Upload speed nowhere near promised speed!

So I've got BT infinity 2 30mb/s. True, my download speed is 30mb/s. But my upload is 0.5mb/s. This is the same as my old internet which was 1mb/s. It hasn't changed! This is important as I host servers.

Presumably you want a higher upload? Can you find out your IP profile by running http://speedtest.btwholesale.com and doing the further diagnostics?
Are you using the Homehub? You could try bypassing that by setting up a PPPOE connection from your PC direct to the modem and seeing if your upload improves.
EwanC945 it would be very helpful for all of us if you could post the information that you get from the above speed testing system.
You are seeing an issue that a number of us have seen. I moved from standard BT Broadband up to Infinity with a Home Hub 3 and had a similiar issue - I was getting half of the throughput that I was expection and they had sent in the offer / contract letter. I had a major arguement with BT Retail but in the end I solved it  It did seem to be an issue with the Home Hub 3 not getting the correct parameters from the FTTC based equipment.

    My line is usually quite stable although I've had to reboot my HH3 twice over the last week.
    Do you think there is a problem with my profile at all?
    Also my latency type used to be "Interleaved" and now it is "Fast".

  • Random speeds, nowhere near ip profile.

    As the title says we're getting completely random speeds, mainly at peak time, but not always. We could either get 8mb or a decent 65mb.
    I've called support 3 times in total, first 2 times were apparently a fault at the exchange that were "sorted" lol, the last i was told they'll send an engineer which will cost £99 if they find a fault in the house which seems unlikely when we've achieved full speed.
    The latest speedtest using bt whole sale -
    Things i've tried so far, aside from calling BT "support": http://i41.tinypic.com/5wfqdj.png
    Speedtest results are laughable, 15-20mb..
    Plugged in via modem with the homehub
    Trying different ethernet ports
    Trying a very good spare router i have instead
    Rebooting the Homehub(as advised by support)
    Rebooting Mode(as advised by support)
    Different Ethernet cables
    Different speedtest mirrors just incase the ones i use were overloaded
    When we first had Bt infinity installed we were on a stable 74mb for about 3 days, no disconections at all, no issues. Then it dropped to 66mb, fair enough not a big deal it's still ok but then it just went down hill to the point where i'd sooner be on ADSL for download stability. Upload normally sticks around the 17mb mark, but since rebooting the router/modem it's just gotten worse.
    This is basically my last attempt at getting what we pay for, i heard it's a good idea to post on the forums or possible email an admin or something.
    thanks for any help

    I was very interested to see your upload throughput on the sync rate of 20 Mbps. I have only had Infinity Option 2 since February 28th and have never got an upload throughput higher than 10 Mbps on a sync rate of 20 Mbps. I have complained to BT Retail and they have sent me a "deadlock letter" about my upstream throughput so I am currently discussing this with the Ombudsman.

    Hi
    Had infinity option 2 installed this morning engineer on time so good in that sense. However the estimated speed quote was 62mb down 17 up. However I am only actually getting 24mb down. It's a bug difference from what was quoted, I am about 200-250m from the cabinet.

  • Infinity upload speeds atrocious at 0.67mbps

    Hi,
    We have recently upgraded to Infinity broadband with promised speeds of 36 mbps Download and 9 mbps upload.
    Allowing ten days for the 'settling in' period we acheived the following using BT's own speed test:
    dnload = 34.5
    upload = 0.67
    Ping = 352.50
    This is pretty much the average achieved at different times of day and was also the speeds achieved using Speedtest.net etc all carried out with one laptop on the network via lan cable.
    As you can see the upload is atrocious and the ping speed is extremely high.
    We called BT customer services and after being told that "Upload speed wasn't important" ( Obviously not an online gamer ) we managed to get the agent to accept the upload speeds were not acceptable and they carried out some tests. They said they had found a network issue in our area and another engineer visit was arranged.
    Second Open Reach engineer visit
    The engineer arrived and after a quick chat about what the issue was he set about his work.
    The engineer was working on the job for about two hours before he came back and said he had looked at all of the kit and checked the lines and as far as he was concerned the line passed the OpenReach acceptable standards test plus he was unable to do anything with the Upload speed.
    He gave us a description of what he called "Cable Fill" being the likely reason our Upload speeds never achieve anywhere near those promised, but he did state he had managed to increase our download speed to nearer 40 mbps, the below are now a reflection of the average speeds we are currently getting, as you can see they have actually gotten worse.
    dnload = 12.11
    upload = 0.67
    Ping = 350.50
    Before we head down the road of complaining to BT I thought posting on the forum may turn up some valuable advice and further possible explanations as to why our Broadband is not achieving full promised speeds.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the contact ChristopherP, we will fill out the form asap.
    Latest as of today
    Girlfriend ( account holder ) phoned BT customer services again.
    Again we were greeted by another scripted robot. Here is what they had to say
    - We were told that 'Upload' speed was not important again and there was nothing they could do about it.
    - They had no idea what 'Cable Fill' was.
    - Told us to turn the hub on/off as often as possible ( we did this and have continued to do this since first installation with absolutely no improvement whatsoever )
    - Only to use Bt Wholesale test ( Common sense surely ? I already use to retrieve the results I post on here )
    - They would call back after arranging another engineer visit
    GF called at 12:40pm this afternoon and we have not yet received a call back - Nothing new, this is about the fourth time this has occured.

  • Since regrade no increase in Upload Speed? Is this...

    Hi all,
    My BT Infinity has now been upgraded to the 80/20 service for just over a week. The download speed has doubled from 35 Meg to circa 70 Meg. But the upload speed is stuck at circa 7 Meg, which is good but it hasn't increased from the 40/10 service. I would expect the upload to be circa 14 Meg. Is there a reason why? Is there anyway to increase the upload speed even at the expense of download speed?
    Thanks
    Download speedachieved during the test was - 72.43 Mbps
     For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 12 Mbps-77.43 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
     IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
    Upload speed achieved during the test was - 7.68Mbps
     Additional Information:

    Try the upload speed test at http://mcslhr.visualware.com/myspeed/myspeed_line_capspeed.html.  The bt tester grossly underestimates upload speed, especially if you have significant latency.  It was giving mine as around 6 or 8, when a proper tester (as above) or a good real site was giving 17.
    If you have problems with the capspeed tester above (it sometimes has Java issues), http://speedtest.net/ still suffers a little from underestimating upload, but not nearly as badly as the BT tester.  It gave 12 or 13 at the same time I was getting the above results.
    Now my line and latency are improved the differences are there but smaller: capspeed 17.0, speedtest 15.7, BT wholesale 13.7, BT retail 9.17.

    Very slow upload speed via infinity 2 (business) unlimited after phone line fix (street cabinet) ?
    Had my line fixed today by engineer (no dial tone).
    Download rate near normal but upload = 0.73Mbps!?
    I reset modem and router after he left and appreciate my profile is probably in need of some TLC after a weeks line fault, but is this normal in this situation? I heard it can take some time to reprofile my line and before it was fixed it was even worse at 0.10Mbps
    Just seems very low considered the line is now operational again.

    48Hrs+ on from residential line reconnection my business infinity 2 broadband upload speed is now approaching normal speed levels.
    What a 10 days that was all because some ass disturbed the cabling in the street cabinet!
    Yes I'm aware I have business broadband and am talking about it in a residential based forum, but my actual phone line is still residential that it is supplied over and the business broadband product is much the same animal as that supplied to residential customers i.e. Infinity 2 Unlimited. Only the mail and option of static i.p. appear different - that is all.
    Jeez.

  • Diabolical upload speed/customer service issues

    Before Xmas I decided to switch to BT from Sky as I was hopeful that I would soon be able to get BT Infinity as my exchange (Radlett) was enabled last year. However the next day I phoned back as I had forgotten to check that the service included a static IP address. I was informed that BT do not offer static IP's to residential customers so I was given the option to cancel the switch and stay with BT. I confirmed that I wished to cancel the order and the operator told me that I did not need to take any further action.
    On 13th January I received a BT Hub 4 and a text message saying that my BT broadband/phone had been activated! I called customer services and they confirmed that the cancellation request had not been implemented and apologised. They suggested that I use the BT service until I could switch back to Sky. However the speed that I have had with BT has been terrible. I have made numerous calls to report the problem and received conflicting information. I have been promised call backs that never happen. I have been given a "priority" SMS number to request a call back within 1 hour that never happens.
    The problem I am having is that the ADSL service randomly drops out altogether (red light on Hub) but the whole time I have very very slow upload speeds. These range from 0.01mb to 0.03mb. This is completely unusable.
    I have had numerous line tests and speedtests. The line tests results have come back with different results. Finally they accepted there was a fault and an engineer visited on 20/1/15. He found a faulty cable outside the property which he repaired and said that everything was now fine. However whilst the drop outs have been less frequent and the upload speed is consistently above 10mb, the download speed is still 0.01mb to 0.03mb.
    The overseas call centre operators keep reading a scripted blurb about how BT do not give any upload speed guarantees. However when I reported the fault was still there on the evening of the engineer visit I was told that this would be because the line will take 24 hours to settle down and he guaranteed me that I would see a considerable improvement in upload the following day.
    My upload speed with Sky was always above 1mb.
    Help!
    Regards
    Justin

  • What upload speed do I need to upload the XL photo books with over 25 pages?

    I have just recently gotten a new Internet provider and the max upload speed I can get is 1mbps but I am only getting .4 mbps at the most.  When trying to upload an XL photo book with over 26 pages it keeps failing to transfer/upload and the error message says to check the internet connection.  I'm wondering what upload speed I need to upload?  I need to cancel this internet provider before my free month runs out if 1mbps is not going to be fast enough.

    Well I have my first order coming in tomorrow (according to Fedex) and I have my fingers crossed.
    So far I haven't been able to find any local printers that will print and bind the books at a reasonable cost - best I've found so far is $200 (or more) per book.
    Hardly cost effective for my relatively meager budget.
    I've explored Asuka a littoe more, and their quality does appear to be superior at first glance, but it seems I am not able to take advantage of submitting my aperture-generated book directly. According to their templates I have to put everything together manually in Photohop. Great for end-control, but one thing that made me pursue this was the ability to generate a book inside Aperture using versions direct from collection (any changes I made to an original image were automatically incorporated in my book. Had I done it all manually, teh time/effort I'd be putting into the book with be well over 5x greater!
    I've also looked at shutterfly.com so far - and they seem promising, and am wiating for my colleagues order to go through before I get too excited.
    Either way, I hope to have my first printing this week - I'll keep ya posted!

  • Horrendeous upload speed

    I have had a fault for several weeks now after 9 or so months of no problems.  Despite being put through to the Indian call centre (who insist that there is no fault) lots and kindly keep closing the case, I still have huge problems.  It can take minutes to upload the Google homepage, 50% of the time I can't even run the BT Wholesale speed tester as the upload part comes with a 'Error #2032'.  The dowload speed is fine at nearly 7Mbps; the max I can get, but the upload speed varies between 0.00Mbps and 0.04Mbps.  BT say that the line is fine, but I'm connected directly to the exchange having taken off the cover of the main socket and still can't get any better.  This issue is across all my devices, laptop, PC, smartphones etc, which all work fine on other WiFi networks.  I am convinced that there is a problem at the exchange, but can't get BT to even send out an engineer to check, despite saying I'll pay.

    I don't know if anyone can help me; we've recently began having problems with our Vodafone SureSignal box which are caused by the suddenly low upload speed on our BB, through our home hub? • Extremely slow Wi-Fi upload speeds since upgrading

    Hi everyone, apologies in advance if there's an answer to this buried somewhere here or on the 'net but I promise, I've been looking for and trying solutions for a while and just cannot crack this one.
    Since upgrading to Mountain Lion my upload speed seems to be 'throttled' to a virtual standstill when using my iMac's Wi-Fi. Downloads however are fine.  Weird or what??
    Using Filezilla as an FTP client I can see the exact connection speed in real-time and the same thing always happens - for about 3 seconds the connection is great, then it suddenly drops to somewhere around dial-up speeds.  Restarting the Wi-Fi repeats this - fast for a couple of seconds then back down again.
    I've played merry **** with my ISP and they replaced the router and checked the cabling - but it's not their fault it turns out though as using a wired ethernet connection works fine (on my Xbox I play on Xbox Live as well - again, no problems).  Another way I'm sure it's not the router is that as well as replacing it, my iPhone can upload to, say, Facebook no probs via Wi-Fi.
    I read about problems with Time Machine so, even though they relate to a wireless Time Capsule, I unplugged and switched it off and, weirdly, that solved it apparently... for about 1 day.  Now I have all my external drives unplugged - I have quite a few - but I can't recreate the 'solution'.
    I'm sure it's not the site as it happens on several - Facebook, Mixcrate, Dropbox...
    I've updated Java, all three of my browsers (Safari of course, Firefox and Chrome) and still no joy.
    Other things I've tried - switched off the OS X firewall, switched off the Avast antivirus program, changed the DNS settings and deleted the SystemConfiguration folder as decribed in this article - http://blog.macsales.com/14629-mountain-lion-has-wi-fi-issues - umm, I think that's everything I've tried?!?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance guys - Brett

    I thin you did everthing you can.
    If you connect to another network do you still have the problem?

    No variables have changed at my end (that I can think of) but now my upload speed is barely 2Mbps. Whilst my download speed is also lower - I'm not as concerned about that for what I am needing it for.
    http://speedtest.btwholesale.com
    Shows 57.76 down
    2.06 up
    Ping 42.63
    I have tried resetting the modem and home hub, a different router - I've compared LAN and WLAN (on both 2.4 and 5Ghz frequencies), used a pc, used a MAC, tried at different times of day but for reasons unknown the upload speed has taken a really noticeable dive in performance.
    I have phoned BT tech support - they advised 'upload speeds aren't gauranteed for residential customers'. They don't appear to agree that a drop in upload of 80%+ is fault related. I can see myself having another go at speaking to them - but before I do :
    Can anyone suggest how I can progress this to get my upload speeds nearer where they were? Or steps to try to isolate where the issue is? Could noise on the line affect upload more than download speeds?
    Solved!

    Good luck.  A few suggestions below, but I am afraid I don't think they will help.  Might be worth contacting the mods at: http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951 .  But be aware they take 3 working days to reply: sometimes more if busy; but they have a good record of getting things solved once they are on the case.

    Check the upload profile from the wholesale speedtest.  It is almost always 20Mbps for an Infinity2 connection, but something could have gone wrong there.
    ~~~
    Try a different browser, browser with plugins turned off, firewall and antivrus (temporarily) off, and safe mode.  Probably won't make any difference, but still a fairly easy experiment.
    ~~~
    If you have an HG612 router, unlock it and monitor stats.  Or buy one on eBay and unlock it.  Keep modem resets down to an absolute minimum; no problem with HomeHub or other router resets.
    ~~~
    Try connecting a PC or Mac directly to the modem: a bit of a faffle I am afraid.
    - connect from the modem LAN1 (that is usually connected to the HomeHub/router), to the standard ethernet port on the PC/Mac (that is also usually connected to the router.)  So the HomeHub is out of the picture.
    - Make a pppoe connection.  On a PC it will be something like
    - 'network and Sharing Centre',
    - 'Set up a new connection',
    - 'Connect to the Internet, set up a broadband or dial-up connection'
    - 'Broadband PPPoE'
    - Then enter username '[email protected]' and password 'bt'.
    Detail may vary a little between different version of windows, and of course even more different on Mac or Linux.
    Repeat your speed tests and see how they go.
    That will help check out if the HomeHub is the problem.  Seems unlikely as your have already tried another router.
  • Poor upload speeds
    Hi
    I had Infinity installed a week or so ago and since the momement the engineer turned on my mac and did a speed test the upload speeds have been shocking. The download speed is amazing though I was given a promise of 36 down and 8 up and so far the download has been constantly over 37 but with uploads between 0.19 and 1.5, the ping is pretty good at 17Ms to 22Ms
    My connection is the fibre to the premises and the optical cable goes straight into the openreach Modem.
    I use 2 imacs (both cabled to the home hub 3)
            2 ipads (both wifi)
            2 iphones (both wifi)
    And all devices have this issue.
    As a photographer I upload large files to clients and to dropbox etc and the slow upload is a problem, it was faster on the old bt adsl service I had even though my download spped was only around 5mbs.
    Yesterday I was aso having some real issues getting web pages with time outs and pages needing multiple F5 to load them and even then ads etc on them not loading......seemed to be worse with pages/ads served from Google..... but i'm not sure if that's connected or just a general network issue, even though theres nothing in my area listed on the service status page.
    Has anyone else had such low up speeds with FTTP ?
    Thanks in advance
    Hi, thanks for the replies
    i don't think the speedtester beta is working correctly at the moment as i get the following results
    37.65 downstream
    0.00 upstream
    261.50 ping latency
    i did the test several times and the download is the same, the upload speed maxed at 0.19 but the ping got to over 400Ms
    using the tester at speedtest.net i get good pings of 17 to 19ms and consistent 37mb download but real low upload
    I think i am on option one, it's fibre to the premises and in my case it's right the way into the modem , not a master socket so there's no copper wires involved.
    The email i have with the expected speeds says 40mbs max down, 10 up max with 38 / 9.5 expected.
    thanks
