Upgrading Xserve G5 using USB Optical Drive/ Target Disk Mode

Hello Everyone!
I am trying to update my Xserve G5 that is currently running 10.3 (Panther) to 10.5 (Leopard). I have tried multiple methods and cannot seem to get it to work.
I have tried to:
Use a USB Optical Drive - I tried using a USB optical drive because the Xserve G5 has a CD drive not a superdrive. It recognizes the Leopard Installation DVD as it pops up on the desktop. I open the installation and click the restart button, but it restarts again and goes to my desktop as if I just turned on the Mac. I have tried doing this in Safe Mode (Holding down Shift on Start Up) and trying to select it from volumes (Holding down Option on Start Up). These two do not work.   I believe it is because I am using a USB optical drive and that it wont recognize the drive unless you are logged on in the OS. Could this be it?
Use FireWire Target Disk Mode - I also tried to use target disk mode by hooking up my Xserve to my MacBook Pro 2009. Everything work fine. I put the Xserve into target disk mode by holding down T on start up and it goes into target disk mode. It pops up on my MacBook Pro desktop as a FireWire external device (I can access all of my files on the Xserve hard drive). My only problem is that I do not know how to run the installation disk of Leopard off of my MacBook Pro so it installs it on my Xserve.
Any Suggestions or Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
- Ryan

So what should I do since reformatting the HDD through disk utlity on the Xserve is not an option
Why not???
Boot th xSeve using alt key from Install Disc in MBP, then...
  2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
   3. Click the Erase tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, APM Partition.
Quit DU which puts you back to the Installer... Install.

  • Old G4 450 Sawtooth - Multiple Drives - Target Disk Mode ?

So I have had this old computer a long time and have upgraded it over the years as much as it can handle - faster processor, max ram, multiple drives ...
The problem I am having at the moment is only one of the drives will show up in TDM - the one that shows up is the original 20Gb drive. I have a Seagate 500Gb and another Seagate 1.5 Tb drive too. Neither of the Seagates show up in TDM. I haven't cracked it open in a while but seem to remember they are connected via a SATA controller card. Just verified the two SATA connections. The 500Gb drive is my boot drive.
So is there something obvious here that I should understand? Thank you.
Oh I'm connecting to a circa 2007 MBP and Mavericks. The G4 is running Leopard.

I think I found my answer .... unless someone has an idea or info otherwise.
Tip: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal ATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI or SCSI drives.
Doesn't mention SATA but inferring it does include SATA.

  • Using Mac Pro in Target Disk Mode Connected to MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I am trying to set up two macs to run off of the same monitors/keyboard/mouse/etc. I know about KVMs, but they are too expensive for my current setup.
I want to know if it's possible to run a 2006 Mac Pro in target disk mode connected to a brand new MacBook Pro 13" via a firewire to thunderbolt converter.
I would need to access the files, but also run the applications from the Mac Pro on the MacBook Pro.
Would such a setup work? Would I have to reboot each time I wanted to switch machines? Would there be a significant lag in the Mac Pro's performance?
Any tips or links to articles/etc. would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hi Niel,
    Thanks for the speedy response.
I should have clarified that I know that I can access the drive like a firewire drive. I'm more curious as to whether I can either:
    1. use it's applications in target disk mode (based on your answer -- No, unless all the necessary system components are identical between the two computers).
    2. Boot from the Target Disk computer as if it were a separate drive of my main computer. If so, since this is Firewire and not SATA, will I notice a severe loss of processing power?

  • Using Target disk mode from hard drive which is starting to fail, when I move files, I get a preparing to copy message but nothing happens. Any ideas?

Hello, i have a MacBook Pro. The hard drive is failing to such an extent that I can't currently use the computer, only things like utility mode etc. I have connected it unto my iMac and using a Firewire in target disk mode, I am attempting to move files across using that mode. The HD of the Macbook Pro appears in the IMac devices menu and I copy and paste the appropriate folders/files but as I do this I get a progress bar which says "preparing to copy" but then nothing appears to happen. Any ideas on what to do? Is there a password or other issue here that I am over-looking. Perhaps the hard drive of my macbook pro is so corrupted that I can't move files over. Any help would be great?

Try moving smaller groups of files. I' guessing that you don't have a backup huh?

  • Fresh Install Issues using target disk mode

    Hi people...
I have a bit of a problem installing 10.4.3 onto an xserve cluster node that is in target disk mode from a 10.4.9 Xserve head.
I tried using MacOSXServerInstall.mpkg on teh 10.4.3 dvd that came with the Xserve but I get the follwing msg...
You can not install "Mac OS X Server on this volume. You can only install the Server Administration software on a computer running Mac OS X System version 10.4."
I have tried erasing the drive and it is in good order.
Any help / sugestions would be appreciated.

    Hi Mik,
I believe the package you're trying to install is the package which will upgrade OS X 10.4.x to OS X Server 10.4.x. In other words, it will upgrade the "client" version to the "server" version. As such, you need a working client install on the machine already. This approach is sometimes necessary if you're trying to install OS X Server on a machine that comes with a newer OS version than the OS X Server media (say you have the 10.4.2 server media and buy a new machine that comes with 10.4.8 client -- you use the named package and immediately do a software update).
I think you need to install from a different disk. Double check you're using the right media.

  • HT1661 Problems mounting Imac in target disk mode on retina laptop with a solid state drive as host

I'm trying to use an Imac in target disk mode to copy files from it to a new retina display laptop with a solid state drive, but the target drive will not mount even tho it does start in target disk mode. I have all the proper firewire connection. The Imac will not respond for more than a few minutes before crashing when started from its own system. I would like to salvage a few files from it before I perform a clean install of the system.
Anyone has any idea why it wont mount in Target mode onto the retina laptop? Help!
    Thanks in advance. :-)

Mac OS X doesn't offer a "clean install" option.
I'm assuming your target Mac is running 10.6?
And you setup the target Mac without adding a Firewire cable until after the Firewire logo appears on the screen?

  • Migration Assistant vs. Target Disk Mode

I'm trying to migrate an account via Target Disk Mode from a PPC G4 tower with multiple drives. Only one of the drives is showing up (number 2 out of 4) and it's not the system drive. Any idea how I can get the other drives to appear? They do not show up in Disk Utility, either.
    Thanks!

Any idea how I can get the other drives to appear?
Change the position of the drives in the computer or use another method. Target Disk mode only connects to the master drive on the ATA 0 bus, and on newer Macs, the internal optical drive.

  • MBP and target disk mode with PPC desktop

I am thinking about finally jumping to a MBP from a PowerBook.
One of the things I do a lot is hook up my PowerBook in target disk mode to interchange information with my PowerPC desktop.
Any problems with using a MBP in target disk mode with a PPC desktop? If so... what???
Thanks for any feedback, help, cautions.

We just took the plunge and our MBP is being shipped.
Did you let the Migration Assistant move your applications? I am thinking about whether it is a good idea to migrate Final Cut Studio and any other non-Universal apps, for example, from the PowerBook, then get the Universal upgrades? Or just get the Universal versions and install them?
    thanks

  • Start in Target disk mode and is dead

I put my macbook pro in target disk mode for boot another power book from firewire, he asked me for restart, and now dosent start. Is dead. Nothing respond. What to do? HELP

Strange. It's one of the graphite colored boxes. I bought it as a G4. Maybe they used G3 motherboards for the early G4s. I tried using my iBook in target disk mode and mounting it on the old G4 desktop, then selecting the installation DVD as the startup disk. The machine booted into OS 9, but the iBook's drives mounted. I guess this model has no support for target disk mode and it can't even boot from a target disk.

Since I upgrade to Lion OS my optical drive stop working can't read or write at all I did what I could to fix it but still not working , any help please

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Using the optical drive of a MacBook Pro from new iMac for iTunes

Can I connect my macbook pro to my new iMac (no optical drive) with ethernet cable and use the optical drive of the macbook pro to upload CDs to iTunes on the new iMac?

On my 17" MacBook Pro I use the eSata port for Black X Duet Hard Drive Docking station where I put 2 1TB Hitachi internal drives. They are swappable and are about $80.00US. I use the USB port for my system backup and a G-force 500 MB bus powered portable drive on the FW800 port just for the heck of it. It works out really well for me.

Can you install tiger on a power mac g4 with out a DVD drive if so how, I do have have a 2011 iMac can I use that in target disk mode with a FireWire cable any help would be appreciated

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • How do install Windows 7 from a USB optical drive?

I have a 27" 2013 iMac with no optical drive so I borrowed an Apple USB portable optical drive. How do I install Windows on BootCamp from the USB Optical drive?

iirc, you won't be able to or at least you shouldn't, it will take much longer than using a usb install
    CHECKLIST
    use only a +8gb USB2 flash drive
disconnect ALL devices except kb, mouse
    STEPS
    do a PRAM reset
open disk utility, confirm you have 1 partition (‘mac HD’ unless you renamed it) and repair permissions TWICE
    dl a windows ISO
insert your usb flash drive and open boot camp assistant, choose all options making sure you used the new ISO just dl'd
if you get an error that the windows support software is unavailable, manually dl it here, put it on a separate USB2 drive and install by clicking setup.exe after windows is installed

  • Can I use Target Disk Mode over USB?

When I enable Target Disk Mode on my MacBook Pro, can I connect that via USB to a PC (which doesn't have FireWire) and use the Mac as an external hard drive?
If not, are there any third-party products which would let me do this?

No. I doubt you can use FW mode on a PC anyway.
The cost of USB or FW external drives is so low buy one for the PC. IF it is formatted FAT32 then the mac and PC can both read and write to it.

  • How to launch Apple Hardware Test from a USB optical drive?

    Hi all!
First off, and before you guys starting proposing solutions I can't implement, I don't, repeat DON'T have a Firewire optical drive, nor am I going to buy one: I recently had to buy a USB LG optical drive to compensate for my SuperDrive going AWOL on me. I used said drive to reinstall OSX about a month ago, so this LG drive works just fine, thank you.
The thing is, I'd like to conduct an Apple Hardware Test, and I know you have to boot from OSX CD n°1 (in my case) to do that. Alas, since I can't boot from the CD in my SuperDrive by keeping the D key down, all I have is this LG thingy, and I wonder how I can conduct my hardware test with a USB optical drive.
I'll sum it up for you:
    1) My SuperDrive isn't working, stopped working about the same time I installed this EFIng (guffaw, guffaw) Security Update 2009-001;
    2) I don't have a Firewire optical drive;
    3) All I have is a USB optical drive and MacOS X CDs.
    4) Booting with the OSX CD in my USB optical drive and keeping D, C or alt keys didn't help.
I read in another forum that you could somehow copy the content of the OSX CD on a flash drive, then boot from the flash drive and conduct an AHT, but I'm not sure how it can be done.

    Hi!
Looks like we posted at exactly the same time, Glynn! LOL
Anyway, I did just what you said, drag'n'drop and all. The problem is, when I boot from the USB hard drive, it's exactly as if I were booting from the CD: first I'm asked to choose a language, then the install screen appears, and I can either reinstall on my startup disk from the USB hard drive (that's kinda cool, but I don't think I leave in on my USB hard drive, which can only content 40Gb, because I've almost 25Gb worth of data to retransfer soon...
So, in a nutshell, I couldn't find Apple Hardware Test anywhere. I even explored the CD content, but there are so many files...
What's my best option now? Could AppleJack help me here? Can I install AHT on my startup disk and boot on it using a special set of keys?
Almost time to go to work. A 5 minute walk, though...
