Uploading my photos into iPhoto from an external hard drive

I have all my old digital photos (approx 17GB) on an external hard drive. I would like to upload them in to iPhoto on my iMac (OS X 10.6.8)
Some questions:
How can I stop any duplicate photos being uploaded into iPhoto (I already have small number of the old photos in iPhoto)
How do I upload the photos into 'Events'? What is the difference between Events and Albums?
Do I need to rename the albums on the hard drive before I upload them with new album names?
How can I delete duplicate photos I already have in iPhoto?
and lastly the iMac is set up with 4 users accounts on it - how do I share (in iPhoto) all these newly uploaded photos with the other users
So many questions, but If I do it right now it will save me hrs of work sorting all the photos out and renaming them all when they are in iPhoto

and lastly the iMac is set up with 4 users accounts on it - how do I share (in iPhoto) all these newly uploaded photos with the other users
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

    Hello, eco1.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like you are wanting to move your iTunes media folder to an external drive and have iTunes this folder from this location.  If this is the case then I would recommend taking a look at the article below.

  • Can i run i tunes/iphoto from an external hard drive?

does any one know if i can run ituens/iphoto from an external hard drive and if so how do i do it?

Drag the libraries to it, launch each application with the Option key held down, and point them there. The iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • How to back up a group of photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive

how to back up a group of photos[an album] in iPhoto to an external hard drive. not taking them out of iPhoto just backing up

If you're not taking them out of iPhoto, then you need to back up the iPhoto Library:
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • How do run iPhoto from an external hard drive?

I've moved my entire iPhoto library to an external hard drive and now can't remember how to open up iPhoto from that drive.

depress and hold the option key, launch iPhoto and use the resulting select library window to point to the new location - be sure to fully test the iPhoto library in the new location before deleting the old library and be sure tha tyour backup software is backing up the external drive

  • Moving iphoto from one external hard drive to another...

I have read through several posts on this, but can't seem to get it to work still. I have tried holding down the option key while opening iphoto so that I can direct it from my old hard drive to the new drive location. So, I select the new drive from the list, but then the iphoto library within that new drive is not highlighted in order for me to select it. So, I'm unable to change the location for iphoto. Please help.

Just a thought but try going thru Finder and double-click on the new location to have it open.
This ides not work with iPhoto 08. With iPhoto 08 (unlike earlier and later versions) double clicking on a library does not open that library, it simple launches iPhoto at the last used Library. Hence my suggestion: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

  • Help with using iphoto from an external hard drive

As my iphoto library became too big for my Powerbook I have moved picture folders to an external drive then deleted them from the PBook. My situation now is that I have created a new library on the external drive after having moved all my pictures to that drive and then moved folders from the old library into the new library and iphoto is not seeing any of the photos. Any ideas, please?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Here's the correct way to move the Library:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
My situation now is that I have created a new library on the external drive after having moved all my pictures to that drive and then moved folders from the old library into the new library
You did all this using the Finder? I'm afraid you've destroyed your old library. You'll need to create and populate a new library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I cannot open iphoto from my external hard drive.  its there but when i open it, it just opens my current iphoto library.

anyone have any clues about this?    I backed up my iphoto library last november.  Now i would like to open it up and use some of those images.  but when i plug in my external HD and try to open the iphoto library, all that happens is it opens my current iphoto library.    i know all of my images are on the HD bc i can control click the iphoto library in the HD and click 'show ackage contents' and all images are there.  plus the amount of space is correct.   I do not understand why i cannot pull up the images???   any help would be greatly appreciated     there has to be an explination, as well as a better way to retrieve all those images other than dragging each file indivdually and resaving it back to the computer.

The way to switch default libraries in iPhoto is to depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library command to switch to a new default library which will remain the library until you switch again
And note that if you make changes to your backup library it no longer a backup but a different library

  • I get error 8062 when trying to copy files from one external hard drive to another. It starts out copying files, but after 10 minutes or so it stops and I get the error 8062. The hard drive tech support says the problem is in my Macbook Air.

I cannot copy my doc and photos and videos from one external hard drive to a second external hard drive -- both plugged in to my MacBook Air -- I get Error 8062 and the copying (which seemed to be going on for 10 minutes) stops and nothing gets copied.
As any Macbook Air owner knows, there is SO LITTLE storage capacity on the computer that you have to back up big files onto an external hard drive to avoid getting the other annoying error that says you have no more memory/storage capacity/whatever the proper term is, and you cannot use the computer.
Backstory: Before this error cropped up, I had backed up lots of files to an external drive and then removed them from my computer. But then the external hard drive got corrupted and I could not access my entire photo library. Had to pay $850 to Kroll Ontrack to recover those files. I have now bought 2 new external 1 Terrabyte  hard drives as protection against another such disaster. BUT I cannot copy the files from the first hard drive where all my reovered files now sit, to another backup hard drive.
    Feeling vulnerable. Please help.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

  • I am trying to save photos from iphoto to an external hard drive

    Help!
I bought a "WD Elements" external hard drive to save photos and make more room on my Macbook Pro. I can't move pics from iphoto to my "WD Elements" hard drive . I've recently gone on a few vacations and have a few thousand pictures to download. I'd like to save them onto my computer and then my external hard drive, but would first like to place old pics from iphoto onto the external hard drive and I am unable to figure out how to do this. I've tried selecting pics and then dragging them into the "Elements" external device, but this is not working (a white circle with a line through it pops up, as if I am unable to do this). When I select pics and click export, a message says that it's unable to export these pics to the hard drive device.
    Please help! ~Thanks!
