Upload through inline IPS increases inspection load

The   IPS-4240-K9  [IPS Version 7.0(4) E4] is deployed in inline mode before the ASA and perimeter router .The design is  LAN->IPS->ASA->Internet Router. The problem is that when i am uploading on the internet the IPS inspection load increased to 100% and the devices beyond the IPS become non-responsive(ping drops from ASA and router).Surprisingly the ping response on IPS does not break, when I put the IPS in never inspect mode (by pass on) the problem does not happen.Hence its confirm that the issue is with the IPS and its inspection load due to upload.
Please guide on how to resolve it . thanks

Hi Sawan,
No there is no particular signature firing a lot..normal signatures which do fire in normal operation..
By traffic load u mean the size of file being uploaded ,even if we upload a file between 20-40 MB the ping drops on the devices beyond IPS starts and continues until the file is uploaded..once the file is uploaded completely which in the case of 20-40 MB is in within seconds the situation returns to normal...
We will upgrade soon ...but is there any bug in this release related to this problem ??
Thanks for the reply ..

  • Monitor Inspection Load IPS ASA-SSM-20

    All,
I am aware there is a feature request but don't see any updates.  Taking the chance here that its fallen through the cracks and someone has figured out another way to monitor inspection load on ASA-SSM-20 IPS.  We are currently running 7.0(5a)E4.  I want to be able to use Solarwinds Orion to monitor Inspection Load on our IPS devices.  Does anyone know if that is yet possible...if so how?
    Thanks!

  • IDSM-2 inspection load high

We have an IDSM-2 installed in our core switch and we are facing problem now, The module is hanging randomly and we can not login through session or GUI at that time. The version running is 7.0(4) E4 and we need to restart the module to recover the same. After the reload we have found that the Inspection load is touching 100 % continuosly , It is working in promiscous mode and only two vlans (server vlans behing FWSM) are monitoring. One of the Vlan is having more number of  servers when I removed the same Vlan  from the capture the inspection load comes back to normal ... Did some one face this problem before ? Is it really a through put issue ?? How can I confirm that ? Or is it due to any bug?

    Hello Dustin,
Thanks for the reply, I have checked the interface status aqd found that FIFO overuns in the sensing interface 0/7 but it is not increasing. Also found that inspection load normal at this point of time, I think when it reaches 100 % it will increase the FIFO counters. Below are the interface status..

  • Flat file upload through BPS webinterface

    Hi ,
I want to load a flat file ( format in CSV) through web upload  into a master data infoobject.
that is i want to upload through BPS webinterface . (3.5 version)
Is it possible to write everything in a BSP application without the help of Planning level or layout or functions.
but only through webinterface and a BSP application and can abap coding be included in directly in .htm page.
    kindly help me out.

    Hi,
I don't think so you 'll be able to write the abap code directly in htm page.Web interfaces are used for the purpose of creating and using user interface .It is no where linked to the logic or the activity that has to be performed using abap code directly.
You have to use the planning level and planning function for uploading the data through flat file. You can check the How to guide in forum's.
You can also create Transaction code for uploading the master data, through abap code you can provide buttons to upload it.

  • Ciscoips inspection load issue

    Hi Team,
I am facing a network slowness and IPS inspection load going high on my IP 4200 device.
Hence I reimaged and upgraded the signature to the latest. In spite of it, again the issue persists and I had to disable inspection as a work around to reduce the impact of my network.
My IPS version is  7.1(9)E4 on device is 4240.
I doubt, if it is due to traffic load ? the issue occurs only during the peak hours. How to check it my device is capable enough to handle the load? can someone guide me..

    Hi,
if you deleted all Red request , you can REPEAT DELTA ,
when you re-schedule the load again , system will give you one message saying that 'Last delta was incorrect/not successfully, and would give u option to repeat the the same load again,
    shouldn't be any problem.
Are u loading data from DSO to Cube OR Cube to Cube ?
    Cheers,
    Sukhi

  • ASA-SSM-10 inspection load 100% (version 7.0(5a)E4

    Hi all,
I have a challenge with the IPS module in the ASA5520, the ASA-SSM-10. When we start a test to connect to the webservers I get a inspection load of 100% and traffic/performance will slow down.
We test with 63000 sessions per minute which perform a load of: from the test-servers(clients) to the web-servers of 20.000 kbits/sec and traffic from the web-servers back to the test-servers(clients) 75.000 kbits/sec.
Can you please advise what to do because we cannot go live with this environment only when this is fixed.
    Thanks in advance,
    Erik Verkerk.

    Hi Bob,
thanks for you reply/suggestion and you understood the numbers correctly. Unfortunately the AIP-SSM-10 module must inspect this kind of load. I can test, within 8 hours time, a lower amount of traffic.
I do have some questions for you:
When you have a traffic of 75Mb/s what is your inspection load saying 80%?
Regarding the specs Cisco tells in the documentation of the ASA5520 that when you are using a AIP-SSM-10 you can firewalling and IPS a maximum of 225Mb/s. Now I understand that this is probably the commercial figures but Iám only looking for half of this, 95MB/s. Do you have an explaination for this?
Perhaps the amount of signatures is too much: I have 1500 signatures active, can you tell how much active signatures you run in your AIP-SSM-10?
    Last but not least question:
It is hard for me to find some usefull documentation, specific troubleshooting the IPS, do you have suggestions?
I hope you have the time to answers these questions it certainly helps me to understand the IPS and fix the problem.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Erik.

  • Diverting traffic to IDSM for inline IPS mode

I have a catalyst 6500 swtich containing FWSM and IDSM-2 module. Vlan 1000 is the outside interface for the fwsm to which all bussiness servers are mapped (vlan 900, inside interface of fwsm).
I want to inline IPS all the traffic going to these bussiness servers.
I have no issue with IPS configuration.
Could you please guide me with a configuration for 6500 switch for diverting this traffic.
I can provide 6500 configs if required.
    An example would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your situation, but here is how I have a gateway 6K switch set up with an external 4255 IPS device. You should be able to substitute the IDMS2 though.
    Internet -> port 1/2 Vlan 5 -> port 3/1 Vlan 5 -> 4255 vlan pair to -> port 3/2 Vlan 2 -> MSFC Route Module -> rest of vlans internal...
What I am doing in bringing my uplink in on a physical port that is in Vlan 5. I put one side of my IPS sensor into Vlan 5. These two ports are the only ports in Vlan 5. The IPS sensor port is vlan paired through the sensor to a port in Vlan 2. From this point, my MSFC route module has virtual interfaces for Vlan 2 and all of the rest of my internal Vlans. There is no route entry for Vlan 5, it is a pure switching vlan.
What I like about this setup is that the IPS is transparent. If I have a problem with my IPS device or if I am doing an image upgrade, I can move the vlan for port 1/2 into Vlan 2 and logically bypass the IPS device...taking it out of inline without having to change anything else in the switch config and only having to wait for the spanning tree to converge.
For the IDSM2, since the ports are trunk ports, you'd want to set the native vlan to the target vlan of each port and set the allowed vlans to just the target vlan of each port (ports 7 & 8).
    Hope this is useful,
    Scott

  • IDSM inspection load on 100%

Now I have IDSM with 100% inspection load on busy hour and followed by missed packets percentage increasing at that time.
The IDSM interface is setting as promiscuous interface
Is it means my network throughput will limited by IDSM max inspection load / throughput which is 600Mbps?
    Thank you
    Marcel.

No, the throughput wil not be limited in the network when you are in promiscous mode. But your visibility for attacks is highly limited.
You should configure your span/capture settings on the 6k5 to only send as much traffic to the IDSM as this module can handle.
Just remember that the IDSM-2 is a ten years old system and can't catch up with the typical traffic-demand we are having nowadays.
It's time to change the IDSM against an actual external sensor.

  • When inline IPS's are powercycled...

using the CLI (or gui) reset command, will network traffic continue to pass through if the IPS is configured for inline mode?
I know i could find out in a matter of minutes, but i'd rather not mess with our live network ;)

The HW ByPass Switches generally have both Electronic and Mechanical mechanisms for controlling the ByPass functionality.
The Electronic Mechanisms are what the HW ByPass Switch will use while it is receiving power. It will electronically be monitoring the link between the itself and the 2 sensor ports (the 2 sensor ports being used for inline monitoring).
If the link goes down, then the HW ByPass Switch can electronically detect the link down, and will ByPass the sensor.
If, however, the HW ByPass Switch itself loses power, then this is when the Mechanical mechanism kicks in.
On power loss the HW ByPass Switch will immediately loose any link to the sensor (ByPasssing the sensor regardless of whether or not the sensor is up ).
And mechanically the other 2 interfaces of the HW ByPass Switch (the 2 connected to the other devices, aka the switches and/or routers and/or firewalls) will connect to each other and act like a simple wire. The HW ByPass Switch turns into just an expensive wire when it looses power.
So the HW ByPass Switch is capable of passing traffic when it looses power. It will not send traffic to the sensor when it has lost power, but will allow the other 2 devices to send traffic to each other (hence the ByPass).
Now I see there has been confusion between a Tap and and a HW ByPass Switch.
These are 2 separate pieces of hardware.
A TAP is used only for promiscuous monitoring. It only Copies packets to the sensor, and can not be used with an InLine sensor for InLine monitoring.
A HW ByPass Switch is only used for InLine monitoring. It sends the real packet through the sensor, and so can not be used with a promiscuous sensor because all packets would go to the sensor and never come back to the HW ByPass Switch.
Some of the confusion is that some vendors like NetOptics produces both Taps and HW ByPass Switches. So when you go to make your purchase you will need to be very clear on whether you want a Tap for promisucous monitoring or a HW ByPass Switch for InLine monitoring.
What you will also find out is that the technology for Taps and for HW ByPass Switches are complimentary. And it would not surprise me that in a year or 2 you woudl start seeing hybrid boxes that can be configured to work as a Tap OR a HW ByPass Switch (similar to how Cisco IPS Sensors can be configured for promiscuous IDS or inline IPS)

  • Unique ID during upload through WebADI integrator

    Hi All,
Is there any unique ID generated for each upload through a custom Integrator (similar to fnd_global.conc_request_id for concurrent programs)?
    Thanks,
    Sumanth

    JE,
Normally we use row id or integration id for this, we populate this value in the external id field (for the records created manually) so that we can do bulk update. My personal experience is row id's are more reliable than integration id's and it has always worked for me :) (my technical team also prefers to use the row id for WS as this value cannot be changed). What kind of linking problem did your people face by using row id?
If you are looking for some other unique single value identifier, I dont think any other than row id, integration id and external unique id exists. Else you need to go with “On Demand predefined fields” option (First Name, Last Name, Email, Work Phone # for contact records).

Can you enlighten me what can I do I need to use my e-mail program urgently !!!
    Thanks for your help

I'm not sure what "IPS wireless" is, but unless you have an Apple Wi-Fi base station (such as a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express), AirPort Utility won't see anything.
You might try defining a new SMTP server to see if that will work any better.
