Uploading a PDF "within" my Captivate project

Hi, I would like for learners to have the option of clicking an attachments link within my Captivate project so that they can download a file that is relevant to my course WHILE they are watching the video.  Can Captivate do this?  I've used a similar feature on Articulate Presenter.
Thanks,
Robyn

Hi Robyn,
Welcome to Adobe Forums.
In order to download a file from the Captivate output, you need to attach a file in a Captivate project on any button or click box.
Add a button or a click box then go to Properties > (define the) Action > On Success > (Select) Open URL or File > (Type the name of the file in) URL:  and then publish the project.
After publishing the project send the File along with the output or paste the file in the output folder, so that the object (button or click box) would be able to find the file which has been attached to it.
I hope this will help you.
Please let me know the status along with some more information:
1) Version of Captivate?
2) What kind of an output are you taking from Captivate?
3) Are you using any LMS to upload the output?
Thanks
Vikas

  • How can I make multiple quizzes within one Captivate project?

Hi guys! Really liking Captivate 5.5, especially the way random question slides can lift questions out of a question pool...very elegant!
Sadly though, I've come up against a bit of a wall. In my project, I want to have 3 separate quizzes that all use the same question pool; a 10, 30 and 50 question-long quiz. Each one needs to have its own results page.
It's easy enough to see what I mean by looking at the screenshot below:
The idea was to have about 105 slides in total, with slides 10 - 20 being the 10 quiz slide, 21 - 51 being the 30 question quiz and 52 - 102 being the 50 question quiz.
There are three invisible buttons placed over those 10, 30, 50 text boxes. In the picture, the '10 question' button would jump to slide 10, the '30 question' button would jump to slide 21, and the '50 question' button would jump to slide 52, jumping the user to the start of their designated tests.
Though I can create the 10 random question "block" easy enough, when it comes to adding the 30 question "block" it just adds the new random questions to the existing random questions. I want three separate quizzes, each with their own results screens please. (I don't want to daisy-chain to external projects, because the results of each test need to be used within the homepage.)
It just adds them on to the existing block!! Argh!!
Little bit ticked off with Adobe...the reason their products are so incredible is because they put no constraints on the user, and you can use their tools to create things even the developers never dreamed of. Like in Photoshop for example, I bet when the dropshadow fx was created, the developers never realised that it would be used to give a metallic 'stamped' look to text by turning it to white and applying it just inside the text.
Captivate, though amazing most of the time, has a nasty habit of stomping on my toes. You can't set grade boundaries and have quizzes give out grades A+ to F- for example. You can only have 'pass' and 'fail', thus making it rather pointless for use in schools, contrary to how the program is advertised. Another example would be when I wanted to create a replay button. I thought that a button that jumped to the slide it was on would be a simple, no-BS replay button, but for some reason you can't make a button jump to its current slide. I downloaded a widget that worked in the end, but I wish Adobe would get off my back and let me do what I want!
Anyway, if you could help me out here it would be grand

I must say I have a little sympathy for the Captivate developers on this occasion.  As you say, they've created an application that does so much, that when you eventually run into a hard boundary of some kind, the effect is somewhat jarring.  However, every application, no matter how good, has limits.  I'm probably one of the worst offenders when it comes to asking the Adobe Captivate Development Team for enhancements (I think I've logged over 70 enhancement requests for Captivate 6 alone).
In your case, you want to have three different quizzes in one project file, each with it's own separate Quiz Results page.  Lilybiri's blog explains how to set up your own faux Quiz Results pages using system variables and custom user variables, but you're going to find this to be quite a lot of trouble.  Even if YOU want to consider these as three separate quizzes, as far as Captivate is concerned they're just one big quiz with 50 questions.  So Captivate will calculate it's internal results based on a 50 question quiz, even if your users select the 10 question version.  So achieving a final Pass/Fail result is going to be problematic at best.
As Lilybiri suggested, your better strategy would be to break this up into separate modules so that you can get your three separate quiz results (all done in standard Captivate) as well as correct results based on the actual number of questions done by the user.
As far as grades A-F is concerned, there's nothing to stop you from using Advanced Actions and User Variables to calculate the user's score as a grade.  You need a user variable that stores the user's grade (e.g. var_Grade). And you need a fairly complex Conditional Advanced Action (e.g. caa_CalculateGrade) with several clauses each of which goes something like:
    If
cpQuizInfoPointsscored is lesser or equal to [highest score for a particular grade]
    AND
greater or equal to [lowest score for a particular grade]
    Actions
Assign var_Grade with [the appropriate grade for that range of scores]
Your conditional action will need one of these clauses for each separate grade.  Once your variable has been assigned a grade based on the user's score, you can display it in a text caption somewhere on the quiz results page or on a slide thereafter with suitable commendations/ commiserations.

  • Can you embed a PDF into a Captivate 8 project?

    Hi,
Can you embed a PDF document into a captivate project?
I know i shouldnt compare, but in Articulate Story Line, you are able to add 'resourses' into the project which sit alongside the eLearning to provide further reading.
Can you do this in Captivate? but without it linking to an external sourse such as local or shared drive?
    Thanks
    Chris

    To tmpe222,
I'm not a Cp expert, but it seems to me that there's no sense in simply trying to stick a pdf document in the Scorm package. What good would that do? The file would be in the package, but that doesn't mean it would be 'embedded in the project' in any meaningful sense of the term.
I don't know of any way to embed a pdf document directly into a Cp project. But couldn't you simply convert the pdf file into an image (jpeg or gif)? This you could easily insert in your project. It would be inserted as a standard object. And then you could do all the nice things that you can do with any object: put it on slide to be accessed only if the participant wants to view it; use effects so that it enters nicely; add annotation . . . the sky's the limit.
Does this help at all, or am I on the wrong track?
    Best regards,
    Marvin DuBois

  • How to upload a Captivate Project six to Black Board nine

Trying to upload a Captivate six(version .240) Project  to Blackboard 9.  The content modules do not need scoring.
I understand you publish the Captivate project to SWF and tick output to be a zip, then upload the zip package. Blackboard 9 has the import package option. But how do you tell BB to unzip the file to start the HTML?Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I have not worked with BlackBorad LMS , But generally when you upload your zipped content on LMS it generates a LINK which you can share it with your users
Once you open that link in your webbrowser it plays the output for you.
    Hope this helps

  • Track completion of embedded swf within captivate project

I have a swf created within captivate 4 which is a traiining simulation.  Now I want to embed this simulation on a screen within a new host captivate project and enable the next progress button only when the embedded training simulation is done. What is a good way to do this?
While trying different options, a problem I am running into is the embedded training simulation does not close when all the interactivity is done even if the swf publish options are set to close upon completion.  It wants to run for a set time. Any ideas are much appreciated.

    Hi Gaspar,
Are you using a preloader for the project? If so, the default
one in Captivate waits for 60% of the project to load before
playing. Perhaps try to add the preloader if you aren't using one,
or remove it if you are to see if that makes a difference. In
Captivate 3, you can change this option in Preferences -->
Project --> Start and End --> Loading Screen.
    Good luck,
    David
Edit: I just tried this too and got the same results when
publishing with all versions of Flash - I was a little surprised to
see it even with Flash 7 exports, because Captivate has let me
embed .swf animations into a single .swf project file using Flash
    7. I'm guessing that whatever Flash "engine" Captivate uses to
create its own FMV .swfs must be Flash 8 or 9. That would be
something that would be nice to adjust - especially because of the
lack of the ability to merge .swf files into one file. I guess I'll
    send a feature request again...

  • Adobe captivate multiple quizzez within a single project

Hello I am trying to create a test that includes 6 different exams, but i want the usert to have to pass each exam with at least a 75% before they can access the next quiz. I am very new to captivate. Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thank you

You will need 6 different Captivate projects, each of which will have one quiz (exam).  You can set the passing percentage for each project file to 75% under Quiz Settings > Pass Fail.  To force the user to pass each module of your course before they can do the next one, you really need to be serving up your course content via a Learning Management System.  The LMS usually handles that side of it.  If packaging your course modules as a multi-SCO SCORM course for your LMS, you'll ideally be using Adobe's Elearning Suite 6, which comes with the Multi-SCORM Packaging tool.  The version that comes with ELS 6 can accommodate more of the SCORM rules than previously possible in earlier versions.

  • Videos within captivate project grow to full screen on click?

    Hello,
I will be importing several videos into my Captivate project -- each will take up about 1/3 of the screen.  I would like to add a button that the user to click to grow the video to full-screen size and take up the entire frame of the Captivate project.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I know some javascript, but I am not even sure where to start in javascript (if that is necessary.)
    Thanks for any help!
    Ryan

    Hello,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums.
You may another way to achieve it.
Add your videos twice (1st one in small size and another full screen size)
On the button click call an Advanced Action (Standard Action) -> "Hide" : 1st one and "Show" : Full Screen
Note : You need to "uncheck" Visible for the full screen video, once you add the full screen size (To hide the video)
    Thanks,

  • Free hosting for Captivate projects

I am a student in instructional design and I want to create an online portfolio to showcase some of my e-learning modules. Does anyone know of a free hosting service where I can upload Captivate project (HTML or SWF)?
    thanks

You can try to use Scorm Cloud where you can upload published zipped output from Captivate, In order to do that you have to enable the reporting of your module within Captivate.
Visit the link to create your account for free -   SCORM Cloud

  • HELP: I need to link a PDF within PDF and be able to open and return to original PDF

I have a master PDF and have attached 7 supplemental PDF documents. I created "click here" icons and used the steps below so that the linked document would open. The problem is, once I open the supplemental PDF, it closes the original master. I would like to close the linked document and return to the master view. Is there a way to do this?
Or is there a way to do this from InDesign? I created master file in InDesign and exported as an Interactive PDF.  I created the buttons and linked them to external files. This works great as long as the master PDF and the links are all in one file, but that is a pain to send to a viewer. Ideally, I want to be able to send the master PDF to a viewer and not have to send a links folder. Is there a way to embed the supplemental PDFs into the master so that they are all combined into one file AND have the ability to use buttons to call up one of the attachments, close, and return to the original?
    Thanks in advance!!

I want to do the same thing that the original poster of this question wants to do. I haven't worked extensively with Acrobat so am finding by trial and error the several ways PDFs within PDFs can be accomplished. I'm using a trial version of Acrobat Pro X and have experimented with three options.
1 - I've created a Portfolio and am impressed with what that can do, though I think it may be "overkill" for the current size of my project.
2 - I've also tried creating this project as an index but discovered that the links I'd created in the original docs didn't work when I moved the index and its contents (keeping the file structure the same). I presume this means the links are absolute? I also don't understand how it is that users search a .pdx file, or how to present what I want to be the original opening PDF of indexed docs.
3 - I've also thought to create one PDF with attached PDFs, so I'd like to have you expand on your comment about creating a master document and attaching documents to it.
The specifics of my project are these: I have created a master directory that contains approximately 120 links. Most of the links are repeated three times (users can find in the directory the item they need in three different ways: alphabetically, by application, or by module; hence each item listed once in each of three categories). I want to make that directory the "master" PDF that users open first, and then locate within that PDF the 5-8 PDF documents that contain all of the places to which the directory links. I want the "master" directory to be self-contained and completely "portable" as far as all of the documents and links are concerned so that when I make the PDF available from our website users can open the master from there or copy it and have all of the docs they need with all of the links intact. I think I prefer that all docs open in new windows, since returning to the original doesn't seem very user friendly in Acrobat (I like the tabs feature in FoxIt when multiple PDFs are open...).
I'd like an opinion about the best way to accomplish what I need to do, and am also wondering whether there are other options I am unaware of. BTW, the reason we've decided to document this whole project in PDFs rather than HTML is because this project contains a big number of tables, which do not look consistent across various browsers (i.e., most of our tables look fine in IE and Firefox, but awful in Google Chrome...). In researching my issue on the Acrobat Windows forum I see that rendering tables in Acrobat is also an issue that seems to be unresolved.
    Thank you!

  • Captivate project takes long time to load on LMS

So I developed a bunch of Captivate 7 modules for a course I'd been working on for some time. When I finally loaded these up on the LMS, I notice that when the modules are launched, a pop-up window opens with a grey background and just stays like that for up to 3-4 mins. I figured grey, because that's what I had set as the HTML page color in the skin editor. However the actual module contents take really long (3-4 mins) to load up. When I tried running all these modules locally from my computer, the grey screen fades into the splash animation within a second.
I figured that this was either due to a bandwidth issue or the LMS causing problems. So I then had these modules tested from our India and US offices (different internet connecttions, multiple LMSs). Same thing happened, takes up to 3-4 mins to transition from the grey screen to the splash animation (but loads up instantly when run locally). We then tried this on multiple LMSs like SABA, Moodle, and even tried this on SCORM Cloud and the same issue. The modules takes a long time to load up, so I kind of ruled out the LMS/bandwidth being an issue.
I'm speculating here, but what I think is happening is that the SCO is trying to download the entire module (about 10MB) to the users machine before it plays the splash animation -- if that's the case then is there a way to avoid that? I mean I don't want a 200 slide Captivate published project to be downloaded right from clicking the launch button -- it could stream through as the user advances through the module. Also, I've seen some pre-loader and Start/End options but not sure how those work.
Important to note here, the 3-4 min wait time from when the module is launched, is only for the first launch. If I were to close the browser popup (in which the SCO opened), and click launch again from the LMS, it's loads up almost instantly -- so I'm pretty sure something's happening in my Captivate project's loading settings which I can't put my finger on.
Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening and also what are some possible fixes to this. I can assure you that it's not an internet bandwidth issue because we've tested it on multiple internet connections and on several LMSs (even the client's LMS that this was tested on says that the initial load up takes too long).

All the symptoms you quote sure sounds like a bandwidth issue to me.
Obviously when you load a project directly from your hard drive then there's no issue with bandwidth.  But if you're pulling down 10 megs from a web server and it takes a while to start then bandwidth is the obvious issue.  I agree that 3-4 minutes sounds excessive for a 10 meg file but that depends entirely on how many users are sharing your bandwidth.  Try getting your people in these different locations to visit one of those websites that allows you to test your actual bandwidth.  It might not be as much as you think.
On another note...What do you have your preloader set to?  The default is 100% but you can usually set it to something like 25% without too much trouble.  That should cut the start time down appreciably but nothing is going to eliminate it completely because there'll always be some initial lag the first time your learners view the content.

I am using an iPad and unable to upload a PDF to insert as a post in our corporate website if you could assist I would be grateful. Thank you

  • How do I embed fonts into Captivate projects?

This question came up in May 2006 but was never really
answered. I'd like to know how to embed fonts into my Captivate
projects so that the output looks the same on all computers. While
the text animations are fine, the Text Caption fields are the ones
that seem to have fonts that go walkies on other computers. I know
you can embed fonts in PDFs. Why not in Captivate (unless I'm
    missing something in 2.0).

First, a tip for the forums: If you use the URL tags, your
post won't require horizontal scrolling - sorry, but I use Firefox
and entering a long URL totally blows my ability to smoothly read
the post ... you can manually add a text link by using the "L" tag
as shown below (I've put spaces in to avoid this being turned into
    another text link)
    [ L = Your Text]
    http://www.yourdomain.com [ /
    L ]
Back to your issue, Charinos. I'm glad you did find the URL,
but that thread and your problem are not even in the same world.
That thread deals with fonts in text-entry boxes (boxes for
end-user text-entry), and you are talking about text-captions, an
    entirely different object.
In fact, if you make changes and save those changes to a
text-caption, then publish the project, the fonts in your text
captions will remain stable and are not dependent on the fonts
installed on the end-viewer's machine. The reason is that when the
SWF is compiled, the text captions are converted to images and so
long as the file is viewed as intended in the HTML document - at
the proper size - the stretching you describe cannot take place.
I'm not saying you are seeing things, but if my understandings of
the Captivate machine are correct, what you are saying is happening
    cannot
be happening. Something else is going on, like a failure to
save changes, use of non-conforming text-caption boxes with a
resultant loss of margins, or something.
Sorry I'm not more help. I can't duplicate what you are
seeing but I hope someone else can help you out - I may still be
    misunderstanding your issue.

  • Embedding connect asset (captivate project) in web page

How do I reference a Connect address (asset) such as from the Connect server that don't end in an html file using the embed command in html so that the content shows on my web page?
    a.    I tried the flash object and movie in dreamweaver CS3 but I couldn’t get it to work.
    b.    If I upload the swf files to the same server as the web page I can use the embed command to push the swf files on a web page. I bypass the html page that makes the plugin announce a security warning.
    c.    If I do that the FLVs don’t play using Captivate 3 on an http server.
    d.    My Captivate projects works when I play the URL from the Connect Server and the FLVs play but I can’t embed them in a web page. Can I see some sample code.

    Hi Shekhar,
Thank you for your response, this was helpful, however the problem remains as to how the video is seen in the frame. Unless I specify a height for the iframe, (which I don't want to do as it need to be responsive) the height of the captivate project has huge borders, margins which I can't seem to get rid of when it is part of an iframe?
Please find screen capture of what is happening

  • PDF's From Captivate 5.5 Not Playing . . .

    Hello,
In the past couple of years I've developed about 15 presentations for our customers using Captivate.  They've all worked great until recently.  Today I dug in to see if I could figure out what the scoop is.  It looks like it all boils down to the fact that they don't like the latest version of "Adobe Reader" and "Flash Player".  With the latest versions installed here's what our customers (and myself) get:
If I uninstall all the latest and greatest and re-install Adobe Reader 9.5.0 then try the production.  Works fine like it always did.
Please tell me there's a better fix then downgrading.
    THANKS so much!
And if this has been posted and answered a million times before, I'm sorry I missed it.  I did look around quite a bit and didn't see a fix.

    Issue
When you publish Adobe Captivate projects with a TOC as PDF, the published SWF content doesn't play in Acrobat XI.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/kb/captivate-swf-doesnt-play-acrobat.html
    Solution
    1. Download the hot fix from the following locations:
    a. If you are using Adobe Captivate 6.0.1 (build 6.0.1.240), click here. https://workspaces.acrobat.com/app.html#d=dPNipWAhuCCdDrN4EZRGMA
    b.
    c. If you are using Adobe Captivate 6 update for subscription and Adobe Software Assurance customers (build 6.1.0.319), click here. https://workspaces.acrobat.com/app.html#d=UKMjxvniyoH5iIuf*CTJCw
Note: You are prompted to provide your Adobe ID and password while downloading the hot fix. If you do not have an Adobe ID, you can easily create one following the onscreen instructions.
    2. Extract the files from the downloaded ZIP file and save them in a folder, for example, my folder.
    3. Close Adobe Captivate.
    4. Navigate to the sdk\libs\cplibs folder in the Adobe Captivate installation directory:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 6 x64
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 6
    /Applications/Adobe Captivate 6
    5. Go to <install directory>\sdk\libs\cplibs\9.0 folder and do the following:
    Rename cpTOC.swccpTOC.orig, and MainMovie.swcMainMovie.orig.
    a. Copy cpTOC.swc and MainMovie.swc files from the downloaded ZIP (Step 2) in \sdk\libs\cplibs\9.0.
    6. Repeat step 5 for <install directory>\sdk\libs\cplibs\10.0 folder too.
    7. Launch Adobe Captivate and republish your project.
Important: With this fix, you can play the SWF file in Acrobat 11. However, self-paced learning is not supported. (When you stop and resume the course, the course begins all over again and does not take users to the point where they stopped earlier.)
