Uploading songs from IPOD onto new OS

My computer crashed and needed to be reformatted, so I lost everything. When I reformatted, I downloaded the newest version of ITunes. When I hooked up my Ipod though, it tell me that I have to erase all of my songs. Is there any way around this? Any help would be appreciated.

There's an answer to your question but first it's time for a little lecture - if it makes a difference, I don't feel any better about this than you do. ; - )
I hope you take this unfortunate state of affairs as an opportunity to learn a very important lesson: Back up your iTunes library as soon as you can after resolving this situation because right now you are only one glitch of your iPod away from losing your music entirely.
Many people come to the Discussions having lost their music in just such situations and, believe me, it's not a happy time for anyone.
If you place any importance on your playlists and the data they depend on, make sure to include the iTunes Library files in your back-up regimen as well.

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. The hard drive on my computer crashed, and I had to buy a new one. Unfortunately, I did not have the old drive backed up and lost all my data, including my Itunes library - $90 or so in purchased ITune songs plus a tonn of songs from my CD collection. So, I now have my stagnant Ipod and am unable to expand its library without starting from scratch.
Is there a way to upload my entire library from my 30G Ipod to my new computer, running ITunes 7.02 (or the latest software edition I just downloaded)?

Uploading songs from ipod to new computer.

I have moved from my previous locale and have a new computer now. I cant get the songs that i had from there to this computer by any other way because i left my cds back in my previous locale. Any help would be appreciated.

Putting Songs From iPod onto New Macbook Pro

I am trying to put the approximately 75 gb of music that is on my ipod onto my new Macbook Pro. My Powerbook died unexpectedly and took all my music with it. So now all I have is my little external hd, aka ipod. I've looked online for help with confusing and unsuccessful suggestions for taking music from an ipod and putting it onto a computer. Any help?

Computer Crashed...trying to get songs from Ipod onto new comp...

I looked at a few old threads with similar problems and got myself to the very beginning part where you say "no" to replacing your old library with the "new, improved" empty library (GAWD!) and then I clicked on my Ipod in the "source list" to change it to "manual updates" and then it started to UPDATE!! I freaked out and despite it saying "Do not disconnect" I quickly disconnected it. Soooo, now what?
This is SO STUPID! Why on earth is it so difficult to get your songs reloaded into Itunes once you re-load it onto your computer?! I am sure I'm not the first person to have a computer crash. {frustrated!!!}

p.s. My computer guy told me to just do a search on my comp for all my old "*.mwv" files but that didn't bring back any of the 100's of songs I had loaded off of discs...just a few that I had downloaded.

Cannot upload songs from iPod

I just got a new computer since my other one crashed with all my music on it. I still have the music on my iPod but it will not let me upload it without it erasing it and starting all over. What do I do? Do I have to re-download ALL my songs? That will be exspensive.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
SharePod is also freeware.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.

All of your media that you bought from iTunes you can restore by plugging in the iPod and then right clicking on the iPod icon in the iTunes side bar and select "Transfer Purchases from (name of your iPod)"
For songs/movies you ripped yourself:
If you are on a Mac, look up DeTune... Or Senuti...
there are other compatible things for other OSes but you will have to search for them

Getting songs from nano onto new mac

i just got my new macbook and i was wondering how i can get the songs from my ipod nano onto my new computer. My old computer had windows, so therefore my nano is formatted for windows. i read a little bit about how to do it, but this is my first mac and im having trouble. so if someone could give me some help that'd be great. im just getting used to this new system so if you could dumb down the instructions i'd really appreciate it.

There are a number of third party utilities that can retrieve the files from your iPod. My daughter uses her iPod Mini she's over visiting she has an account on my Mac. We have used Sentuti to move playlists into her iTunes on the Mac. It's pretty intuitive and simple to use, you simply drag and drop tracks or playlists to iTunes within Senuti's own interface panel.

If your iPod was set for automatic update, you'll probably want to change it to manual update until you have completed reloading your new Mac. While connecting the iPod to the computer hold down the ⌥ and ⌘ keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.

There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."
