Uploading Images to Picasa - they appear lighter

When I upload images from Aperture to Picasa the images on Picasa appear to be somewhat lighter than the original in Aperture. The photos on Picasa appear to be overexpoxed by about 0.5 EV.
I save my images in Aperture in RAW format. Can the conversion from RAW to JPG by Picasa be the issue?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Apeture images are in RAW format

Do the images look the same in Firefox/Camino and Safari? Except for Safari (and its close relatives Omniweb and Shiira) no other current browser on any operating system is color-managed.
In non-color-managed applications photos will look different from computer to computer. Your best bet is to present the photos in a format that is close to the average calibration of monitors. sRGB is considered to be that for Windows PCs, for Mac systems using default factory settings you would need to use a variation of sRGB that uses a gamma of 1.8 (not sure if such a variation even exists) or calibrate the monitor using a gamma of 2.2. Or best use Safari which by virtue of being color-managed takes care of these differences.
To get really consistent results you should calibrate and profile your monitor using a hardware calibration device.

The desktop image is fine, taken from the exact same pool of jpg photos.  However, as soon as the slide show screen saver comes on, the images are scrambled.  What is it about the apple screen saver algorithm that scrambles the pics?

  • Last night suddenly when I right-click-view-images in firefox, they appear centered and against a black background. It's usually meant to be a white background and the image appearing at top left. How to revert it?

I'm having trouble with something in firefox, it's quite minor but still bugs me. Last night suddenly when I right-click-view-images in firefox, they appear centered and against a black background. It's usually meant to be a white background and the image appearing at top left. I can't remember what I did to change this if it's my fault; if someone knows how to revert it I'd be thankful.

cor-el : thanks for the pointers! I wish the solution isn't an add-on every time ... if such long-standing behaviour is going to change, the least that could be done is put in an about:config option to get back the old behaviour.

  • Photoshop saves images darker than they appear in-program

I am using Photoshop CS6 64-bit version, and I also had this problem with the previous Photoshop CS5 (64-bit aswell). (Windows 7 64-bit)
I've had this problem for a very long time and I've been looking for answers for tons of times however this time around I really want it fixed because it is very annoying.
    Whenever I save most images that I've edited or created in Photoshop, they get saved as darker than they are in the program;
It shouldn't be a monitor problem. I have two monitors and it occurs on both. When I save the image and open it on the same monitor for comparison, it is darker than it was in photoshop.
If I use a screen-cap tool like Gyazo directly in photoshop to upload a screenshot of the image to the web, it appears just as light as it should (I am not sure if it's 100% as light as it should, however it's definitely way better and lighter than saving the image then uploading it).
Here's a comparison. On the left it is the wallpaper opened in Photoshop. On the right side I have the image saved as a .PNG and shown using the default Windows Photo Viewer:
    http://i.gyazo.com/02f434cce077a672e0169f7c2875b3ef.png
You can see that there is a clear difference, and that it's way darker than it should be. It pretty much ruins the image in this case due to how dark it gets.
(Yes, I've tried saving a very wide range of image filetypes with no success)
Continuing on the monitor/screen-cap part above... So logically there should be some issues with the actual saving of the image in Photoshop. Am I using sRGB? Yes. I have checked all the settings in the color settings countless times to make sure it's right. I also tried playing a bit around with them to no avail. Here is a picture of my color settings (Ctrl+Shift+K): http://i.gyazo.com/b3f993b61e2e9c701d0820886670da36.png
I have both tried to reset my settings and re-installed Photoshop. As I also said I've had this problem with an earlier version of Photoshop aswell. I have tried to convert color profiles before I save the image and I've made sure it's saved using sRGB.
I'm convinced Photoshop is saving the image wrongly or something due to the screen-cap case.
If anyone has any leads on how to go about fixing this then please speak out. If you require any more information about my hardware/software or what I've tried, just ask.
    Thanks!

This has nothing to do with Photoshop. The problem is that Windows Photo Viewer displays the image incorrectly. Apparently it's choking on the display profile, while Photoshop manages to work with it.
Both applications are fully color managed and should display identically. If they don't the problem is nearly always the display profile.
Try to set sRGB as default display profile in Windows. If the difference disappears you know you have a bad profile and need to replace it. If you don't have a calibrator to make a new profile, just use sRGB for now. Manufacturer-supplied profiles are notoriously defective in any number of ways and should be avoided.

  • Help with placing images - why do they appear at 150% and look bad?

    Hi there,
    Relative newbie here.
I have my display performace in InDesign set to high. Whether I 'place' an image or simply drag it onto the page, and regardless of what image file format I use (tif, png, jpg, whatever), when placed, the images appear about 50% bigger than the source, and low-ish quality. I'm forced then to try to resize them manually so they look good on-screen and when printed.
Why when I place images do they not appear at 100%?
Is there a way to resize images other than grabbing the re-size handles and hoping for the best?
    Many thanks.

OK, if the scale says 100% with the direct select tool, that's what you have. Note that using the regular select tool (the black arrow) will ALWAYS show 100% in the scale fields unless you have set your prefs to "adjust scaling percentage," so that's why you use the direct select tool to check. You can also selct the image with either tool and look at the Info Palette. at 100% the actual and effective ppi listed will be the same. What resolution is currently listed in the Info Palette?
I asked about click vs, click and drag because in CS4 when you drag a frame it always scales the image to fit. This is not true in CS3.
Screen captures are typically 72 ppi at the size they are captured. 72 ppi is low for most print work, but for screen captures nobody really  expects much in terms of quality. You really are placing, right, not dragging from Photoshop into ID, which is the equivalent of pasting? Pasting an image gives you only the screen preview in CS3. I'm not sure you'd see a difference with a screen grab, though, since the preview would also be 72 ppi.
If the image is really too large on the page you can scale in ID by holding the Ctrl + Shift keys while dragging a handle. You must press the keys before clicking the mouse in Windows becasue there is a bug. You can also use the Scale tool, or enter a new scale value in the scaling fields. You can use actual dimensions in those fields if you include the units, by the way.
In Photoshop you can scale the image using Image > Image Size... If you uncheck the "resample image" box the resolutiuon will change in inverse proportion to the size, so reducing the size will increase the resolution, but there will be no differnce in quality over scaling in ID.

  • When I load images to PS they appear terribly grainy but are clean in other programs

When I load a picture into photoshop in RAW format it appears to be very grainy and distorted. Then when I view it from my computer instead of photoshop it's fine. Here's a snippet of the image from photoshop.
Here's the actual image (resized for easy upload to this forum).
PLEASE HELP! This just started today.

Chances are your display driver doesn't properly support Photoshop's OpenGL needs.
There are some very nice features tied to GPU accelerated drawing.  You should investigate whether there's a newer/better display driver available on the web site of the maker of your video card / GPU, and see if you can get better image quality using the accelerated features.  Normally the presentation is a good bit BETTER looking (when zooming, for example) with OpenGL enabled.

Unfortunately, photo stream on a PC is iffy at best.  Many people have problems getting it to work properly, including myself.  A work around would be to use an app like PhotoSync on your PC, which can send photos wirelessly to the camera roll on any of your iOS devices on the same wifi network.  Once in the camera roll, you iOS device will be added to your photo stream.

  • HT1229 Ive move photos but they appear as duplicates in iPhoto.   When you try and open them it says Photo can't be found.  I have thousands.  How do I get rid of these images?

Hi Ive moved photos but they appear as duplicates in iPhoto.   When you try and open them it says Photo can't be found.  I have thousands.  How do I get rid of these images?
Also I have many duplicate photos (from backups)  It would be great to be able to remove all duplicates at one time, like in Itunes.
    Can this be done?

You moved what photos from where and to where?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are not recognized. How can I fix this?

I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are "not recognized". I thought maybe my antivirus software was setting up a firewall, but I have disabled it, so that's not the case. Any suggestions as to  how I can fix this?

If the downloads are gone, it's possible that Windows is removing the downloads based on security policies set in IE. I realize that sounds strange, but it's related to Firefox's feature of submitting downloads to your virus scanner and marking them as having come from the internet.
To test this theory, you could try disabling the scan feature. I assume you have good "real time" antivirus protection which checks every file saved to your hard drive. (If not, you really should get that, and you can use Microsoft's free [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials Microsoft Security Essentials] for now until you have time to review all the available choices.)
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''scan''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone''' to toggle its value.
Firefox now should ignore Windows' download security. Does it change how Windows handles the file?

  • I have problems with uploading images to my printing company have the images have been manipulated through CS6 i have saved images as jpeg but the printer company tell me they are not j peg, they will not upload images save from a camera are fine

I have problems with uploading images to my internet printing company when  the images have been manipulated through CS6 and  i have saved images as jpeg  the printer company tell me they are not j peg,
but images saved from my phone or camera images that have not been manipulated upload fine, What am i doing wrong?

Save/Export them as JPG. Photoshop defaults to PSD, so make sure you select JPG and not just rename the file to .jpg.
There are two ways to save them as JPG: Regular Save as option or Save for Web & Devices
    Take your pick.

  • Images seem to print much darker than they appear on screen?

I have been using iPhoto to create cards and then I later save them as .pdf files so I can take them to another mac connected to an Epson 1400 printer and print them. Prior to making the cards in iPhoto, I do basic levels and auto color adjustments in Photoshop. Some of the cards that I am printing seem to be so much darker than the way they appear on screen. I understand that there is a differene between what is presented on a display and the way something may print, but the difference is so drastic. Is this something to do with iPhoto?
    Thanks.

Because every maker of computer, software and printer have a different definition of the various colors Apple and others got together to agree definitions that would work together. So if you assign a color space to an image - sRGB, say - then any software or hardware that respect the color space will be using the same meaning for 'green' or 'blue'.
In iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, check the box for Embed Color Sync Profile, and this will embed a profile on every pic you add from now on.
As to the one's already in, Old Toad has kindly created an Automator action that will add an sRGB profile to pics already in iPhoto. You can downlaod it from here.

  • Had to have my hard drive rebuilt in my PC (not Mac). When I reinstalled my music library from iTunes, several of the songs did not download properly - they appear in light colored ink on my library list but the songs will not play and will not synch

Had to have my hard drive rebuilt in my PC (not a Mac).  When I reinstalled my music library from itunes, some of the songs did not properly download.  They appear in light colored ink, but will not play and will not synch with my iPod.  How can I get all of my songs back?

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.
