Upload from Palm Desktop 4.1 to Palm Centro

My old Palm Pilot M515 broke some two years ago. I am maintaining the Contacts ("Address" on Palm Desktop under Widows XP Pro) on Palm Desktop version 4.1 and extensively using the "Note" tab to enter free form information.
a. Can I upload the Addresses from Palm Desktop 4.1 to Palm Centro which I am considering to purchase?
b. Will the free form information from "Note" upload fully to Palm Centro and where to?
Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
Your existing data including the notes from your existing contacts database should migrate without difficulty to the new Palm Desktop which ships with the Centro.  When you install the new version, it recognizes the existing installation and will automatically migrate the data.
On the device itself, if there is a Note attached to a particular contact, the contents of the Note actually display as part of the contact, at the end of the listing.  You can add or delete a note for a contact directly on the device as well.

  • Expense on Palm Desktop but not on Palm Centro

I just switched from a Tungsten E2 to a Centro 685. The Tungsten has Palm OS v5.40; the Centro has v5.49. Palm Desktop (running under Windows XP Home, SP3) has been using v6.2 for a while. The Desktop has Expense as well as Date, Address, Memo, etc., and I had no trouble entering things in Expense on the Tungsten and sync'ing them to the Desktop. The transfer went fine except that the Centro doesn't have Expense. The HotSync log claims that Expense sync'ed properly, but since I can't find the application on the Centro, I can't see the Expense records.
What am I missing? Was Expense not included in v5.49, or on Centros? I've seen notes saying that recent versions of Desktop don't include Expense; was it pulled into v6.2 on the Desktop when I upgraded from an older version, but isn't really supposed to be there after v5.40? Is there a way to get the app onto the Centro? I can keep expense records in Memos if I need to, or can install a third-party expense manager, but I'm curious why I can use Palm's Expense application on the desktop but not on the Centro.
    Thanks. Suggestions gratefully appreciated --
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Your guess is correct - Palm eliminated the Expense app several versions ago of Palm Desktop and PalmOS.
It may appear on your computer due to it's former installation from an older version of Palm Desktop.

It looks like you may have a bad installation of palm desktop and will need to re-install the program. Is all your data on the device as well as in palm desktop? Here is a procedure to backup the data from palm desktop.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each
category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name
it something like Palm Desktop Data. Copy and Paste the link
below in a browser and follow the instructions on that page for
    the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of
that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard
drive. Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data
that was changed to that folder and save again to the external
    media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm
Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop
or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
    To uninstall palm desktop in XP, you will need to follow this procedure;
    1. Backup users folder located at one of these locations:
    C:\Palm\(palm desktop username folder)
    C:\program files\palmone\(palm desktop username folder)
    C:\program files\palm\(palm desktop username folder)
    2. Uninstall(remove) Palm desktop in control panel-add\remove programs.
    3. On the start menu, in the run box, type regedit.
    4. Before making any changes you need to backup the registry. Click on file-export and then save in a location you can remember, like My Documents.
    5. Now go to the following Keys and delete the Palm folders. Be very careful at this point.
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\(delete)Palm desktop autorun
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\(delete)Palm
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\(delete)Palmone
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\U.S.Robotics(delete Palm entries only)
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\(delete)Palmsource
    6. Close registry.
    7. Go to C:\ and  C:\Program files, see if the Palm folders are gone.
    8. Restart the PC
    9. Reinstall Palm Desktop.

  • File Upload from a desktop java application

    Hi,
what I want to achieve is, to upload a pipe-delimited text file from my desktop java application to my hosting server, and then on the server, I have a PHP page that would parse this file and insert records to the database.
so, on the server, I can enable write access on the folder which I want to upload the file to,
but how do I upload a file from my desktop application.
    Thanks

HttpURLConnection conn = (HttpURLConnection) _url.openConnection();this code open a http connection, and what is left is to fill in http protocol things (e.g. content type, content length, POST/PUT or whatever method...etc). after you set the correct request header then open a output stream and pass your files and flush the connection then close it.... in theory (never tried sending files, only done handling POST http form requests with it but it shouldn't be too much different when it is http protocol)
you may want to install Fiddler2 into your browser, it can filter out the browser outgoing and incomign information and you can take a little read in their header and see how they interact with each other

  • Restore Palm Desktop Addresses from last Hot Sync and using those backup files

I have numerous issues.  First I have Windows Vista 64 byte which does not allow a USB Hot Sync so I attempted the Wireless Hot Sync and killed my Palm Centro.  The information was restores going to the store and they did something.  So that is my first issues - I am unable to Hot Sync.  However the Hot Sync took place and I have found the 'Back-up' files on my Computer from that Hot Sync Operation.
My new issue is that somehow I lost many addresses on my Palm Desktop Address File and that is a mystery to me.
What I am trying to accomplish now is to restore those missing addresses on my Palm Desktop (Computer Files) using if possible those backed up files from the last Hot Sync as i do not believe I should try the Wireless Hot Sync again since that has failed me twice and my phone dies and it needs to be restored at the Sprint store.  I'm not even sure I remember now how exactly that was done....
So, is there a way to restore addresses to my computer Palm Desktop from those back-up files from the Hot Sync?  OR does anyone have a solution to actually performing this Wireless Hot Sync without killing  my Palm Centro again?
Thank you for any ideas or suggestions to either or both issues.
Restore Lost Addresses from Palm Desktop without a Hot Sync using back-up Hot Sync files on the same computer or

You can recover the data from your user folder provided you have only sync'ed once with the PC when you discovered the data missing. When you sync to the PC there are files created for each PIM category in your user folder. For Example; datebook.dat or datebook (Depending on the version of Palm Desktop) and datebook.bak. Using 6.2 the file names are .mdb and mdb.bak. For 6.2, the files are located in the username folder in PalmOSdesktop in my documents.
The files are named .dat and .bak. When you sync, the current data is stored in .dat. The next time you sync the data in the .dat file is copied to the .bak file. You can rename the .dat to .old. then rename the .bak to .dat. If the data in the .bak file is intact, it will now be in palm desktop when you reopen Palm desktop. I have included a link to show you how to find the userfolder on the PC.

The best way to backup your data is to use the export feature in Palm Desktop. Make a new folder on the PC desktop named Palm Desktop Backup data. Next, select the category you want to export. You will get a window that asks where you want to save the file, save in the folder created on the desktop. There is a button that allows you to select currently selected record or all, select all. If you don't select all, then only the record highlighted is exported. You will then need to name the file for export, I suggest the name of the category, eg: datebook (With current date). Do this for all critical data in each category. With the data exported to the folder on the PC desktop, you can save this data to a flash drive, external hard drive or a CD-RW. With this method you will have your data in a seperate place than Palm desktop and the device. If you "Lose" data again, you can import the data back into palm desktop.
Make sure that when you make changes in palm desktop or the device to export the data to the folder created for the backup.

I have a Z22 and am running Access version 6.2.2 on a PC with Vista.
When I move from Day, Week or Year to Monthly view in the Calendar, I get the "Palm Desktop by Access Application has stopped working" (and then the Windows message saying they are checking for a solution, which they never seem to find).
Does any one know 1) how to fix this and 2) what is the cause ?  Am I running old software which I need to update ?
    Thanks.

Thank you, aeisha_anis for the steps to correct this problem.  I verified that I must have corrupted calendar data as the PALM Desktop does come up and work when I follow your first 4 steps and remove the data from it.  I can't, however, get through the importing step at the end of your instructions.  I've tried a few times and am afraid I may have messed up the data file as it now is only showing a datebook. mdb and a datebook.bak file under the DateBook folder I copied to my desktop, but no datebook.dab folder as it was showing before and I never did find the datebook.dat file you mentioned.  I still have all of my current calendar data on my Palm Centro but I can't get it to sync with the Palm Desktop without getting the "Palm Desktop by ACCESS Application has stopped working" message.  Do you have any ideas on how to fix this problem?  Thanks much!

  • Palm desktop 4.2 calendar items gone.

Hi.  I'm really hoping someone can help me.  I have the Palm Destop 4.2 software and Windows XP Home on my machine.  I haven't synched in literally years - I don't use the device any more, but I still use the software for my calendaring and datebook.  All my non-recurring appointments on the calendar have vanished.  This has happened 2-3 times before, but the most recent is this morning.  I did a backup of my HDD last night, but it seems that the calendar had already gone crazy before then, as the date/time stamp on the backed up file is the same as the one on the file that has lost everything.  The address book is just fine.
Is it possible that I've hidden the non-recurring appointments somehow?  It does show categories: all  The file size for the datebook is pretty big - 3963K, and there are only 3-4 recurring appointments a week, so it seems to me that the stuff should be in there, but I can't find it.  I have gone to Toos-Options-Tools and tried reapiring corrupted database, but it came back saying there was no corruption.
I appreciate any help you can give me.

Did you look at the files in the username folder and are those the files you are talking about? There should be a .dat file in the datebook folder in the username folder. Look at the properties of the file and check the date on that file.
If you don't sync the handheld, then you run the risk of losing data unless you export the data from Palm desktop. We have seen that if you leave Palm desktop open and the PC does a Windows update it can cause data loss. I would suggest expoeting the data and saving on a flash drive, external hard drive or CD-RW. Since you don't sync you only have 1 data file and if that file gets corrupted, then you are out of luck in recovering the data. This may be your situation at this point.
Here is an explanation of the sync process and the file rotation when you sync.
You can recover the data from your user folder provided you have only sync'ed once with the PC when you discovered the data missing. • Palm Desktop 6.2 update won't open after installing on PC running Windows XP

I just installed the new version of Palm Desktop 6.2 on my Dell laptop running Windows XP Media Center to upgrade it from the older version and it won't open up. Whenever I try to open the application the message "Palm Desktop by ACCESS Application has encountered a problem and needs to close..." I've tried reinstalling the application but that doesn't help. I've also tried using the "Repair" of the installation to "Repair installation errors in the program." and it hasn't helped either. All my data on my Palm Centro is still there but I can't get Palm Desktop to open up. I want to get Palm Desktop to open up.

Palm Desktop 6.2.2 is not an upgrade to 4.x!   It was designed to fix the things Microsoft broke when Vista was born.
It lacks many features that existed for many years in the 4.x versions.
I'd suggest doing a Clean Uninstall and reinstall your original version!

  • Palm Desktop Software

    I have had this Palm for awhile.  I used it on my work computer but changing to home computer.  I downloaded software from website.  I can sync the Palm to the Palm Desktop Software without a problem or errors.  When I open the desktop software, it won't let me open or click anywhere on the screen.  A box pops up with the following information;
Palm Desktop Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
It gives me 3 buttons to click:  Debug, Send Error Report, Don't send.  If I click on Don't send or Debug, the window will close.  I have removed the program and downloaded again, but I have the same experience.
    Any help would be welcomed.

First thing is first that text size is really small and I have horrible eyes.
Ok next is the troubleshooting, what we are going to need to do is figuring what is causing the palm desktop to crash, I bet it is your data, so lets see if I am right.
You first need to locate your userfolder, it is located in program files/palm/username/
Once you have your user folder in that folder you will see a bunch of folders, I'm first concerned with datebook. Go in datebook and look for the datebook.dat file, cut that file out of that folder and place in the root of your userfolder.
Going back into palm desktop (if it opens without error) you will see your calendar is gone.
Next you need to tell palm desktop to open in something other than address or calendar I usually suggest memos. To do this you can go to tools/options and change the view palm desktop opens in (default is address).
Once you have it changed to memos you need to put your calendar back into palm desktop. So close palm desktop and go back to your userfolder. Grab the datebook.dat file off of the root of your username and place it back in the datebook folder (it will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing files, tell it yes)
Ok so your calendar is back in your username time to go back to palm desktop, relaunch palm desktop and this time go to tools/options/tools and and check for corrupted records, it will scan your database and fix any corrupted records it finds, tab over to calendar and see if it crashes if it doesn't you are good to go.
Also on a side note if it still crashes with your datebook out of your username, move your addressbook out also, usually the culrpit is calendar but i have seen contacts cause the problem also and on rare occurances both.
Post back if you need more information or any clarification.

  • New Windows profile broke Palm Desktop & Lifedrive Mgr.

I use my Windows PC at work as my primary PC for synchronizing my Lifedrive.  Recently my windows profile got corrupted somehow, so the IT support guy at work had to create a new Windows profile for me and to try and copy over as much data as he could from my old profile files.  Many of my applications now treat me as a first-time user, so I have to reestablish preferences, etc., but the Palm Desktop (PD) and Lifedrive Manager (LM) won't work at all.
When I first tried to launch the PD, it prompted me to select a user, but it the pick-list was empty.  The same was true if I tried to select a profile.  I tried creating a new profile and a new user in that profile (using a different username than I had previously), but when I went on to try and start the PD, I got an error box with the message: "Error: Invalid configuration.  Terminating the Palm Desktop."
Similarly, when I connected my LD by USB and launched the LM application, it told me "Failed to start PalmOneRemoteLibrary initialization" and exited.
I suppose I could just re-install both applications, but I'm worried that I might blow away my old files under "Program Files\Palm\."
    Any suggestions?
    thanks, Bruce
    Post relates to: LifeDrive

You are probably going to have to uninstall and reinstall everything on the new profile, to preserve your data just copy your user folder which is located in the palm folder onto your desktop.
After you uninstall everything and reinstall, launch palm desktop and create the exact same username, after that copy the folder from your desktop back into your Palm folder and all of your data should come back.

  • Alternative to Palm Desktop?

    Hello,
I bought a used Tungsten E on eBay. I find the Palm Desktop application OK overall, but there are a couple of things I don't like about it:
    - Apparently, it's not possible to create non-timed items in the Calendar and have them be moved automatically to the next day until they're marked as Done
    - It's not even possible to drag and drop non-timed items to move them manually to another day. The only way to do this, is to go to the current day, edit the item, and change the day. As this must be performed for each item, it's quite cumbersome :-/
Are there alternative PIM applications you would recommend, whether it's MS Outlook or something else?
FWIW, I used to use the venerable EccoPro, but stopped using it for Calendar as I couldn't get infos in the Palm to sync correctly with the PC with HoSync.
    Thank you.
    Post relates to: Tungsten E

tungsten E can work with microsoft outlook. if you don't have the original CD for the device, you can purchase an application called pocketmirror from chapura. it's a good alternative as a replacement for palm outlook conduits that usually comes alongside the palm desktop software CD for palm devices.

  • Palm Desktop Software Crashed

I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7 and installed the 6.6.2 Palm desktop software so the palm could sync using bluetooth. It worked fine for a month and then it crashed in the middle of a hotsync and the program will not open. I did a clean uninstall, including the registry and reinstalled Desktop and it will not open. During the install, it asked me to do a hotsync and it appeared to work. I tried running as administrator and running in compatibility mode, still no good. Someone on this forum suggested that it was a windows update and that we should reset computer back to initial settings and turning off windows update. I am not going to do that. My wife is attached to her Palm and I need to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you set the HotSync conduit to use "USB" in Palm Desktop?
When you plug in the Palm E2, does your computer recognize it and make a noise?
Make sure you are not plugging it into a "hub", but directly into the PC.
Aceeca only offers a patch - I'm not sure why you uninstalled Palm Desktop!
Be sure when you open the Device Manager on your computer that the Palm E2 is still active, and not "gone to sleep".
When all else fails, a Clean Uninstall and Reinstall can usually fix most issues (as long as your USB ports are working correctly on the PC).

    Here is a link for other options for backing up your data;

If you can find your missing files, you will need to install the version of PD you previously had installed and paste the files in that version. Any palm files previous to 6.2 will not work in 6.2. The files in 6.2 are in a different file format.
One caveat here, since you do not sync a device, the files are not rotated as they would be during the sync process. The only option you may have avail. is the data in the .dat files.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
