Upload speed @1500m 1Mbps only

Sorry for a rather novice question - I'm about 1500m from my cabinet and get about 18Mbps download speed, but only 1Mbps upload on the BT wholesale test (it says my upload profile is 2Mbps, I'm on option 1) - is this normal?
Looking through a few other posts people seem to be getting more than this as an upload speed with a similar download speed?
Tried the online support chat - just ended up with a rather laboured explaination about what uploading is!
Thanks for any comments.

Figures like that are a guide only, there are many factors that can affect the speed you will get. For example if you have aluminium on the line somewhere that will greatly decrease your speed especially over a long distance line like yours. The quality of the line etc etc will also have an impact on the connection. This can work in both ways. For example at 1500m away from cabinet some people actually get 20 down and around 6 up but then others get around 8 down and 1 up. It's just down to luck really and there isn't much you can do about it for the time being.
BT are currently trialing a new technology called Vectoring. Hopefully if everything in the trial goes well then BT will decide to deploy this to cabinets at some point, but this will probably take time, much like the FTTC roll out is taking time. If vectoring is actually given the green light to be used, from what I understand it will be used to give those further from the cabinet a better speed rather than those closer to the cabinet a faster speed.

  • Download and upload speed issues

Hi I am new to the forum and I am having problems with my broadband speed I get approx 6.8mb download speed but what appears to be happening is when I surf the net the speed is 6.8mb but the problem is when I download the speed drops to max 2mb can be as low as 0.6mb does anyone know why this would be happening, I have read on the forum that you should keep your home hub on 24/7 must admit haven't been doing this usually turn it off when no one is in the house. The other issue is my upload speed is poor only get approx 0.3mb when I was with O2 before I changed to bt in the summer I was getting 1mb upload any ideas how to improve this

hi thanks for getting back in touch we have the old type of phone socket does not have a test socket
speed test result: download speed 7.10mb upload 0.33mb ping latency 39.00 ms
these are the speeds when i surf the issue is when i download the speed plummets to 2mb. and why is upload only 0.33mb when o2 on same line was 1mb

  • Upload speed stuck on 448 Kbps?

Hi, I am new to BT and the forums so please be gentle and excuse my English.
Here goes my “problem”. I have just finished my 10 day training period and although I’m happy with my download speed (around 7,000 Kbps) I am a bit disappointed with the upload speed. I only get about 300 Kbps what makes me think that I am capped to 448 Kbps which is not too good for me because I use Skype a lot. My previous ISP was Orange and I was getting around 900 Kbps and given the fact that Orange uses the same equipment I assumed that I would get similar speeds. My parents in law who live two hundred meters away get around 700 Kbps with the same BT option.
    1. Is there anything I have done wrong in the training period (I disconnected the hub accidentally in the first hour of the training period, and again about four days later)
    2. Is there anything that can be done to improve the upload speed?
    Thanks in advance.

  • High speed expanded internet t only getting 0.38 upload speed

I need at least 0.60 upload speed for my new job so i switched isp to Verizon for the expanded highspeed which was supposed to cover that speed (3.84 - 7.84 kpbs they advertise) i need for Hd live stream. when i first set it up it was high enough  but now  it is consistently down to 0.39. I have spoken to 3 robotic online techs who try and tell me this is the fastest i can get in my area and that is a good spped and it is not- on speedtest.net my upload speed of 1.29 mbps and 0.39 mpbs rate a grade of F!
Fios is not available in my part of l.a  yet but they have it the next neighboorhood oover in snata monica.
No one will help me fix the problem. When i spoke to billing they said it looked like there was some kind of problem blocking my line but these techs i spoke with can't find it and just go through the script they are taught i suppose.
can anyone help? my laptop is only a year old and i connect directly to ethernet cable. i defragged and clean computer but no change.
Help or i am going to have ti try and switch to ATT U verse. My modem is an Actiontech.
    HELP

Chances are slim if you're in a Verizon area that AT&T U-Verse would be available. AT&T and Verizon typically don't overbuild on each other except in very few, specific circumstances. Besides, I personally wouldn't order U-Verse due to their 300GB/m data cap. DSL Resellers are always an option, but whether or not they can deliver the desired speed is up to the line, up to their equipment or more often than not, up to Verizon.
For this issue, you may have been "optimized" if you saw the speed you desire earlier. Would you be willing to supply your modem Transceiver Statistics? If you're not sure how to get this, please let me know what your modem make and model is.

Then Restore your iPhone Firmware with iTunes on computer. See if better. If not, talk to Verizon and see if they know of the problem and if there is a fix. If not, then make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution under Warranty.

  • How to improve upload speeds with new Airport Extreme?

    Hi!
Just plugged in a new Airport Extreme to replace a BT HomeHub 3.0.  The wi-fi download speeds have generally increased over a wider range in the house but the wi-fi upload speeds have dropped to under 1Mbps.
Speeds to laptop linked via ethernet appear fine (both up & download).
Initially thought that I may have messed-up the set-up but the fact that the wired connection works fine makes me think this is something to do with the Airport settings - a scary thought as I don't really know much about this stuff.
As range was really the reason for getting the AP Extreme I'm contemplating plugging the HomeHub back in and just trying to use the AP to extend the old HHub system rather than setting up a new AP system...
Any suggestions would be most gratefully received!
    Thanks

... just a quick note to say that the appears to be resolved after a long telephone call to apple service dept (very patient - very helpful).
In my naivety I had attempted to revert back to using the homehub (3.0) router and connecting the APExtreme into one of the Ethernet LAN ports but this didn't work!  So called the apple helpline & we went back to basics until it worked.  One point to note that may help anyone finding themselves in a similar position...
I had followed the instruction to reset the APEBS depressing the button first whilst powered then without power and during the unit being reconnected to power supply thinking tha this would do a full restore to factory defaults (effectively undoing all the messing- around I may have done flounderinng through the settings) but it was only when I was directed to do a full reset through the Airport Utility settings [Edit\Advanced\Restore Defaults] that this worked (for me).
Download and upload speeds are now up to 93% of advertised speeds wired, & wireless with some fluctuations which appear to be network delivery related rather than anything to do with the APEBS.  It's working well with an APExpress which had been struggling (intermittentlyout of range) which is connected to stereo and Apple TV.
By the way - thanks to other posts regarding importance of not connecting an audio out cable to phono sockets on the stereo (horrible sound quality) using a redundant CD channel it works great.
All-in-all, very happy with it so far.

  • Silly Questions - Upload Speed & Hardware

    Hi tere network people,
Networking ignorant here in need of your help.
I'm using a PowerMac G4 as a server and I have a PHP website going to share some pics with friends.
Some lamented it can be slow to download the pictures on their side (Most, if not all, have Broadband). The picture files are not huge, but my connection is only a residential Broadband one.
The ISP states that: "The upload speed is 256 Kilobits/Sec. Average upload rates are circa 20 Kilobytes/Sec."
    Coming to my silly questions:
    1) How much my Upload speed should be to confortably support 5-10 users at a time?
    2) Since I got a new PM G4 with a 7200 rpm HD and a Gigabit Ethernet port and a slightly faster processor, should I look at the modem/router specs? Can they affect/limit upload speed?
If anyone can give me some basic tips, I'd be grateful.
    Cheers!

    1) How much my Upload speed should be to confortably support 5-10 users at a time?
    That's easy to calculate.
Assume that your 10 users are on broadband connections with a 1mbps download speed. In order to fulfill everyone's demands at top speed you need a 1mpbs x 10, or 10mpbs upload speed.
Of course, it's unlikely that everyone will download files at the same time, and it's also unlikely that they'll sustain 100% of their rated download speed, so you can probably halve that figure without any noticeable degradation, but even 5mpbs is way higher than your current 256kbps upload link.
It's also clear that your internet connection is your bottleneck. Upgrading the server isn't going to make any difference.

  • Why does Telstra slow uploads speed down

I have had ongoing issues with my internet connection over the last 18 mouths.Having a upload speed of 450/650 Kbps  very slow no good for gaming an down load of 8/11Mbps down load if more than I needTo the point I have spent good dollars try to insuring   that the infrastructures and the Asset Integrity with in house are in best condition this includes the replacement and work listed belowReplacement of the Wi-Fi system to a Cat.6 cabling at a cost of $2,300Replacement of the modem with a high speed 1G port modem at cost of $ 475Replacement of the fly-lead for the Telstra house connection to the new wall socket a cost of $360Total cost of $3135 this spend was braced on Telstra recommendation as the problem was with my part of the connection after a large number of call to my internet provider I at last had a appointment with a Telstra Tec to carry line testing and fault finding .At this point if no fault was found  I was the be billed at $60 per 15min or part off and travel cost as I live in Bullsbrook WA this may I high . Lucky for me a fault was found in the exchange and reconfigured and the speed and the Exchange improved   to 22Mbps down and 15 Mbps up an outstanding numbers >test at the house 15Mbps and so 5 / 7 Mbps loss for the Exchange to house don’t to good but still very happy with it BUT the upload was 650 kbps /750Kbps and please remember this testing was carry out by Telstra with good equipment so at this point I ask why the upload was so slow? After spending over $2000 and lot of time on the phone only to be told that Telstra slow the upload speed down so the max you can get is 1 Mbps and the only way you can increase this is by paying for a business line but you still may not get any more than 1MbpsThis is only a very small part of the story SO I LIKE TO ASK WHY IS TELSTRA SLOWING ME DOWNIf you like to know more please let me know

    Hi bigdave618,
The simple answer is, that's the way the system and hardware is designed, all ISP's are the same. Uploads are limited to around 1Mbps. If you wish to get higher upload speeds you can see if Cable Broadband or NBN are available in your area as these systems allow for higher upload speeds.
Upload speeds are generally slower than download speeds because of the fact that most internet connected equipment is asymmetric. Asymmetric means that any one packet of data can either go in, or out, but not both ways at the same time. Since most internet users are receiving more data than sending, the internet connected equipment has shifted the higher majority of the signals to go toward downloading.
If you wish to find out more about ADSL I have added a link to a Wikipedia article below along with the link to the NBN and Telstra websites so you can check to see if Cable Broadband or NBN is available in your area.

  • What upload speed do I need to upload the XL photo books with over 25 pages?

I have just recently gotten a new Internet provider and the max upload speed I can get is 1mbps but I am only getting .4 mbps at the most.  When trying to upload an XL photo book with over 26 pages it keeps failing to transfer/upload and the error message says to check the internet connection.  I'm wondering what upload speed I need to upload?  I need to cancel this internet provider before my free month runs out if 1mbps is not going to be fast enough.

Well I have my first order coming in tomorrow (according to Fedex) and I have my fingers crossed.
So far I haven't been able to find any local printers that will print and bind the books at a reasonable cost - best I've found so far is $200 (or more) per book.
Hardly cost effective for my relatively meager budget.
I've explored Asuka a littoe more, and their quality does appear to be superior at first glance, but it seems I am not able to take advantage of submitting my aperture-generated book directly. According to their templates I have to put everything together manually in Photohop. Great for end-control, but one thing that made me pursue this was the ability to generate a book inside Aperture using versions direct from collection (any changes I made to an original image were automatically incorporated in my book. Had I done it all manually, teh time/effort I'd be putting into the book with be well over 5x greater!
I've also looked at shutterfly.com so far - and they seem promising, and am wiating for my colleagues order to go through before I get too excited.
Either way, I hope to have my first printing this week - I'll keep ya posted!

  • Basic Questions on ActionTec MI424-WR Router - problems with poor download/upload speed

First, I will get to the point and ask my questions, then will explain what's happening - I'm interested in hearing whether the right actions are being taken to solve my problem.
    1) After perusing the forums, I see frequent reference to the "Rev" version of the ActionTec MI424-WR Router.  How do you find the Rev version?  I have logged into the Router and in the "System Monitoring" icon, the Router Status lists my Hardware version as 'A'.  Does this mean I have Rev 'A'?
    2) What is Verizon handing out these days for Routers?  Mine is being replaced, and I am wondering what to expect.  I have Verizon FIOS Phone, TV, and Internet service, and have the 25/25 Internet service.  Will they give me another MI424-WR?  If so, what Rev level are they likely to give me?
Here's why my router is being replaced - opinions/comments/advice welcomed.
For the past year or two, I've consistently measured (via speedtest.speakeasy.net) about 30Mbs download, and around 22-25 Upload.  Lately, I noticed that my downloads were quite slow, so I tested my speed at the above website, which I had not done in many months.  I measured only about 2-3 Download and 1-2 up.  Note all of what I am discussing hear takes place with hard-wired ethernet, NOT wireless.
I tried testing from multiple computers, running XP, Vista, and Windows 7.  All getting consistently similar poor speeds.  I verified my account still is supposed to have 25/25/ service, which I verified online.
Tried rebooting the router, no change.  Then tried hard reset (pushing in the recessed button, holding it for about 20-30 seconds.  After it reconnected to the Internet, I tested speed again.  No change.
Interestingly, I tested wireless speed on the laptop I have.  Speed is MUCH better, around 15 down, and 10-12 up.
I tried the speed optimization tool on two of my PCs, it made no improvement.  Finally, got into an online chat with a Verizon Tech.  He did some tests on the line, we repeated some of the things I already tried, and then he asked how old my Router was...I am pretty sure it is the original one I received when I first signed up for FIOS, around 5-6 years ago, which is one of the reasons I asked how to tell which rev level I had.   So the tech concluded the problem was probably my Router.
I TEND to agree, especially because I recently had an "anomaly" on my network.  My son complained one day that Internet was down.  When I got home, I found out my NetGear Gigbit switch was dead, and two of my hard-wired ethernet network printers could no longer talk to the network.  I replaced the switch, so now I am thinking perhaps the Router was damaged somehow.  I have no idea what the cause of this anomaly was - everything that connects to my network was plugged into Triplite ISOBAR surge protectors, but that only protects AC power.
I would think a hardware failure would completely kill the ethernet portion of the router, not simply reduce speed, but I could be wrong.  Anyone been through something similar to this before?  I expect to receive the new Router next Thursday, so hopefully I should know by then, but still - what should the next steps be if the new router does not fix the problem?
Thanks for any comments, insight or shared experiences you might be willing to share...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    This is embarrassing.
Smith6612, you are absolutely correct, and you nailed it!
When all this mess started, I checked my Verizon account to make sure I was signed up for 25/25 Internet.  I was.
I don't know what has happened, but after reading Smith6612's response, I went back to recheck my account.  I was set up for 15/5!  So, the speedtest measurements I have been getting the last couple of days are exactly what I should be getting.  Two possibilities:
    1) My Triple-Play bundle must have expired in the past two weeks by coincidence.
    2) The Verizon tech may have changed my account profile when I worked with them online last week, although this was never discussed.
At any rate, Smith6612 wins the prize.  It certainly explains the download/upload speeds I am getting.  I have logged into Verizon and signed up for a new bundle.  According to their website, my new profile should take effect Tuesday 1/10, so after that point, I should be measuring 25/25 again.
Thanks to all who responded to this thread.  I will update this thread to confirm after Tuesday.  I get nervous whenever I have to change anything with Verizon - although everything has worked fine for the past few years, we have so many services with them - Cell Phone, TV, Internet, and Home Phone, that I worry something will go wrong with the billing, but we'll see.

    Hi lionheart1066
I see Imjolly was giving you a hand with this on another thread.
We still need to try and get you connected via the test socket to rule out external wiring and possible swap over micro-filters too.
I note you mentioned you have an I-plate.  Take this off, as it could be faulty, as you will then see the test socket.  If possible connect up via Ethernet and leave for a day or two and see if this stops the drops.
Its also important to look out for other sources of interference.  You can see a list of common offenders on this link.
If you have tried this out and are still having problems drop me in an email please with your BT account and telephone number along with a link back to this thread.
Just send using the contact us form in my profile under the 'about me' section and mark FAO Craig please.

  • Poor upload speeds via speedtest affecting iTunes match failure to upload new songs?

    Hi Guys,
My itunes match is stuck at stage 3 - I only have a couple of albums worth of songs to update but it is freezing and eventually erroring saying it can't complete the request and times out.
generally it is fine with a 15,000 song library. My itunes is up to date. I have logged out and logged in and now I can't even see any of my icloud tracks, even though it says I am logged in...
My internet browsing has also become very sluggish. I have done various checks and the only thing I have noticed is that my upload speed via a speed test is 0.01 if am lucky which is very low seeing as I should be on around 5MB (via virgin media superhub)
Would this explain my Itunes match issue?
Any help or advice on these issues would be hugely helpful.
    Cheers,
    Dave,

    Hi rhirons,
Unfortunately at present there isn't much I can suggest, you've pretty much covered off most of the troubleshooting there is for iTunes match. This is a common problem and has been ongoing since the beginning of the month affecting a lot of people. It appears to be an issue at the iTunes side and until Apple acknowledge there is a problem and fix it I'm afraid we're stuck.
I'd recommend contacting Apple Support online by going to https://getsupport.apple.com/Issues.action then selecting iTunes Store > Connecting & Downloading > iTunes Match
The more people that contact Apple to report the issue will hopefully will trigger a response to get the problem sorted.

  • Macbook pro: Extremely slow upload speed

    Hi,
I know this question has beed raised many times before me, seemingly from hundreds or thousands of users, but none of the threads I have found has lead to any solution.
My new Macbook Pro (15 inch), using Lion 10.7.3, is simply unable to obtain anything but an extremely slow upload speed, when using Wifi. I am using an Apple Airpor Extreme wifi device. My work PC, my older Macbook Pro (13 inch), all tablets and telephones etc hooks up to the same Wifi device and obtain all the speed they should, but my new Macbook Pro is sloooooooooooowwwww and sometimes cannot even initiated an uload speedtest at i.a. www.speedtest.net.
As mentioned, I am aware that there are plenty of threads on this, but I am not aware of any that provides a solution.
Is there a solution or is my new Macbook nothing but crAplle?
    Best regards,
    n

My subscription is 10 Mbps downloadand 2 Mbps download. upload
I get that (10/2 Mbps) on all other devices, other than my new Macbook Pro.
On my new Macbook pro I get 10 Mbps download, but only from 0 to 25 Kbps upload.

  • Why is the upload speed for "downloadable product" so slow?

Upload speeds are normal with other adobe services, but when it comes to uploading my product, the speed continually decreases to a crawl, making it impossible to get my product online. It starts slow: at about 20kB/s and then drops to 3kB/s!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    hi Sanjit,
Using safari, only one one file was being uploaded, no other browsers or windows open. On a whim, decided to add " https:// " before the address after logging into BC... it made an improvement in the upload speed. Am now getting about 50-54kB/s. It's useable, but still slower than it should be.
