Uploading photos to online print services.

Can anyone tell me where my main iPhoto library file is stored - the one that contains all my photos as I've edited them? All I can find is the dizzying number of sub-files arranged by date, and these are largely useless to me (as I try to upload to Ritz Pix) since so many of them do not reflect the editing I've done to them.

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

Uploading photos to online print companies

I upload lots of photos for printing from iPhoto to various online printing companies, mainly photo box. They use an aurigma uploader. I have installed Lion and despite having reinstalling the java as requested I can no longer drag and drop files into the uploader. When I try to it simply opens the file in Safari, I am probably missing something really simple, can anyone help?

Low Resolution when uploading to online printing service

When I upload photos from iPhoto to an online printing service (Walmart, Costco, Shutterfly) photos show up as low resolution. When I take the picture I use the higest resolution. Are there any suggestions on how to rectify this situation? I have uploaded and printed before with no problem. Do I have to use the memory stick directly to the site or change settings?
My camera is a Sony DSC-W55.

How are you going about uploading?
Are you digging the files out of the DATA folder in the iPhoto Library Folder? If so, you're using the thumbnails that iPhoto uses for display purposes.

I suggest you use the File -> Export option and export the pics to the desktop. There iPhoto will make a copy. Upload that, and when the upload is finished you can trash the copy on the desktop - your original is safe in iPhoto.

Online printing services and that built into Aperture

Hi,
I regularly have pictures printed by a well known high street photo store here in the UK but just recently I've been disappointed with some of the results.
They're coming back too dark and with a yellow cast even though the original files look fine when viewed on several different modern monitors, some calibrated, some not. I even run my monitor at minimum brightness when preparing them to try to simulate how dark they will look when printed using this service. I also add much more exposure to some pictures in Aperture to the point where they start to look washed out and even then they come back a bit dark.
I'm therefore looking to find an alternative service. Can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable online printing service that produces results close to the electronic versions viewed on their monitor?
Has anyone tried the built in "Order Prints" option in Aperture? How did it go?
I briefly tried to use this option last night but for some reason it didn't recognise my Apple ID which I thought was the same as I use to log into these forums ie "d60Dave" in my case. Am I mistaken?

I second that about photobox. I've used them for 2 years or so - never had to send anything back. I've been pleased with the results for prints, posters and small booklets. online service only

Export for online printing service question...

Hi all...I am new to all this exporting business so please bear with me. In the past if i wanted prints made i just burnt them to a disk and took the disk to a local photo lab to have printed. So the question is when using an online printing service such as Mpix, would i just export versions as original sized jpegs and send them to the printing service and that's it or do i also have to mess with the dpi setting? I noticed the default dpi setting is 72 for all the export presets. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...Dave

when someone else is doing your printing always ask them how they want your Versions delivered first prior to burning the DVD, for example, 16bit TIFF, 8bit TIFF, colorsync (color mangement), dpi...there is an excellent tutorial/information on this in Aperture's help menu "Photography Fundamentals"
what i do is edit the photograph by softproofing to the printer used. in Aperture select the Proofing Profile & then Onscreen Proofing

Photos sent to Online printing service darker than on calibrated monitor

ok, I know that prints are typically darker than what is shown on the screen(with loss of detail in the shadows that was visible on the screen.) I calibrated my monitor using both the eyeone display 2 puck and coloreyes software using gama 2.2, D65, Luminance 120. (which calibrated closely to using the eyeone software. I am using a 2008 macbookpro laptop. I like the colors on the screen and I exported the files using sRGB but also checked the soft proof and both the soft proof and exported photos (in preview) looked fine.
Here are my questions. I used black point compensation, is this correct?
Also, knowing that the photos are printing darker what is the best way to compensate? Should I use the gamma adjustment on the export or should I perform an adjustment on the photo in aperture? (If in aperture which adjustment?)

Can you print them yourself? How do they look?
IME, Black Point Compensation should be used (I forget why, but it is recommended).
If prints you make look right, I would bring it up with the on-line printing service.

IPhoto - uploading photo books for printing

iPhoto crashes when trying to upload a Photobook for printing...driving me mad!

This was an excellent suggestion previewing the book at

and then booting up the computer in safe mode. When I did this I found that several of the fonts had changed and would have ruined the book as they were too big or small or didn't fit the text boxes. I repeated this process until I was satisfied. The pdfs were fine.
Best of all the book was printed exactly as I laid it out.
Apple's turnaround was amazing: just over a week! Really good for getting a book to a small West Coast island in Canada.
Even though Apple's book production is very good it is limited in layouts for each style. BLURB offers a bigger range of layout options as well as a choice of printing papers which is a nice touch. I didn't use them this time because some posters had had delays in getting their books and I had to meet an birthday deadline.
Kudos to Apple for making the book in such a short time.

Will not upload photos to order prints

I have tried several times to send photos from an album to be printed by Apple. The process goes well until the last step of "uploading". Once there after seveveral minutes it times out and gives and error has occured uploading your order. I'm not sure what is failing. Can anyone help me diagnosis this issue?

Some iPhoto/system configurations have trouble creating the pdf file that iPhoto uses to upload and print photos, cards, calendars, etc. Booting into Safe Mode turns off all unnecessary software and system components, one of which is preventing the creation of the pdf file.
You can test it by creating a card, calendar or book and then try to create a PDF file preview as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. If you can create a pdf file then the problem with the print order was something else.

Can you recommend online printing service?

I need some business cards, brochures, and a few name tags for trade shows.
I have the files already, which I designed using Illustrator CS4. I tried Vista Prints before for business cards and the quality was poor.
What about brick and mortar stores? I'm in Charlotte NC.

Since when is digital printing not actual printing?
This is reminiscent of the people not too many years ago that considered that offset printing (as oppsed to letterpress and gravure printing) was not real printing.
For short runs which may be less than 1000 copies in some cases, high quality digital printing such as you can achieve with products such as HP Indigo, Kodak Nexpress, and Xerox iGen and Docucolor can in many instances be a much more economically viable solution with no perceptible loss in quality.
Let's keep snobbery out of this discussion!

Unable to upload Photos edited in Adobe Photoshop CS5

Hi All,
I have edited some Raw photos in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
The photo size is less than 5 MB, but while uploading them to the sites such as Picasa or Facebook, I get an error.
Not a single photo is getting uploaded.
Can anybody help me what's going wrong ?

Providing common responce to all:
I was converting the Raw files into JPEG format and was trying to upload to the online printing service sites so that I can get good quality print outs.
Since my requirement was a quality print, I would not compromise on the file size.
Also the printing sites were having one file size limit upto 10 MB.
I am using Windows 7, and recently had upgraded my browser to IE 9.
After suggestion from Manish Kumar, I tried Google Chrome, and bang.... it worked !!!
Thanks Manish and all for helping me out... The problem is sorted out now, but the upload speed is pathetic.. that I have to live with the Internet speed.

I recently tried to have some images printed by Adorama here in NYC and they came back washed out and brownish. I eventually deduced that the issue was that the photos had an embedded ProphotoRGB color profile and that Adorama couldn't handle it or convert it to something that would work.
Does anyone have any suggestions for online printing services that can manage this color space and give me really nice prints?
I've just uploaded the same files to Mpix to see how they manage - anyone have any experience with Mpix? How about Nations Photo Lab?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Also - what is the best workflow for converting ProPhotoRGB color space to another color space? I tried converting it to Adobe RGB and it looks crap.

Both Mpix and WHCC, among others, support a fully color-managed workflow
that allow you to embed a standard RGB working space profile like ProPhoto.

Which photo printing service to use?

I am relatively new in Apple over from Windows and want to start installing photos from Canon camera using a card reader.I like to do a light editing /correcting/ before I send the photos to a printing service.I have not done this before,therefore I need some advise as which service would be the best to use?Can I send the photos through the Internet and get them back in the regular US Mail printed?I would probably want nothing larger than 6x4 prints.

That is totally a personal choice - I sometimes use CostCo - The Apple printing service is the easiest to use and has good quality
I've pretty much stopped doing prints and do iPhoto books instead

Changing Print Size for online printing

I have hundreds of pictures from a recent trip that I want to print to a 4x6 print. The problem is that the pictures were taken in the incorrect ratio for this print size. I know that a common solution is to crop the picture, but I do not want to do this, I want the entire picture - with a white border around it if necessary. I can get Elements 9 to do this for me for home printing from the print screen and selecting the print size that I want. However, I want to upload these photos to an online printing service (snapfish, shutterfly, etc). I have tried using their digital print size option on Snapfish, but it still crops my pictures.
So,
1. How can I get elements to save the file for me in a compatible 4x6 ratio without cropping, that I can use to upload to a printing service?
2. How can I do this in a batch process as there are over 1000 pictures that have this issue?
3. If elements can't do this, what software can?

I think all you need to do is "Process multiple files". Here is what I would do:
Put all my files to a folder.
Go to File>Process Multiple Files
Use File option as Process from:
check the resize image and input your desired dimension in inches. I would change the resolution setting to 300 so that it remain good enough for printing.

To order prints via iPhoto, put the photos you want to have printed in a new album and go to the "Share" menu and select "prints." You will get a dialoge box with the Kodak logo. From there you can select which pictures you want to have printed at what size. The prices are listed right there and it keeps track of your total as you make additions / changes.
It's pretty straight forward. However, I've had problems uploading my photos. It works sometimes, other times it does not.
When it works, it's great. The photos get printed and shipped really fast. They are high quality prints, they are shipped in very good packaging. There is a web site linked to the Support page where you can check the status of your order. Alll the basic stuff you would expect.
Because of my upload issues, I've looked at the other popular sites, some of which have been mentioned here. So far I'm unimpressed.
Be suspicious of 'glowing reviews' - especially ones with 'coupon codes' attached. (Looks like someone is getting a commission.)
Look at the reviews and read the ones where people had complaints. Info about poor quality paper, bad colors, cheap shipping materials are all things to tune into and investigate. (Basically, if someone says a particular service is 'perfect' - be very suspicious.)
I don't need / want my photos published online by the company that is printing my photos (I have my own website for that) so paying $30 just to have the priviledge of ordering prints seems CRAZY. Don't spend money on that unless you really want to have your photos on a photo dev. web site. (And if you really want your photos online - there are better options.)
That's just my 2 cents. I hope you find an acceptable solution. Printing on your HP is fast and you can control the output, but it's definately the most expensive way to go with the HIGH cost of printer consumables - esp. HP ones!
