delivery and go through normal return methods without being charged a fee? Paying $35 to return a phone that's still in its shrink wrap seems ridiculous.
I'm also trying to decide whether I'd prefer a Galaxy Nexus. I know that if I return the S3 and then try to re-use my upgrade, I'll lose unlimited data. Is there a way for me to do a direct exchange of one device for the other, so that I'm not technically cancelling one upgrade and re-using it?

I would just refuse delivery if you don't want the phone. If you
return this phone your upgrade will fall under the new upgrade after June 28,
2012 and as such you will have to move to the new plans when you upgrade at
subsidized prices. You do have the right to return for exchange I was told by VZW rep
but then again your mileage may vary as to what you do.  It is not a set thing and no one
at VZW will always to the samething in all locations.  Again buyer beware.  The last phone I
returned by just not accepting delivery which was just late last year VZW
charged the restocking fee but I mentioned to the person I called that it was
still not opened.  They said the phone
still had to go back as an opened phone as they had to open the package to make
sure everything was in the box as the shrink wrap could have been re-shrunk by
someone else in shipping.  They told me
they did not take any returns without an inspection of the contents.  I hope your mileage will vary with your
return.  Once they go back they go to
refurbished phones?  I have been seeing
people complain they are getting new phones with no battery cover and VZW tells
them to return them which I am sure VZW will charge the re-stocking fee
anyway.  These issues are why I don’t
order phones off the web site.  I only
    purchase from a VZW store.

  • Has anyone else run in to the dishonesty of Verizon when it comes to keeping unlimited data?

I have been a Verizon customer for about 20 years.
I heard about people saying that their customer service was no good, but I personally haven't had problems with them.... UNTIL NOW :-(
When they stopped offering the unlimited data plan I was disappointed, but I followed the what I was told and purchased the phones for the full price so that I wouldn't loose my unlimited data.
When I went into Best Buy the rep told me about an alternate upgrade that I could do and upgrade a phone on my plan and switch it to my phone number.  That way it will show that I never did an upgrade on my personal line.  So I went along with it making it clear that I didn't want to loose my unlimited data.  When she entered the information in the software would let her override something there and she called Verizon customer service.  The representative assured me that it was standard procedure and that the unlimited data would be retained with no problems.
3 days later.  it wasn't resolved and even though my line shows that it has not been upgraded the plan was changed.   Another "ticket" was submitted and denied. Basically they just deny tickets without reviewing the specifics.  I then spoke to another representative that said there should be no problem and that they see this type of situation all of the time.  She submitted another ticket requesting the unlimited data to be put back on my account.  I didn't hear anything from anyone.
2 weeks later they I talk to another representative that tells me the same thing there shouldn't be a problem the previous representative submitted the requests improperly and that he has dealt with this before and that it should go through no problem.  I had no choice, but to trust that this person knew what they were talking about, they kept telling me that there was nobody else I could talk to that it will go through.
I had to leave the country for a couple of weeks.  I come back and my account is still incorrect.  So I call again. This time I talk to Gyann (removed)... he said that he again "knows what he is doing"  he is putting the request it and that he will make sure that he takes care of me.  I also talk to his supervisor Sander (removed).   Who assured me that he would follow up with the submitted request and would call me back agh 10:30am eastern time to make sure everything was going through.  I waited for the call.. no call.  I called Sander at later that day only to get a voicemail.
I then called customer care again and they told me that in the notes Sander wrote that he called me and wasn't able to get a  hold of me.  There was no message on my phone and no missed calls in my call log.  when did he try to call?  Standly (removed) told me that the person that could escalate my issue is the supervisor that I have been dealing with, Sander, who I can't get a hold of and isn't calling me back.  Otherwise he is going to have to start from scratch.  I asked how I am supposed to escalate an issue wight he same person that i was dealing with if they generally don't  give out direct numbers and every customer service rep "will see the notes".
Here we go waiting more time tomorrow dealing with this again.
Point is Verizon doesn't care about their customers.  They make it difficult to correct any problems, but are sure on top of it when it comes to billing someone when they never agreed to the plan.

They care about customers, but unfortunately, they don't, and won't, care that you lost unlimited data. You will be the second person in two years that I've seen have unlimited data reinstated. They will do anything in their power to keep it away from you.

  • Can I change the minutes in my plan and still keep unlimited data?

I tried to search for this but was unable to locate.  I am aware that I can keep my unlimited data plan when I get a new phone.  However, is it voided if we change to a plan with more minutes?  We currently have 1400 minutes (Family plan) with 1 primary and 3 secondary lines and want to upgrade to 2000.  My line is a secondary line and has unlimted data for my Blackberry and I want to upgrade to iphone.  Thanks

Yep! The unlimited data pkg is associated with the line of service, which is your phone number, and the type of device that you have active on that line. Changing your price plan won't affect your data pkg at all.

  • Can I use my friend's upgrade with my Unlimited Data?

I know you can normally take a friend's upgrade by first activating it on his line, then switching phones. But what if I still have my Unlimited Data pak? Since I'm not getting a subsidized phone, I can still keep that, right?

    correct.

  • Example of why you can't keep unlimited data

There’s probably no better proving ground for 4G technologies than the International CES in Las Vegas. The show drew more than 150,000 in January, essentially bringing 4G to its knees.
I had brought a Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE mobile hotspot (MiFi 4510L) to the show, hoping to transfer some large video files while I was there. My first attempt to transfer a 500-Mbyte file came to naught when I noticed that only the violet LED on the device was blinking.
This meant that only 3G service was available. Throughout my entire stay at the show, I never saw the green light blink, indicating that Verizon’s 4G LTE service was available.
I ran a speed test on speedtest.net and got just 0.65 Mbits/s for the download speed and 0.36 Mbits/s for the upload speed (see the figure). That’s excruciatingly slow.
    http://electronicdesign.com/4g/ces-proves-4g-lte-still-has-long-way-go
Now do you see why Verizon can't just let everyone have unlimited data? Unless you think unlimited sub 1 Mbps data is better than capped 4G. Of course people who enjoy that should go with Sprint.

Hello petepetepete! If I were advised of the same, I'd be confused and upset as well. Without knowing which plan you have now, I would say that for any VZW representative to advise you that purchasing any model smartphone at full retail price would compel you to change your plan is likely inaccurate. The key here is your plan. If the plan you have now (regardless of the device model that you use with it) is so out of date that you'll have to migrate to new pricing, then the answer you were given was somewhat correct. Here are the facts:
Any time that you upgrade with Verizon Wireless with a discount (2 year pricing), you're asked to accept new terms and to migrate to the latest pricing. That's always been true in the 8 years I've been a customer and employee. We've also advised our customers that to activate a new or used device that was purchased at full retail price from us or a 3rd party may not require a change to plans or feature as long as said plan/feature is supported by the new device. An example of an incompatible plan would be one of the retired Alltel plans.
In either case, I hope this helps you. If you need me to take a closer look at your plan, please follow this link for instructions on how to send me a direct message through the Forums:

  • Help me keep unlimited data. reps being extremely rude and not helping...

So I don't want to make this long and boring so I'm going straight to the point. I am grandfathered in and I know there are many discussions on here about this but I need serious help. I don't know what to do. Long story short, I went to my local normal Verizon store and asked politely to be on the 12 month payment plan for a new phone. And I stressed I wanted to keep my unlimited data. No problem they said....45 limited later they come back and say sorry, we cannot do that. Doing the payment plan makes you sign a new 2yr contract. I was mad obviously but left politely not knowing any better. But it didn't seem right. So I called the 800 support number and they said there is no reason why they shouldn't have done that for me. The guy said he shouldn't of told me this BuT he told me that reps don't like doing that because they don't get as much If any commission for doing so. So he said they usually come up with a lame excuse like the one they told me. He told me to go right back in there and tell them that yes they are able to do that. So I did. I got a different rep and he was acting weird about it. Get this... I told him my situation and gave him a puzzled look when he explained he doesn't know what he can do, HE said "what's that condescending look for?" I justccan't believe he said that how unprofessional of him to call me, a customer or ten years condescending. I was astonished. But that's not even my point. He didn't know what todo so called the manager over and she claims to have spoke with the "president" and "CEO" of their Verizon in north east ohio, this was a wooster Ohio Verizon. And claims that they don't allow that and what I was originally told by the rep is true. That is changes the contract going on a payment plan the 12 month one not the edge. I told her what the 800 number has told me and she said they are wrong. PLEASE HELP ME :(  AGAIN, I was not rude or anything at all with them. They treated me like garbage because I want to keep my unlimited data. How can I do this? Can I go to another Verizon perhaps In Ashland Ohio and do the payment plan and keep my data? Sorry for the long question but any help would be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated. I am in wooster Ohio btw

        brant13,
I want to start off by saying, I am truly sorry for the way that you have been treated at that the store location. This is by no means how we run a business. I can assure you that if you do the Device Payment Plan http://vz.to/ZILXBT  that is for 12 months that you are able to keep the unlimited data plan. You can always go to the store location on Commerce Pky in Ashland, OH. That is a direct store location and they should be able to get you set up with out any kind of issues. Please keep us posted if you have any further troubles. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

  • Order for GS3 cancelled TWICE - Won't let us keep unlimited data

Preordered 2 Samsung Galaxy S3 phones on June 26 in order to keep our unlimited data plans. Unfortunately, Verizon's order processing team emailed me on July 3 saying our order was cancelled. I quickly called Verizon at (800) 483-7200 and asked "Becky" why my order was cancelled and it was because the shipping address was different from the billing address. The reason for this was because my girlfriend wouldn't be home to sign for the phones upon delivery so she wanted them shipped to my house since I would be home and would be the one setting them up so we use them that day. After being on hold for quite a long time, "Becky" finally got back to me and I told her to just ship the phones to the billing address so there wouldn't be any problems. She then put me on hold again and after about 7 min of waiting, she told me that the order has been placed and should arrive by July 12. Then I asked for a confirmation for the order but she could not provide one for me but she said she would call back when she was able to get one. Already this seemed like a bad sign.
A couple hours later, my girlfriend calls to tell me that our order has been cancelled AGAIN. I quickly call Verizon and speak to "Diego" who then transfers me to "Barbara" in telesales who places the order WITH UNLIMITED DATA but asks for a form of payment. I asked to just have it billed to the account but she said that the order exceeds the $400 limit for account billings. I don't have a credit card for this order so she calls my girlfriend whose name is on the account but my girlfriend doesn't answer since she's at work. I try to call my girlfriend with "Barbara" on the other line. She doesn't answer and my other call with "Barbara" is lost.
    Back to square one.
I call *611 from my phone to speak with "Tyrone" who tells me the same thing, the order exceeds $400 for billing and they would need another form of payment. Since the original order was CANCELLED, they can't use the original credit card. I decide to take care of this matter on my girlfriends day off and ask "Tyrone" if we would be able to retain our UNLIMITED DATA plan since we had originally ordered the phones before June 28 and he said there would be no guarantee and would most likely have to fill out an "inactive pricing request" or IRP (not sure of the actual name).
    I gave up after that.
Of course this is incredibly inconvenient and I'm close to just terminating our service with Verizon over this situation. We've been verizon customers for a little over 5 years and would hate to switch to another wireless provider but this is by far our worst experience with customer service. From my perspective, It seems that Verizon is doing all they can to prevent us from keeping our unlimited data plan for use with our GS3's. Also, judging by the previous topics and comments on this forum, it seems this problem with retaining unlimited data is widespread.
This is obviously not worth bringing into a small claims court but how are any of you current Verizon customers dealing with this? Is it even worth it to keep fighting this?

i wouldn't give up. they clearly show that you tried to order it prior to 6/28. i would call back again, but this time have everything in order.....your credit card, details of the first order, etc, etc. i've seen a few people here have luck with getting it straightened out. just be stern, but polite. you ordered it prior to 6/28 and they need to reinstate THAT order. and i agree that it's absurd to have an area in the order for shipping address if it can't be anything except the billing address.

  • Have you been successful porting your number and keeping unlimited data?

Hi , I am trying to save money by getting rid of my texting plan($20) and having Google Voice as my SMS provider. I want to keep my number so I will port my number to GV. For a 1-time fee of $20. The Problem is that during the process some people lose their UNLIMITED DATA package. I, of course don't want this to happen. I have searched the interwebs and found that this forum had the good information on it.

See post # 3 and # 85 for detailed instructions. I was in the process of doing it but Google Wallet denied my transaction because I needed to verify my account. This process takes 3 days. So I will wait and try again. I would like to know if the rest of the verizon community has been succesful or has regretted doing this.
I feel that this process should work and would like to keep this discussion open so other people can do the same. We all know sms and voice mins are cheap and carriers are just milking money from data plans.
PS. I felt # 85 was really straight forward
Joined the community to thank the OP - and to add in another success story. Before I start my 'experience share', I think its pertinent to mention that I have the Galaxy S4 [Android]
Started the GV Port on Monday at about 3PM. Provided GV with personal details, phone number, billing PIN (you can set one up or change your current PIN on the VZW website after logging on to your account) and my account number (excluded the -00001 after my account number as suggested by other posters on this thread). Google charged me $20 to complete the port.
On Tuesday morning, approximately at about 11AM, I logged into my VZW account and requested a new number (VZW's website states that this process is free if done online). At this time, my GV Port status showed "Number Change Pending". Once the new number was assigned to me by VZW (the number is issued instantly), I had to turn my phone off and wait a few minutes before turning it back on. When I turned my phone back on, it showed that the new number was active (no VZW notifications - just tried a test call from my landline).
Almost 24 Hours down to the minute (so at about 3PM on Tuesday), I got an email from GV stating that my port was complete. On the GV website, I then added in my new number (under Settings>Phones), and set all calls (and texts) to forward to my new number. GV walked me through a couple of programming steps - and confirmed that my GV calls would be forwarded to my new VZW number. Please note that if you want GV to pick up your VM's, then you will need to activate Google voicemail on the GV website (Settings>Phones). Else, VZW voicemail will end up picking up your calls - and a message like "this user has a VM box that has not been set up" will play.
I also opened up the GV app on my phone and changed the settings to "Make all calls through Google Voice". Also, I turned off the 'Messaging' app, and set the GV app as the default app for handling all texts.
As of now, I can make and receive calls via the setup described above. Folks receiving calls from me see my GV number on their displays (so no need to update folks with my new number), and when I receive calls on my GV number, my VZW phone displays the number of the person trying to reach me (so no updating my contacts list). Low priced international calls, desktop-based texting, unlimited storage of texts/VM's/call-logs, here I come!
My texts arent working yet, but GV states that it takes about 3 days before texting becomes active. When it does, I'm hoping that all texts will be routed via the GV app (I'm fairly certain that it will)
    Other things to note:
Banking Apps: Some banking apps that require verification codes to be sent via text might stop working. I just got an email from BOFA this morning asking me to reverify my mobile number. Need to fix this once GV texting becomes active
Messaging: Existing texts on your device cannot be backed up/imported into GV. That said, Google Play has a couple of free apps that backup your entire message archive under a separate label within your Gmail account
Hope this helps someone else out there in taking the plunge. Seems like the process is fairly straightforward unless you decide to skip some steps or if you are impatient and try to change things too quickly (I would really urge you against skipping steps, hurrying things up, etc. GV is completely automated, and getting "support" is almost impossible).
    All the best!"

You won't lose your unlimited data as long as your account stays active and you don't purchase a subsidized phone. I just did this yesterday and it took just a few minutes over 24 hours to port my number over to GV. I still have unlimited data. I pretty much followed the instructions you have above except I waited about 7 hours to get a new number from VZW just to make sure there were no hiccups. VZW says you may get some overages if you change your number immediately as opposed to on the first day of your billing cycle because they prorate your minutes and texts used. Luckily I have unlimited everything so it didn't make a difference for me. I'm planning on going over to T-Mobile. My home is a dead zone for cell phones and I always have a weak signal and sometimes don't get my calls. I figure if I'm going to pay for an unsubsidized phone, I might as well go with a company that has wifi calling and a cheaper unlimited plan. I pay $94/mo before taxes with VZW; I'll only be paying $59.50 with T-Mobile for the same plan with 2.5 GB tethering included. T-Mobile here in LA is pretty good and even if I don't get LTE, I can fall back on their HSPA+ network, which is way better than VZW's crippled 3G network. No regrets porting over. The ONLY way I'll stay with VZW is if they allow me to keep my unlimited data (not going to do Verizon Max) and get a subsidized phone. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW VERIZON?

  • How to turn off 3g on Iphone 5 while keeping cellualar data on??

I have problem with this function on Iphone 5.  I still want my iphone to receive email, imessage while keeping 3g mode off, as I don't subscribe for the unlimited package.
However I found my iphone 5 still having 3g sign on permanently even I turn off the 3g mode. It doesn't work like my iphone 4 did. This really disappointed me indeed

Thank  you for your help. However I'm actually looking for a solution where I also have no access to Wi-fi as well.

  • Hiding a column while keeping the data in the TableModel

    Hello
I am reading data in from a database and I add the data from the resultSet to
    a vector of vectors.
    e.g my table
    user_id | user_fname | user_lname | prj_id | prj_name
I am reading in the above information but I dont want to
    display the id fields i.e
    the user_id and
    the prj_id fields
to the user but I need to keep them in the vector inside my tablemodel
    for futher database manipulation.
I've looked at threads saying to set the width of the column to 0 is this the best way???
Could someone please share with me a way to do the above.
    Thank you very much

Figure out how to call the removeColumn method on your JTable. Calling the method only removes the column viewed (JTable), not the actual column in the (DefaultTable) Model.
If you go for the proposed "do it so small it cant be seen" solution, you have to "lock" the colum width so users can't do it bigger manually with the mouse...
